2. Lifeissues.net Newsletter #330 – July 1, 2007

Dear Friends for Life,

Flying back from Indonesia after giving a series of Pro Life talks, part of me wanted to return again someday due to the Indonesian Pro Life/Pro Family dedication, their variety of rich cultures, customs and languages as well as a genuine, warm hospitality.

Indonesia has the 4th largest population in the world and the 3rd in Asia with 234,693,997 people. I was amazed to learn that it has 17,000 islands, 600 of them are inhabited by people. Because of its location, it is called the "emerald belt at the equator"

Having given 14 PowerPoint Presentations in 10-days on different aspects of "Family and Life Issues", I was amazed at the large attendances and the quality of the questions which followed each talk. The Indonesian people are definitely concerned about such Life Issues as Bioethics, Abortion, Contraceptive, PAS, the Ageing Population, etc. They are not only determined to change the course of their society, but also intent on protecting their traditional family structures.

I thank everyone for making this trip possible with your prayers and financial support. Together, let's continue building a Culture of Life among the poor in the Heart of Asia. Be assured of my daily prayers for the good work you are doing for the family and the unborn.

God Bless, Fr. Jerry

(A Quote:) "The superior position, surely, is that human beings possess equally an intrinsic dignity that is the moral ground of the equal right to life of all. This is a right possessed by every human being simply by virtue of his or her humanity. It does not depend on an individual's age, or size, or stage of development; nor can it be erased by an individual's physical or mental infirmity or condition of dependency." – Robert P. George

Focus On Asia: Heavy rains and winds are causing more problems in many areas of South Asia after a weekend of chaotic weather saw several hundred people killed. Much of Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi – where 200 died – is still without power. Forecasters say a cyclone and heavy winds are set to hit most of Pakistan's coast and much of India's west coast. More than 140 have been killed in the rains in India. There have also been a number of deaths in Afghanistan.

Item #1. Catholic Bishops Criticize Rescinding Of Mexico City Policy, AIDS Prevention Funding
"Exporting abortion overseas will not lower abortion rates, is resented by developing nations, and is not supported by the American people," Ms. McQuade said. "Poor women in developing nations want food, clean water, housing, and affordable medicine for themselves and their families, not 'assistance' to abort their own children."

Item #2. Rays Of Hope For Africa's AIDS Children
UNAIDS and the U.N. Children's Fund say 2.3 million children in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV-positive, most of them infected by their mothers because they did not receive drugs taken for granted in wealthy countries to prevent transmission of the virus.

Globally, an estimated 530,000 children were newly infected last year and 380,000 died of AIDS, the vast majority in Africa. Without treatment, half of infected infants die before age 2.

Throughout southern Africa, child mortality rates have soared because of AIDS, reversing health gains from better sanitation and immunization even in relatively prosperous countries such as Botswana and South Africa.

Item #3. Study Shows Forty Percent of PVS Patients Misdiagnosed, Half Recover
A new international study finds that about forty percent of patients like Terri Schiavo who are supposedly in a persistent vegetative state are misdiagnosed and another fifty percent of them recover from their situation. The study finds the patients in question were in a minimally conscious state and could improve.

The studies, conducted by researchers in Belgium, found that the level of misdiagnosis has not decreased in the last 15 years. There were presented at the European Neurological Society Meeting in Greece.

Brazil already distributes 254 million free condoms a year, many as part of an anti-AIDS program that makes a special effort just before each year's Carnival celebrations. Brazil also has handed out the morning-after pill and regular contraceptives at government pharmacies for years.

The newly expanded program offers regular contraceptives at commercial drug stores for sale at just $2.40 for a year's supply. Temporao didn't say whether the morning-after pills would be subsidized or entirely free. Previously, the government said it would distribute 50 million packages of regular birth control pills, each with a month's supply, by year's end.

A terminally ill death row inmate who had less than a year to live was executed Tuesday evening in Oklahoma, sparking a new debate over whether sick inmates should be put to death or allowed to die of natural causes.

Jimmy Dale Bland, 49, was killed by lethal injection shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, soon after the Supreme Court rejected his last, 11th-hour appeal. Bland had a fatal case of lung cancer that had spread to his brain, and had undergone radiation treatment and chemotherapy, his lawyer, David Autry, told ABC News. Bland would have died in six months, Autry said.

Item #9. Balancing Work While Caring For Aging Parents
Elder care is a costly struggle for employees and employers alike. A MetLife study found that people who take on a caregiver role give up more than $650,000 in lifetime earning potential. And on the employer side, the same study estimated that American businesses see a $33 billion productivity loss each year because of employees' care-giving obligations. The numbers suggest there's clearly a business case for introducing benefits and support programs.

Item #12. Catholic Vice President Of Kenya Encourages African Leaders To Ratify Abortion Protocol
The leaders of 10 African countries have called for the legalization of abortion. Representatives from Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia attended a three-day conference in Nairobi, which discussed maternal mortality. 21 African countries have now signed a protocol on women's rights that endorses legal abortions in the case of rape, incest and when the pregnancy threatens the life or health of the woman or the embryo. Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori, who is a Catholic, said: "The ratification of the protocol is high on Kenya's agenda. It is sad to learn that 68,000 women die of unsafe abortion each year and, out of these, 30,000 are in Africa. We could simply say there is one unsafe abortion for every seven live births in Africa."

Patrick Buckley, SPUC's UN lobbyist, said: "This is yet another grave consequence of the Maputo Protocol which consists of a blatant attempt by the African Union to force all its member states to legalize abortion under the guise of reducing maternal mortality."

3. Lifeissues.net Newsletter #331 – July 8, 2007

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Repeat abortions in U.S. is now nearing almost half. Slowly over the years, the percentage of women having more than one abortion has slowly increased. For a number of years, it stalled at 44-45 percent, now a new figure released by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, the scientific arm of Planned Parenthood, places the number at 48% for the year 2002. The typical woman having a repeat abortion was over thirty years old and had been using contraception when she became pregnant.

New source of Embryonic Stem Cells just around the corner? In the June issue of the journal, Nature, are reports that embryonic stem cells were created by reprogramming some of the genes in adult skin cells. This did not require creating a separate living embryo. These were in mice and are preliminary, but constitute a significant breakthrough. If more research on this proves it to be possible in humans, the fight over having to kill human embryos to get embryonic stem cells would be over. One problem with this new technique is that 25% of the new embryonic stem cells became cancerous.

On May 11 to 13, 3,300 delegates from all over the world attended the 4th World Congress of Families in Warsaw. Poland's Minister of Education, and its Vice Prime Minister both assured the Congress that Poland has no intention of agreeing to the demands of the European Union that it follow Brussels and the European Parliament in providing abortion, special rights to homosexuals, same sex marriages, and other attacks on the family. A European Parliament debate last month condemned Poland for being "hateful and repulsive" for refusing to permit the promotion of homosexuality in schools. Defying this, pro-family leaders at the Polish meeting were assured that the Polish government would protect children in school from homosexual and abortion propaganda.

As the battle for the "Culture of Life" continues, remember that God depends very much on your participation.

God Bless, Fr. Jerry, omi

(A Quote:) "Are we angry enough about what's wrong with the world – the killing of millions of unborn children through abortion; the neglect of the poor and the elderly; the mistreatment of immigrants in our midst; the abuse of science in embryonic stem cell research? Item #1. Chimera Embryos Have Right To Life, Say Bishops
Human-animal hybrid embryos conceived in the laboratory - so-called "chimeras" – should be regarded as human and their mothers should be allowed to give birth to them, the Roman Catholic Church said yesterday. Under draft Government legislation to be debated by Parliament later this year, scientists will be given permission for the first time to create such embryos for research as long as they destroy them within two weeks.

A Canadian girl who is likely to be infertile in later life could give birth to her half-brother or half-sister if she is allowed to use her mother's frozen eggs. Flavie Boivin cannot have children naturally because of a chromosomal condition called Turner's syndrome. Her mother, Melanie, has frozen eggs for her daughter to use to get pregnant if she so wishes and if regulations allow. An independent ethics committee agreed to the procedure "because the mother giving to a daughter is out of love". Josephine Quintavalle, of Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said the case was bewildering.

Item #4. Rise In The Number Of Abortions In The UK
The rise in the number of abortions in England and Wales in 2006 has been described as disappointing by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. A statement said the increase of 3.9% "points to a failure to address the problem of unplanned pregnancy, particularly in teenagers and young women". The college called on the Government to heed its recommendations and proposals which are to be published in its study group's findings on teenage pregnancy over the next week. There needed to be a rethink in the way sex and relationship education (SRE) is provided with the aim of changing attitudes and behaviour across all ages.

Quote: People with Down Syndrome have a different view of life. They seem to be able to detect the essential elements of life, and by their frankness and lack of social niceties they can cut through many formalities, disarm us from our prejudice and get to the heart of relationships. Jean Vanier, taking a person with Down's Syndrome to a wide beach in France, asked him to draw a picture of joy in the sand. This person responded, "the beach is not big enough." – [Philip G. I hope and pray with all my heart that more hospitals and institutes will follow suit, with hope of saving countless lives of children with Down Syndrome. Many of you know one of our grandsons has Downs. David is a complete joy to be around. We can't imagine life without David. His special generous big hugs, and bright smile draws people to him.. He is a completely wonderful child, who we all  welcomed as a gift from God. David survived cancer is cancer free, had the hole in his heart repaired. George Pell: No, no. You see, with due respect, that's playing with words. If you are destroying a human embryo, and that necessarily follows from their use, it's playing with words to suggest that somehow that's therapeutic. It's destructive and the hope is that it will be used to develop therapies.

Item #12. Pope Takes Blair To Task Over Iraq, Abortion And Stem Cells
Tony Blair received a tough dressing down from Pope Benedict XVI during his audience with the pontiff yesterday, not only over the war in Iraq but also over legislation passed during Mr Blair's ten years in power on abortion, gay adoption and stem cell research.

Some newspapers at the end of last week carried reports predicting that Mr Blair would convert to Roman Catholicism after leaving office and that the Pope would give the conversion his blessing during their farewell meeting at the Vatican on Saturday.

However the Vatican said after the meeting that the pontiff and Mr Blair had had a "frank exchange" on "particularly delicate subjects", which is Vatican-speak for downright disagreement. Italian reports said the Pope had criticized UK laws allowing greater stem cell research on human embryos, easy access to abortion, same-sex marriages, and adoption by gay couples.

4. Lifeissues.net Newsletter #331 – July 15, 2007

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

The Internet is apparently largely to blame for unwanted teen pregnancies in China's Shanghai, where many young girls get their ideas about sex from going online rather than talking to an adult, according to Reuters report released last Tuesday.

Reuters cited a Chinese newspaper reporting that nearly half of pregnant teens in Shanghai met their partner on the Web. A doctor in the country who manages the teen-pregnancy hotline said that 46 percent of the more than 20,000 teenage girls who called in within the last two years said they had had sex with boys they met online.

This is alarming as it gravely affects the sexual behavior of teenagers. If this trend continues, there will be more abortions and more children who will grow up in single-parent homes. It's time for parents to reclaim their moral authority.

God Bless, Marlon Castillo Ramirez, Assistant Editor

Local officials were warned that population control quotas had to be met or their heads would be on the chopping block. They reacted by hunting down and arresting hundreds of women for the crime of being pregnant. Taken by force to hospitals and clinics, these were aborted against their will. It did not matter whether the women were past the point of viability, or even whether they were already in labor. Their babies were killed all the same.

Item #1. Study Sees 'Turnaround' In Young Adults' Positions On Abortion
Younger voters, especially women, are embracing a pro-life position in surprising numbers and in sharp contrast to attitudes that held sway 15 years ago, according to a new study.

The study by Overbrook Research, a public consulting firm in Illinois, examines public opinion data from Missouri. With proportions of blacks, Catholics and union members in line with national averages, the state is viewed as "highly representative of the American electorate," the study says.

Over 30,000 survey interviews were conducted in the state between 1992 and 2006. Participants were asked: "On the debate over abortion policy, do you consider yourself to be pro-life, pro-choice or somewhere in between?" Those who gave a definitive answer were then asked how strongly they held their view.

Item #2. Internet Blamed For Shanghai Teen Pregnancies
BEIJING (Reuters) – Nearly half of the pregnant teens in China's financial hub, Shanghai, met their partners on the Internet, state media said on Tuesday. Zhang Zhengrong, a doctor who oversees the city's first-aid hotline for pregnant teens, said 46 percent of the more than 20,000 teenage girls who called the hotline over the past two years said they had had sex with boys they met on the Internet.

"Most of the fathers disappeared after learning about the pregnancy, and some of the mothers did not even know the fathers' names," the China Daily said. Zhang blamed the situation on adult Web sites, videos and books and appealed to parents, teachers and society at large to pay more attention to sex education.

Item #3. Schools Give Morning After Pill To 11-Year-Olds
Thousands of girls as young as 11 can obtain the morning after pill at school without telling their parents, it was disclosed last night.

Sexual health clinics are being set up in secondary schools in England as part of a Government drive to cut teenage pregnancy.

Figures show that in some areas, up to half of schools now offer children a range of services, including free condoms, pregnancy kits and emergency contraception. One school has admitted handing out 345 morning after pills in the past four years.

Item #4. Homosexual Conference Instructs How To Influence Government, Society
Gay-affirming denomination seeks international influence. About 1,500 homosexuals from 25 countries learned at a conference this month how to get their governments to favor homosexuality.

The conference, held in Scottsdale, Ariz., and sponsored by the Metropolitan Community Church, hosted delegates from countries where homosexual behavior is outlawed, such as Jamaica and Nigeria.

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth, said he doesn't like the idea of a conference in America influencing other nations to embrace homosexuality. "There's certainly no reason why immoral American standards should be exported to the developing world," he told Family News in Focus. "If a country like Jamaica criminalizes homosexual behavior, that's their right." Caleb Price, gender issues analyst for Focus on the Family, said the gay lobby is hijacking Christianity.

Item #5. Hormonal Contraceptives Pollute Drinking Water - Environmentalists Turn A Blind Eye
For some years now, reports have been growing from around the world that the massive amounts of synthetic birth control hormones being pumped into the water systems through sewage outflow is changing the sex of fish stocks. Recently, scientists have also begun to warn of the possible carcinogenic effects of the build-up of estrogenic chemicals in drinking water.

As early as 2002, the UK Environment Agency warned that fish stocks in British rivers were showing signs of gender ambiguity as a result of high levels of estrogen in the water. A survey of 1,500 fish at 50 river sites found more than a third of males also displayed female characteristics.

Item #6. Those Who Cure You Will Kill You
The carnage which might have resulted from three bungled car bombs in London and Glasgow is incredible. But incredible, too, was the discovery that the terrorists who planned this devastation were nearly all doctors. The ringleader of the plot may be Dr Mohammed Asha, a 26-year-old neurologist from Jordan. His wife, Dana Marwah, a hospital lab technician, has also been arrested. Kafeel Ahmed, an engineer with a PhD, crashed a car packed with gas canisters and gasoline into Glasgow airport accompanied by Dr Bilal Abdulla, a diabetes specialist. Ahmed's brother, Dr Sabeel Ahmed, was working in a public hospital. Two medical students were arrested in Glasgow. The network extends to Australia, where Dr Mohamed Haneef, a hospital doctor in Brisbane, was arrested when about to board a plane to India with a one-way ticket. Now Australian police are questioning six other Indian doctors. In the aftermath of the arrests, the canon of St George's Memorial Anglican Church in Baghdad, Andrew White, (now there's a job for thrill seekers) remembered a warning from an al-Qa'eda representative in Jordan earlier that year at a reconciliation meeting. "The people who cure you will kill you," the man told him. Whether or not White's story is correct, that is what happened. The very doctors who had planned this mayhem could have been suturing wounds and consoling patients in emergency rooms afterwards.

Item #7. Beware The Population Alarmists
This week's UN "State of World Population" report warns that by 2008, more than half the world's population will live in urban areas. Shock, horror! But there is a serious point to the UN report: it wants to slow down urbanization by reducing birth rates. The only problem is that it provides no compelling reason for so doing. For years, the UN Population Fund has been seeking to justify its existence by issuing reports claiming that we must reduce birth rates in poor countries in order to achieve "sustainable development." While intuitively appealing, these ideas are not supported by evidence. In reality, global living standards improved dramatically over the past century, despite a near-quadrupling of human numbers – and they can continue to improve at current and future population levels.

Item #8. Doctor 'Hastened Babies' Deaths'
A doctor's administration of drugs hastened the deaths of two terminally ill babies and was "tantamount to euthanasia", an inquiry has heard. Consultant neonatologist Michael Munro, 41, gave 23 times the normal dose of a muscle relaxant at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, medical watchdogs were told. The General Medical Council (GMC) fitness to practise panel heard the doctor failed to record his actions.

Item #9. Gay Adoptions Condone Immoral Lifestyles According To Christianet Poll
ChristiaNet.com, the world's largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, conducted a recent poll asking, "Should gay and lesbian couples be allowed to adopt children?" The overall consensus is that homeless children are in dire need of healthy loving homes. As one voter said, "Every child deserves a loving home." Bill Cooper, President of ChristiaNet, stated, "The issue is not whether children need homes, but the type of spiritual environment that children are placed into."

Out of 1,384 participants, 86% feel that homosexual couples should not be allowed to adopt. The responses from this group agreed that children need homes, but were more concerned that this type of environment would hurt the child rather than help. Just as if, the child is adopted by a heterosexual couple exhibiting another type of outwardly sinful lifestyle. "Allowing such adoptions condones the lifestyle," expressed a concerned mother of three. Many wonder if sexual immoral lifestyles will play a crucial role in how future generations perceive what is considered socially acceptable.

Item #10. Development Banks Not Fulfilling Pledges To Support Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS Projects In Developing Countries, Report Says
Multilateral development banks are not fulfilling their commitments to support initiatives involving reproductive and sexual health in developing countries, according to a new study released by Gender Action, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that monitors the banks' policies on women and gender equality, Inter Press Service reports. The 90-page report examines the quantity and quality of all spending for reproductive health and HIV/AIDS projects from 2003 to 2006 by the World Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. The report also looks at the effect of the International Monetary Fund's fiscal and monetary policies.

According to the report, there was a "profound decline" in World Bank spending on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS projects from $2.7 billion in 2003 to $1.5 billion in 2006. The World Bank approved a total of $7.5 billion for such projects during the four-year period. World Bank officials could not be reached for comment, according to Inter Press Service.

Item #11. Argentina Doctors To Government: You Can't Expect Us To Start Practicing Abortion
The Buenos Aires Catholic Doctors Consortium (CDC) recently blasted the government's attempts to loosen the abortion laws in Argentina.

"Abortion is always and without exception direct murder of a human person," stated the CDC, responding to attempts by public health authorities to allow abortion in all cases of violence, Fides News Agency reports.

The CDC statement continued, "Natural right teaches unequivocally that the right to life is the first of all human rights and no one can dispose of it. Therefore neither politicians, nor legislators nor authorities can expect doctors, who by vocation, profession and tradition swear to protect life and health, to practice abortion, killing the smallest and most helpless of all human beings".

The CDC said, "To allow abortion or extend the period as some want to do now, will only aggravate the problem and allow the murder of babies because they are the weakest and most defenceless."

Item #12. Netherlands Threatens Nicaragua Over Conservative Abortion Laws
Bert Koenders, Dutch Minister of Development, has told the government of Nicaragua that his country may withdraw much needed development assistance unless Nicaragua liberalizes its abortion laws.

Last October, the national Parliament of Nicaragua unanimously modified its penal code to ban all abortions. Prior to the vote, a coalition of UN officials and country representatives, including UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) tried to stop the Parliament from changing the law.

Since the legislation passed, the Nicaraguan government has been the subject of increasing pressure from the pro-abortion radicals from around the world. Last January the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women told Nicaragua to review "laws relating to abortion with a view to removing punitive provisions." Human Rights Watch mounted a legal challenge to the Nicaragua's abortion law claiming that Nicaragua's ban on abortion is contrary to international documents.  The nation's high court is expected to deliver a decision in the case in the coming months.

5. Media Release: Abortion Statistics 2004 - July 13, 2007

July 13, 2007

Media Release

Recorded Death of Thousands of Babies
Released by Stats Can

Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) reacts to the latest statistics from Statistics Canada on abortion. StatsCan today released the information that 100,039 babies were deliberately killed in their mothers’ wombs in the year 2004 in Canada. This death toll is added to the nearly three million slaughtered since 1969. There was a slight decline in abortions committed mostly among women in their twenties, StatsCan reported.

“The magnitude of this atrocity appears to be lost on the average person in Canada,” said Jim Hughes, National President of CLC. “Canada likes to brag about its human rights record at home and abroad, while it ignores the mounting death toll that it has refused to stop,” he continued. "The blood of these innocent babies cries out for justice. We are killing the future of our country. We are already a country which is not replacing itself and we have eliminated more then three million people from our population. We will soon be suffering from a population implosion."

“Statistics are cold numbers but each one of these precious babies not yet born are human beings who were systematically dismembered by doctors and this was paid for by the taxpayers,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of CLC. “The fact that the numbers are lower among women in their twenties is encouraging, perhaps, but the final figures are staggering,” she stated.

Campaign Life Coalition calls on the federal government to enact legislation to protect the right to life for all Canadians from conception (fertilization) until natural death as they were directed by the Supreme Court in 1988.

7. National Abortion Federation Calls On Canadian Medical Association To Require Doctors To Refer For Abortion - May 25, 2007

The U.S. based National Abortion Federation has demanded that the Canadian Medical Association change their policy of allowing doctors to decline to refer patients for abortion. In a letter sent to the CMA earlier this month, Federation president Vicki Saporta said a physician's "religious and moral beliefs" should not take precedence over patient interests and accused the CMA of creating delays for women with the conscientious objector policy. Dr. Colin McMillan, president of the CMA, defended the policy in a letter to Ms. Saporta quoted by the National Post, saying, "The CMA's policy on induced abortion does not violate our Code of Ethics…Nor does it treat women unfairly or impede their access to critical health care." The CMA's abortion policy was passed in 1988 and has been re-confirmed annually each year since. Concerned by threats to doctors' freedom of conscience, Canadian Physicians for Life is urging the public to contact the CMA and request that the protection for doctors' freedom of conscience be strengthened.

9. One-Child Terror Campaign Continues B y Steven W. Mosher – July 16, 2007

Population Research Institute - Weekly Briefing, Vol. 9 / No. 24 - July 9, 2007

The forced abortion campaign hit the southern Chinese province like a deadly hurricane. The provincial government decided that too many babies were being born.

The above could stand as an accurate description of what I witnessed in China's Guangdong province in 1979-80. In reality, it is what is happening right now in the neighbouring province of Guangxi. And what has happened in county after county, province after province, over the past 27 years. The one-child terror campaign that started back in 1980 continues to the present day, violating women and tearing apart families throughout China.

In fact, the only thing unusual about this latest campaign is how quickly news of these atrocities spread outside of China. Guangxi province is not far from Hong Kong. No sooner had the campaign begun in May of this year than word reached the former British colony and from there the outside world. Guangxi, like Guangdong and Hong Kong, is Cantonese speaking. It is also one of the more developed regions of China, where many people have cell phones and access to the Internet. It was by these means that the victims of the terror campaign communicated their suffering to the outside world.

Guangxi's proximity to Hong Kong allowed  word of the Communist crackdowns to leak out.

National Public Radio, the taxpayer-funded alternative to Rush Limbaugh, actually ran a story on the campaign on its Morning Edition show. This described in harrowing detail the plight of Guangxi resident Wei Linrong.  She and her husband, Liang Yage, already had one child but wanted a second. Mrs. Liang was arrested when she was seven months pregnant and forced to abort her child.  The Liangs are Christian, NPR reported, and do not believe in abortion.

The Hong Kong and foreign press also reported how local officials were imposing punitive fines on those who had already given birth to second children.  These fines were, in some cases, equivalent to several years' income.

In response to these heavy-handed tactics riots broke out in 28 towns throughout the region.  Thousands went on the rampage, storming government buildings, breaking windows, smashing furniture and vandalizing vehicles. Some rioters even tried to set buildings on fire. To quell the unrest, the regional government called in hundreds of armed police.

Tian Congming, President of Xinhua News Agency.  This Agency claimed that the Chinese who
rioted against the one-child policy were only to be "re-educated."

The sympathy of the foreign press was obviously with the victims of forced abortions. NPR’s Morning Edition told not just the Liang's story, but other tales of Chinese women whose babies were aborted weeks, sometimes days before they were due to be born.  The Los Angeles Times published full-color photos of the riots and printed the stories of peasants who had “finally had enough.”  Even the New York Times finally got into the act with a long piece about the tragic inner-city abortion rates among young, unmarried Chinese women.  (It apparently took the Times several days to figure out a pro-abortion slant.)

The official Xinhua News Agency, reacting to the foreign media coverage, went into damage control mode. Xinhua claimed that only 28 people were arrested in the aftermath of the riots, a number which seems ridiculously low under the circumstances.  Xinhua also suggested that instead of jail terms the misguided villagers were to get counselling:  4,200 Communist Party cadres had been dispatched to the area to engage the villagers in dialogue about their complaints and ease tension in the 28 troubled towns. Xinhua did not reveal whether these cadres were armed.

Those arrested, whether 28 or, more likely, several hundred in number cannot expect to be treated well in jail.  A blind attorney, who has been one of the leading activists in China against forced abortions, was recently severely beaten while in jail.  Human rights groups say prison officials ordered fellow inmates to beat him after he resisted having his head shaved and insisted on his legal rights.  This is unusual only in that the officials themselves did not administer the beating.

How many more millions of women will have to suffer forced abortion before China's leaders realize the bankruptcy of the policy they adopted so long ago?

It is dangerous to question Communist Party policy, but some inside of China are doing so.  These include Ye Tingfang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).  Professor Ye was recently quoted as saying that “In the beginning, it was believed that our big population would be a hindrance to our economic development. But over the past decades, experience has told us otherwise.  Japan, for instance, has little in the way of resources and boasts one of the highest population densities in the world, but it is a thriving economy and one of the richest nations. Labor is the most important source of wealth.”

Or, to put it another way, human beings are the ultimate resource.

Steven Mosher is the President of Population Research Institute.

10. Say No To Dr. Death, Jack Kevorkian - July 24, 2007

After his release from prison on June 1 for "good behaviour," Jack Kevorkian, a.k.a. Dr. Death, resumed his promotion of assisted suicide as a humane conclusion for the terminally ill. He told Larry King that he felt it was important to speak to young people in high school and college about these issues.

Apparently the University of Florida agrees. Dr. Kevorkian is reportedly scheduled to speak to the students there and will be paid $50,000 to do so by the University of Florida student government association.

This invitation is an affront to everyone who stands for the value and the dignity of every human life. Dr. Kevorkian is determined to instil the future leaders of our nation with his twisted ethics of euthanasia. We need everyone to join us in telling the President of the University of Florida that it is unacceptable to invite Jack Kevorkian to spread his message of death and violence on the campus. Please help us prevent a culture of death by using the form below to sign our Say No to Dr.

Death Petition

A Petition to University of Florida President Dr. James Bernard Machen

To: President Dr. James Bernard Machen and the Student Government of the University of Florida

According to an article in the St. Petersburg Times, the University of Florida has extended an invitation to Jack Kevorkian, a.k.a. Dr. Death, to speak at an event sponsored by the Student Government. The article states the University has agreed to pay Kevorkian $50,000.

The defrocked "Dr." Kevorkian was recently released from prison for "good behaviour" following his conviction for second-degree murder.

He stated publicly he wants to get his message of legalized assisted suicide out to "[the] young people, in high school and college."

It is unacceptable for the University of Florida to give a platform to Jack Kevorkian, a man who wilfully helped take peoples lives, some of whose only ailment was depression, and pay him $50,000 to spread his violent message of "mercy killing" to the students of the University of Florida.

I therefore respectfully request and demand that the University and the Student Government rescind the invitation to Jack Kevorkian and that he not be paid $50,000.

Thank you very much.

11. Senate Inaction On Age-Of-Consent Bill Endangers Children – June 25, 2007

Dear friend,

As you might know, earlier this spring the House of Commons passed Bill C-22, which raises the age at which, a boy or girl can consent to s-x with an adult from 14 to 16 years. Since then this important bill has been languishing in the Senate instead of receiving the fast-track passage it deserves. Now Senators have decided to commence a three month holiday without passing the bill, thereby endangering the safety and dignity of the young men and women as predators continue to exploit these adolescents without fear of legal consequences.

In response to this we have created an petition asking Senators to either return to Ottawa and convene a special session of the Senate to pass this important piece of legislation, or alternatively, to make the passage of C-22 their top priority upon returning to Ottawa in September for the Fall Parliamentary session.

This is a non-partisan issue that all Canadians can agree on. Please take a moment to tell our Senators how important it is to you that they protect our children by passing C-22 as early as possible by clicking on the URL below and adding your signature to this petition. http://www.gopetition.com/online/12972.html

You can also download and print a copy of this petition and have your friends and neighbours sign it. To download a copy of the petition now go to: http://www.canadianvalues.ca/Petitions/Age_of_Consent.pdf

Finally, in order to obtain the largest number signatures possible, please forward this email as widely, and post to as many forums and blogs as possible.
