Age of consent
We are living, today, in the most child-unfriendly society that has existed. There is little room for children in public life, and little time for them in the double-income structure of the “modern” family, even when it remains intact. Children are actually banned from many apartment buildings and upscale residential environments, and where they are permitted, grow up in neighbourhoods physically adapted to cars and other heavy machinery, but not to them.
Play areas are allotted in public parks, where they are tolerated under conditions of intense supervision, and daycares now proliferate where the smaller ones can be warehoused during office hours, so that they do not become an impediment to their mothers’ professional lives. The older ones continue to be warehoused in unionized and bureaucratized public shelters, which are misleadingly identified as “schools”. There, they become the subjects of government experiments in social engineering, designed to make them politically correct.
But our repulsion from children begins much earlier, and is quite literally murderous. Under Canadian law, mothers may have their children aborted at any point during pregnancy -- even on the delivery table -- and that boundary will soon be stretched with “liberal” laws on euthanasia. Parents are, moreover, under social encouragement to eliminate a child promptly, should intrusive medical procedures determine that the creature in its mother’s womb is imperfect in any way.
At the other end of childhood, when adolescents are progressively released into urban and semi-urban surroundings that resemble the old red light districts, they are now commonly deprived of the crucial parental influence of a father, by family law that effectively enables their mother to exchange him for cash. But this is only the end-point of legislative innovations that have anyway transferred nearly every traditional paternal function, except the earning of a paycheque, to the state.
It should thus be no surprise that our young -- where they survive at all -- are turned out today wearing the faces you may see on public transit and the sidewalks. Unhappy, empty, and cynical, would be among words most apt to describe many I see pass me every day, from a society that has delegitimized childhood.
Am I exaggerating? I would hope so, though I am not sure. I am aware of the heroic efforts of many parents -- principally of the sort often characterized as “religious zealots” -- to resist the prevailing current. And in the poor urban neighbourhood in which I live, I glimpse many little acts of real love from mothers who are, often as not, a child’s only ally. The instinct to parental responsibility and affection seems sufficiently powerful to weather considerable adversity, but remember how many of these young parents are themselves the graduates of broken and blighted homes.
All this necessary preamble, to set my stage for a minor moment in Parliament this last week, when the minority Liberal government (minus its “socially conservative” members) combined with the separatist BQ, and the socialist NDP, to squelch a Conservative private member’s bill that would have raised the age of sexual consent from 14 to 16 years of age. This would have brought Canada into line with most Western countries, where it is at least 16, and sometimes 18 years.
Irwin Cotler, the justice minister, led the mocking chorus against the bill, casting it as an affront to human rights, and an attack on what he called “puppy love”. This, surely, on a level with Paul Martin’s previous “You can’t cherry-pick rights!” defence of “same-sex marriage” -- an argument so broad that it could itself be used to justify constitutional protection for paedophilia.
The bill (C-313) was explicitly presented as a measure against the sexual predation of children, which contrary to the assumptions of the majority in the House, is a real and present problem. Its sponsor, Rick Casson of Lethbridge, made clear he was open to a “close-in-age” amendment to make its principle perfectly clear. This was ignored. Instead, Mr Cotler said the existing Criminal Code, and pending government legislation (Bill C-2), would adequately protect children against “exploitation”.
Since the new legislation has been introduced by Mr Cotler, I frankly don’t believe it will. More likely, we will soon see the age of consent for anal intercourse (which our Criminal Code now sets at 18) reduced to match the remarkably low general age of consent. That is, after all, among the current demands of “Egale” (the “gay and lesbian” lobby group): and what Egale wants, Egale gets from this Liberal government.

PAPER IN CANADA PRINTS HATE COLUMN AGAINST THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Largest Paper in Canada Prints Hate Column Against the Catholic Church
TORONTO, October 11, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Toronto Star, the
largest circulation paper in Canada, has printed a column which is being
regarded by some Catholics as a clear case of a hate column against the
Catholic Church. Celebrated Star columnist Joey Slinger's column entitled
"With this Vatican, all's fair in faith and war" appears in the 'news'
section of today's paper on page A2. The Star, often referred to as the
Red Star by critics, has a long history of bias in its reporting on issues
of traditional morality and any institutions supporting that morality.
In the column, Slinger takes issue with the Pope and Bishops of the
Catholic Church who are considering refusal of communion for those
Catholics who obstinately persist in grave public sin, such as
pro-abortion and pro-same-sex 'marriage' politicians. "So the Pope is
thinking about excommunicating our Prime Minister, is he? In the religion
game, that's called hardball," writes Slinger.
Slinger continues, "So if the Pope wants to play hardball, fine. We can
play hardball too. How about he can excommunicate our Prime Minister and
we can get rid of the tax exemption on Catholic Church property? What a
windfall that would be. Millions. Millions upon millions. Mega-millions if
we make it retroactive . . . They'd have to start selling their real
estate. Failing that, we'd have to seize it and auction it off. It's
happened before. It was a fairly popular medieval screw-you gesture."
The blatent anti-Catholicism in the article has deeply offended Catholics.
LifeSiteNews.com has spoken to some who are considering launching human
rights complaints. Slinger, a "humour" columnist, presumably assumes
the
column can be passed off as humour but critics respond that had the same
type of comments been made of Muslims or Jews the Star would never have
printed such an offinsive, threatening article. They are urging Catholics
and others to contact the Star and also complain to the Ontario Human
Rights Commission and the Ontario Press Council about the article as being
extremely offensive and an attempt to intimidate a religious denomination
to change its beliefs and internal disciplines.
Following the diatribe Slinger adds, "I hope this won't be mistaken for
some kind of threat. It's just that if the Pope feels inclined to give us
something to think about, we might as well give him something to think
about." Concluding, "All's fair in faith and war. But isn't it strange
that the further we move ahead into the 21st century, the further the
Vatican moves backward into the 12th?"

REPLY TO THE HATE COLUMN IN TORONTO "RED" STAR
By Joseph A. Gamero
Dear Registrar,
To: The Star's Bureau of Accuracy and Public Editor.
Dear Editor,
I am appalled at the insolence and downright hatred exuding from Joey Slinger's
column entitled "With this Vatican, all's fair in faith and war,"
in the Toronto Star, Oct/11/05.
If instead of hatred against Christians, it had been against Islam or Judaism,
the author would have been charged and convicted with hatred and discrimination,
I'm sure.
In fact, I'm prepared to bet that the Star wouldn't have publish his discriminatory
diatribe. Since it is against Catholics, one of the largest religions in the
world, and the most hated one by Canada's left, it seems to be fair game.
I protest against such disrespectful and hatred-charged article, and wish to
file a complaint against both the Toronto Star and the author of the article.
Joseph A. Gamero
Hamilton, ON.
Would the Star have published something like this, but against homosexuals?
Of course not!
This is a new low, even by your standards!

"TIME MAGAZINE'S" 'GAY TEEN' COVER STORY WRITTEN
BY HOMOSEXUAL

---------------------------------------------------------------------
'Time' Magazine's 'Gay Teen' Cover Story Written By Homosexual
October 6, 2005 - John Cloud, a writer for Time magazine has just written a
lengthy cover story for the October 10 edition that cleverly promotes the homosexual
agenda. Though not mentioned in the article, Cloud is a long-time homosexual
journalist and activist who has been given several awards by homosexual organizations
for his "gay" affirmative reporting.
In September, 2005, Cloud was given a second place award for "The Governor's Secret Life" by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. And, in 2004, he was given an award by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for his article, "The New Face Of Gay Power." And, in a Columbia Journalism Review weblog (April 21, 2005), Cloud admits to having a "boy friend."
In 2000, Cloud wrote an article on the Boy Scouts, comparing them to the KKK and asking whether or not the Boy Scouts had the right to freedom of association. The Media Research Center reported on Cloud's homosexual activism disguised as journalism in its April, 25, 2000 issue.
In Cloud's latest homosexual activism disguised as journalism for Time magazine, he portrays "gay" teens in a sympathetic light and cites the growing influence of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in promoting homosexuality on high school campuses.
He also downplays the role that ex-gay ministries contribute in helping individuals struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions.
Traditional Values Coalition Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon has published a commentary on the Cloud's pro-homosexual propaganda piece. We are reprinting it in full here:
'Time' Magazine Surveys 'Gay' Teen Trends
By Rev. Louis P. Sheldon
Chairman, Traditional Values Coalition
Washington, DC - The cover story in the October 10 issue of Time magazine surveys recent trends among so-called "gay" teenagers throughout the United States.
The article is written by John Cloud, who is never identified as a homosexual advocate by Time. Cloud is a long-time activist who disguises homosexual propaganda as journalism.
In fact, Cloud has received awards for his pro-homosexual writings from the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Cloud once penned an article for Time magazine subtly linking the Boy Scouts to the KKK.
Cloud paints a rosy picture of growing numbers of alleged "gay" teens who are organizing on campuses.
These growing numbers of teens are being encouraged by such groups as the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and by homosexual college professors like Dr. Ritch Savin-Williams, author of "The New Gay Teenager."
GLSEN has set up homosexual recruitment efforts in schools known as Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs and exploits the sexual confusion of thousands of trouble teenagers.
What was glaringly absent from the Time magazine article was any mention of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organization of professional psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and licensed counselors, who have written extensively on the origins and cures of unwanted same-sex attractions.
NARTH President Dr. Joseph Nicolosi and his wife Linda, have written a helpful book titled, "A Parent's Guide To Preventing Homosexuality," that describes the origins of homosexual feelings and how parents can help their children overcome these desires.
In addition, NARTH Scientific Advisory Committee member, Dr. Sander Breiner, a psychoanalyst and former professor of psychiatry, has written a compelling research paper on the dangers of teens "coming out" as homosexuals. Dr. Breiner notes that neuroscientists have found that the developing brain of the adolescent is significantly influenced by external emotional and social factors. He writes: "Homosexual indoctrination (direct or subtle) coercive or seductive can organically affect brain and sexual physiologic development to a modest or minimal degree. It cannot permanently produce homosexuality. However, it can certainly lead to a variety of difficulties commonly including hurt self-esteem, distortions in living, depression, selection of life goals, and other problems .. Any attitude by society and particularly educators, that homosexuality is a reasonable or alternative lifestyle can significantly contribute to psychopathology in this vulnerable age."
In essence, the teen's developing brain can be altered by pro-homosexual teachings and sexual behaviors-and create psychopathologies that may take years to overcome.
GLSEN and other pro-homosexual forces on high school campuses are doing a grave disservice to teens who think they are homosexual. The fact is that homosexuality is a self-destructive behavior, not a fixed identity. Even many homosexual activists like Dr. Ritch Savin-Williams are now claiming that sexuality is fluid-which is why we are also seeing a growing movement on campuses to normalize transgenderism, cross-dressing, and bisexuality.
The truth is that homosexual behaviors lead to a whole range of serious physical and emotional difficulties including oral and anal cancers, incurable STDs, HIV infections, and rampant drug use. Is homosexuality really a behavior we wish to encourage among teens? I think not.
TAKE ACTION: Read and distribute TVC's report, "Homosexuals Recruit Public
School Children" and access TVC's GLSEN-Watch web site. Write a letter
to Time magazine and use the statistics and information in these reports to
tell the truth about homosexual recruitment on campuses. Ask why Cloud's history
of homosexual advocacy was not mentioned in the article.
MPs vote against raising age of sexual consent
CTV.ca News Staff
A Conservative MP's attempt to raise the age of consent has failed, with a resounding defeat in the House of Commons.
When Conservative MP Rick Casson's bill was put to a vote Wednesday night, 99 parliamentarians voted in favour of increasing the minimum age for sex by two years, to 16.
A total of 167 MPs voted against the bill.
Under existing law, 14-year-olds can legally have sex in Canada. Casson wanted the minimum age raised to 16, in the hope increasing the scope of the law would protect children from sexual predators.
The Lethbridge, Alberta MP had the support of his fellow Conservatives, as well as several members of the Liberal Party.
"I support it basically on the important principle that people need to be protected," Liberal MP Maurizo Bevilacqua told CTV News ahead of the vote.
And Liberal MP Dan McTeague agreed, criticizing the existing law for doing little to protect young teenagers from sexual exploitation.

Assisted Suicide Bill Denounced
By Mary-Jane Egan, London Free Press Reporter, July 5, 2005
Canadians should be vigilant in battling a bill that would legalize assisted suicide in this country, a meeting of the London City Kiwanis heard yesterday.
"Make no mistake that this bill introduces the slippery slope we’ve seen in the Netherlands where people who don’t want to be euthanized are," warned Jean Echlin, a longtime palliative care nurse and vice-president of the national Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.
"Canadians have to wake up because it’s coming."
Echlin said Bill C-407 — a private member’s bill tabled late last month by Bloc Québécois MP Francine Lalonde — should be met by a strong lobby effort to stop it.
The bill would amend the Criminal Code to make it legal to help a person die. [More]

WEEKLY COMMENTARY
"Just Between Us"
October 10, 2005
Corruption has been built into Canada's system of government
The lady who clips and files newspaper stories for the Citizens Centre asked us two weeks ago Monday where she should put David Dingwall.
In addition to running the Canadian Mint, it seems the former Chretien cabinet minister is a "registered federal lobbyist," and the bureaucrats were giving him a hard time about not completing his paperwork on one contract. "Lobbying under review," said the headline.
"Do you want this filed under Parliament/Policy, or under Corruption?" asked our clipper.
His offence sounded pretty harmless to me, but she said, "Oh, there'll be more--there always is," and filed it under Corruption.
Sure enough, it was followed the next day by "Dingwall big spender as head of Canadian Mint", and the day after that by "Dingwall resigns as head of Mint".
Then came loads of details on how this one toiling public servant managed to cost Canadian taxpayers over $1 million a year in salary and expenses--$13,228 in one day of travel, $1.29 for a pack of Mint chewing gum, etc.
And then "Dingwall to get $500,000 severance"--something he clearly has no legal right to.
All the same, as of last week John McCallum the minister responsible (or irresponsible) was still claiming the government legally must pay Dingwall some severance, though he still couldn't explain why.
All of which calls to mind Andre Ouellet, former boss of Canada Post. The same "minister irresponsible" had to order Ouellet a year ago to produce documentary justification for the $2 million he had claimed as corporate expenses.
McCallum is still waiting for him to do it.
In a country with more honesty than Canada, the Liberal party would be dead. But on the last poll I saw (Decima, late September), the Conservatives were still trailing the Liberals 10 percent in Ontario, and 7 percent nation-wide.
Eastern voters say they don't like corrupt politicians. I'm sure they don't. But they keep voting for corrupt policies.
They imagine that somehow you can find honest politicians to engage in the massive vote-buying and interest-group pandering that has become the defining characteristic of Canadian public policy.
Any party that might even question it is rejected as "scary" and "extremist."
The Oxford dictionary defines "corruption" as "moral deterioration, especially widespread."
Corruption doesn't start with spendthrift good-old-boys like Dingwall and Ouellet milking the system while everyone looks the other way, or shopping bags stuffed with sponsorship cash going secretly to political campaign offices.
That comes later.
It starts with popular but dishonest political language and spending aimed at buying votes en masse.
Employment Insurance, for example--a program so popular in Dingwall's native Cape Breton that when the Chretien government cut the extra benefits paid to maritimers, Nova Scotians responded by throwing out every Liberal MP in the province in the next election.
The Liberals took the hint, partially restored the benefits, and Nova Scotians partially restored the Liberals.
In fact, EI is not "insurance" at all, just another gigantic regional equalization program, in which year-round workers in high-employment areas like Ontario and Alberta subsidize seasonal workers in low-employment areas like Cape Breton.
When we base our public policies on such blatant dishonesty, why be so shocked when it spreads to everything else?

MPS TO VOTE ON BILL TO LEGALIZE ASSISTED SUICIDE
In about five weeks' time, Members of Parliament will be asked to asked to give approval-in-principle to a bill that would legalize assisted suicide in Canada.
On the table is private member's bill C-407, which Bloc Quebecois MP Francine Lalonde had introduced in June.
Its aim is to amend the Criminal Code in order to give Canadians as young as 17, who are terminally ill or in unrelieved severe pain, the right to have a medical practitioner help them to end their lives. They must appear to be lucid and have clearly stated on at least two separate occasions a free and informed wish to die.
As Sun Media reported this week, MPs are scheduled to debate and vote at the second reading of C-407 on October 31.
Pro-lifers are appalled that Parliament would even be considering such legislation. "It's so generally worded as to be a virtual licence to kill in almost any circumstance and offers no reassurance at all to people who are looking for safeguards," Dr. Will Johnston, co-chair of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition of B.C., told Today's Family News.
Johnston adds that MPs need only look at what is happening in the Netherlands, where euthanasia is legal. "The situation has now deteriorated to the point where they euthanize numerous babies born with spina bifida," he said.
It is rare that private members bills ever become law. But Pavel Reid, the director of the Office of Life and Family with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver, is concerned that the government has so far not signalled its opposition to C-407.
While not publicly endorsing the bill, Justice Minister Irwin Cotler has suggested it is perhaps time that MPs debate the issue. "Parliament is the best venue for a debate that must balance the issue of dying with dignity with concerns from the disabled," he said.
Pro-life Liberal MP Paul Steckle, on the other hand, believes C-407 will be defeated. He doubts the government would want to raise such a hot-button issue on the eve of a federal election. But he also concedes that sooner or later, "we're going to have to deal with it."
And when that debate comes, Reid warns, "It's going to play out similarly to the marriage issue, where people who were opposed to changing the definition of marriage were painted as basically being the side that was less concerned with human dignity and human rights and human flourishing and so on and so forth.
"So we've got to be very careful to make sure that we don't get painted into that corner."
A September 2003 Pollara survey found that Canadians are divided on whether to legalize euthanasia, with 49 per cent in favour, 37 per cent opposed, and 13 per cent undecided.

Cord Blood Treatment Shows Regeneration of Injured Spinal Cord, When Will Tax Funded Killing of Human Embryos Stop?
To: National Desk
Contact: Phil Magnan, director of Biblical Family Advocates, BFA, 619-933-1839
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 28 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Biblical Family Advocates is applauding the work of "Korean scientists who have used umbilical cord blood stem cells to restore feeling and mobility to a spinal cord injury patient," this according to an article at Life News.com entitled Adult Stem Cell Research Treats Spinal Cord Injury Patient.
According to the article, "The patient could move her hips and feel her hip skin on day 15 after transplantation. On day 25 after transplantation her feet responded to stimulation. On post operative day (POD) 7, motor activity was noticed and improved gradually in her lumbar Para vertebral and hip muscles. She could maintain an upright position by herself on POD 13. From POD 15 she began to elevate both lower legs about 1 cm, and hip flexor muscle activity gradually improved until POD 41. " The patient "also showed regeneration of the spinal cord at the injured cite."
"Though this is only one case, it shows astounding hope for those who have been afflicted by spinal cord injuries. With these kinds of treatments why are States like California funding the unproven and unethical killing machine of embryonic stem cell research? California is in fiscal crisis, and yet will waste 3 Billion dollars to research treatments that are decades away. There is no guarantee that those treatments will ever appear. Why do we waste tax payer money on risky research when we can invest our dollars in the ethical work of using adult and cord blood stem cells?" so says Phil Magnan of Biblical Family Advocates.
Magnan went on to say, "It should be understood that the therapeutic cloning of embryos is simply the growing of embryos to harvest their parts, which have not been proven to cure anyone. Whereas, cord blood and adult stems cells not only have amazing treatments and cures, but do not have to kill innocent life. It is reprehensible to hinge the treatment of the infirmed upon the slaughter of the innocent unborn, using embryonic stems cells, especially when we have these kinds of amazing treatments."
"There is something to consider in the use of embryonic stems cells and the golden rule given by Christ. Would you want to be killed for your parts? Of course not, then why do we allow it to be done to others?"
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Death by dehydration is agonizing. Dr. David Stevens worked in Africa for thirteen years. There he saw first hand complications associated with dehydration. Here is his description, "As dehydration begins there is extreme thirst, dry mouth and thick saliva. The patient develops severe cramping in the arms and legs. In misery, the patient tries to cry but there are no tears. The patient experiences severe abdominal cramps, nausea and dry heaving as the stomach and intestines dry out. The skin and lips crack and the tongue swells. As mucus membranes dry out and break down, patients suffer from severe nose bleeds and a patients hands and feet become extremely cold as the circulatory system begins to shut down and move blood to vital organs in a attempt to keep the person alive. The patient has problems urinating and is prone to excruciating headaches."
Dr. Stevens claims that contrary to those who paint a picture of a gentle dying process, "death by dehydration is a cruel, inhuman and often agonizing death."
A judge has finally spoken: Assisted Feeding Is Not Medical Care. New York Supreme Court Judge, Martin Ritholtz has ruled that tube feeding constitutes basic care, not medical treatment. That it is "No different from washing, turning or grooming a dying patient." (The Jewish Week, 14 Apr 2005)
In closing, the truth continues to conquer: "Awake After Ten Years". A 43-year-old New York firefighter, who had been in a coma for ten years after an injury, suddenly woke up. Asking for his wife, he talked for four hours with her and his sons. "How long have I been away", he asked? His family told him almost ten years; he thought it was only three months.
Together, let us continue to value and protect human life from womb to tomb.
God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1. Abuse of mentally ill is reported in Turkey
Turkey has made great strides in developing its society and economy to meet European standards in recent years. After waiting for decades, formal talks on its membership are scheduled to begin Oct. 3. But as with many developing countries, some sectors of its society lag far behind the rest, including its mental health system.
Of all the abuses witnessed by Rosenthal and his investigators, none was more disturbing than the use of electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT, without anesthesia to treat a wide range of illnesses in both adults and children. The World Health Organization has called for a ban on "unmodified" or "direct" ECT and states that children should never be subjected to the treatment in any form.
The therapy, in which an electrical current is passed through the brain, was developed in the 1930s and continues to be used in mainstream psychiatry to treat a limited number of ills. But it is normally administered with anesthesia and muscle relaxants. Without them, it can be painful, terrifying and dangerous. Patients can suffer broken jaws or cracked vertebrae during the artificially induced seizures.
The report quotes a 28-year-old electroshock patient at the Bakirkoy Psychiatric Hospital as saying, "I felt like dying."

ITEM #2. Netherlands Set to Give Go-Ahead to Child Euthanasia
(LifeSiteNews.com) - Dutch officials are set to give child euthanasia the go-ahead. The practice is already widespread there with an estimated 15-20 cases per year despite it being illegal. No paediatricians have been prosecuted. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia in 2001.
The governing Christian Democrats said they will approve the Groningen Protocol, the child euthanasia guidelines named after the euthanist doctors from Groningen University Medical Centre. The protocol suggests that euthanasia be permitted when a child is terminally ill with no hope of recovery and in pain, and that parents are in agreement with the opinions of two doctors.
The government plans to set up a commission that will review that all the conditions have been met, or else a public prosecutor will become involved. So far no doctors committing child euthanasia have been prosecuted, even though it is still illegal.
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia paediatrician and ethicist Dr. Chris Feudtner told the AP he vehemently opposes the Dutch government's decision. "I categorically do not endorse ending people's lives with the argument that it's alleviating their suffering," he said. "I think too often the impulse is to resort to extreme measures because we're not being effective enough in the management of pain. If you allow it to occur, it will occur in cases where it is not ethical, period," he added.
The vice-president of the Pontifical Academy for Life roundly condemned the Dutch proposal to extend euthanasia to children under the age of 12 last year. Bishop Elio Sgreccia said that with this policy, "the final boundary will have been crossed."

ITEM #3. Vietnam forecasts HIV incidence to rise this year
Eighty per cent of those infected, mostly sex workers and drug users, were expected to be in the 20-39 age bracket, it said, noting that metros like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, and northern border provinces Son La and Quang Ninh would have most of the cases.
The number was expected to go up to 300,000 by 2010 from the present 241,000, the ministry said further.
In the first half of this year, Vietnam had 6,704 new HIV patients, of whom 1,377 developed full-blown AIDS, and 670 fatalities.
The country recently started a survey of HIV/AIDS among the wider population, as opposed to just high-risk groups like drug users and sex workers, to detect the infection rate in the community.
It hopes to reduce the infection rate among its 82-million population to below 0.3 per cent by 2010, and keep it unchanged after 2020.
As part of efforts to achieve these targets, the government has stepped up publicity about HIV/AIDS, including recommending a safe lifestyle and behavior -- like encouraging youths to follow the "ABC" approach to prevention (Abstinence, Being faithful and Condom use) and keep away from risks like drugs and having sex with sex workers.

ITEM #4. Study findings suggest over 6.7 million embryonic children have died during IVF
A recently published study confirms that when in vitro fertilization children are frozen for storage and subsequently defrosted for use, there is massive loss of life -- 85 percent die, or 6.7 million children thus far.

ITEM #5. Suicide rates 'linked to spirituality decline'
(The decline in spirituality among young people is contributing to rising rates of suicide, an expert said today ahead of a conference on the issue. - AP)
The 10th annual conference of the Irish Association of Suicidology is due to discuss how the fall-off in religion has left people without the support they would previously have depended on to prevent them becoming suicidal.
The meeting, which is being held this week in Armagh, will also discuss the ethics of assisted suicide and the implications of euthanasia on patients, doctors and palliative care.
Fine Gael TD and Chairman of the Irish Association of Suicidology Dan Neville said the reasons people took their own lives were extremely complex. In answering the question of why people committed suicide, multifaceted influences must be considered, Mr Neville said.
"The fall-off in the practice of religion is accepted as part of the societal change that has influenced an increase in suicide levels.

ITEM #6. First IVF baby born of single father
India's first surrogate in vitro fertilisation (IVF) baby of a single parent has been born in a city clinic, raising questions about the newborn's legal status and the single father's parenthood rights.
Amit Banerjee, whose childless marriage had ended in divorce years ago, is apparently the country's first single father whose son was born through IVF method on Sunday.

ITEM #7. Coma Italian 'heard everything'
(An Italian man has emerged from a two-year-long coma claiming he retained his powers of hearing and comprehension throughout his illness, his family say.)
Salvatore Crisafulli, 38, is recovering at home after years spent in what doctors had termed a "near-dead" state.
He is quoted as saying that his "miraculous" recovery proves euthanasia cannot be justified for coma patients.
An Italian ethics body is meanwhile set to recommend the mandatory care of all unconscious patients, reports say.
A national bio-ethics committee, which advises lawmakers, is expected to recommend that the state has a duty to keep all such patients alive - even those who do not want their lives prolonged, according to Reuters news agency.
The committee voted in favour of the motion last month but has yet to submit its final paper.

According to Italian media, Mr Crisafulli claims to have overheard doctors saying he was not conscious.
"I understood everything and I cried in desperation," he said.

ITEM #8. First Trio "Married" in The Netherlands
The Netherlands and Belgium were the first countries to give full marriage rights to homosexuals. In the United States some politicians propose "civil unions" that give homosexual couples the full benefits and responsibilities of marriage. These civil unions differ from marriage only in name.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands polygamy has been legalised in all but name. Last Friday the first civil union of three partners was registered. Victor de Bruijn (46) from Roosendaal "married" both Bianca (31) and Mirjam (35) in a ceremony before a notary who duly registered their civil union.
"I love both Bianca and Mirjam, so I am marrying them both," Victor said. He had previously been married to Bianca. Two and a half years ago they met Mirjam Geven through an internet chatbox. Eight weeks later Mirjam deserted her husband and came to live with Victor and Bianca. After Mirjam's divorce the threesome decided to marry.
Victor: "A marriage between three persons is not possible in the Netherlands, but a civil union is. We went to the notary in our marriage costume and exchanged rings. We consider this to be just an ordinary marriage."
Asked by journalists to tell the secret of their peculiar relationship, Victor explained that there is no jealousy between them. "But this is because Mirjam and Bianca are bisexual. I think that with two heterosexual women it would be more difficult." Victor stressed, however, that he is "a one hundred per cent heterosexual" and that a fourth person will not be allowed into the "marriage." They want to take their marriage obligations seriously: "to be honest and open with each other and not philander."

ITEM #9. Canadian Hospital Ordered to Pay Lesbian $19,000 for Refusing In Vitro Fertilization
(LifeSiteNews.com) - A lesbian woman from Quebec has won a human rights suit she filed after being denied in-vitro fertilization allegedly because of her sexual orientation, forcing the hospital clinic to pay her $19,000.
Helen Zylberszac charged that the McGill reproductive centre in Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital allegedly denied her IVF treatment in 2002 because she was not accompanied by a male partner. "One of the doctors said if I had of shown up with a man, they would have treated me," she told CTV News.
The Quebec Human Rights Commission decreed that the hospital pay her $10,000 in moral damages $9,000 in physical damages. The ruling may be appealed into the regular court system.
Policy in some fertility clinics reflected that of adoption agencies, namely that in the best interests of the child, children should be provided with a father and a mother. However, Canada has officially made such determinations illegal in the case of IVF.
Federal law enacted in 2004, Bill C-13, states: "Persons who seek to undergo assisted reproduction procedures must not be discriminated against, including on the basis of their sexual orientation or marital status."

ITEM #10. S Korea's Catholic Church funding stem-cell research
(Is three the new two? Moves in France and elsewhere to stave off population decline are drawing attention to the importance of bigger families.)
After decades of propaganda in favour of the two-child family, it has suddenly become polite (and which nation is more polite than the French?) to speak of three - not only in Europe, where the average birthrate is 1.4 children per woman, but also in east Asia where it is down to 1.2 in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. As recently as the 1980s South Koreans were told, "even two are a lot", and they could get themselves sterilised at public expense until last year. Now they can have free reversals and free birth care for their third or fourth child.
Compared with these low-fertility countries, France looks very well-off with a buoyant birthrate of 1.9 - the highest in the European Union except for Ireland, on 2.0. According to experts, that is precisely because of family-friendly policies which make it easy for working women in France to have children - 81 per cent of women between 25 and 49 are in work. The effect of a large immigrant population with higher birthrates is generally not mentioned.

ITEM #11. Genetic Screening of Embryos to be "Regulated" by Health Canada
(LifeSiteNews.com) - The Health Canada is ready to take the next step towards implementing Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, where eugenics rules and only the perfect live. A Health Canada media release announced that it would be considering providing IVF facilities with guidelines for preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) of embryos.
PGD involves allowing newly created in vitro embryos to grow to a certain stage, removing one of their cells and examining it for genetic "flaws" that might lead to illnesses or imperfections such as cystic fibrosis or Down's Syndrome. Proponents of PGD say it not only "screens out" potential genetic problems in children at the embryonic stage, but it increases the chances of carrying a pregnancy to term for older women.
The catch is, however, that "screening" does not mean curing, but instead a eugenic selection, after which the embryonic child not selected is killed or used for research.
Campaign Life Coalition, (CLC), said that the procedure "exposes our callous disregard for human life." CLC's National President, Jim Hughes, said, "While we have compassion for couples with genetic problems, the wanton disposal of human beings and their use as experimental 'guinea pigs' is appalling,"
As with most new reproductive technologies (NRT), the uses of selection does not stop at killing the "unfit," but is now used to select for "donor siblings," those children created and grown specifically to serve as tissue farms for sick siblings or parents.
Health Canada justifies pro-life objections to in vitro fertilization when it places the child firmly in the category of a commercial commodity that can be "used." "The child born as a result can then be used as a source of compatible tissue, either from umbilical cord blood or bone marrow, for the affected child," says a soon-to-be published Health Canada document.
PGD has raised old spectres of the early 20th century eugenics movement that proposed to create a more "perfect" human race, free of congenital problems. Health Canada confirms these fears with its suggestion that PGD could be used to predict late-onset diseases such as cancer. Health Canada spokesman Bill Maga says the department plans to introduce PGD regulations in May.
In the months leading up to the passage of the Canadian Reproductive Technologies law, CLC lobbyists repeatedly warned legislators of the error of thinking that the expected regulations would do anything to stop the outrages against embryonic human life.
"Human beings are not created for the purpose of tissue and organs for another person," said Mary Ellen Douglas, National organizer of Campaign Life Coalition. "This is the Pandora's Box which Bill C-6 opened when it allowed embryo experimentation and gave the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) a green light."

ITEM #12. Canada Considers Further Legalizing Prostitution While Amsterdam Mayor Admits Legalization's Failure
(LifeSiteNews.com) - A Liberal dominated government committee looking into prostitution is recommending the Canadian government legalize solicitation so that prostitutes may legally offer sex for money. Meanwhile the mayor of Amsterdam has for the first time admitted that the Dutch experiment to curb abuse by legalizing prostitution has failed miserably.
Policemen in Amsterdam's infamous red light district were quoted by Dutch media Friday as saying, "We are in the midst of modern slavery." Due to the legalization of prostitution in the Netherlands in 2000, police are hampered in confronting the horrors that are characteristic of the sex trade.
Even Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen, who as recently as four months ago was quoted in the media as praising the legalization of prostitution has been forced to admit the scheme's failure. "Almost five years after the lifting of the brothel ban, we have to acknowledge that the aims of the law have not been reached", said Cohen, as quoted by NCR. "Lately we've received more and more signals that abuse still continues."
Nonetheless, the Canadian politicians who took part in a committee on solicitation in the sex industry are ready to call on the government to legalize solicitation. "It should be legalized and regulated for the sake of people who are working in the industry," said Liberal MP Keith Martin who sat on the committee.
The only Conservative MP on the committee, Art Hangar, expressed grave reservations about the committee decision. "These girls should be given every opportunity to get out of this high-risk activity and take the money out of it," he said. "There's too much organized crime, and there's a potential for even greater involvement of organized crime if you go the other (legalization) way."
Meanwhile in the Netherlands, the Red Light District has become a multi million dollar business, with a yearly turnover of 83 million Euros, according to NCR. Police are so hampered by prostitution's legalization that policemen report criminal reports by women "are gathering dust everywhere in the Netherlands."

1) Constitutional Amendment Campaign – Alberta Launch
United Mothers, Fathers and Friends is pleased to announce our partnership with Enshrine Marriage Canada (EMC). Together this Tuesday we will launch a massive campaign to mobilize 100,000 Albertans in support of a constitutional amendment motion this fall in the Alberta legislature. Ultimately, enshrining marriage in the Constitution is the only way to protect an institution that serves the best interests of children and society. From Alberta we will press forward to other provinces and finally to Ottawa.
Read the Press Release Here: www.unitedmothers.ca
BACKGROUND
We reach out with kindness and respect to those who experience same-gender attraction. Nevertheless, as a society we cannot condone governments’ and judges' actions in re-defining marriage.
Traditional marriage has served as the foundation of societies throughout time. It plays a critical role in the creation, nurturing, and protection of strong families, which are the cornerstone of every successful society.
Although family circumstances vary, and no family is perfect, social research clearly demonstrates that children’s needs are best met by the nurturing of both a mother and father. The Government’s recent re-definition of marriage is a profound social experiment that will intentionally deprive children of the right to both a mother and a father.
2) Take Action – Albertans Vote in E-Referendum
The concerns of Albertans over the re-definition of marriage have been ignored by the Federal Government. Further, the Alberta Government has not yet made good on its promise to exhaust every option to preserve traditional marriage in our province.
To give Albertans a say on the future of marriage in Canada, Enshrine Marriage Canada in conjunction with United Mothers, Fathers and Friends is launching an ‘E-Referendum’ asking Albertans for their views on same-sex marriage.
“I’m very anxious to see the results of the e-referendum. If the results are in favour of traditional marriage, as I am confident they will be, this will give Alberta’s politicians the consent from the people of Alberta to move ahead with a resolution,” said EMC’s Bill Gairdner.

4) Parliament Fails to Raise the Age of Consent
“In this document, as hard as it is to believe, the minister [Cotler] argues against raising the age of consent because of potential costs associated with increased prosecution of such cases….Throughout debates in the House of Commons examining C-313, the Minister of Justice repeatedly trivialized this issue by referring to it as ‘puppy-love’ when the real issue is providing meaningful protection for the most vulnerable members of our society - our children….The Minister of Justice told the House and the public that this bill was unacceptable because it would have criminalized teens then he turned around and told the Liberal caucus that there was in fact a close-in-age exemption to protect teens involved with other teens…how can the Minister of Justice make two contradictory statements and be telling the truth?”
- MP Rick Casson’s reaction in the House of Commons to a leaked official memo outlining Justice Minister Irwin Cotler’s position opposing C-313
Thank you to the thousands of you who wrote and called your MP on such short notice. Unfortunately, on Wednesday, September 28, the second reading vote on Bill C-313 was defeated in the House of Commons by a vote of 167 – 99. Had this bill become law, it would have raised the age of consent from 14 to 16 years of age and ensured that Canada’s children were further protected from predators.
Unfortunately, the vote results were not surprising considering that it was a whipped vote for the Liberals. To the credit of several Liberal MPs, a few of them broke ranks to vote in favour of the bill.
5) Justice Minister Cotler’s Reasons for Not Raising It
Justice Minister Cotler tried to spin the bill’s defeat in terms of not wanting to criminalize acts between teenagers, which he referred to as “puppy love.”
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20050928/C313_ageofconsentbill_20050928/20050928?hub=TopStories
The criminal Code already exempts from prosecution those closely related in age. Had Cotler felt that these exemptions were not sufficient, he could have added clarification at the committee stage.
Furthermore, Cotler explained that current laws offer sufficient protection and that the bill would do little to stop predators. This is surprising considering that the Canadian Police Association, child protection organizations, and all of Canada’s justice ministers support raising the age of consent because they believe it will further protect children from predators.
6) How Did Your MP Vote?
It was a free vote for the BLOC, Conservatives and NDP. All of the Conservative MPs voted in favour of raising the age of consent, except for Perth-Wellington, Ontario MP Gary Schellenberger. The entire BLOC voted AGAINST raising the age of consent, as did most of the NDP. However several NDP MPs, including party leader Jack Layton, supported the bill.
