1. Aborted Fetal Material Used In Anti-Wrinkle Creams – October 29, 2009Contact: Children of God for Life, 615-898-1070, info@cogforlife.org
TENNESSEE, Oct. 27 Christian Newswire – Children of God for Life announced today that Neocutis, a bio-pharmaceutical company focused on dermatology and skin care is using aborted fetal cell lines to produce several of their anti-aging skin creams.
"It is absolutely deplorable that Neocutis would resort to exploiting the remains of a deliberately slaughtered baby for nothing other than pure vanity and financial gain," stated Executive Director Debi Vinnedge. "There is simply no moral justification for this."
For years Children of God for Life has been a watchdog on pharmaceutical companies using aborted fetal cell lines in medical products and they have received thousands of inquiries from the public on the use of aborted fetal material in cosmetics.
Until now, this was the first time they have encountered any company bold enough to put the information right on their own website and product literature. A quick investigation into the science behind the products revealed the shameless data.
Neocutis' key ingredient known as "Processed Skin Proteins" was developed at the University of Luasanne from the skin tissue of a 14-week gestation electively-aborted male baby donated by the University Hospital in Switzerland. Subsequently, a working cell bank was established, containing several billion cultured skin cells to produce the human growth factor needed to restore aging skin. The list of products using the cell line include: Bio-Gel, Journee, Bio-Serum, Prevedem, Bio Restorative Skin Cream and Lumiere. But Vinnedge is calling for a full boycott of all Neocutis products, regardless of their source.
"There is absolutely no reason to use aborted babies for such selfish motives," Vinnedge said. "It is anti-life, anti-woman and counter-productive as Neocutis is about to find out!"
Children of God for Life is calling on rival cosmetic companies to take advantage of some free advertising by their company.
"We know there are companies using moral sources for collagen and skin proteins. We intend to publicly promote these other cosmetic companies competing with Neocutis that are willing to step forward and contact us."
Meanwhile Vinnedge advises women who are using Neocutis products to throw them in the garbage and to contact the company to express their concerns.
In addition she advised, "Contact some of these competing companies and ask them to verify their products are morally produced. If they are willing to commit to it in writing, they will get our endorsement."

By Meredith Moss, Staff Writer – Updated 1:02 AM Monday, October 26, 2009
DAYTON – After her best childhood friend died from breast cancer, Ruth Deddens began researching the causes of the dreaded disease.
The Oakwood woman’s investigation eventually led her to Angela Lanfranchi, a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and president of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute. Deddens, active in the “40 Days for Life” movement, decided to bring Lanfranchi to town as part of this year’s local pro-life campaign.
Lanfranchi – who insists there are proven links between breast cancer, abortion and birth control pills – was the featured speaker at St. Anthony Church in East Dayton and a Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25, public gathering at the University of Dayton. She also spoke at two invitation-only events hosted by Deddens in memory of her friend, Katherine “Kit” Benham England, who died last Easter.
Lanfranchi labeled hormonal contraceptives “a Group 1 carcinogen” and said that “breasts are different after an induced abortion because they’ve grown and there are more places for the cancer to start.” She said the same thing happens in premature delivery. In contrast, she said, a full-term pregnancy offers protection against the disease because the mother’s mammary glands have fully matured into cells capable of producing milk and most resistant to carcinogens.
“I could kick myself in the butt for waiting until I was 40 to have children,” said the surgeon, who said she was focused on her career and hadn’t realized her fertility rates would drop as she got older. Having children in the early twenties or as a teenager, she said, would also have decreased her breast cancer risk.
Among the other strategies for lowering breast cancer, she said, are limiting alcohol, exercising, not smoking, maintaining a normal body weight, breast-feeding your children, avoiding induced abortions, avoiding premature deliveries, and reducing exposure to estrogen. Lanfranchi advocates natural family planning rather than birth control pills, patches or injections.
Bonnie Borel Donohue of Bellbrook, diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, attended all four of Lanfranchi’s presentations.
“I had taken the pill before our first child, and after three children I had the Norplant for four-and-a-half years,” she said. “If I had heard her (Lanfranchi) at age 18, I would never have used any hormonal birth control. I didn’t realize they were steroids.”
After hearing Lanfranchi, Jenni Roer of Centerville said she was heading home to do her own research.
“I heard some interesting information, and not all of it is supported by the general medical community,” she said. “I think women should be informed and aggressive about protecting their own health.”

3. Come & Learn About The Dangers Of Euthanasia Being Proposed In Our Country! – November 1, 2009
Alex Schadenberg is the executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition – Canada, the Chair of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition – He is on the forefront of the move to prevent the legalization of euthanasia in our country.
Alex will be speaking in Halifax on Nov 27 to the doctors and medical professionals on the topic of caring versus killing and on Nov 28 to the general public on the topics of euthanasia, assisted suicide and the new eugenics.
Because of Bill – C384 is currently before the Canadian Parliament these are extremely timely talks that everyone should hear.
It is particularly important that Alex will be speaking with just the health care professionals in one session.
We should “ALL” be informed on this topic and Alex's visit with us will give us an opportunity to do that.
The Friday evening talk on Nov 27 is at 7 pm, this is for medical personnel only.
The Saturday talk is November 28 at 2 pm. This is for the general public.
Both talks will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Church Hall next to St. Thomas Aquinas Church 1725 Oxford St., Halifax, NS
4. Defining Polygamy's Place In Law – October 26, 2009
Winnipeg Free Press – Print Edition
Defining polygamy's place in law – By the Staff WriterBattered and bruised by a protracted battle and numerous thwarted attempts to prosecute polygamists who live openly and in defiance of criminal law, British Columbia's attorney general decided last week to turn to the Supreme Court of B.C. for an opinion on whether that law was constitutionally valid. In making the reference, Mike de Jong announced he would not appeal a ruling last month that quashed charges against two men.
The reference is a welcome development. British Columbia has been at the epicenter of the national debate over the polygamy prohibition, which seems to trample the religious beliefs of various groups that practice it. In Canada, this debate has focused on the right of a man to have multiple wives – no Canadian woman has stepped forward to assert her right to more than one husband and the most public display of polygamy centers on a compound at Bountiful B.C., established by a fundamentalist sect that broke away long ago from the Mormon church.
Last month a B.C. Supreme Court judge quashed charges against Bountiful leaders Winston Blackmore – who is said to have 19 wives – and James Oler. The judge found former attorney general Wally Oppal had overstepped his authority in shopping around for a prosecutor who would take the cases to court. Two previous special prosecutors personally selected by Oppal considered the charges and told him that while Sec. 293 is constitutionally valid, the most efficient test of the law would be to refer it to the province's Court of Appeal. Oppal, facing repeated investigations by the RCMP at Bountiful, opted instead to appoint a third special prosecutor, who eventually agreed to take the charges to court. Both that prosecutor and the charges were dismissed by the judge last month.
The reference to the province's supreme court is Mr. de Jong's last, desperate resort, an uneasy compromise for a minister who has very few options left. There is a law on the books against multiple spouses and a vocal public growing increasingly cranky about scofflaws who openly flout it, amid allegations of sexual exploitation and a fear that young girls have been taken in marriage.
B.C. certainly is not alone in its discomfort, not the only jurisdiction to have some interest in the judicial opinion. Canada increasingly welcomes Muslim immigrants from the Middle East and Asia, and immigration authorities and officials with provincial social services face hard decisions over bids to bring in and support multiple wives. Like the Bountiful believers, these families are ready to fight to defend their marital practices under the banner of religious freedom. Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, declaring polygamy fundamentally out of step with the values of modern Canadian society, quickly announced federal lawyers will join in the defense of the polygamy law.
Mr. de Jong chose to send the polygamy reference to the B.C. Supreme Court, rather than to the appeal court, so his government could fully explain its position, presenting evidence and witnesses – putting a face to the practice, he said. But the court, should it agree to hear this reference, should not be drawn into a surrogate trial of Bountiful's men. Canada needs a clear, dispassionate arbitration of a law written long ago and now at odds with a Charter protection for religious freedom in a diverse, pluralistic society.

Dear Friends for Life,
The situation gets worse for our young people. I just received this news brief from American Life League's STOPP project. It's entitled, "PP official to youth: Get sexually active and get your STDs".
Quote: The vice president of medical affairs for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Dr. Vanessa Cullins, let the cat out of the bag on a YouTube video column, when she told young people to just accept the fact that they are going to be sexually active and will get STDs.
The video is entitled "Let's Talk about Sex." She introduces herself as an obstetrician/gynecologist who is "a sexually active individual." (More information than we wanted to know!) "The purpose of this column is for us to become more explicit in talking about sex," she says. "Conversation is necessary whether you're thinking this is going to be a relationship that is going to end up in marriage or one that is going to end up as a one night stand," she advises young people.
"Expect to have HPV once you become sexually intimate," she says. "All of us get it." The best young women can do for themselves is to get a Gardasil shot, according to Cullins, and cervical cancer screening.
"But my best advice for staying healthy is to admit that you are a sexually active individual like most of us, and that you are going to have sex and that you need to take precautions in order to stay healthy."
Of course, the implication is that if you are not sexually active, you are not "like most of us," and therefore a freak, exerting even more pressure on young people to become sexually active. Indoctrinating youth to follow this advice will undoubtedly continue to feed PP's lucrative sex-oriented business which last year grossed over $1 billion, with a profit of $85 million for the abortion giant.

Item #1.Personhood: The Right Language And The Correct Strategy At The Right Time
The vast majority of Americans believe that the baby is fully human at viability. Yet we have abortion on demand through all nine months. A sizeable majority in at least 34 states (enough to enact a Constitutional Amendment) believes that life begins at conception or sometime in the first six weeks (the time when virtually no elective abortions are performed). Yet we have abortion on demand through all nine months for any reason.View full article at Forerunner
Item #2. Birth Control Pills Unpopular In Japan
Tokyo – a decade since their much-publicized introduction, low-dose birth control pills are still struggling to gain popularity in Japan due to strong fears about side effects.September marked the 10th anniversary of their introduction in the country, but the number of users was estimated at just 3 percent of women between the ages of 16 to 49 – considered the prime childbearing years – as of 2008, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.

Item #3. The Drive To Redefine Defenseless Human Beings Into Mere Natural Resources
For years, organ transplant ethicists and some in the bioethics community have agitated to change the definition of death from a purely biological determination, to one based in utilitarianism and desired sociological narratives. Why mess with death? Too few organs are donated for transplant, leading to long waiting lines and the deaths of some people who might be saved were organs more readily available.View full article at denverpost.com

Item #5. Abortion Makes Europe A 'Continent Of Death,' Spanish Bishop Warns
Bishop Demetrio Fernandez of Tarazona, Spain voiced his support this week for the October 17 March for Life in Madrid and warned that with the legalization of abortion, "a true ecological disaster" has been unleashed in Europe and will turn it into "a continent of death.""This is a true ecological disaster, which affects the unborn child, the mother who has conceived him, the different people involved in the issue (the baby's father, the grandparents, health care workers, etc.) and all of society that will suffer from the negative impact of this ecological disaster," the bishop said in a pastoral letter. He pointed out that since the legalization of abortion, "some 50 million children were not born, who today would be 50 million young people," which Europe needs desperately as the population "is prematurely aging and is dying of sadness and despair."

It is no shocking news that many physicians and researchers have been purposefully "doctoring" the real objective scientific facts of human embryology and related sciences for decades now in order to achieve their various goals. Whatever their reasons, it is clear that no one, and no professional organization, intends to admit the truth about what they are doing. At this point, the only rational thing to do is to sit back and watch the latest funny show.See the full article at LifeIssues.net
Item #7. A Nurse's View Of Ethics And Health Care Legislation
As a nurse, I believe that not participating in abortion is a moral and natural imperative, not a "choice". And also as a nurse, I've seen the effects of the "right-to-die" movement on health-care providers and their education over the years. Personally, I have become sick of hearing that this or that patient "needs to die" when the patient or family chooses not to withdraw basic care or treatment. Unfortunately, there are a lot of medical people and prominent ethicists who don't really believe in free choice when it comes to the "right to die" and who actually do think some patients are a drain on the health care system and society. Not surprisingly, many of them also support direct euthanasia.Article is located at LifeIssues.net
Item #8. In The Stem Cell Vein And Other Stories
Adult stem cells from bone marrow have been used to reverse a rare genetic disease. Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute used a mouse model of cystinosis, a genetic disease that can afflict children as young as six months old, causes deteriorating kidney function and inevitable kidney failure. Stephanie Cherqui, the scientist who developed the mouse model, said that adult bone marrow stem cell therapy is particularly well suited as a potential treatment for cystinosis because these cells target all types of tissues, and also reside in the bone marrow for the duration of a patient's life.Article can be found at FRCBLOG.com
Item #9. Same-Sex Marriage: Not In The Best Interest Of Children
As mental health professionals, it's our ethical and moral obligation to support policies that are in the best interest of those we serve, particularly those who are most vulnerable-namely, children. Same-sex marriage may be in the best interest of adult homosexuals who yearn for social and legal recognition of their unions, but it's not in the best interest of children.Proponents of same-sex marriage believe love is all children really need. Based on that supposition, they conclude it's just as good for children to be raised by loving parents of the same sex, as by loving parents of the opposite sex. But that basic assumption-and all that flows from it-is naively simplistic and denies the complex nature and core needs of human beings.
According to decades of research, the ideal family structure for children is a two-parent, mother-father family.(1,2,3) That research consistently shows that children raised in such families are more likely to thrive-psychologically, mentally, and physically-than children reared in any other kind of family configuration.

Greetings from LifeIssues.net
Dear Friends for Life,
In Slovakia abortion barriers are tightened. New legislation in Slovakia now requires a woman to undergo specific counseling on risks and alternatives by her doctor, and have a two-day waiting period prior to obtaining an abortion. Parental consent for an adolescent abortion has been raised from 16 to 18. At present, there is one abortion for every three live births. It is hoped that this will reduce the number of abortions.
The ugly "Swiss Suicide Tourism" may be stopped. The Swiss government is considering a proposal that would ban the assisted suicide operation run by Dignitas. If adopted this would end suicide tourism, whereby residents of other nations, particularly from England and Germany, travel to Switzerland to have their lives ended.
More women continue to die. Previous confirmed reports had shown that thirteen women have been killed as a direct result of using RU 486, the abortion pill. Now the maker of the drug in Europe has stated that twenty-nine women have died. This information was given to the Italian Pharmaceutical Agency by the European abortion drug maker, Exelgyn. We anxiously await further confirmation of this important comment.
Finally, your help is needed. Join those fighting for the "Culture of Life". Let your voice be heard. You definitely will make a difference.
God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Dementia is often viewed as a disease of the mind, an illness that erases treasured memories but leaves the body intact. Although the early stages can last for years, the life expectancy of a patient with advanced dementia is similar to that of a patient with advanced cancer.View full article at NYT
Item #4. Against The Flow: Tube Feeding And Survival In Patients With Dementia
Before tube feeding of a patient with dementia is initiated, all other conservative means of providing nutritional support should be exhausted. However, in many patients with severe cognitive impairment, even the best efforts at oral feeding fail. As daunting as the numbers appear to some of the authors who reported them, about half of the cognitively impaired patients who require feeding tubes will be alive 1 year after artificial nutrition is begun, and, as this review demonstrates, the feeding tubes may have improved the odds of survival.View full article at aahpm.org
Item #5. Research Uproar At A Cancer Clinic
[Note: There are two categories of "research" (according to international ethics guidelines such as the Nuremberg Code, the Declaration of Helsinki, etc.): experimental research, and therapeutic research. Ever since experimental IVF/ARTs came on the scene decades ago, what is in fact "experimental and therapeutic research" has been passed off as "standard medical care". By performing the research with private monies and behind physician-researchers' closed doors, such research has escaped regulation and oversight by our federal OHRP (such as it is). Further, the "informed consent" forms signed by women undergoing most of this research often fail to duly inform these desperate and vulnerable patients that the procedures performed on them are actually research. And which "ethics" do these "Hospital Ethics Committees" and "Institutional Review Boards" use – BIOethics? And how reliable are the data obtained from such experiments? One also has to wonder if the same "therapeutic misconceptions" obtain with the recruitment and use of human subjects in "stem cell research" and other forms of human genetic engineering. – Dianne N. Item #6. African Archbishops Sound Alarm About Planned Parenthood's "Ferocious Assault"
Attacks on marriage and the family in Africa constitute a "ferocious onslaught", says the Relator-General of the Synod under way at the Vatican. Cardinal Peter Turkson, Archbishop of Cape Coast, Ghana, described in various ways "a ferocious onslaught on the family and the related fundamental institution of marriage from outside Africa and attributed it to diverse sources". The prelate listed these sources in three categories: ideological, clinical and emerging "alternative" lifestyles. In particular, he pointed to "gender" ideology, a new "global sexual ethic", "genetic engineering", "Planned Parenthood and Reproductive Health Education", sterilization and "same-sex marriages".See the full article at Family and Life
Item #7. Conscience, Courage, And Children With Down Syndrome
A number of my friends have children with disabilities. Their problems range from cerebral palsy to Turner's syndrome to Trisomy 18. But I want to focus on one fairly common genetic disability to make my point. I'm referring to Trisomy 21, or Down syndrome.Down syndrome is not a disease. It's a genetic disorder with a variety of symptoms. People with Down syndrome have mild to moderate developmental delays. They have low to middling cognitive function. They also tend to have a uniquely Down syndrome "look" - a flat facial profile, almond-shaped eyes, a small nose, a short neck, thick stature, and a small mouth that often causes the tongue to protrude and interferes with clear speech. People with Down syndrome also tend to have low muscle tone. This can affect their posture, breathing, and speech.

I have returned to this subject more than once because I think the regular family dinner is a powerful support to family unity and the successful raising of children. Last week I wrote in this space about my own parents as an example of a successful immigrant family. Regular family dinner and family prayer were key parts of that. The old saying went that the family that prays together stays together. The family that doesn't eat together likely won't get a chance to pray together either.View entire text at CERC
Item #10. Abortion Raises Risks For Future Births
Canadian researchers who reviewed 37 case studies have confirmed a long-noted link between abortions and premature births as well as low birth-weight babies.Women who had undergone more than one abortion had a 72 per cent increased risk of having low birth-weight children and a 93 per cent increased risk of having a premature baby. The study also found that women who had an abortion in the first or second trimester had a 35 per cent increased risk of giving birth to a low-weight baby and a 36 per cent increased risk of having a premature baby.
Now, what do you think would be the logical response to that? Yes, you guessed: make abortion safer.

Item #12. Disgraced Cloning Expert Convicted In South Korea
[[Note: What is interesting about this conviction of Hwang (see today's full article copied below) is that, again, the only "fraud" reported on is "economic" fraud. There is no comment by the courts or the press on Hwang's admitted scientific fraud (i.e., falsification of data, or manipulation of materials and methods of the protocols in order to obtain desired data), or his violations of several international ethics guidelines in the use of human subjects in research (e.g., the Nuremberg Code, the Declaration of Helsinki, etc.). Nor is there any comment about the capacity, membership, or influences of the "bioethics" reviews involved (see Irving, "What is 'bioethics'?").Because I had previously sent out a number of explanations, with extensive references and comments, throughout the Hwang fraud case, I have been asked to forward a few of them again. This case is not just about Hwang or South Korea. The issues involved are almost identical to those to be understood, considered, and debated right now in the use of human patients in clinical trials – which is therapeutic research – including those clinical trials involving current human stem cell "therapies", regenerative medicine, IVF/ART and related reproductive genetic engineering protocols, etc. To that end, I will resend the following commentaries I published on the Hwang fraud, particularly since it often involves the same allied researchers (including many here in the U.S.) who are Hwang co-authors, the same state, national and international "stem cell" organizations, the same type of scientific fraud, and the same violations of international guidelines for the use of human subjects in research. Not to mention that the preliminary basic research needed to get to clinical trial research in these areas requires the use of living human embryos and fetuses, and/or the use of their genes and other parts of their cells, cells, tissues, etc. within the research protocol itself. I hope that the critically important issues at least identified in the Hwang fraud will be helpful to those concerned about all of these related issues:

Story By Piero A. Tozzi, J.D.
(NEW YORK – C-FAM) A host of nations lined up this week to criticize a special report on gender-based human rights abuses for pushing a notion of gender as a fluid social construct and advancing a United Nations (UN) "gay rights" document known as the Yogyakarta Principles rather than focusing on the assigned task of examining the abuse of women caught up in the global "war on terror."
Dubbed an "interactive discussion" with UN Special Rapporteur Martin Scheinin, criticism from the Organization of Islamic Countries and the African Group, delivered by Malaysia and Tanzania, respectively, rapped Scheinin for exceeding his mandate in violation of the Human Rights Council's Code of Conduct. According to the African Group, Scheinin misused his position to advance the controversial Yogyakarta Principles, a statement purporting to "reflect the existing state of human rights law" concerning "sexual orientation and gender identity." Scheinin was one of about thirty self-selected "experts" who crafted the Yogyakarta Principles in 2007.
In response, Scheinin defended his use of the Yogyakarta Principles as "fully legitimate," calling it a "soft law" document that "enriches" ones understanding of binding human rights norms. One delegate, in remarks to the Friday Fax, discounted the "soft law" claim, pointing out that there is no international consensus on sexual orientation as a non-discrimination category and no binding legal obligation.
A statement by the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia took Scheinin to task for departing from the agreed-upon definition of gender in the Beijing Platform for Action and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, both of which affirm the traditional understanding of the term. The United States (US) delegation, signaling continuity with Bush Administration policy, also supported the Beijing usage, while adding that the US was interested in the effect counterterrorism efforts had on the "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community." The Rome Statute defines gender as "the two sexes, male and female, within the context of society," and the Beijing document affirms the "ordinary, generally accepted usage" of the term.
The Holy See restated that "gender is grounded in biological sexual identity, male or female," and rejected "the notion that sexual identity can be adopted indefinitely." India, which seldom speaks on such divisive social issues, faulted the Special Rapporteur for redefining "gender perspective," and for taking the committee into an "academic" debate removed from his mandate.Scheinin had his defenders as well, particularly among European nations and certain Latin American countries such as Uruguay and Chile. Norway expressed "full support" for the report and welcomed Scheinin's elastic gender construct. Switzerland scolded those nations who attacked the special rapporteur because they did not agree with his submission, adding that they must comply with any subsequent resolutions based on his report.
One delegate critical of the "arrogance" of Scheinin and his European supporters summed up the exchange by saying "Basically, they are allowed to criticize us, but we are not allowed to criticize them. They are gods."
8. Pharmacist In The Longevity Business Prefers To Keep ‘Oldies’ Alive – October 29, 2009
As a pharmacist in the longevity concoctions business, I prefer to keep my 'oldies' alive
By Cristina Alarcon, The Province October 29, 2009As Canada's Parliament debates Bill C-384, why are more pharmacists not rising up in protest over possible legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide? Is it because we ought to remain neutral? Yet if this debate is supposed to be all about choice, then, as a pharmacist, I choose not to remain neutral on an issue that could impact my livelihood.
I'm in the business of health and wellness; longevity concoctions, my specialty. I believe it is more lucrative to keep my oldies alive and kicking longer; eliminating them is against my mission statement, and it would surely kill my business too. Unless, of course, I could charge a hefty sum for how-to-exit kits, including arsenic, asphyxiation bags, and other death paraphernalia.
But then comes another dilemma; as the elderly get knocked off, replacements will be needed – so I can continue to offer my services. Yet most pharmacies are also in the birth control business; sooner rather than later, my clients will largely come from overseas. Time to brush up on my Arab and Cantonese.
Are health-care providers prepared for the impact a euthanasia law could have on their day-to-day practice? If, for moral or ethical reasons they find themselves unable to comply with such a law, would they risk being fined or put in prison? Would I be accused of imposing my morality were I to dissuade sweet Ms. Jones from being euthanized by her inheritance-ravenous offspring? Yes, they will all claim it was her own choice, and really, in everyone else's best interests.
How about the lady with the severe arthritis or the man with the club foot? How about the child with the MS or the severely depressed teenager? Will our answer to their pain be their death too? If the Right To Die movement has its way, it will all boil down to "personal" choice. But whose choice will it really be? For example, as a pharmacist, I had no choice over the following briefing which states that everyone should have a choice.
In 1994, a government brief was presented to the Senate Committee Studying Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide by the Canadian Pharmacists Association. This brief clearly shows that pharmacists, like the Canadian population as a whole, are "largely divided on the issue [of euthanasia] and cannot make a strong recommendation on the legalization of euthanasia or assisted suicide." The briefing statements make it appear as though everyone involved will have a choice, but the reality is there will need to be a balancing of rights; the right of the patient to receive what he wants, versus the right of the health-care professional not to participate in the patient's demise. For many, referral will not be a viable option.
So if such a law should pass, I want to make something clear; I want two choices; the choice not to kill off my business by concocting death potions, and also the choice not to refer my oldies or disabled youngsters for liquidation elsewhere.
But, with all our "rights and choice" talk, are we not neglecting the underlying issues causing the euthanasia debate in the first place? And why are we not learning from the Netherlands? According to Dr. Herbert Hendin, American author of, Seduced by Death, the broad "safety" guidelines to prevent people from being euthanized against their will have been largely ignored, to the point where the doctors who help set euthanasia guidelines will privately admit that euthanasia in the Netherlands is basically out of control.
What we really need to be asking ourselves is: How did the patient reach the decision to put an end to his or her life in the first place? Was there any pressure? Was there fear of pain, of loneliness, or of the unknown? Has our society become so cold and ruthless that a sick person would rather die than be subjected to humiliating treatment by those who ought to care? The reality is that were euthanasia to be legalized in Canada, we would be embarking on a "social experiment" of great magnitude.
Once the experiment is unleashed there will be no turning back. Your "choice" and mine may become somebody else's.

9. Spain Awakens Against Abortion – October 17, 2009
![]()
Saturday October 17th, 2009
Spain awakens against abortion – by Carlos BeltramoThis Saturday, Madrid became the Capital of Life for several hours, when over 1.5 million people gathered to protest the new abortion bill that Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the socialists want to approve in the Congress.
Many aspects make this march noteworthy. The first is the unity displayed. More than 40 pro-life groups from the whole of Spain coordinated this march to send a message to the Spanish government that a very large portion of society disagreed with this new law. These same pro-life groups have opposed every abortion since 1985, when the previous socialist administration first legalized abortion in Spain.
Secondly, the 1.5 million protestors send a strong message that public opinion is firmly against abortion. The protesters constitute more than 3% of Spain's 48 million citizens, all gathered in the capital to make a stand for Life. Consider the results of a poll by the Spanish Family Forum, which show that only 21% of Spaniards condone unrestricted abortion, while 27% seek a full abortion ban, and 50% personally oppose abortion but think it should be allowed in certain cases. This reinforces the findings of PRI's own public opinion studies: the media battle has been lost by President Zapatero and his Socialist Party.
But the public outcry against abortion alone does not constitute reform. Many times we in the pro-life movement have thought that getting public opinion on our side would be sufficient to effect real change. This is not the case. Only 24 hours after the Madrid march, representatives of the Socialist Party in Congress spoke of continuing with the bill, regardless of the outcry, and sadly, they can force it if they choose. They have a majority due to an alliance with small portions of left-leaning representatives who have their own interest in the abortion bill. This new pro-life shift in popular opinion can't beat the mathematical advantage of the abortion axis in Congress.
However, this very crisis is causing many citizens to make the defense of life and family a central issue in the upcoming Spanish elections, who will not content themselves with simply voting for the "lesser evil." Over the next two and a half years leading up to the elections the Life issue will definitely be a defining one for politicians. Already, President Zapatero has become very unpopular with the Spanish people on account of his commitment to passing this abortion bill. Some analysts believe that the abortion issue will seriously hurt the Socialist Party in the next elections.
This issue connects us to the other major party of Spain, the Popular Party. Some of its leaders joined in the march. Many of the pro-lifers were uncomfortable with the presence of former President José María Aznar. Though he now marches with pro-lifers, back when he was in office neither he nor anyone in his party took real action against abortion. In the final analysis, though, his fellow marchers were positive about his attendance, as it allows pro-lifers to make definite demands for the upcoming election, and they form a large majority of the Spanish people.
Today, pro-lifers in Spain have three conditions that a politician must meet to be considered a "Friend of Life." First, he must take action to get the abortion bill removed from parliamentary debate. Second, if the bill is approved into law, he must bring an appeal to the Constitutional Court. Third, he must publicly promise to fight against abortion if elected.
For now, the Popular Party has agreed to the first and second conditions. On the third, however, they have yet to comment. Fortunately, pro-life groups now know their strength, given the massive turnout at the march, and these groups are going to make their demands heard in the next election.
Just recently, this newfound power of the pro-life people of Spain showed itself, when a slew of e-mails from members of "Right to Life" convinced the Popular Party to postpone a meeting scheduled for October 17 in Barcelona. This seems to indicate that Spanish society has grown tired of abortion, and is now capitalizing on the great power of its unity to effect change.
On October 16, at the request of the Spanish Family Forum and the National Association of Parents in Catholic Schools, the Efrat Institute published an informative piece called "The Abortion Business in Spain," which revealed that the abortion industry has evaded paying some 50 million Euros in taxes since 2007. (The Efrat Institute is a consulting and research organization concerned with the activities of public life.) The president of the Efrat Institute, David del Fresno, states: "The 'abortion industry' is the only industry that has public evidence of earning up to twice what they declare on their taxes without the Treasury at least opening an investigation. It's unusual. If a normal citizen shows any disproportion between his income and his possessions, a Treasury investigator starts an audit immediately. The abortion clinics seem to be immune to this logic.
The pro-life and pro-family groups are demanding that the Treasury Minister investigate the 80 registered abortion clinics in order uncover and end the fraud. Should the Minister fail to open these investigations, there would be yet another black mark against the Socialist government on Spain's election day.
Much has been said about the October 17th protest, especially in the pro-socialist media in Spain. But as always we believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. So we invite you to watch the video and make your own conclusions. Spain is waking up and her hopes for the future are as big as this march in Madrid.

10. Stacking The Deck For Euthanasia In Canadian ‘End Of Life’ Commission – October 28, 2009Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 5:17 PM
Stacking the Deck For Euthanasia in Canadian “End of Life” Commission – Wesley J. Smith
“Expert commissions” to advise on contentious issues of public policy are usually political tools designed to come to a predetermined conclusion in order to pave the way for a desired policy changes. Remember that as we take a look at a new commission being appointed by the Royal Society of Canada to look into end of life issues. From the story.
Queen’s Philosophy professor Udo Schuklenk has been selected to head a prestigious new international panel on “End-of-Life Decision Making” in Canada. Appointed by the Royal Society of Canada, the expert panel will investigate key aspects of this critical issue – including voluntary euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide – and prepare a public report.
Stories such as this never seem to look deeper than the job titles of the panelists, as if they come to their work with no preexisting positions. So, I decide to check, starting with Udo Schuklenk. What a surprise: He’s a pro euthanasia philosopher. How do I know? He’s said so. For example, in an essay explaining why he is an atheist, he wrote:
No matter how unbearably patients suffer due to illness or injury toward the end of their lives, the world’s monotheistic religions stand as one in their rejection of many dying patients’ requests to end their lives in dignity. That we may well be of sound mind, and that there is no prospect of our condition improving, makes no difference to their stance. Our own considered judgment that life is not worth living any longer counts for nothing to organized monotheistic religions. According to them, we are not ethically entitled to ask for physician assisted suicide or voluntary euthanasia. This is surprising, given that at the end of our natural lives churches have promised us that we would be going to heaven – or hell, as the case might be. If at the end of a decently lived life we would go to heaven and enjoy eternal life, why are they fighting our earthly death so vigorously? None of this makes any sense at all if we take religious beliefs about our afterlife seriously. Once again substantial, avoidable human suffering is a direct consequence of religious interference with our end-of-life decision-making.
I don’t care about his religious views, but to chair a panel with such a clear view in favor of assisted suicide, indicates the direction in which the commission’s recommendations are expected (designed) to go.
But perhaps I am being too cynical. Let’s see who else is on the commission: Ah, Scot philosophy professor Sheila McClean who wrote The Case for Assisted Suicide, a book described as arguing fervently in favor of legalization. Hmm, I wonder how she will vote?
Another commissioner is a Dutch euthanasia researcher. Cute.
Then there’s Jocelyn Downie, author of Dying Justice, a book urging the decriminalization of both euthanasia and assisted suicide. The bias isn’t even subtle.
I spent some time researching the views of the two remaining members, but neither seemed to be particularly involved in the issue. So let’s count them, at least for now, as neutrals. No matter: Even assuming both are as adamantly opposed to assisted suicide as their co panelists appear to be for it, the deck is stacked, the fix is in, 4-2 for permitting assisted suicide in at least some cases.
The next step in this Kibuki Theater will be for the media to trip over themselves to report breathlessly that “the experts” have deeply pondered, and determined–after much hand wringing, there is always hand wringing–that assisted suicide should be allowed. It is all so scripted and predictable.

University of Victoria Pro-life Club Seeks to End Unjust Discrimination
VICTORIA, B.C., Oct. 23, 2009 – The University of Victoria pro-life club, Youth Protecting Youth (YPY) has just recently been denied club funding for the second year in a row. Last year the UVic Student Society (UVSS) denied funding because of fabricated claims that YPY’s posters and activities promoted violence and harassment against women.
This year funding was denied because of a guest speaker the club chose to represent the pro-life side of an abortion debate. Pro-life activist Stephanie Gray from the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform debated UVic philosophy professor Eike Kluge. Almost 400 students attended this debate, which was twice the amount expected.
“We know that the message we bring to campus is a contentious one,” says YPY president Anastasia Pearse, “but just because some members of the UVSS disagree with us does not mean we should be singled out for special punitive treatment.” As a result of this discriminatory treatment, YPY has filed a complaint, and will be assisted by the BC Civil Liberties Association.
A university is a place where important issues should be explored and debated; when these ideas come into conflict the answer is not to censor one’s opposition, but rather to discuss the issue with them. Youth Protecting Youth has been told by the UVSS that even though they will not be funded, they are still free to express their beliefs. YPY begs to differ.
“Our club’s freedom is being undermined because of this denial of funding,” says Ms. Pearse, “and we are having restrictions placed on us that are placed on no other club.”
YPY hopes that the University of Victoria will rectify this unjust situation and allow for ideological diversity and freedom of expression on campus.

250-686-420313. What Andy Rooney Thinks About Women Over 50 – November 1, 2009
60 Minutes Correspondent Andy Rooney (CBS)
As I grow in age, I value women over 50 most of all.
Here are just a few reasons why:
- A woman over 50 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, ‘What are you thinking?’ She doesn’t care what you think.
- If a woman over 50 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.
- Women over 50 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.
- Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.
- Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 50.
- Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 50 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.
- Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.
- Yes, we praise women over 50 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 50, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress. Ladies, I apologize.
- For all those men who say, ‘Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!
Andy Rooney is a really smart guy!
Send this to five fine, fun, fabulous, fancy-free female friends over 50, or under 50. And to men who might appreciate it, too.
