1. Canada’s Health Care System Heading For ‘Demographic Blowout’ – November 14, 2008

Canada’s Health Care System heading for “Demographic Blowout” with Aging Population: Study - By Hilary White

OTTAWA, November 14, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new study has revealed that the Canadian government will spend $171.9-billion this year on health care, or $5,170 per person. At this rate “health care spending is expected to grow faster than Canada’s economy, outpacing inflation and population growth,” according to Glenda Yeates, President and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), which released the study yesterday.

Demographers have warned that the aging and slow growth of the Canadian population is a direct threat to the long-term prognosis of its raft of expensive, publicly funded social services, including its health care system.

Brian Day, past president of the Canadian Medical Association, told the Globe and Mail that with the Baby Boom generation growing older, the system is headed for a “demographic blowout.”

The CIHI study found that government expenditure on health will reach 10.7 per cent of the country's gross domestic product. Yeates said the study’s results are “going to raise questions for Canada and other countries as to how much do we really want to spend on health care.” The organization's findings may prove especially significant and timely given US president-elect Barack Obama's stated plans to move the US towards socialized healthcare.

At the same time that the Canadian government is paying record sums to keep its socialized medical services afloat, which includes government-funded abortion-on-demand, the population of Canada continues to age and its birth rate remains one of the lowest in the western world.

The median age for women in Canada is 41.2 years, over the age at which women easily conceive children. Recently the total fertility rate has risen only slightly to 1.57 children born per woman. To maintain a steady population, however, a country must have 2.1 children born per woman.

Despite massive immigration, Canada’s population, currently 33,399,600, has grown by only 276,780 since last year. With most new residents being adults, the problem of the aging of the population is not addressed by the government’s open-door policy, aimed at bringing workers into the country. The average Canadian life expectancy is 81.16 years. Combined, these statistics paint a grim picture of the future of Canada’s health services, with fewer and fewer young people to pay for the health care of a rapidly aging population.

The 2006 census showed that the country’s population is aging at an alarming rate. The report from Statistics Canada said that the number of people over age 64 has increased by 11.5 per cent in the last 5 years. Of the total 32,973,546 Canadians, "the number of people aged 55 to 64, many of whom are workers approaching retirement, has never been so high in Canada, at close to 3.7 million in 2006."

Meanwhile, Canada continues to be one of the most abortion-friendly countries in the world, with a total of 96,815 abortions committed in 2005, equalling 28.3 abortions for every 100 live births.

2. Conservative Party Votes ‘Overwhelmingly’ To Repeal Hate Speech Law – November 14, 2008

By Ezra Levant

Go here for the complete article:
http://www.christiangovernment.ca/12all/lt/t_go.php?i=344&e=MjYxNg==&l=-http--ezralevant.com/2008/11/conservative-party-votes-overw.html

According to reports from the Conservative Party's convention in Winnipeg, Resolution P-203 – repealing section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, the "hate speech" provision - passed "overwhelmingly". The vote was in a policy plenary session. My understanding is that a number of the resolutions passed in the policy plenary go on to the general convention floor for a further vote. Based on what I'm hearing, I suspect that P-203 would be handily supported in that broader forum, too, if it makes the short list of resolutions.

But it doesn't matter whether P-203 makes it to the second vote, because the message is already clear: the party's grass-tops activists – the people who knock on doors, raise funds, lead the local campaigns, etc. – support freedom of speech and thought, and now see the Canadian Human Rights Commission for what it is: a violator of rights, not a protector of them.

I'm delighted.

If P-203 goes on to a second vote on Saturday, great. But the victory is already achieved: the Conservative Party made the abusive "hate speech" provision a political issue, and voted to repeal it. That's great.

Finally, a Religious Leader with Guts – by Mike Gallagher

I want you to meet a priest from Greenville, South Carolina named Rev. Jay Scott Newman.

He is the pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Greenville.

And he has become my personal hero.

In a nutshell, Fr. Newman told his parishioners that if they voted for Barack Obama, they embraced “intrinsic evil” since Obama's opponent was a “plausible pro-life alternative.” And as a result, those Obama voters need to seek forgiveness from God before they receive Holy Communion again.

4. For Pro-Lifers, A New Day – November 11, 2008

By John Jay Hughes

Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 7:36 AM

The worst aspect of an Obama presidency, I have been telling friends for months, will be his Supreme Court appointments. They will set the so-called constitutional right to an abortion in concrete for years to come. While this remains true, Sen. Obama’s victory challenges pro-lifers in two ways.

We need first to recognize that politics is the art of the possible and that political battles can never be won by attacking our friends. During the annual march on Washington each January, some pro-lifers have had nothing better to do than to stage confrontations with pro-life members of Congress whose support they consider insufficiently militant. I received such an attack myself, during a previous presidential campaign, when a listener found the decibel count of a strong pro-life homily I preached too low. This is madness.

5. Friday Fax - Volume 11, Number 48 – November 13, 2008

Dear Colleague,

We report today on some good news and bad. The good news is that El Salvador has declined to sign a treaty that critics charge promotes radical social policy.

We also report on a new document from International Planned Parenthood Federation that says governments are obligated to guarantee something called "sexual rights."

Spread the word.

Yours sincerely,

El Salvador Rejects Anti-Family, Pro-Abortion Youth Convention

By Piero A. Tozzi and Neydy Casillas Padrón

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) The President of El Salvador, Elias Antonio Saca, affirmed at an Ibero-American leaders' summit late last month that his country would not sign the Ibero-American Convention on the Rights of Youth (ICRY), as it violated El Salvador's Constitution. His decision cheered Latin American social conservatives who have been wary of articles in the Convention that they say promote homosexuality and abortion.

The ICRY is backed by Spain's socialist president, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and has the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Proponents tout the treaty as enhancing the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Critics focus on provisions like Article 25, which labels "sexual and reproductive health" a "right" and calls for "confidentiality" with respect to this right. "Sexual and reproductive health" is used by United Nations (UN) committees and UN agencies to promote abortion. They also point out that Article 23 mandates a "right to sexual education" that includes "full acceptance" of the youth's "identity," a term another article defines as including "sexual orientation." Given that the ICRY encompasses minors within the scope of "youth," critics view the Convention as undermining parental rights and the family unit.

While President Saca's constitutional objections concern provisions of the Convention that would allow youths to evade military service and forbid capital punishment of adults under the age of 24, the Salvadorian Constitution also states that the family is the fundamental base of society and entitled to protection by the State, language similar to that used in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Although El Salvador rejected the ICRY, the nations participating in the 18th Annual Iberoamerican Summit also issued a non-binding "Declaration of San Salvador" and a corresponding Program of Action that critics find ambiguous and therefore troubling. The Declaration calls for education in "sexual and reproductive health," and, though it does not mention "sexual orientation," calls for an open-ended "Ibero-American Year Against All Forms of Discrimination."

Critics also point out that neither the Declaration nor the Program of Action were circulated publicly in draft form prior to their release, despite calls that governments do so to allow for greater citizen input. Julia Cardenal, a Salvadorian pro-life and pro-family activist, asked if the summit documents were "such a good thing for youth, why was everything done so secretly?" While she credits the Declaration for stating that sexual education should be conducted in conformity with the "moral values and internal legislation of each country," she told the Friday Fax that the Declaration would have been stronger had such language been incorporated elsewhere in the document as well.

The ICRY went into effect in March of this year, when Costa Rica became the fifth country to ratify it. In addition to El Salvador, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia have refused to sign the ICRY, and Peru's legislature debated and rejected ratification. Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua have also balked at ratifying the Convention.

New IPPF Document Tells States to Guarantee Sweeping "Sexual Rights"

By Samantha Singson

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) has issued a new document that declares that governments are obligated to guarantee a sweeping definition of "sexual rights," including abortion, "sexual freedom" and "comprehensive sexuality education," as an integral component of human rights.

The IPPF declaration defines sexual rights as "an evolving concept that encompasses sexual activity, gender identities, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction." IPPF differentiates "sexual rights" from "reproductive rights," a term that it equates with abortion, specifying that "sexual rights encompass more than entitlements related to health" and that "many expressions of sexuality are non-reproductive."

The IPPF declaration is broken down into a series of ten articles, each of which lists a series of demands. Under the article on the "right to life, liberty and security of the person and bodily integrity," IPPF includes a right to abortion, stipulating that "no woman shall be condemned to forced maternity as a result of having exercised her sexuality" and that all women have a right to the safe abortion services "independently of the objection of health service providers" – in other words, gutting conscientious objector rights.

Other articles include a host of other stipulations, including demands for all persons in custody "to have regular conjugal visits," all individuals to have their self-defined gender identity reflected on government documents "including but not limited to birth certificates and passports," and "the right to explore their sexuality and fantasies free from fear, shame, guilt, false beliefs and other impediments to the free expression of their desires."

The IPPF declaration concludes its list of demands with an article on the "right to accountability and redress." IPPF insists that states establish accountability mechanisms to ensure that "sexual rights" are "fully upheld." According to IPPF, this includes "the ability to monitor the implementation of sexual rights and to access remedies for violations of sexual rights, including access to full redress through restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction, guarantee of non-repetition."

The declaration links "sexual rights" to long-established human rights, such as the rights to life, equality, non-discrimination, privacy, freedom of thought, education, and to marry and found a family. IPPF asserts that states have a legal obligation to "respect, protect and fulfill sexual rights" and that governments are required "to adopt appropriate legislative, administrative, budgetary, judicial, promotional and other measures toward the full realization of the right."

The term "sexual rights" has never been included in any binding United Nations (UN) document. Proponents tried to get it included in the Platform for Action of the Beijing Women's Conference (1995) but 65 governments objected and it was removed. It was tried again at the Hague Forum leading into the five-year review of the Cairo Conference and was rejected there, too. No matter what governments decide, however, advocates of radical social policy ignore them. For instance, UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid uses the term regularly in her public speeches.

IPPF has already declared that it will do everything it can to safeguard "sexual rights" at future UN conferences. IPPF president Jacqueline Sharpe stated that "the Declaration will enable members of the sexual and reproductive health and human rights communities to create change and build on the momentum that has already begun around sexual rights in preparation for the next International Conference on Population and Development in 2015."

6. Halifax Group Brings First Ever Canadian 40 Days For Life Campaign To Close – November 14, 2008

By John Jalsevac

HALIFAX, N.S., November 14, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This year Halifax was one of the two Canadian cities to participate in the the wildly successful 40 Days for Life campaign – the North American-wide pro-life effort that saw nearly 450 unborn babies saved from abortion, and tens of thousands of pro-life volunteers take to the streets in an unprecedented show of grassroots strength (For more coverage on the Ottawa campaign, see: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/nov/08110407.html). This was the first year that Canadian cities had participated.

Plans to organize the 40 Days for Life Halifax campaign, which took place from September 24 to November 2, began this past July after the news broke of Morgentaler’s nomination for the Order of Canada. Galvanized by the news, organizers contacted 45 Catholic churches and 85 Protestant churches seeking support and volunteers to help bring the 40 Days campaign to Canada.

While one of the goals of 40 Days for Life is to stage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week prayer vigils outside local abortion centers, Halifax organizers had difficulty in getting the nighttime hours filled. Instead the team decided to focus on filling daytime hours between 6 am and 9 pm.

With 150 volunteers, the Halifax campaign managed to cover a total of 600 hours of prayerful vigil. Organizer Julie Culshaw credited this achievement to “a handful of those participants were willing to commit an extraordinary amount of time to prayer at the vigil site, some putting in as much as three to four hours per day.” With the campaign coinciding with the change in season, many of the devoted 40 Days participants had to brave inclement weather and plunging temperatures for hours at a time.

While there are no facilities devoted solely to killing unborn children in Halifax, abortions are still committed in the cities’ hospitals, with the majority occurring at the Victoria General Hospital. According to statistics 1700 such killings were committed in 2007, with approximately 70 late term abortions committed at the IWK Children’s Hospital. The late-term abortions committed at the Children’s Hospital are largely done on unborn babies found to have disabilities or Down’s syndrome.

The 40 Days Halifax vigil was held on the public sidewalk on South Park Street, outside the Victoria General Hospital, next to the entrance of the main parking lot.  The vigil, while significantly removed from the building itself, was well situated to be noticed by pedestrians walking by, visitors to the hospital, and hospital staff who drove in to park.

Culshaw said that, due to the fact that the vigil took place outside a large hospital, it was difficult to gauge what impact the campaign had on women seeking abortions. Nevertheless, she said, “we feel that our witness during this vigil was to the public, raising awareness that their place of health care operates a ward to terminate innocent lives, and does this in great numbers.”

Last week the Halifax group concluded their campaign with a banquet at which Shawn Carney, one of the original four organizers for 40 Days for Life, gave an inspiring talk.  The banquet was attended by over 160 people, many of whom say they are prepared to participate in future 40 Days for Life campaigns.

As has happened with many other campaigns across the continent, participants in the Halifax initiative have found that they are disinclined to give up their pro-life efforts entirely, now that the official campaign has come to a close. “We are going to maintain a weekly presence at the hospital on Wednesday mornings,” said Culshaw, “beginning with a Rosary walk with Father Joe Hattie, our resident Priest for Life here, and then we will remain in prayer until noontime.  All are welcome to join us as we continue to pray for an end to abortion.”

7. Heavy Hand Of The CRTC – It Is Time For Action – November 7, 2008

The Heavy Hand of the CRTC: It is Time For Action - reported ARPA

http://www.arpacanada.ca/

Friday, 07 November 2008 10:28

According to the Canadian Press, "The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has ruled that Shaw Cable has not been marketing its gay-and-lesbian TV service nearly as well as do other cable systems. The broadcast regulator says, as a result of being subjected to "undue disadvantage," OUTtv was not getting nearly the audience on Shaw that it was getting elsewhere." [Read the whole story here.]

Apparently the CRTC thinks it has to make sure that private companies are doing a good job in marketing, at least when it comes to promoting homosexuality. This is but one of many examples of the CRTC inquisition in this country. It hands out licenses to porn channels but refuses them to religious programming. After all, we all know how destructive religious programming is to Canadian culture. And it has now decided that it is time to start policing the internet as well. "Watch out ARPACanada.ca, you aren't promoting enough content that is in line with our 'Canadian values.' It's time to shut it down."

Action Item: The CRTC has to report to Parliament. In particular, it reports to Minister of Canadian Heritage, James Moore. Write an email to your MP and CC James Moore. Let them know that it is time that the CRTC was reigned in, or even rid of completely.

8. How The U.S. Government Is Covering Up HPV Vaccine Side Effects – November 16, 2008

To see videos click here

http://www.businesswire.com/flash/flvplayer.swfby Barbara Loe Fisher

On October 21, 2008 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in association with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued a report on Gardasil vaccine safety amounts to a cover-up of serious reactions, including paralysis and deaths, that have been reported to the government's Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS).

On October 24, 2008, the National Vaccine Information Center issued a press release that calls on the CDC and FDA to release to the public the study design, data and names of principal investigators involved in the report maintaining that Gardasil vaccine is safe no serious side effects. NVIC will also be calling on the newly elected President and members of Congress to remove the nation's vaccine safety monitoring system from DHHS and place it in a separate entity reporting directly to Congress.

Sadly, U.S. government officials have learned nothing in the past 26 years from parents asking for investigation of vaccination side effects and identification of individuals at higher risk for having vaccine reactions so their lives can be spared.

Now, a callous disregard for human life, which has been tragically demonstrated for decades, is once again illustrated in this latest refusal to properly evaluate the risks of the newly licensed Gardasil vaccine. Why should anyone have confidence in government and drug company officials who do not bother to scientifically investigate the biological mechanisms contributing to serious reactions, injuries and deaths and why some individuals may be more vulnerable than others for suffering Gardasil reactions?

Conflicts of interest are rampant in a mass vaccination infrastructure that has the same people, who are regulating and promoting vaccines, also evaluating vaccine safety. This kind of conflict of interest cannot be tolerated. The people – and only the people being told and often forced to buy and use vaccines – can reform the system by getting involved in the democratic process and appealing to their elected officials and demanding change. Because 26 years is long enough to wait for those in government responsible for ensuring vaccine safety to do the right thing.

At the end of the day, the only way we can have the ability to place economic and political pressure on the public health system to change is to have the right to make informed, voluntary decisions about which vaccines we and our children use.

The right to informed consent to vaccination or any medical intervention, which carries a risk of injury or death, is a human right. Anything less, as we can see from the latest whitewash of Gardasil vaccine risks by government health officials we are supposed to trust, is a threat to both individual and public health.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Over 10,000 adverse reactions, including 27 deaths, have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System in relation to Gardasil. Yet, the CDC and FDA are alleging that the vast majority, or even ALL, of these cases are not related to the vaccine. Therefore, they say, Gardasil is safe.

What prompted the CDC and FDA to imply that all 10,000+ reactions to Gardasil are a mere coincidence? They reviewed data from several managed-care organizations and found “no increased risk of a pre-specified set of possible side effects.”

This leaves a lot of questions unanswered; such as how did they choose which medical records to evaluate? What were they looking for? Who did the looking? And how did they interpret what they saw?

Yet, this information is not being made public so that independent researchers can confirm or refute the findings. This is why the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), which was co-founded by Barbara Loe Fisher, one of the top vaccine experts in the world, is calling for the CDC and FDA to publicly release the study design, data, and names of principal investigators involved.

“Transparency in government is essential to trust in government and replication is the hallmark of good science,” said NVIC president Barbara Loe Fisher.

“Parents of young girls and women cut down in their prime – some of them paralyzed or dead within hours or days of getting Gardasil vaccine – deserve better answers than a whitewashing of this vaccine’s very serious side effects.

Until there is an independent confirmation of these unverified findings by individuals and companies without financial ties to the government or industry, it is not credible.”

NVIC is not the only group calling for an urgent investigation into the dangerous side effects of Gardasil.

Independent health researcher Grace Filby, who won a Churchill Fellowship for her research into phage therapy, is calling on the government for more research because she believes not enough is known about the effects of the vaccine on children with pre-existing medical conditions and weakened immune systems.

She says:

"We simply do not know whether the vaccine interacts with other medication or medical conditions, and the manufacturers have not studied it yet. This could be a very valid reason why some families and schools might hesitate or opt out."

The Deception Surrounding This Vaccine is Sickening

The Gardasil vaccine is one of the most blatant deceptions going on in modern medicine. Well-meaning mothers are being deceived into thinking this shot will protect their daughters from cervical cancer, and some of them are now wondering HOW and WHY their young child died or became suddenly paralyzed.

And here’s the real kicker: Your body can clear up a human papilloma virus (HPV) infection on its own, and it does so more than 90 percent of the time.

HPV simply is NOT the scary monster that Merck’s vaccine ads are making it out to be.

At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives, according to the National Prevention Information Network (NPIN). Most often, the infection causes no symptoms at all, and is easily cleared up by your immune system. In some cases the infection can result in genital warts, and much less often, cervical and other genital cancers.

So women who receive the Gardasil vaccine are risking serious side effects to protect against a virus that typically causes no symptoms and no harm. This is true even of the “high-risk” HPV infections.

Even the National Cancer Institute says:

"It is important to note, however, that the great majority of high-risk HPV infections go away on their own and do not cause cancer."

This is why although more than 6 million women contract HPV annually, cervical cancer claims less than 3,900 women – most of which are due to not getting regular Pap smears. In the U.K., cervical cancer claims only 400 lives per year.

So before you even think about getting this potentially dangerous vaccination for yourself or your daughter, make sure you know what you’re risking your health for.

Help to Support Vaccine Freedom and Choice

Gardasil is only one of many potentially dangerous and ineffective vaccines being pushed, and in some cases, mandated, on our children. In the past 25 years, the number of doses of vaccines that paediatricians give U.S. babies and children under age 6 has tripled. What does this mean? Children may receive:

It is up to each parent to decide for their child whether this manipulation of the immune system with increasing numbers of vaccines is a good thing or not. This is not a matter of being for vaccines or against them; it is a matter of defending your right to make educated, voluntary health care choices.

Yet, currently NVIC is being flooded with vaccine reaction reports and parents are reporting that they’re unable to get vaccine exemptions, or those they had are being pulled. We are reaching a critical mass. NVIC’s Web site will help a lot with awareness, but as more people become aware there will be the need for a bigger response, and that takes money.

NVIC is dedicated to the prevention of vaccine injuries and deaths through public education and to defending the informed consent ethic. If you would like to help them further their mission, you can donate now.

As far as what NVIC will immediately use the funds for:

1. To launch a national education campaign about vaccine risks and wellness alternatives to vaccination

2. To continue to work for vaccine freedom to protect and expand state vaccine exemption laws

3. To expand counselling services for parents reporting vaccine reactions, injuries and deaths

4. To hold the International Public Conference on Vaccination Oct. 2-4, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

5. To educate Congress about the need to remove the vaccine safety monitoring system from federal health agencies responsible for developing, regulating, making policy for and promoting mass use of vaccines, and create a new vaccine safety monitoring entity with public participation and directly reportable to Congress

NVIC does not promote the use of vaccines, nor do they advise against them. Rather, they support your right to make an informed vaccine choice for yourself and your family.

9. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #395 – November 02, 2008

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

In Europe "Baby Hatches" are available. These are common, particularly in the Catholic countries of Europe. These allow a mother to leave her newborn in the care of modern medical facility without identifying herself. When placed in such a hatch, a sensor alerts workers that a baby has arrived. In Germany, babies are cared for eight weeks, during which time the mother can return and claim her child without any legal repercussions. If she does not return, the child is put up for adoption. However, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has stated in a draft resolution that this is not an answer, rather abortion is.

Spain – Aids National Suicide

The Spanish Socialist Worker's Party is planning a national law that will guarantee that abortions can be paid for as part of the Social Security Services to any women. They call this equity and want universal access. Probably the last thing that Spain needs is to kill more of its babies, as it is now averaging less than 1.2 babies per woman in her lifetime, while Muslim immigrants continue to have large families. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it won't take too many years before Euro-Caucasian Spaniards are a minority in Spain. (2.1 babies per woman are needed to protect the population).

God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Quote of the Week – By abortion, the mother kills even her own child to solve her problems. And, by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. The father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion leads to abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love but to use violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion. – Mother Teresa

Item #2. Vatican Called On To Re-Open Debate On Brain Death As End Of Life
Professor Scaraffia said that in 1985, and again in 1989 and 2006, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences had recognised brain death as "the true criterion for death". The 2006 document, entitled Why the Concept of Brain Death Is Valid as a Definition of Death, was signed by Cardinal Georges Cottier, then theologian to the papal household; Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, at the time president of the Pontifical Council for the Family; Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the former Archbishop of Milan; and Bishop Elio Sgreccia, the then president of the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The Vatican had thus accepted that the cessation of heart and lung functions was no longer the only criterion for declaring someone dead, Professor Scaraffia said. However it was time this was re-examined, since members of the Roman Catholic Church in practice had voiced "many reservations", and in Vatican City itself "the certification of brain death is not used".

Item #5. Parliament Debates Human-Fertilization Bill; Abortion Amendments Blocked
The British Parliament took up a final debate on the controversial Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) bill on October 22, under rules of debate that effectively stymied plans to introduce amendments that would have eased access to legal abortion. Those rules – set by the Labour leadership to avoid defections a rebellion among Catholic lawmakers – seemed likely to prevent a proposal to extend the UK abortion law to cover Northern Ireland. But even without abortion-related amendments the HFE bill would open the way to creation of 'hybrid' human/animal embryos, artificial fertilization for lesbian couples, and greater experimentation with human embryos.

Item #6. Researcher: Economic Impact Of Abortion In U.S. Since 1970 – $35 To $70 Trillion
Researcher Dennis M. Howard, president of the pro-life group Movement for a Better America, who has been tracking the economic impact of abortion since 1995, has shown that the 50.5 million surgical abortions since 1970 have cost the U.S. $35 trillion dollars in lost Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If the number of missing children includes those aborted by IUDs, RU-486, sterilization and abortifacients, the figure climbs to over $70 trillion.

Opponents of a Washington State assisted-suicide ballot initiative say hastening the deaths of terminally ill patients is "playing God."

The initiative, which if approved would allow physicians to prescribe lethal doses of medication if requested by terminally ill patients, is against God's will, faith-based groups say, while proponents contend it would allow "death with dignity," The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Monday.

Item #9. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly: A Down Syndrome Tale
Today's column is a response to several news reports on Down syndrome and related subjects. I guess it all started with the statistical report that 90 percent of mothers who learn from prenatal testing that their baby has Down syndrome will opt for the premature death of their child by abortion.

I found the ABC News reporter's nearly jubilant attitude toward a new test for detecting Down syndrome very troubling, although she also reported, "Advocacy groups warn that the test which gives women the option to end a pregnancy sooner – could diminish an already small population of about 400,000 who have Down syndrome.

Item #10. The Vocation Of Christian Marriage As An Approach To The Bioethics Of Human Reproduction
Marriage is an institution that has been around as long as mankind. One would think, then, that we would know a lot more about marriage than we do. If anything, current statistics on divorce and infidelity would seem to indicate that we are regressing rather than progressing in our understanding of marriage. Here is not the place to rehearse the misunderstandings of the nature of marriage that are rampant in contemporary society. The challenge here is to determine what truth or truths about the objective reality of marriage need to be heard by our contemporaries and to explore how we might get them to see and accept the objective reality of marriage. The intent here is to use this information to understand better the Vatican teaching that in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) are morally impermissible even for spouses.

Most organ donors are still alive when their body parts are removed, according to a paediatrician writing in the Journal of Law and Medicine. The law forbids harvesting while there is still brain and circulatory activity, yet two minutes is too soon, Dr Tibballs says, to be certain that circulation cannot be resumed.

10. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #396 – November 09, 2008

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Psychiatrists warn that abortions cause problems. England's Royal College of Psychiatrists has stated that abortion businesses should tell women that abortion presents numerous mental health risks, and stated that abortion shouldn't be done unless women are counselled on these possible risks. The abortionist "should assess for mental disorder and for risk factors that may be associated with subsequent development of problems."

Philippines and Induced Abortions: The Guttmacher Institute, a branch of Planned Parenthood, has publicly estimated that there were 473,000 induced abortions in the Philippines in the year 2000. Criticizing this number as being wildly inaccurate, leaders of the pro-life movement there arrived at an alternative estimate of 25,000 using one method and 20,000 using another. Guess which numbers received international press attention.

God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Quote of the Week – If people contemplate and really see the sanctity of life, their "quality of life" arguments fall away and they will understand that we are here to care for each other, not to kill each other. Caring, and not convenience, is the sign of a civilized and just society! – Ron Panzer

Item #1. Moving Forward On Reproductive Health
[Note:  These are the same people who falsely define "pregnancy" as beginning at implantation (based on the false term "pre-embryo"). Feminist bioethics lawyer Charo is one of the Founders of Bioethics (which adopted the false McCormick term early on), and leader of "reproductive health" at the UN, worldwide. They advocate that all these issues relating to the early human embryo be "reframed" as "public health" when the new administration moves in (which would then move through governmental bodies globally). And historically, bioethics, created out of thin air in 1978 by the U.S. Congress' Belmont Report, has always "transferred" their successful "redefinitions" and "reframings" to the end of life issues as well (and vice versa). Wake up America. You've had over 30 years to figure out all of this. Dianne Irving]

We know full well that to kill what is clearly seen to be an innocent human being or what cannot be proved to be other than an innocent human being is as wrong as wrong gets. Nor can we honourably cover our shame (1) by appealing to the thoughts of Aristotle or Aquinas on the subject, inasmuch as we are all well aware that their understanding of matters embryological was hopelessly mistaken, (2) by suggesting that "killing" and "choosing to kill" are somehow distinct ethically, morally or criminally, (3) by feigning ignorance of the meaning of "human being," "person," "living," and such, (4) by maintaining that among the acts covered by the right to privacy is the act of killing an innocent human being, and (5) by claiming that the being within the mother is "part" of the mother, so as to sustain the oft-repeated slogan that a mother may kill or authorize the killing of the being within her "because she is free to do as she wishes with her own body."

Item #4. The Choice To Be Pro-Life
Comment: Ms. Fairchild, this writer who faced a choice like Sarah Palin's when she received a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome, states "I chose life, but I am thankful I had the choice." Ms. Fairchild apparently thinks she has the rebuttal to Sarah Palin but what she fails to realize is that these "choices" do not occur in a private vacuum and that legal abortion itself helped foster the attitudes and discrimination that she now so abhors. She mentions Buck vs. Bell but that case was not really about "reproductive rights" but rather ignorance and injustice towards a person with a disability. As is also true about abortion for Down Syndrome. In the end, the lives of children like Ms. Fairchild's daughter should be protected, not hang on issues like the economy, societal approval or even how her parents feel about her-either before or after birth. – Nancy Valko, RN

Item #8. Trial Starts For Surgeon Accused Of Speeding Man's Death To Harvest Organs
Comment: Across the country, "non-heart beating organ donation" is becoming more common. Since 1968, an individual must be brain dead before their vital organs are considered for organ donation, while being kept alive through artificial ventilation. However, "it is now apparent that the number of organs from people declared brain dead will never be enough to treat all patients who need new organs." (Nancy Valko, http://www.wf-f.org/02-3-OrganDonation.html) And that need has caused a move toward "non-heart beating organ donation." This means that, regardless of the presence or absence of brain activity, patients are considered for organ harvesting after the heart stops beating. So the criteria for donation is now that the person is considered "hopeless." And this judgment is arbitrary, and thus, problematic. So the surgeon on trial allegedly drugged the patient with narcotics enough to depress respiration, which, indeed, would soon cause the heart to stop beating. Now imagine you are unconscious, and you signed documents allowing the donation of your organs. Even though you might not be able to respond to your environment, you might still be able to hear what is going on. After all, haven't nurses been trained to talk to their unconscious or comatose patients as though the patient could hear them? So you could be aware that you are being taken to a surgical suite and prepared for the donation of your organs. This is a horrifying thought, not to mention that it is unethical. – Deb Sturm, RN

"This position is grounded in our basic values of respect for the sacredness of life, compassionate care of dying and vulnerable persons, and respect for the integrity of medical, nursing and allied health professions. We do not believe health care providers should ever be put in a position of aiding a patient in taking his or her own life."

Item #12. Conception And Abortion: Much Closer Than You Think
In 2005 alone, 1.21 million abortions were performed. That's 3,315 abortions a day, 138 abortions an hour, 2.3 abortions every minute.

Reasons women give for choosing an abortion include not having the resources to care for a child, difficulties with the father, interference with work or school and having other children to care for already.

But a growing belief is that it's not due to poverty, pursuit of careers and money, or concerns about being a single parent.

A growing belief is that it's due to contraception and the mentality it implies.

11. Rev. Joe Wright ‘Prayer Of Repentance’ – November 14, 2008

This prayer burst into the public consciousness back in January of 1996, when the Rev. Joe Wright, senior pastor of the 2,500-member Central Christian Church in Wichita, was invited to deliver the opening prayer at a session of the Kansas House of Representatives. On that occasion he offered the following "Prayer of Repentance" (which was not entirely of his own crafting but rather was a version of a prayer written in 1995 by Bob Russell, who had offered it at the Kentucky Governor's Prayer Breakfast in Frankfort):

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and seek your direction and guidance.

We know your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good," but that's exactly what we've done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.

We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of your Word and called it moral pluralism.

We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism.

We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.

We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem.

We have abused power and called it political savvy.

We have coveted our neighbours' possessions and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.

We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us O God and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.

Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of Kansas, and who have been ordained by you, to govern this great state.

Grant them your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of your will. I ask it in the name of your son, the living saviour, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
