It is a spiritual battle for life... – HHW
Another Side of the Battle Against Abortion – North America has experimented with Prohibition in its past. Would the introduction of Prohibition again with the banning of abortion be any more successful? – by Chris Walker
Few could argue that, politically, the abortion issue is the hot button topic of the last 30 years. More than any other ethical issue, it gets to the very matter of life itself. It is difficult to find someone, saved or not, who doesn’t feel passionately about it one way or the other. One side argues fiercely for a child’s right to live; the other argues just as fiercely that the government should mind its own business. The Church has fought very hard on the pro-life side, holding rallies, petitioning politicians, protesting clinics, educating people, and doing all that they can to get this practice outlawed. The abortion issue has been called a part of the so-called “culture war” in North America, with the battle lines clearly drawn between the opposing sides of the debate.
160 kegs were destroyed in Elk Lake, Ontario, 1925. Photo courtesy Wikipedia. At the turn of the 20 th century, there was another culture war in America. This time, the issue was alcohol. Alcohol and its consumption was the “abortion issue” of its time. Drunkenness was widespread and was leading to all kinds of reprehensible behaviour, and the church had had enough. The social movement for the complete prohibition of alcohol was led almost entirely by Christians. Preachers railed against it from the pulpit. Anti-alcohol groups and committees were formed. Rallies were held. Petitions were signed. Letters to the editor were written. Public debates were held. Protests occurred outside of bars. Politicians were forced to come down on one side or the other. There was a great division in society, between “wets” (who supported alcohol), and “drys” (who opposed it). Everyone was labelled one or the other; there was no middle ground.
It all sounds very familiar, doesn’t it?
On October 28, 1919, the United States government passed the Volstead Act, which made the production and sale of alcohol illegal. Almost immediately, speakeasies opened up in cities and towns across the nation. Trucks and boats began running booze in from Canada and Mexico. Small-time criminal gangs made their fortunes in the bootlegging industry, growing into massive and wealthy syndicates with incredible power. People snuck into secret bars, drinking to their heart’s content, just as they had before. Alcohol flowed just as freely in America as it had previously; it just did so illegally now.
After 14 years, the tide of public opinion had turned. As the Great Depression moved into full swing, the issue of prohibition seemed far less important. The law was officially repealed in 1933.
On every level, the Prohibition had been a failure. It failed to solve the moral issues surrounding alcohol. It didn’t turn peoples’ hearts away from sin, or toward Jesus. It didn’t stop people from drinking; it merely forced them to do so illegally. It created tens of thousands of new lawbreakers, and the criminal gangs who supplied them with alcohol prospered enormously, making millions from their labour. Theirs was a power and influence they had never before experienced. Eventually, the nation gave up on the failed experiment, and things went back exactly to the way they had been before.
Hopefully, we can learn some important lessons from these events, specifically, that man alone cannot solve the sin issue. Man alone cannot change the heart of a culture, and a change of law does not lead to a change of heart.
Why then do we look to our government for a solution? Many in the church act as though a change in the law is all we need to solve this problem, but history tells us otherwise. The government could outlaw abortion tomorrow, but the issue would not be resolved. The root of this problem goes deeper than a controversial clinical procedure, and involves issues more complicated than just obedience to a law. A change of heart in this nation is what we really need. Culture needs to be changed from the inside out, not the outside in.
Paul gave us a rallying cry: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” – (Ephesians 6:12).
He reminds us that the manifestation of evil may appear before our eyes in various forms in the natural, but the real source of evil is not natural, but supernatural. Since the Bible clearly tells us that our real struggle is supernatural, what do we accomplish by struggling so hard in the natural?
Petitions are not a bad thing, nor are rallies or letters. Making our voices heard is not wrong, but opinion polls reveal that Canadians are still overwhelmingly pro-choice in spite of these efforts. Instead, whatever energy we expend in the natural, we should match and surpass by taking up the Sword of the Spirit in prayer, worship, spiritual warfare, and declaration of God’s Word over our nation, and using it to tear down the spiritual strongholds that keep our nation in bondage.
Forcing people to submit to a law with which they disagree is not the solution for bringing about lasting change. The only true and permanent solution is in God. What if He were to grab a hold of the hearts of people and bring true change? What if abortion were to become distasteful again? It is not beyond Him. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; He directs it like a watercourse wherever He pleases.” Before we believed, we also were far from God at some point, but we are different now. Our hearts have changed! Why should hearts not change on this issue as well? Is the Lord’s arm too short?Surely we know that the abortion issue is close to God’s heart. He wants it dealt with even more than we do, but He tells us that our battle will not be won with human methods. “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” – (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).
Since God instructed us in this manner, He must have had reasons for doing so. If we aren’t to do battle using natural weapons alone, that’s perhaps why we have failed thus far. Let’s not forget that true authority lies not in political power, but in the authority of God’s Word wielded in prayer and declaration against the spiritual strongholds that hold our nation captive.
Let’s put our energy in the right place. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus and cry out on behalf of a culture that desperately needs Him.

This is a key moment in our History as a Movement. God Bless Monica Miller and Flip Benham for their work.
Dear Pro-life Friend:
The New York Times has broken its code of silence. It was only a matter of time in the media world; and now, the dike will slowly leak, crack, then inevitably crumble. The truth will be shown by one media outlet after another.
I tip my hat to whatever editor(s) had the integrity to send a photographer to take these photos, and then to show these photos on line, and in the paper. (Yes, it is 35 years late, but that is another matter for another day...)
And for those who do not understand the "media hierarchy," the NY Times is arguably the most powerful newspaper in the world. When they cover a story, it usually results in many stories from other sources following suit. They are the standard bearer.
And now, they have born this standard of photo-journalist integrity. Warning: The link below has graphic photos of babies murdered by abortion. I congratulate Monica Miller and Flip Benham for their part in this incredible story.
And by covering Jim Pouillon's murder and the upcoming protests at high schools nationwide on November 24, they have gone on the record that "the movement" has a martyr, and that we will not back down from our aggressive display of the truth.
Photo Story and Links to Aborted Babies.
The story about Jim's Pouillon's murder and upcoming actions is here.
If you want to join us and other Pro-lifers around the country on November 24, go to www.OverturnRoe.com and click on "Marching Orders" to learn how to hold your own event.
Finally, let us give thanks to God for the "irate, tireless minority, keen to set brush fires in the minds of men" who have been holding these signs for YEARS as a witness for the truth.
Keep us in prayer please.

Ignite our Culture 2009 Burlington Conference
Freedom and Family – Where Rights Meet Responsibilities – October 23th-24th, 2009Introduction
This year's Ignite Our Culture theme and speaker line-up is timely in view of recent developments on polygamy. In late September, polygamy charges against Bountiful leaders were dropped. The judge hearing the case objected to the B.C. Attorney-General looking for a 2nd special prosecutor to charge the men after the 1st special prosecutor he put on the case recommended against charges. The decision effectively quashes the charges. Politicians don't want to touch the issue, so they probably won't unless Canadians demand that they do so.The theme of our Ignite Our Culture conference this year is "Freedom and Family: Where Rights Meet Responsibilities," and one of our main speakers is Mary Mackert, a former wife of a polygamous man.
Freedom and Family are the two foundational realities of a civilized society and the two realities that are under the greatest threat today from state-ist and libertine forces.
A robust commitment to the family as the foundational social unit for society is necessary for cultivating and perpetuating self-government in the next generation. Self-government embraces the ethics of charity, industry, loyalty, human dignity, devotion, sacrifice, service, wealth creation and resourcefulness.
This kind of family is disappearing today. Because of this, the civil government is becoming more and more powerful, larger and larger.
The state always grows at the expense of liberty. Due to the growth in the State today, we are seeing new and dangerous threats to foundational freedoms that we have taken for granted for so many years: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, freedom of the press, etc.
Join us in Burlington on Oct. 23rd-24th, to learn how to stand up against this loss of family and freedom and how to take back this territory in the days ahead. John Carpay of the Canadian Constitution Foundation will be talking about the legal work CCF does with court cases that threaten to destroy our freedoms in Canada. You will hear from Michael Coren, a broadcaster, columnist and author who is on the front lines of this battle every day. And Mary Mackert, a former wife of a polygamist man, will talk about the importance of holding the line against the perverted, woman-exploiting practice of polygamy.

7. Good News 40 Days For Life Halifax – October 19, 2009
Good News
Last week, we got news that a young girl came to Halifax for an abortion. She is only 15 years old, and she was determined to end her pregnancy. Three women who are pregnant decided to pray for her, and when she got to Halifax, she changed her mind. I don't even have a first name to give you, and those are all the details I know as the person who told me said that she promised complete confidentiality to the person who told her.
This happened on the very day that we had the pro-choice young people who arrived with their signs and began shouting at passersby. I have heard from other vigil leaders, that when a baby is about to be saved, the devil gets mad and raises a ruckus. The lesson to be learned from this, do not be alarmed if you happen to witness a disturbance, it means that God is very close by.
Be not afraid. Praise God, and please pray for this young mother that she will have all the support that she needs to get through this pregnancy, that she will be well and healthy, that her baby will be loved, and that the birth of this baby will bring great joy to its mother, father and anyone else involved with this girl. Keep her lifted up to God, because it will be difficult but she will never regret the choice she made. Unlike abortion, where every woman experiences regret, or guilt, or depression, or all three.8. Greetings from LifeIssues.net
Dear Friends for Life,
Good News: Some E.U. members collaborating with the international pro-abortion lobby attempted to include a right to abortion in the declaration for the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in Geneva in July. Malta, Poland, and Ireland resisted the attempt and the final declaration contained no new pro-abortion language.
Tremendous News: The Dominican Republic Culture of Life is alive and strong. The Dominican Republic recently adopted a new pro-life constitution. While debating it, N. Kastberg, UNICEF Director of Latin America and the Caribbean, condemned the nation's high teen birthrate and called for legalized abortion. Refusing to cow-tow to UNICEF and the pro-abortion NGOs, their assembly voted 167 - 32 to approved a new charter. It declares, "The right to life is inviolable from conception to death." Another article defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

This is the same tactic that was used in Montana where the decision to uphold a judicial fiat that legalized assisted suicide is still pending a decision from the State Supreme Court. Once again the well-funded Compassion & Choices - euthanasia lobby are using their financial clout to hire a legal team to try and convince the courts in Connecticut that the people of that state have a right to assisted suicide. In Montana, information from polls was used to suggest that the people want assisted suicide legalized.

Greetings from LifeIssues.net
Dear Friends for Life,
World Congress of Families V: This international, interreligious, and interracial conference on family issues was held Aug. 10 - 12. One scheduled event was the screening of the "Demographic Bomb: Demography is Destiny." This is a follow up documentary to last year's highly successful "Demographic Winter: The Decline of the Human Family." (http://demographicwinter.com/index.html) The premise of these movies is that efforts to limit child bearing have worked all too well. Most nations today have birth rates under replacement level. As a result of millions of couples now deciding to have only one child, or none at all, these films show the potential major negative consequences for a national economy.
Russian population continues to decrease as outside workers increase. Prime Minister Putin has called this, "the most acute problem facing our country today," saying that "the population has been falling by 700,000 people annually." Particularly in the large cities, Russian population is being replaced by foreigners. Detailing this, the government states that in Moscow the number of Koreans has increased 2.3 times; Armenians and Georgians, 2.8 times; Arabs, 12.2 times; Azerbaijanis, 4.6 times; Moldavians, 5.2 times; Ingush, 5.9 times; Chechens, 6.9 times; Kijiks, 12.2 times; Vietnamese, 14 times; and Chinese, 35 times. Symbolic of the many Islamic immigrants, plans are afoot to erect a giant Islamic center in Moscow with minarets higher than Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
Singapore – Low Birth Rate: Singapore's population is 4.8 million and it hopes to increase that number to 6.5 million. This may be very optimistic, as there are now 12,000 abortions every year, compared to approximately 40,000 births with the birth rate being below replacement level.
God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI(Sharing) "The way to begin the healing of the wounds of the world is to treasure the infant Christ in us; to be not the castle but the cradle of Christ, and in rocking that cradle to the rhythm of love, to swing the whole world back into the beat of the music of eternal life." – Caryll Houselander

As many remember the tumbling of Communist regimes in countries such as Poland, East Germany, and Hungary, others will recall Marxism's terrible legacy: millions of dead and tortured, "reeducation" and labor camps, show-trials, unparalleled economic destruction, and the worst environmental devastation in history. As the recently deceased ex-Marxist philosopher Leszek Kolakowski concluded in his magisterial multi-volume Main Currents of Marxism, this was not accidental. It was Marxist philosophy's logical outcome. By definition, no political program built upon an explicitly materialist viewpoint can consider itself limited by the idea of an innate human dignity, or anything suggesting a more-than-flesh-and-blood dimension to human life.
This is one reason why Marxist regimes are invariably hostile to religious belief.

Item #9. 96,000 Women Have Abortions Over Medicine
Many pregnant women make the hasty decision to have an abortion because of medication they were taking when they became pregnant. The practice is often based on unfounded fears that the medicine could lead to fetal deformities, says Dr. Kim Tae-yoon, head of the gynecological department of Miz Medi Hospital. "Though doctors assure them that most of the drugs are okay and recommend them to keep the baby, they just ask for the procedure," he said. Kim's remarks came in response to the Korea Food and Drug Administration's report that about 96,000 women, 10 percent of pregnant women, were having abortions for drug-related reasons each year.View entire text at The Korea Times

10. LifeSite News Sampler – October 16, 200911. Men Plead Guilty In Chilling Murder Of Pregnant Winnipeg Woman – October 9, 2009
Canadian Physicians for Life: info@physiciansforlife.ca
Friday, October 09, 2009 8:19 AM"The death of Fernando's unborn baby didn't result in an additional murder charge because Canadian law, unlike the law in the United States and other countries, doesn't recognize a fetus as a living being."
Men plead guilty in chilling murder of pregnant Winnipeg woman
Mike McIntyre, Winnipeg Free Press: Thursday, October 8, 2009
WINNIPEG – Two men have admitted to their roles in the planned slaying of a young woman and her unborn child – a case described by justice officials as one of the most chilling murders in recent Winnipeg memory.
Nathanael Mark Plourde took the unusual step of pleading guilty to first-degree murder just as a high-profile jury trial was set to begin Thursday afternoon. His co-accused, Jose Manuel Toruno, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Both men face mandatory life prison terms when they are sentenced Friday morning. Plourde, 21, must wait at least 25 years before applying for parole, while Toruno, 21, must serve at least a decade behind bars. The Crown can seek to have his eligibility raised to as much as 25 years.
Plourde's lawyer, Roberta Campbell, said his desire to plead guilty to the most serious charge in the Criminal Code with absolutely no personal benefit is a true sign of remorse.
"He didn't want to put the victim's family through any more of an ordeal," she said outside court.
Roxanne Fernando, 24, was lured to a violent death in February 2007, only weeks after discovering she was pregnant with Plourde's child.Crown attorney Mark Kantor told court Thursday that Fernando wanted to have a long-term relationship with Plourde, whom she met while working at McDonald's in Winnipeg. Plourde didn't return the feelings and hatched a plot to kill her when she refused to leave him alone.
A 17-year-old co-accused pleaded guilty to first-degree last year and was given the maximum youth sentence – six years of prison and four years of probation – for what was described in court as a "callous, well-planned execution." The Crown agreed not to try to raise him to adult court, meaning his name can't be published.
During the youth's sentencing, Crown attorney Brent Davidson told court Plourde pressured her to have an abortion. Fernando initially agreed to terminate her pregnancy but later had a "change of heart," setting in motion a chilling chain of events, he said.
"It would be the fetus that would drive the planned and deliberate killing of Ms. Fernando," said Davidson.
Campbell disputed those facts on Thursday and said the pregnancy wasn't the motive for the killing.
Plourde offered the youth $500 and a 32-inch television to carry out the act. He initially refused, but began participating in the sinister plot, court was told.A meeting was set up for Feb. 15 – the day after Valentine's Day – at which Fernando had expected to exchange gifts with Plourde. She wrapped up a box of chocolates and got into a waiting car, unaware that the youth was hiding under a blanket in the back seat. He had also participated in an earlier trip to the store to buy supplies which included leather gloves and rolls of tape.
Fernando – told that there would be a "surprise" waiting for her – was driven to Little Mountain Park on the northwestern edge of the city.
The youth burst out from under the blanket and began beating Fernando at the isolated park, along with Plourde. Fernando was hit with a wrench up to 20 times, bound with tape and wrapped in a blanket before being stuffed in the trunk of the car.
They thought she was dead. But as the car began driving away, sounds could be heard coming from the rear.
Panic set in and a third accused – Toruno – was picked up and paid $120 to assist in Fernando's killing. The money had been taken out of Fernando's purse by the youth as she lay dying in the trunk, court was told.
Fernando was taken to a remote area in northwest Winnipeg and repeatedly beaten with a broken hockey stick until she was clearly dead. Her body was then buried in a snow-filled ditch.
Fernando's killers went to McDonald's for a bite to eat, stopped at a grocery store for some cleaning supplies for the vehicle and then text-messaged at least one of Fernando's friends – using her cell phone – indicating all was well.
Fernando's friends and family members launched a desperate search that included distributing missing persons' posters and peppering the Internet with her photo and police contact information by sending out e-mail alerts to hundreds of people asking for assistance.
Her body was discovered several days later.
The death of Fernando's unborn baby didn't result in an additional murder charge because Canadian law, unlike the law in the United States and other countries, doesn't recognize a fetus as a living being.
Fernando and her family had come to Canada from the Philippines in 2003. She had been working as a banquet server at the downtown Radisson Hotel.

12. New Book By Mark Penninga About Human Dignity – October 19, 2009
Today in the House of Commons our MP's debated legislation that, if passed, will legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide. The bill is officially labelled "right to die with dignity."
I have written a new book that examines the philosophical, moral, and religious foundations beneath the rhetoric that is often associated with dignity. It is called "Building on Sand: Human Dignity in Canadian Law and Society." Published by Premier Publishing in Winnipeg, this book attempts to help Canadian society understand the dangers of our treatment of human life in law. It looks specifically at the Supreme Court decisions relating to human dignity and addresses abortion, assisted suicide, and equality rights, among other things.
After exploring our Court's treatment of human dignity, I take a brief journey back through Western philosophy and examine the secular foundations for the Court's decisions. This analysis reveals that the secular understandings of what gives humanity worth all leave much to be desired. After exploring their weaknesses, I turn to a Christian account of human dignity and explain how it addresses many of these shortcomings and is at the same time genuinely human (unlike the secular accounts). In the final chapter, this book responds to the common challenge that a Christian perspective should have no place in Canadian law or politics. [Click here for the table of contents.]
I'm convinced that the issues presented in this book are both important and timely. The debate over euthanasia is only one example. Our society is struggling and needs to hear the good news that comes with understanding who we are and why we have a dignity that isn't subjective or based on our capacities.
Given that this is my first attempt at a book, and given the academic tone throughout it, I'm not claiming that it is going to be the easiest or most stimulating read. But I do believe that it will be a good resource for you, your family, your church, or school to better understand the hurtful direction that our society is going and why the Christian account of human dignity offers a much better alternative. This book is based on research that I did for a master's degree at a secular university so it should be helpful for anyone who is trying to show the intelligibility of our faith-based perspective to a secular audience.
Orders for the book can be made at www.ARPACanada.ca.
All proceeds will be donated to ARPA Canada. The price is also by donation so you can pay based on what you are able or what you think is appropriate.
Books may be available at future ARPA Canada events (Smithers and Cloverdale are the next two locations) or through local ARPA's. For bulk orders, please contact ARPA Canada (info@arpacanada.ca).
Thank you for your interest. – Mark Penninga13. Somerville; An Answer To Quebec's New Adoption Proposal – October 13, 2009
A simple answer to Quebec's simple adoption question
Should biology play a role in defining a child's family? Yes, says Margaret SomervilleMargaret Somerville – Special to Globe and Mail Update Published on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009
Does each of us have a right to know, where possible, through whom life travelled down the generations to us? Do other individuals and society have obligations not to intentionally make it impossible for us to know? Do adopted children have a right to maintain ties with their biological families, unless that is contrary to the “best interests” of a particular child? These and many other questions about children's rights are raised in a recent opinion piece by my colleague Robert Leckey in The Globe and Mail.
First, the illustration accompanying Prof. Leckey's article in the newspaper version of this piece merits noting. It shows two adults and a child, each emblazoned with a heart symbol. This visually sums up Prof. Leckey's definition of a family. This view holds that children's only essential need from a family structure is love – love defines a family, and it doesn't matter who provides that love. It could be the child's own biological parents, an unrelated adoptive opposite-sex couple, a same-sex couple, a single person or some other family configuration.
Let me be clear: Love is essential for children's well-being. But is it sufficient, or should biology still play a role in defining a family and children's rights regarding that family? Should what constitutes a family be simply a matter of adults' personal preferences, with biological bonds having no necessary role?
The impact of legalizing same-sex marriage is relevant here. The 2005 Civil Marriage Act redefined parenthood from biological or natural parenthood to legal (and social) parenthood – that is to say, legal bonds replaced biological bonds as the basis of the family. In short, Canada changed from a biologically based family structure to a “personal preferences” model.
France took a different path. Relying on an extensive report, the French government rejected legalizing same-sex marriage, choosing instead the pacte civil, the civil union, expressly because same-sex marriage would give priority to adults' rights to create “diverse” families, as Prof. Leckey terms them. The government decided this was not in children's best interests. Civil unions do not have this effect, because they carry no right to found a family.
The draft bill tabled last week in Quebec deals with both open and simple adoptions.
Open adoptions, which can allow adopted children to know the identity of their biological parents, are now the norm in countries like Canada.
Simple adoptions are a more novel idea. A child receives a new adoptive parent or parents, who assume the primary responsibility for care. But they also preserve the legal bond connecting the child to birth parents and birth family.
Prof. Leckey describes simple adoptions as a “troubling proposal” and criticizes Quebec for following France in proposing them. He objects to using France as a model because in France, the family remains defined in the traditional configuration and the simple adoption promotes a “conservative view” of family.
Simple adoption “risks undermining the idea of adoption,” he writes. “Since the first adoption law 90 years ago, adoption has created new bonds of filiation or legal parentage. It gives the child a new identity. …Quebec's current law views the children of interracial adoption and of adoption by same-sex couples as equal to any other children. It assumes that their adoptive families give such children a wholly valid identity.”
The reality is, however, that while adoption law can give the child a new legal identity, it can't give the child – or their descendants – a new biological or genetic identity. This information is important to most people if they are to feel they have a wholly valid identity. As one person born from anonymous sperm donation once said, “it's the only bond you can't annul.”
Moreover, for many adopted people, or those born through sperm or ova donation, simply obtaining information about their genetic identity isn't enough. Many want to have contact with their biological parents and, frequently, their wider biological family.
It's clear Prof. Leckey objects to Quebec's draft bill because it recognizes that genetic bonds matter in defining a family, and his main goal is to wipe out that notion. But is that a good idea?
To respond, we should ask first, what is likely best for adopted children, and only then, what adoptive parents might prefer in terms of the role that genetic ties play. In short, we should see the goal of adoption first as giving a child a family, and only second, as giving adults a child.
By focusing on the genetic tie, Prof. Leckey says, simple adoption implies that adoptive parents are “second best.” Rather, I'd suggest it recognizes that adoptive parents are “different” from genetic parents. And it gives priority to children's rights with respect to their biological parentage – it actually remedies treating adopted children as “second best,” in comparison with those who know their biological parents.
Prof. Leckey also objects to simple adoption because it “suggests that …filiation and family belonging are matters of blood.” Well, for millennia they have been, although exceptions have always been needed – as in adoption. The issue is how much blood should count now.
The ethical requirement that we do the least harm possible when intervening with others, especially those unable to consent for themselves, indicates that the primary presumption should be that children have a right to know and be in contact with their biological parents, even when it's in their best interests not to be reared by those parents.
Prof. Leckey is concerned that simple adoption “shores up the importance of genetic connection over bonds of adoption.” I'd suggest it recognizes that both genetic and adoptive bonds are important and rebalances the weight given to each, as it should be.
In choosing between, on one hand, treating adoptive and natural parents equally, and on the other, treating adopted and natural children as equally as possible, we should choose the latter. Making simple adoption available favours the latter.

Florida Sheriff Proves Child Porn Can Be Curbed – by Kim Trobee, Editor
Sheriff Grady Judd has taken on the task of ridding his jurisdiction of child pornography. Polk County, Fla., Sheriff Grady Judd started his career in law enforcement in 1972. In 2004 he was elected sheriff and since then has taken on the task of ridding his jurisdiction of child pornography. While the work is difficult, Judd said, “protecting children from sexual exploitation far outweighs the challenges faced each day doing the job.”
1. You’ve arrested nearly 200 people on child porn charges since 2006. Are there really that many bad people in Polk County or is there another reason for your high numbers?
Yes, I’m afraid there are that many people involved in collecting child pornography locally; and there are more — we are working hard to find them. While 200 suspects may sound like a high number, per capita, Polk County is no different than any other county in Florida, or the nation for that matter. The Internet, for all its value, has enabled more people to have easier access to these kinds of vile, debasing materials. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has focused its attention on these crimes because of the danger pedophiles represent to our children. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Computer Crimes unit has more than doubled in size in recent years, and we are on the leading edge in expertise, training and technology to protect children from Internet-facilitated exploitation. With a similar dedication to curtailing the growing epidemic of child pornography, or the victimization of children in general, any other law-enforcement agency could produce comparable results.
An example I like to use to illustrate this point is related to enforcement of illegal narcotics laws: If an agency ignores a drug problem in the community, it will make few arrests, making it appear as if there is not a significant drug problem (small number of arrests = small problem?). But in reality, a higher number of drug arrests likely indicate that an agency takes the local illegal drug problem seriously, and it is willing to take assertive action against drug dealers. The same is true regarding child pornography.
2. Your office is the hub of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. What are you doing to identify and arrest people illegally obtaining child porn online?
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has four full-time detectives and three full-time forensic specialists in the Computer Crimes Unit. These detectives and forensic specialists work diligently to locate people residing within Polk County who download and/or share child pornography online. We also actively share training and information with other agencies regarding these investigations. Through specialized techniques and technologies, our detectives are able to locate the residence where the child pornography is being downloaded. We do not discuss the specific methods we are using so that the suspects do not develop ways to avoid detection.
3. Why is it so difficult for many law-enforcement agencies to pursue these crimes?
Online investigations are time consuming, and they require hours of training, specialized tools and equipment. These investigations require a commitment from law-enforcement leadership. They also require a strong and committed prosecutor who is trained in these types of offenses. We are very fortunate to have the complete support of 10th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Jerry Hill and Assistant State Attorney Brad Copley. Both are outstanding, dedicated and experienced prosecutors.4. Can people help in the fight against child pornography?
Citizens are most helpful when they report suspicious activity such as an unfamiliar person taking photos of children near playgrounds, schools, bus stops or any other place where children are likely to gather. Parents also need to take an active role in monitoring their child’s online activity and phone history. Internet predators tend to target children who spend a significant amount of time online.Ultimately, child pornography and other crimes against children are difficult to prevent and investigate. Sadly, a child is most likely to be victimized by a relative, neighbor or someone else they know. Most child pornography is created by people close to the victim. Therefore, parents and guardians must take an active role in their children’s lives — they must know where their children are and with whom. Children must be educated about “good-touch” and “bad-touch,” and they should be taught that it is OK to tell their parents, teachers, and friends if they are inappropriately touched by anyone — a friend, relative or adult. Churches, too, can work with parents and children to present age-appropriate and values-appropriate education for our children. Responsible adults and educated children are the first defense, not law enforcement.
5. What’s at the heart of your mission to protect the children of Polk County?
I know this sounds hackneyed, but children really are our most precious resource — they represent the future of our civilized society. Our most solemn responsibility is to protect our children. Through education and enforcement, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is working to make Polk County as safe as possible for children. By consistently arresting those who prey on our children, Polk County has become known for its zero-tolerance approach to predators. Child-pornography and child-predator investigations help us to identify and arrest those who are, by definition, predisposed to exploit or harm our children, thereby preventing them from physically abusing a child. Our goal is to wipe out child pornography from Polk County. While our deputies are limited to the 2,000 square miles of Polk County, we are working together with other agencies to provide them with the training, equipment and the leads necessary to perform these investigations within their jurisdictions. This is only possible with the assistance of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program and support from other law-enforcement partners, such as the Florida Attorney General’s Office. Working together, we can significantly reduce the proliferation of child pornography.

The labourers are getting tired and need help. Can you help? Please think about it and call or e-mail Ellen. The results of the 40 day vigils are intangible in some cases but there have been many good results with lots of babies being saved. In Halifax hearts are turning to the culture of life, even if only one at a time.
At the Marian Gathering this weekend folks from out of town went to visit the site and stayed and prayed on Friday and Sunday. One gentleman has organized a 24-hour prayer vigil this week in New Minas in support of those on the front line at the VGH. What a beautiful gift of support. Please help if you can.

Greetings!
Hello everyone. This is an extremely brief letter, I promise more tomorrow when I get rested.
Tonight's email is just a simple urgent plea.
Everyone knows that we have gaps in the vigil schedule. But perhaps you don't realize that we fill those gaps, even when no one is scheduled to be there. Which means that Ellen and Pauline come in from Fall River and give two hours minimum each day at the vigil site. And since I live the closest, I am there most days for 3-4 hours.
But some days, it ends up more. Such as today. I don't mind as long as I know that I have certain time periods to fill. I am prepared to stay for two hours, and I will dress appropriately. However, when the second hour becomes three that gets really tough. Like today.
The reason, someone didn't show up. So I stayed in order not to leave someone alone.
So today, I was there from 7 am to 9 am and I am used to that. That is my time slot most days. I also knew I was to be there from 3 - 5 pm because there was only one person scheduled at each hour.
Here is the snag. At 3 pm, several people dropped in without letting us know. So there was no need for me to be there if they had told me. Same thing at 4 pm, more drop-ins and there is no point in my going home since I had a premonition that I would actually be needed at 5 pm.So, here is the point.
If you plan on dropping in, please let myself or Ellen know in advance. That way, we can adjust the schedule so that it isn't necessary for me to remain there for a total of 5 hours in one day.
I only say this because I am getting bone tired and there is still 10 days to go. With 4-5 hours each day.
Please, please let us know if you are going to come without being on the schedule, it is the kind thing to do.You can phone me on my cell and let me know, even one hour ahead - that is all that is required.
292-8225 please call.Okay, vigil hours that do need help
Thursday (that is tomorrow)
8 am - 9 am - we need one extra person
4 pm - 5 pm - one extra person needed
5 pm - 6 pm - two people needed (there is no one there)Friday
8 am - 9 am - one person needed
9 am - 10 am - one person needed
3 pm - 4 pm - one person needed
6 pm - 7 pm - one person neededPlease help us out; this is the next to last week. Let's hear from someone who hasn't come out yet - "can you not wait with me one hour?"
