Contact: Karen Malec, President of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, 877-803-0102, response@abortionbreastcancer.com
HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL, Sept. 9 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer reported that British researcher Patrick Carroll presented his research on abortion as the "best predictor of British breast cancer trends" at a conference in Paris sponsored by the National Institute for Demographic Studies on September 7, 2005. Carroll is director of the London-based Pensions and Population Research Institute. The conference was attended by statisticians and epidemiologists.
Carroll provided forecasts of the increased incidence of breast cancers to be expected in Great Britain in the next 25 years. He reported three trends:
1. British upper class women are more likely to develop breast cancer and to die of the disease than are lower class women. Upper class women are more likely to delay the birth of a first child and to abort before the birth of a first child. These are highly carcinogenic abortions.
The disparity between upper and lower class women (called a "reverse gradient") has widened in recent years and is greater in England than in Scotland, a situation Carroll attributes to a higher abortion rate and later age at first birth in England. In Figure A, Carroll expects a widening of the disparity between classes in England and Wales for the next four years: www.abortionbreastcancer.com/graphics/FigureA.gif.
2. Geographical variations in breast cancer rates across the British Isles can be explained by the abortion rate, but not the birth rate, although childbearing reduces breast cancer risk. Ireland, which prohibits abortion, has the lowest breast cancer rate in the British Isles. London and the Southeast, where abortion is most prevalent, have the highest breast cancer rates, as shown in Figure B: www.abortionbreastcancer.com/graphics/FigureB.gif.
3. Breast cancer rates between 1971 and 2002 increased approximately 70%. Carroll studied breast cancer rates for women ages 50-54 born in the years 1926-1946 and found that breast cancer rates were highly correlated with abortion rates and less highly correlated with fertility and other factors.
"Despite the best efforts of the U.S. National Cancer Institute to cover up evidence of a link during the last half-century," declared Karen Malec, president of the coalition, "women will ultimately learn the truth."
Carroll's press release can be found here: http://www.abortionbreastcancer.com/press_releases/PatrickCarroll0509.PDF
Carroll's research is free of any possibility of recall bias, an unproven, hypothetical problem used by opponents of the abortion-breast cancer link to sweep under the rug earlier research showing a link.

Schwarzenegger Vows to Veto Same-sex Marriage Bill
By: Bridget Maher
Governor Schwarzenegger said that he will veto a bill allowing same-sex marriage in California: "We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote ... Out of respect for the will of the people, the governor will veto (the bill)," said Schwarznegger. In 2000, a majority of Californians voted in favor of Proposition 22, also known as the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Don Wildman from American Family Association has written to us with a very
urgent request: "Churches Are Needed to Adopt a Hurricane Victim Family
for the Next Three to Six Months". Request:
______________
Dear Jerry,
AFA is seeking to find churches that would be willing to adopt a hurricane victim family for the next three to six months. If your church would be willing to adopt a family, please fill out the form and email it back to us. We in turn will contact a family needing shelter and have them get in contact with you directly. You can interview them to see if their needs and your facilities are compatible and to secure references such as their previous local church and pastor. We suggest that you screen the family carefully. While 99% of these people will be very appreciative, there is always that 1% who can create problems.
It is not necessary that these families be put into individual homes (although the local church may do that if desired). Churches with family life centers which have shower and food preparation facilities can be used in this effort.
These people need a place to stay for the next three to six months until they can get back on their feet. AFA's role is simply to put the local church and needy family into contact with each other. After that is accomplished, AFA steps out of the picture.
If your church can adopt a family, please click here to register: http://www.afa.net/adoptafamily/default.asp
Sincerely,
Don
Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman
American Family Association

ITEM #1. Vatican Warns Countries About Pro-Abortion "Catholic" UN Campaign
The Catholic Church is warning counties in Central and South America to be on the lookout for a United Nations campaign run by a pro-abortion "Catholic" group masquerading as an effort to support women's health.
The Vatican Secretary of State has asked the Catholic bishops in Latin American countries to watch out for an effort by the pro-abortion group "Catholics for a Free Choice" to gather signatures from religious leaders.
According to Catholic World News, the CFFC effort is intended to build support for a UN document advocating "reproductive health," a frequent euphemism for abortion. The document will be discussed at the Millennium +5 population conference taking place September 14-16 in New York.
The abortion advocacy group is using the conference as an effort to gather signatures for the document. Similar documents approved by member nations at the UN have used the term "reproductive health," but the Bush administration has secured an agreement from other countries that it will not be used to promote abortion.

ITEM #2. Embryo with two mothers approved
UK scientists have won permission to create a human embryo that will have genetic material from two mothers.
The Newcastle University team will transfer genetic material created when an egg and sperm fuse into another woman's egg.
The groundbreaking work aims to prevent mothers from passing certain genetic diseases on to their unborn babies.
Such diseases arise from DNA found outside the nucleus, and thus inherited separately from DNA in the nucleus.

ITEM #3. Survey finds Vietnamese youth oppose homosexuality
Vietnam's first national survey on youth was released Friday in Hanoi. Done in cooperation with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, the survey of 7,584 people ages 14-25 asked questions about health, sexuality, education, and family lives. According to the survey, 60% of young people in Vietnam know about homosexuality, and of those, four out of five said they would not accept a gay person as a friend.

ITEM #4. Planned Parenthood "Helps" Hurricane Katrina Victims With Free Morning After Pills
Victims of Hurricane Katrina are battling rising waters, destroyed homes and are seeking basic necessities like food, water and shelter. On Wednesday, Planned Parenthood sent an announcement to its members that the nation's largest abortion business is available to help -- with free morning after pills and birth control.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America interim president Karen Pearl lauded her group's efforts in a recent email to its supporters.
"As Hurricane Katrina ripped through the southeastern United States, Planned Parenthood [is] there to offer one free month of birth control or one free emergency contraception kit to women from Louisiana and Mississippi," Peal wrote.
"In past disasters, we know there has been an increased demand for [emergency contraception]," she added.
Pro-life groups say the giveaways are another example of how the abortion business doesn't understand the needs of women and families.

ITEM #5. Mother and Child Campaign say Adoption Board have no right to endanger children
The Mother and Child Campaign have reacted strongly to reports that the Attorney General has interpreted the Adoption Act to mean that homosexual can adopt children. A spokeswoman for the campaign, Niamh Ui Bhriain said that evidence from other jurisdictions showed that homosexual parenting was not in the interest of the child. She added that the Adoption Board should not pursue its own agenda but should prioritise the best interest of the children of the nation.
"Most Irish parents would be horrified to learn that their children could be given for adoption by homosexuals at the behest of a social worker and the Adoption Board" Ms Ui Bhriain said. "The Adoption Act should be amended immediately to reflect the views of the majority of parents in this country, since no public support exists for homosexual parenting"
The Mother and Child Campaign said that the findings of the prestigious- American College of Pediatricians in relation to homosexual parenting made for disturbing reading. They found amongst other things that:
1. Childrearing studies had consistently indicated that children are more likely to thrive emotionally, mentally and physically in a home with two heterosexual parents versus a home with a single parent.
2. Violence among homosexual partners is two to three times more common than among married heterosexual couples.
3. Individuals who practice a homosexual lifestyle are more likely than heterosexuals to experience mental illness, substance abuse, suicidal tendencies and shortened life-spans.
4. "Children reared in homosexual households are more likely to experience sexual confusion, practice homosexual behaviour, and engage in sexual experimentation." The latter are all associated with increased risk of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, substance dependence and especially suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.
Ms Ui Bhriain also pointed out that more than 90 per cent of the submissions
received by the All Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution in regard
to the family had opposed homosexual adoption.

ITEM #6. Doctors May Be Helping Sick Kids Die
Researchers in the Netherlands, the first country to legalize euthanasia for terminally ill people, have found that doctors are helping hasten the deaths of sick children in a variety of ways, sometimes at the edges of what the law allows.
The study adds to an international debate expected to heat up in the United States this fall when the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether Oregon doctors can prescribe federally controlled drugs to help patients die. Oregon has the nation's only doctor-assisted suicide law.
The Dutch euthanasia law took effect in 2002. Before that, the Netherlands' highest court ruled in 1984 that euthanasia could be legal in limited circumstances.
The new study looked at 64 deaths of ill children during a four-month period. Of those, 42 cases involved medical decisions that could hasten death.

ITEM #7. Boom in ageing population
A "grandfather boom" is rippling through the world's population, putting pressure on health care and pension systems, international population experts said in a recent conference.
"The ageing of the population has started to affect developing countries: it will be one of the most important changes of the 21st century," said Catherine Rollet, president of the organising committee of the conference of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP).
Last month the world's population crossed the 6.5 billion mark. But the increase has slowed down from a 2% annual rise in the 1960s to 1.2% today -- with the nine-billion-mark expected to be cracked around 2050.

ITEM #8. Catholic Bishops' in Sri Lanka on Bill on womens' rights
All along her tradition, the Church has always upheld the equal dignity of both man and woman. Even in a world that often tends to look down upon women, it is precisely a woman, the simple woman of Nazareth that the Church honours as the greatest creature made by God, the Creator. It is also well known that Catholics throughout the world invoke the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, proclaimed by the Church as the Mother of God. The many titles under which she is venerated universally, are themselves a living witness to the special veneration accorded to Mary the Mother of God and Mother of ours. In the person of Mary, the Church respects the dignity of all women.
Keeping in line with the inherited faith of our ancestors, the Church recognizes the equal dignity of men and women as human beings and as children of God. Although equal in dignity, men and women have fundamental and essential differences between them, as willed by God, the Creator himself. It is precisely these differences which make them complementary in their very human existence, and make male and female "one flesh" in marriage. The very fact that it is God who created the gender differentiation and the fact that it is God who commanded them to be fertile and procreate within their "one flesh" makes the institution of marriage, itself, something willed by God, the Creator. Thus, marriage, in the Christian understanding, is a life-long, monogamous, heterosexual and exclusive partnership between two persons who are equal in dignity. It is from this partnership between a male and a female that a family springs up. And family is the basic cell of any society.
Where the institution of marriage is firmly upheld, families are strong; and where families are strong, society is healthy. When the basic cell of society, namely, family breaks down, there is chaos in society; we have ample evidence of this in our contemporary society.

ITEM #9. Embryo Stem Cells Genetically Unstable after Long Cultivation
[Discovery may end hopes of using embryo stem cells directly in therapeutic applications]
(LifeSiteNews.com) - Human embryonic stem cells have long been known to be unstable and difficult to control. In some cases, where they have been used directly in therapeutic trials, the use of embryo stem cells has been disastrous for patients. Now a researcher from Johns Hopkins University, an institution that has backed the use of embryos for research, has found that embryonic stem cells that are cultured in the lab accumulate genetic changes that may be linked to cancer.
Like a genetic game of "telephone" the longer the cells are cultivated, the more the genetic errors grow. Says Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti a geneticist at the Institute of Genetic Medicine of Johns Hopkins University in a report in the journal Nature Genetics, "These mutations we are finding are a much bigger problem."
Chakravarti's research team found that as they were cultured, stem cell lines went through 35 cell divisions and found that 90% showed changes in patterns of methylation - the process in which certain genes in a cell are turned on or off - 22% had mutations in mitochondrial DNA and 50% had major deletions or amplifications in the DNA. Moreover, it was the connection between the particular genetic problems the cells developed and the formation of tumours that was most worrying.
"[I]f it turns out these cells really do become unstable over time," Chakravarti said, "then that would put limits on the practical life spans of the cells and their usefulness for therapeutic purposes."
Chakravarti told the New Scientist that a possible solution would be to use the cells only when they are new and before extensive cultivation and division. However, the use of embryonic stem cells for disease treatment depends upon a long process of cultivation and differentiation into particular tissue types. Chakravarti's discovery may end any lingering hopes of using embryo stem cells directly in therapeutic applications.
This discovery of the degradation of the genome of cultured stem cells comes at the same time a member of the UK's House of Lords has decried the hype surrounding embryonic stem cells. The news media and certain factions in the scientific community have long promised that the use of cells derived from embryos and aborted foetuses will cure diseases, usually naming Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Meanwhile all the news regarding real cures and treatments for these and other serious diseases from adult stem cells goes largely unreported.
Speaking on the eve of this year's British Association Festival of Science, saying that the business of science is not certainty but uncertainty, one of the UK's leading fertility experts and a supporter of embryo research, Lord Robert Winston said, "I think we need to be considerably more modest about our science. We do tend to hype up so many activities. The latest one in biology is the issue of embryonic stem cells. I view the current wave of optimism about embryonic stem cells with growing suspicion."
Lord Winston pointed out, at nearly the same moment as the discovery at Johns Hopkins, that one of the biggest problems with embryonic stem cells was that "cultured stem cells are inherently unstable. When grown in the laboratory, they often produced cells with chromosomal abnormalities."

ITEM #10. Diagnosing Down syndrome: please don't say "sorry"
[Doctors are getting better at telling parents their baby has Down syndrome. According to research by a Harvard medical student, they need to.]
Down syndrome is one of the better known disabilities, although there was a time when people with the condition who survived childhood tended to be hidden away in institutions.
Today things are different. People with Down (named after the doctor who first described the syndrome) are on the up: they go to ordinary schools and to special Olympics; they star in films and photographic exhibitions; they even provide the waiting staff of a pizza restaurant in Rome.
The quirk of nature that produces the syndrome happens at conception, when an extra copy of the 21st chromosome is made - giving three per cell instead of two. In the United States it is estimated that one in every 800 to 1000 births - around 5000 a year - is to an infant with trisomy 21. This affects both mental and physical development, but early intervention programs of physical, speech and occupational therapy are overcoming these disabilities to a remarkable degree.

ITEM #11. Girl Scouts National Conclave to Feature Pro-Abortion, Pro-Lesbian Speakers
50th annual convention in Atlanta will showcase group's drift into radical feminism.
Dr. Johnnetta Cole, a woman whose radical views forced the Clinton administration to withdraw her name from consideration for Education Secretary, will be one of three keynote speakers at the Girl Scouts USA national convention in Atlanta from October 7-10.
Another speaker is Kavita Ramdas, president and CEO of the Global Fund for Women, which, among other things, promotes abortion and feminism. The third speaker is Ann Curry, news anchor for NBC's Today Show.
The choice of the first two speakers indicates that the Girl Scouts show no sign of slowing their plunge into hard-core feminism and political advocacy, at least at the national level. The Girl Scouts still sell cookies by the millions, conduct many worthwhile community activities, and involve many families that hold traditional values. But the national organization, like many others, has been captured by a liberal elite that sometimes tips its hand.

ITEM #12. Asia's ever expanding arms market
A sia's economic growth has many effects, not least of which is providing more money for governments to buy arms. So it should come as no surprise that the most authoritative assessment of the world's conventional arms market puts Asian nations at the top of the list of arms purchasers.
There should be more productive ways to put Asia's hard-earned money to work, but status concerns and sellers eager to support their domestic industries will keep tempting those governments. Saying no takes discipline and restraint: Neither has been much in evidence in recent years.
According to the U.S. Congressional Research Service, Asia has accounted for nearly 50 percent of the total value of new arms transfer agreements with developing countries since 2001. This affords the region the dubious honor of having surpassed the Near East as the world's top conventional weapons market. (That region has been eclipsed as a result of a slowdown in arms purchases by Saudi Arabia.) Sales increased significantly last year, jumping from $15.1 billion in 2003 to nearly $22 billion in 2004, marking the highest level of sales since 2000.
Among individual states, India stands out. It has embarked on the biggest purchasing campaign: Delhi signed $5.7 billion in arms deals last year. Saudi Arabia, a longtime leader in the rankings, came in second, with $2.9 billion in new agreements. China, with $2.2 billion, ranked third; Egypt, Oman and Israel ranked fourth, fifth and sixth.
India's $15.7 billion in orders from 1996 to 2004 put it just ahead of China ($15.3 billion) to win pride of place as the developing world's largest weapons buyer. These purchases are part of a defense modernization program that reflects the government's desire to become a real force in the region; political credibility would seem to rest on a strong military.
The United States and Russia are the two biggest arms suppliers; they signed agreements worth $7 billion and $6 billion, respectively, in 2004. Together, they accounted for 60 percent of the $21.8 billion in sales to developing countries. In terms of actual deliveries, the U.S. provided $18.6 billion last year; more than half (53.4 percent) went to developing countries. Russia supplied a mere $4.6 billion, and France was close behind with $4.4 billion.

"Private choices are not private; they all have public consequences... Our society is the sum total of what millions of individuals do in their private lives." James E. Faust
1) The World’s Most Notorious Collectors
Collecting cards is a joy with some people and an obsession with others – hockey cards, children’s’ Yugioh cards, or baseball cards. Collectors eagerly anticipate the arrival of the newest offerings, and are often driven to secure certain popular or rare items for their collection.
Did you know that the “card collectors” mentality is central to the psyche of most child pornography viewers as well?
Shared images of an abused child are given the same careful organization and classification that other types of collectors give their collections. For example, images of a particular child are given a series name, numbered, classified (according to age) and filed meticulously by collectors. This cataloguing allows collectors to communicate and exchange specific information and images with each other, and it also gives porn peddlers further marketing abilities.
For example, in chat rooms, requests will be made such as, “Does anybody have image three from series two of “Girl with Freckles”?
Card collectors seek popular and rare cards. Similarly, there are “hot” images and series with child pornography viewers as well. For example, when a recent police investigation hit the news in Canada and the US, it created a flurry of requests by collectors for images of a particular girl.
2) CYBERTIPS.CA – Protecting Children
Canadians who come across individuals or web sites on the Internet that they suspect of luring or exploiting children for sexual purposes can report their concern to: http://www.cybertip.ca/en/cybertip/
Suspected illegal sites or activities are forwarded by this agency to law enforcement officials in the originating country.
As most of the content reported is of foreign origin, it does not provide a lot of work to Canada’s own police forces; however it is a critical component of Canada’s efforts to address child predation.
“We’ve had over 2,000 reports from the public,” Lianna McDonald, executive director of Child Find Manitoba said. “We’ve had over 400 web sites hosting illegal material shut down, as well as ten arrests as a result of the public coming forward and making those important reports. And we know that we’ve had a few instances where there have been children in Canada who have been removed from a situation where they have been victimized.”
3) Have You Protected Your Home? – Internet Filtering Solutions
With school resuming across the country and children doing research on the Internet, one item you want to be sure to be sure to add to your shopping basket along with pencils and felts is a good Internet filtering solution.
A child’s simple “search” can bring up hardcore pornography sites, as purveyors intentionally purchase the URL’s of misspelled popular sites and search engines. A friend of mine recently went on the Internet to search for a new rib recipe before preparing dinner. Well, she got a lot more “ribs” than recipes!
Although this is disconcerting, it is not surprising. Pornography marketers link their material to the most unrelated topics as a means of accessing new customers. Like tobacco manufacturers, they want children to become addicted at as young an age as possible so they will have a customer for life.
Childhood is a time of imprinting. Images that children are exposed to can never be erased.
Don’t delay!
Filters are not just for children.Speaking with a counsellor recently, I was informed that pornography has become one of the leading causes of marital discord and breakup.

Michele Dow - United Mothers, Fathers and Friends
WHAT I LEARNED AT THE FOLK FESTIVAL
By Royal Hamel
“For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for a city that is to come.” Heb. 13:14
Same-sex “marriage” is now legal in Canada. People who hold to conservative
values just lost another major battle after a two-year struggle. Moreover, it
was only two years ago, as well, that the government passed legislation giving
permission to experiment on the tiniest of humans in the embryonic stem cell
law. And, almost at the same time the homosexual lobby and their media allies
pushed through Bill C-250, a bill that makes it dangerous to publicly criticize
homosexual practice.
With one hammer blow after another traditional values have been badly bludgeoned. Shell shocked, disbelieving and grieving, many Canadians cannot understand how our society can be so profoundly morally adrift. Some are so disheartened that they are in danger of saying, “ It’s no use, nothing we say or do makes any difference, and there’s no point in fighting any longer.”
Augustine was one of the early heroes in the Church who would have understood this despair. In his time the magnificent city of Rome was attacked, looted and largely destroyed by the Visigoths in 410 A.D. Bereaved, despairing and confused many appealed to Augustine asking him how such a tragedy could have happened. As part of his response he wrote his classic tome, The City of God. He put steel in the hearts of his readers by reminding them that there is a “city of man” and a “city of God.” The city of God was a metaphor for eternal values and truth that can never be shaken because its foundations are laid on God. Augustine told his readers that they should focus on this city.
How does one keep on “keeping on”? In the face of the Canadian slide into barbarism, how does one keep despair at bay? Regardless of what might happen, regardless of apparent defeats and losses, believers will renew their hope, finding encouragement in the fact that we wait in expectant hope for a city whose maker and builder is God. And regardless of temporary defeats that city shall never, no never, be shaken.
It’s become a tradition in our family to visit the annual Millrace Folk Festival, held in Cambridge, Ontario over the last weekend in July. This year the weather was perfect. The setting, an amphitheatre on the riverbank, felt magical. The crowd was enthusiastic, and the program of Flamenco guitar with dancing could not have been more dramatic. But, as the late afternoon sun was sinking beyond the river it claimed a target. Then the target claimed me.
For from above the stage, and far off in the distance a glint of light caught my eye. Following it to the source I saw that it came from a metal cross atop a church steeple on the other side of the city. Over the next ten minutes the glint grew to a steady light and then a white-hot glow that captivated my eyes. And in that hallowed moment I quite forgot the music, the ambiance and the scarlet clad dancers. For God held my gaze with the fiery cross. With silent, burning image he reminded me that the Church is the light of the world. The message was not that the Church is supposed to be the light of the world, but, rather that the Church is the light of the world. The message was without, “ifs”, “ands”, or “buts”. Oh to be sure, I knew that already. But I obviously needed reminding. And, what a deal of good it did my soul. For the message was a renewal of my calling.
Fact is the Church has received everything it needs to light the world. Pastors, Bishops, Elders, Deacons, and lay people, alike lack nothing to bring light to the darkness. We have truth and knowledge to speak to those who would trash marriage, to those who kill and call it choice, to those who would make prostitution legitimate employment, to those who call for mercy-killing, and assisted suicide.
We must never forget that we don’t walk away from a calling. For, yes, discouragement, despair, losses and crosses may tempt us to become AWOL light bearers.
So I invite you to keep holding up your light with me. And, all the more as darkness deepens. Let us never be ashamed of the light given to us. let us never let politically correct people put a basket over it. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…till Jesus comes.

Trade unions “played a critical role” in “same-sex marriage law”
By Stephen Gray
“With the passage of the federal equal marriage legislation, Canada has taken an important step forward. The labour movement - from local activists to national leadership - stood united with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community and played a critical role in persuading the Canadian government to pass the same-sex marriage law….The Canadian Labour Congress was a founding member of the broad-based coalition, Canadians for Equal Marriage which led this struggle.”
http://www.canadianlabour.ca/index.php/pride_sol/Its_Time_to_Celebrat
The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has been funding and supporting a myriad of special interest groups for years. It is no surprise to me that they were a ‘founding member’ of the coalition “Canadians for Equal Marriage.” Ken Georgetti of the CLC, when he was president of the B.C. Federation of Labour (BCFL), sent out a letter soliciting funds for abortion clinics. Now that he has graduated to the CLC he is still writing letters, only this time it is in support of “same - sex marriage.” He wrote the prime minister in a letter headlined on CLC website, “CLC Supports Same-sex Marriage” and said this:
“Dear Prime Minister:
I want to express my personal support as well as that of the Canadian Labour Congress for your strong stand in support of the extension of human rights to the area of marriage.”
http://www.canadianlabour.ca/index.php/pride_sol/CLC_Supports_Samesex
The Canadian Labour Congress is the head office of the trade union movement in Canada. It states on its website that: “The Canadian Labour Congress is the largest democratic and popular organization in Canada with over three million members. The Canadian Labour Congress brings together Canada's national and international unions, the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils.”
The CLC is financed from affiliation fees paid from the compulsory union dues of compulsory union members. To my knowledge neither the CLC nor any other trade union in Canada has ever polled or asked its members individually if they supported so called “same-sex marriage.” This aberration has been pushed by the union bosses and a few activists within the trade union movement. Trade union time and money has been spent promoting and supporting this claptrap.
Another union boss with a politically correct agenda is Buzz Hargrove who wrote the prime minister and stated:
“Dear Prime Minister: Clearly the debate around same-sex marriage is heating up. I am writing once again to offer the support of our union, the Canadian Auto Workers, and to encourage you to hold strong on protection of minority rights through the Charter and press forward with same-sex marriage legislation….”
http://www.caw.ca/whatwedo/pride/letters/martin_jan05.asp
And still another union boss inserted himself into the “same-sex marriage” issue. James Clancy, president of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) wrote the prime minister and sent a copy of it to Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere (EGALE), among others. Mr. Clancy wrote this to the prime minister:
“Dear Prime Minister,
On behalf of the National Union of Public and General Employees, I am writing to extend our support to your efforts to introduce legislation that would achieve equal marriage rights for same sex couples in Canada….Unfortunately, as we both know, a small but highly vocal opposition is becoming increasingly organized and active on this issue….In conclusion, I am urging you and your government to quickly bring in legislation to ensure equal marriage rights for same sex couples. ”
http://www.nupge.ca/news_2005/n01fe05a.htm
Not to be outdone on this letter writing campaign was Ken Neumann, National Director of the United Steelworkers of America in Canada. Who had this to say on behalf of his compulsory members:
“Dear Prime Minister Martin and Minister Cotler:
As the National Director of the United Steelworkers of America in Canada, I am writing on behalf of our 255,000 members in support of your government's proposed legislation to extend the right of civil marriage to lesbian and gay couples across Canada….In closing, the Steelworkers calls upon your government to take immediate and decisive action to ensure passage of the proposed equal marriage legislation,…”
http://www.uswa.ca/program/content/1923.php?lan=en&
Another letter writer on the subject of “same-sex marriage” was the president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Deborah Bourque. She wrote the following words to opposition leader Stephen Harper:
“Mr. Harper: … The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) supports the position Prime Minister Paul Martin has taken on same-sex marriage. …Just because marriage has traditionally been a “privilege” only heterosexual couples have been able to access does not mean that the human rights violation should continue.”
http://www.cupw.ca/pages/document_eng.php?Doc_ID=781
And the two big brothers at the headquarters of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) had this to say on pressuring the “federal government” on same sex marriage in this letter to members:
“Dear Sisters and Brothers,…We and our community coalitions can rejoice now that same-sex couples in British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec can legally marry. In the meantime, we continue to pressure the federal government to do the right thing and legalize same-sex marriage so that lesbian and gay couples can marry, no matter where they live in Canada.”
In solidarity,
PAUL MOIST CLAUDE GÉNÉREUX
National President National Secretary-Treasurer
http://www.cupe.ca/www/EqualityPride/9944
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) had this to say on same-sex marriage and its support for “ Canadians for Equal Marriage.”
“The Public Service Alliance of Canada continues to strongly support the extension of access to marriage to same-sex couples. …The PSAC also provides office space and other support to the Canadians for Equal Marriage coalition in Ottawa.”
http://www.psac-afpc.org/what/humanrights/Pride/pride_statement_2005-e.shtml
One could go on and on showing examples of these union bosses claiming to speak for ALL their compulsory members on this invention of words called “same-sex marriage.” The use of union members time and money across Canada on this issue is an affront to democracy itself. Union members in Canada are mature enough to make decisions on this matter individually. They do not need or want union bosses making these political, social and moral decisions for them. If any other organizations in Canada were doing what trade union bosses are doing on behalf of their compulsory members all hell would break loose and charges would be laid. But this is the state Canada is in today where a Labour politburo gets away with the big lie of saying ALL its members support this invented nonsense called “same-sex marriage.”

Pro-Life Renaissance or Scam?
By Joseph A. D’Agostino
As in America, anti-abortion feeling is on the rise in Britain. As in
America, British politicians are talking about restricting late-term
abortions. And, as in America, some UK political leaders are trying to
mollify pro-lifers without really doing anything that would decrease the
number of abortions.
Abortion does not have the salience in British politics that it does in
the States. Nevertheless, recent advances in medical technology are
penetrating into British consciousness. For example, half of all British
babies born prematurely at 23 weeks can now live, yet British law allows
fairly easy access to abortion until 24 weeks. After this point, an
abortion is subject to stricter rules. The discrepancy between viability
and that 24-week limit has generated a debate in the British press, and a
majority of the British people now favor pushing the 24-week limit back.
On August 29, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the left-wing Liberal
Democratic Party, one of Britain’s three major parties, asked for the
science committees of the British House of Lords and House of Commons to
investigate the possibility of lowering the 24-week limit. Most of the
discussion mentions 20 weeks as a possible new gestational limit. Dr.
Evan Harris, a medical doctor and Liberal Democrat MP, cited a recent poll
published in the Telegraph of London that showed only 27% of the public
believed the limit should remain the same. Thirty percent want the limit
cut to 20 weeks, while 19% chose 12 weeks. Women were found to be more
pro-life than men, with one-third of the fair sex favoring a limit of 12
weeks or earlier. Michael Howard, the leader of the Conservative Party in
the spring elections that produced another victory for pro-abortion Prime
Minister Tony Blair’s Labour Party, called for a Commons vote on adopting
the 20-week limit during the election campaign.
But Britain’s Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) warns
that the proposal for a 20-week limit, while it seems to promise
incremental progress on saving the lives of the unborn, could be used as a
Trojan horse for liberalizing abortion laws in other ways. SPUC noted
that in July, Harris talked about lowering the abortion time limit but
also discussed making first-trimester abortions even easier, RU-486 more
readily available, and taking other pro-abortion measures.
“The pro-life movement walked into a trap set by the then-Conservative
government and the pro-abortion lobby in 1990 when most people wrongly
think that the upper limit for abortion was lowered” from 28 weeks to the
current 24, says SPUC’s John Smeaton. “The fact is that it rose to 24
weeks for most abortions, and up to birth in some cases. SPUC is certain
that the same sort of danger applies today.”
The British Medical Association (BMA) has been moving in an anti-life
direction, this summer rejecting a proposal calling for a 20-week abortion
limit and adopting one ending its opposition to assisted suicide. New
pictures of unborn children as young as 12 weeks making deliberate
movements in the womb apparently haven’t affected them as they have so
many of the British people.
Here in the States, 20 weeks is coincidentally the time at which fetal
pain experts believe they have so far proved unborn children begin to feel
pain, perhaps more intensely than born children. Pro-life Sen. Sam
Brownback (R.-Kan.) is the chief sponsor of the Unborn Child Pain
Awareness Act, which would require abortionists to tell women having
abortions after 20 weeks that their children might endure pain during the
procedure. There was a dust-up over that issue last month when the
Journal of the American Medical Association published an article claiming
that unborn children do not feel pain until 29 weeks or later. It turned
out that two of the authors of that article had been involved in abortion
promotion, while the most prominent investigators into fetal pain were not
among the authors. The lead author, Susan Lee, is a former employee of
NARAL.
“You have premature babies delivered at 23 and 24 weeks and you wouldn't
dream of doing surgery on them without anesthesia," Brownback noted after
the JAMA article appeared, according to the Topeka Capital Journal.
Some pro-life activists think that such legislation as the Unborn Child
Pain Awareness Act is a distraction from the true goal, and only pacifies
people who would otherwise be pushing for a ban on all abortions. After
all, such a bill does not actually outlaw any abortions. We at PRI
believe that such legislation as this and the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban
Act have reduced the incidence of abortion by forcing mothers to confront
what happens to unborn children during the procedure.
Any committed pro-lifer already knows that all unborn children—whether
viable or not, whether they feel pain yet or not—are worthy of protection.
But for those who don’t yet understand this, these debates over viability
and abortion in Britain, and over fetal pain in the United States, help to
place the status of the unborn child front and center. By shifting the
focus away from the abstract, invented notion of a “right to privacy,” or
a “right to control one’s own body” that somehow extends to another
person’s body, these debates serve a valuable purpose.
Of course, pro-lifers must ensure they are not being scammed. Hopefully,
the pro-life movement has become too large and well-organized to be
hoodwinked the way it has in the past.

Pierre Trudeau – Catholic 'bimbo'

So someone has finally set out to solve the mystery of Pierre Elliot Trudeau's Catholicism. It was a mystery because nothing in the public life of Canada's late great prime minister, and little in his private life, ever showed any evidence of it. So where and what was it, exactly?
In a current book – "The Hidden Pierre Elliot Trudeau -- The Faith Behind the Politics" – three Trudeau aficionados perhaps unwittingly provide the answer. We couldn't see his Catholicism because, except in the most nominal sense, it didn't exist. I haven't read the book, but every review of it points to the same conclusion.
Trudeau may be said to fulfill the same role in 20th century Canadian politics that John F. Kennedy fills in 20th century American politics. He became the idol of the new postwar generation, the "Sixties People."
Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, came ahead of that generation and was revered by it mostly in retrospect. Trudeau, who took office in 1968, came with it and was cherished and recurrently elected by it. Both were Catholics, both were womanizers, and both steadfastly refused to allow their professed religion to influence their professed politics.
There were differences, however. Both were of an age to serve in World War II. Kennedy served in the thick of the Pacific battle; Trudeau spent the war as a Montreal playboy, motorcycling about town in a German helmet, spoofing the whole war effort. Then after the war, Kennedy militantly defied the Soviet slave state. Trudeau courted it, praised it, flirted with Cuba's Castro and consistently twitted the Americans who were protecting his country from it.
But what of his Catholicism? He was educated in Catholic schools, was married to a Protestant in a Catholic church, and his three sons were raised as Catholics.
Yet it was he as justice minister who introduced the bill legalizing abortion in Canada. He favored no-fault divorce and in retirement raised no voice against the burgeoning movement for gay rights (It was also Trudeau who legalized sodomy in 1969, with the ringing war cry: "The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation". Every Canadian knows this famous Trudeau quote. And there are other Trudeau quotes & gestures, e.g: giving the Canadian people the middle finger when some of them dared to boo the great man on one occasion - RJ). In the teaching of the church, anyone who even assists in or enables an abortion is considered excommunicated, unless and until they repent of the deed. For Trudeau, such a repentance would obviously require a public statement, repudiating what he had publicly done. Until the day of his death, he declared himself proud of the legislation – a law which, when the courts were finished with it, made Canada virtually the only country with no legal restriction on abortion whatever.
So, how did his Catholicism influence his conduct? This is the question Trudeau biographer John English, journalist Richard Gwynn and the historian P. Whitney Lackenhauer promise to answer. Their book consists entirely of the memories and observations of some 20 of Trudeau's friends, colleagues and journalists, a list distinguished by the virtual absence of any avowed Christian believers, probably because Trudeau had no friends with such an unfashionable inclination. (One possible exception is Gwynn himself, who is said to have returned of late to the faith.)
From their comments, as they appear in the reviews, we find a man whose faith diminished over his lifetime down to some form of occasional meditation or contemplation. He went to church to meditate, he at one point allows, though he did not need the church to "talk to God." Finally, after the tragic death of a son two years before his own, even prayer became impossible for him.
If this faith imposed any restraints upon his private conduct, they must have been broad ones. The book, writes Father Alphonse de Valk, editor of Catholic Insight magazine, reveals Trudeau as "a full-status Catholic bimbo." Before, during and after his marriage in 1971 to the socialite Margaret Sinclair, 29 years his junior, he enjoyed a robust chain of love affairs. They numbered, in the estimation of Hollywood actress Margot Kidder, about 40, she herself being one of them. Another was with Kim Cattrall of "Sex in the City" fame, he 59 and she 22 at the time, and another with Newfoundland lawyer Deborah Coyne, mother of his 15-year-old illegitimate daughter.
Beyond the Trudeau mystery, however, lies another one. He was buried in Montreal with the full pomp and circumstance of the Catholic Church. Yet his abortion legislation alone made him an excommunicated apostate. Ordinary Catholic Christians well may have wondered: If the church believes what it says it believes, how could it allow this? Now, if someone wrote a book tackling that mystery, even I might buy and read it.
Ted Byfield published a weekly news magazine in western Canada for 30 years and is now general editor of "The Christians," a 12-volume history of Christianity.

Pastor faces hearing
over 'anti-gay' letter
Won't apologize, willing
to go to prison if convicted

A Canadian pastor who works with at-risk youth is preparing to face his province's Human Rights Tribunal because of a letter to the editor he wrote calling homosexuality immoral and dangerous.
The letter by the Rev. Stephen Boissoin of Alberta also called into question the province's new homosexual-rights curriculum, reported LifeSiteNews.com.
The complaint was filed by Darren Lund, an assistant professor at the University of Calgary, after Boissoin's letter was published in the Red Deer Advocate.
If Boissoin loses, he could be forced to pay $7,000 in fines – $5,000 to Lund personally and another $2,000 to the homosexual-rights group EGALE Canada.
In addition, Lund requests that Boissoin, married with two children, be forced to apologize to his readers in another letter in the Red Deer Advocate.
Boissoin says, however, he will not apologize or pay the fines, even if it means prison.
He told LifeSiteNews.com he has no money to represent himself before the Alberta Human Rights Commission, which likely will hear his case in October.
"I know nothing about human rights case law," he says. "I'm trying to learn. Understand this, I work every single day, have two kids … and right in the middle of that I'm trying to learn human rights law. So, I'll be very happy when it's over."
In his letter, Boissoin wrote, "Children as young as 5 and 6 years of age are being subjected to psychologically and physiologically damaging pro-homosexual literature and guidance in the public school system; all under the fraudulent guise of equal rights."
Boissoin said he's concerned behavior that is dangerous, and sometimes fatal, is being presented as normative and even healthy to the most impressionable.
"I was just writing a letter to the editor, to the heterosexual population," he said, "saying this is something to be very, very concerned about."
But his accuser, Lund, has likened him to a local white supremacist, Terry Long of Aryan Nation, and a holocaust denier, James Keegstra.
Boissoin told LifeSiteNews.com he expects to be found guilty, noting he met with an officer of the Human Rights Commission who said the letter went against the panel's "position."
The pastor is preparing carefully for the hearing, however, asking a number of witnesses to speak on his behalf.
"I feel almost too humble to say this, to be honest with you," he says, referring to the witnesses, "but they say they've worked with me, and they've seen my devotion to teens, bi-sexual and homosexual alike, and they're hurt that I can be fined, and potentially, if I don't pay these fines, I can be imprisoned."
Boissoin said he will be OK, regardless of the outcome.
"I'm just going to trust God. I've been through a lot in my life … ," he said. "[God] may have me speaking just before the panel and judges and it may touch someone's heart and minister to them. I'm just going to go in humble, and leave the outcome to God."
