1. Eggsploitation Redux - February 27, 2007
Jennifer Lahl comments: My piece from two weeks ago, An Inconvenient Truth: Eggsploitation Happens, brought our readers out of the woodwork. The response rate was phenomenal with many people saying they just never realized how few eggs a woman has for her own future fertility. Nobody doubted the potential serious health risks to young women, which there alone should end this debate over 'eggs for research'. Some responses though doubted the math and the notion that young women could become prematurely infertile because they have depleted their egg resources. I've asked a good colleague of mine to comment. Appropriately, she co-founded, Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE) in the UK.
Unscrambling the Human Egg Donation Debate, by Josephine Quintavalle. CORE press release on UK decision to pay egg donors.
Apologies to those of you who argue that women have millions of eggs and donating some of them to fertility clinics or science laboratories is risk free and no big deal. You are simply not right. I suggest that we are currently meddling at great peril with the mechanics of human reproduction, especially in relationship to women's bodies.
We might not be as bad as koala bears at reproducing, but in the mammalian stakes we're certainly not rabbits. Human reproduction is an extremely delicate, finely tuned, low fertility system, about which even the scientists know less than they think they do.
I will deal later with the risks associated with egg harvesting, but first let me deconstruct 'the millions' myth with a brief overview of oocyte (egg) biology. Yes, the female foetus around the fifth month of uterine life has an extremely large number of oocyte cells, somewhere around 14 million. From then on, however, a massive process of wastage gets underway. Only about 20% of these original oocytes survive to the next stage of growth (diplotene), a number halved again as they become follicles. Naked eggs cannot themselves produce babies - they must be surrounded by granulosa cells, and a membrane, referred to as follicles.
At birth the baby girl will be endowed with about 1.5 million at follicle stage. Wow! That's still a lot of eggs you will be saying. But wait -further loss continues throughout childhood and it is estimated that only some 500 oocytes of the original 14 million will ever be capable of ripening, let alone going on to successful fertilization after puberty. That's an overall success rate of 0.000036%! Certainly not a limitless number.
And every time healthy follicles are aspirated for egg donation, that 500 overall potential total is further depleted. Hyper stimulation of the ovaries, as opposed to normal maturation, will release some 10-12 eggs at a time, almost as many as a woman produces naturally in a whole year of menstrual cycles. I appeared on TV with a woman who had had 54 eggs harvested in one single IVF retrieval process - that's over ten percent of her whole life supply!
Another point to be made loud and clear is that we are not just dealing with limited quantities. Declining quality is also a consideration, and comes into play, as women get older. By 35 her chances of conceiving in any given cycle are reduced by 50% and by 45 are down to 1%. Young women egg donors, postponing their own reproduction, may later on find themselves seriously short of good quality eggs in sufficient numbers to achieve their own pregnancies.
On this biological basis alone women should think carefully about the implications of egg donation, but let's take a brief glance as well at the physical risks associated with egg harvesting. According to the prestigious UK Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, in their 2006 guidelines on hyper stimulation, noticeable reactions occur in 33% of IVF cycles, with an estimated 3-8% of patients showing moderate to severe reactions. Severe can mean thrombosis, renal and liver dysfunction and acute respiratory distress leading to serious morbidity. That's without even taking into account possible pelvic infection and organ puncture during egg retrieval. A 2007 literature study on thrombosis risk associated with ovarian stimulation reveals tragic cases of death, limb amputation and hemiplegia. Those most likely to suffer are younger women without any associated disease.
So to recap: During their reproductive years women have very limited numbers of viable eggs, the artificial harvesting process is extremely invasive, and the associated risks are all too real. We must say no to egg donation for research, whether paid or unpaid. Women's reproductive capacity should not be traded as part of the biotech commodities market.

2. Exposure
of Children to Online Porn Worse than Study Indicates; Expert Available - February
20, 2007
MEDIA ADVISORY, Feb. 20 /Christian Newswire/ - Your news or talk show
may be planning to cover the topic of exposure of children to Internet pornography,
based on the recent study in "Pediatrics," which reported that 42
percent of Internet users ages 10 to 17 had been seen online porn. Of those,
66 percent said the exposure was unwanted!
Abstract available at: "Pediatrics"
journal.
Exposure of children to Internet pornography is an important general interest
topic, but it also can be of interest to family, parenting, health, computing,
religion, youth and teen beats.
If you are planning to interview a guest or a panelist on this issue - either
near-term or in the future - please consider interviewing C. "Skip"
Mathews, president of Integrity
Online, the nation's largest and oldest Internet filter solutions provider.
A veteran subject-matter expert, Mathews says the percentages of children exposed
to Internet pornography are even higher than the "Pediatrics" study
indicated, because rapidly changing technologies and newer channels make the
data outdated, other studies show greater exposure rates, and the company's
experience says otherwise.
"The study data is only two years old, but that should be looked at like
'dog years' in Internet time," said Mathews.
"Think about the rapid transition to high-speed Internet access from dial-up,
and how the volume of page views is increasing exponentially. Rapidly advancing
technologies, such as iPods, the latest cell phones and Internet-ready gaming
devices, have created even more channels for pornography to reach kids. Increasingly
popular social web sites, like MySpace.com and Facebook, are also fertile ground
for pornography."
Plus, children and teens often don't respond openly and honestly to researchers,
especially discussing something as uncomfortable as pornography, said Mathews.
"I've been the father of three teenage boys, so I know what the realities
and challenges are," he said.
The "Pediatrics" study recommended that parents become more educated
and get state-of-the-art Internet filters.
"Unfortunately, even though 48 percent of parents use some type of parental
controls, as the study indicates, many have been lulled into a false sense of
security and think their children are protected, when they are not," said
Mathews.
"Children and teens often are far ahead of parents in knowing how to get
around out-dated and inadequate blocks," he said. "A firewall is not
a filter. And, besides, would a responsible parent want the same cable company
trying to sell them the 'Playboy' channel to make moral decisions about what
their child can see on the Internet via that company's filter?"
The latest Internet filters, using artificial intelligence technology, analyze
Internet information 600 different ways, identifying and eliminating inappropriate
and obscene content before it reaches Internet users, according to Mathews.
3. Even Pro-Abortion, Pro-Gay, Liberal Member Of Parliament Respects Pro-Life Priest Picketer - March 8, 2007
PS. Rosalie and I had the pleasure of having Fr. Tony with us this past summer during the Show the Truth tour, a solid priest, humble and dedicated. - Herm
By John-Henry Westen
OTTAWA, March 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For nearly the last twenty years, on almost every day when Parliament was in session, a Catholic priest has stood, prayed and fasted outside Canada's parliament buildings. That constant prayerful witness has gained him admirers even among those who disagree with his stands for life and the traditional family.
Last week, a Conservative turned Liberal Member of Parliament who refuses to support the right to life for unborn children and actively fought against the traditional family in backing homosexual 'marriage', featured Fr. Tony Van Hee on his website.
The website (http://www.garth.ca) features a regular TV post on its main page. The current video post is a short but open-ended interview with Fr. Van Hee.
In the video, Fr. Van Hee explains that he has been on Parliament Hill since 1989, starting with a campaign focusing exclusively on abortion. Later, he explains, he added issues of homosexuality, euthanasia and then had to include contraception, which, he says, "I found at the centre of all of it."
Asked, "If there was one piece of legislation you'd like to see changed what would that be?" Fr. Van Hee responded without hesitation, "Legislation to protect the unborn." He explained, "with surgical abortion we're losing 105,000 children every year, murdering them, slaughtering them, I think that's fundamental, unless we have the right to life we don't have anything."
The priest who has won the hearts of many a politician during his long vigil said he remains full of hope despite what sometimes seems like a fruitless endeavour. "I'm always hopeful because really God is in charge," he said. "He will bring about a change of hearts and minds when the time is right."
Turner's webpage introduces the video interview of the priest saying, "Conviction - For the past eighteen years he has frozen for his convictions, been showered and pelted for them, been scorched and been ridiculed. But, without giving in or giving up.
"Today he is a fixture on the side of the wide stone walkway which leads from the Centennial flame to the steps up to Centre Block on Parliament Hill. Beside Rev. Tony Van Hee, passersby will usually see gory pictures of aborted fetuses, which may want them to look away but which Tony hopes will drive home his argument that our national abortion laws are, to him, a sin.
"Some call the lone protestor a kook while others view him as heroic. And few too many stop to actually talk to this unique individual. But we did."

4. Federal Judge Dismisses David Parker's Civil Rights Lawsuit - March 8, 2007
Outrageous 38-page ruling goes further - reinforces right of schools to teach homosexuality without parents' knowledge or consent!
US Constitution trumped by "case" law and "rational" need to teach "diversity".
Friday morning, federal judge Mark Wolf issued an outrageous and horrific 38-page ruling dismissing David Parker's federal civil rights lawsuit against Lexington, MA school officials. David Parker had filed the lawsuit, along with his wife and Rob and Robin Wirthlin, last April after the schools refused to notify parents when teaching about homosexuality and transgenderism in the elementary school. School officials, aided by national pro-homosexual groups, had filed a motion to dismiss the case, which was argued before Judge Wolf on Feb. 7.
Wolf's ruling is every parent's nightmare. It goes to extraordinary lengths to legitimize and reinforce the "right" (and even the duty) of schools to normalize homosexual behavior to even the youngest of children.
·Read excerpts from the ruling, with our analysis.
In the ruling, Wolf makes the absurd claim that normalizing homosexuality to young children is "reasonably related to the goals of preparing students to become engaged and productive citizens in our democracy." According to Wolf, this means teaching "diversity" which includes "differences in sexual orientation."
In addition, Wolf makes the odious statement that the Parkers' only options are (1) send their kids to a private school, (2) home-school their kids, or (3) elect a majority of people to the School Committee who agree with them. Can you imagine a federal judge in the Civil Rights era telling blacks the same thing - that if they can't be served at a lunch counter they should just start their own restaurant, or elect a city council to pass laws that reflect the US Constitution?
Wolf's reasoning uses the Goodridge ruling on same-sex marriage as well as Mass. Dept. of Education Frameworks" and a flawed interpretation of the state Parental Notification Law - to effectively trump the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of religious freedom.
He bolsters his decision with a patchwork of statements from other court decisions - some going back over a decade - and declares that these past decagons are "law" which much be enforced when making his own ruling on this case.

Q. What's next?
A. The Parkers' lawyers have already announced that they will appeal the decision in Federal Appeals Court. They continue to be upbeat, passionate about this case, and confident they will prevail.
Q. What does this mean?
A. Although we had anticipated the possibility of this motion to dismiss being allowed, we had no idea that it would be done with such vehemence and blatant unconstitutional militancy. This is extremely serious. This ruling could be considered as "legally binding" in future civil cases, and reflects the extreme degree to which our judiciary has become disconnected from our constitutional democracy.
Q. Where does that leave parents and citizens?
A. Do we depend on the generosity of an "appeals court" or do we take action?

5. Feminism, Consumerism, & The Sexualization Of Girls - March 8, 2007
Why would anyone in their right mind want to make sex objects out of little girls? Are the feminists to blame?
Steven W. Mosher

PRI Weekly Briefing

Vol. 9, No. 9
Feminism, Consumerism, & the Sexualization of Girls - By Joseph A. D'Agostino
Missing from the American Psychological Association's report last month about the sexualization of girls, and the media coverage of it, was feminism's responsibility for this cultural disaster, which is currently harming severely the psyches of tens of millions of American young women. The politically correct view is that the sexualization of girls and feminism are opposing forces, but in fact they have gone hand-in-hand. And, according to the report, men today have exchanged "domesticity" for "sexy" in what most find the most attractive quality in a woman. Doesn't that do a lot to explain the decline in the American family and our below-replacement birthrate?
But valuing domesticity in women is so oppressive!
More than 30 years after feminism's triumph, prepubescent girls can be seen regularly in public dressed in mini-skirts. Instead of seeking to emulate domestic-oriented women, presenting themselves as future virtuous wives and mothers, little girls seek to emulate Paris Hilton. Children's dolls are made-up to look like prostitutes. "Toy manufacturers produce dolls wearing black leather miniskirts, feather boas, and thigh-high boots and market them to 8- to 12-year-old girls," the APA noted. "Clothing stores sell thongs sized for 7- to 10-year-old girls, some printed with slogans such as 'eye candy' or 'wink wink'; other thongs sized for women and late adolescent girls are imprinted with characters from Dr. Seuss and the Muppets. In the world of child beauty pageants, 5-year-old girls wear fake teeth, hair extensions, and make-up and are encouraged to 'flirt' onstage by batting their long, false eyelashes. On prime-time television, girls can watch fashion shows in which models made to resemble little girls wear sexy lingerie."
Back in college in the early 1990s, I first noticed that it was the feminist men who most objectified women. I was a member of a fraternity, so I had considerable opportunity to observe various types of college men discuss and pursue women. With few exceptions, those men who loudly proclaimed their feminist beliefs and advocated complete equality between the sexes, believing women should be just as career-oriented as men and the like, had the most predatory attitudes. They were interested in sleeping with as many as women as possible, as quickly as possible. The more conservative fellows generally slept around less and were more interested in building long-term relationships.
For those who believe in the illusions created by intellectuals and their media sycophants, this is counter-intuitive. Aren't conservative, sexist men the ones who are supposed to view women as sex objects? After I puzzled over this quandary for a while, I realized that the natural result of feminism plus consumerism was the sexual objectification of women.
You see, the feminist young men viewed women as being more or less just like them. And what they wanted most from these equals was sex. They had no any religious or ethical concerns about chastity, and not many about the sanctity of female sexuality or the fragility of female psychology concerning sex, and regarded their relationships with females as transactional. After all, they didn't force women to sleep with them. It was just a question of getting what they wanted from them, just as one man in business seeks to get what he wants from another in a business transaction.
My professional life in Washington has taught me the same lesson. The liberal, feminist men in their 20s and 30s that I have known tend to be the most predatory; the conservative, religious ones much less so. Even when it comes to top politicians, the pattern holds. What conservative Republican of the past 20 years can you name who has whored around like Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy? I'm not claiming conservative Republican congressmen and senators have been models of virtue--far from it. But they've got a much better record on this question than the other side.
Feminists have taught girls and women that chastity is oppressive, that they should liberate themselves. They have also taught that there are no natural limits to sexuality. Witness their enthusiastic embrace of homosexuality. So, based on feminist principles, why shouldn't little girls sexualize themselves? And why shouldn't adult men and women view them as sexual if there is no such thing as unnatural sexuality?
If you constantly bombard boys with sexualized images of girls and the message "girls are the same as boys" in countless different forms, the primal drive of male sexuality will lead them to prey on girls. Since they're told male and female psychology is the same, the girls must be just as eager to have sex as they are - they just need a little convincing, or a little alcohol or drugs, to loosen up from social constraints. It's really very simple.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not some self-hating male-basher who views every girl who has sexual relations as somehow a victim of male aggression, even if she consents to sex. Up to 40% of rape allegations are completely bogus. There are just as many morally reprehensible women out there as men. There are many girls around these days eager to have sex with boys, and some even seduce the males rather than wait for the reverse. They have a degraded mentality. But so do men and boys who view every attractive female as primarily a sex object.
Of course, when a girl or woman goes around exposing half of her body, how can men and boys be blamed for viewing her as a sex object? A woman's naked legs or midriff triggers a biological sexual response in most men. It's called nature.
Thus is the confluence of two powerful social forces, consumerism and feminism. The first makes us view everything in the world as an object of gratification and every relationship as transactional, and the second makes promiscuity easy and seem natural - feminism puts men and women into the consumerist category when it comes to sex. Of course, the unconditional commitment that marriage used to imply is no longer fashionable. Since sexuality is such a powerful primal force, especially for the young, this consumerist sexuality becomes a huge part of their lives. It's obvious that women tend to suffer more psychologically from this arrangement.
Indeed, the APA report links sexualization of girls to the three most common psychological problems girls experience: eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression. Even the rage for unnaturally thin women is reminiscent of desire for the prepubescent body. What is the media leading us to?
Lest you think it has been always thus, just in a different form, the APA report mentions a very interesting study of girls' diaries. First, the report says, "A focus on physical attractiveness is not new; over three decades ago, Unger (1979) argued that physical beauty can translate into power for girls. But the definition of attractiveness differs depending on the tastes of the culture. Whereas yesterday's culture may have equated 'domesticity' with attractiveness in women, today's culture equates 'sexy' with attractiveness (Wolf, 1991)."
Of course, feminists have always deplored domesticity. The woman who may be our next President famously dismissed those women who "stayed at home and baked cookies." Yet, if men used to find "domesticity" attractive, doesn't that imply they were interested in forming life-long relationships with women that included home, family, and children? Now, men find "sexy" most attractive instead. What does that imply interest in?
The report continues, "Moreover, there is evidence that physical appearance was not always the prime currency for girls' social success. Brumberg (1997) examined diaries of adolescent girls in the United States over the past 100 years to explore how they discussed self-improvement. Whereas girls of earlier eras focused on improving their studies and becoming more well-mannered, in the last 20 years that Brumberg studied, girls almost exclusively described changing their bodies and enhancing their physical appearance as the focus of their self-improvement."
That's right. Back in the bad ol' pre-feminist days, when women were so oppressed, teen girls were concerned with getting better grades and improving their social graces. Now, they want to look hot. Write Gloria Steinem today and thank her for what's she done for America's girls.

6. How Babies Went From Persons To Products: An Interview - March 8, 2007
Excellent article from a well-reputed source, The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network www.cbc-network.org. See news item at the end of this article about Trading on the Female Body. - Herm
How Babies Went From Persons to Products: An Interview with William E. May, by Jennifer Lahl.
Jeniffer Lahl: How did you get involved in the field of bioethics?
William E. May: I became interested in bioethics in 1968 while working as an editor for the Bruce Publishing Co in Milwaukee WI and when I completed my Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy at Marquette University. My wife was expecting our sixth child, Susan, born Oct. 5 1968. I had been reading Gordon Ratray Taylor's fascinating book The Biological Timebomb, which described the "new reproductive techniques" being enveloped at that time all of which I found repugnant. My wife's obstetrician Dr. John Brennan, was a good friend and pioneer in natural childbirth. I remember discussing Taylor's book in the delivery room! From then on I followed developments in the field with great interest.
Lahl: How do you see the field today vs. when you first began writing/thinking on these matters?
May: First of all, there have been terrible developments, in my opinion. The new "reproductive techniques" have transformed procreation into reproduction. In procreation, human life was regarded as a gift properly begotten, not made, in the marital embrace of husband and wife and the child begotten was regarded as a person equal in dignity to his/her parents. Today, as a result of the new biology, the entity engendered by laboratory reproduction is too often considered a product inferior to its producers and subject to quality controls exercised during its development, to be discarded (terminated) if it does not measure up to standards. Moreover, development of these techniques has facilitated the sexual revolution, and today these techniques are used to provide children to live-in lovers, same sex couples, etc. These techniques have also led to the demand for human embryonic stem cells because these embryos, while truly members of the human species, are not regarded as persons.
Those are the bad things that have come about. However, I think that today many intelligent people can see the path that all this takes toward a new kind of barbarism and are now seeking to reverse the movement toward distinguishing between living members of the human species who are persons and those who, like the unborn and "vegetative" are not.
Lahl: Are you amazed with what is taking place in the 21st century with issues like human cloning, designer babies, and the great stem cell debate?
May: I am not so amazed and one could see how all this developed from the revolution Taylor wrote about in the late 1960s. I am saddened by it.
Lahl: What are you encouraged by and hopeful about?
May: I have been teaching moral theology (Christian ethics) at a graduate level since 1971, admittedly to students the majority of whom are Catholic. In the 70s and first half of the 80s many of them repudiated Catholic teaching and I would add, the teaching of great Protestant ethicists like Paul Ramsey on the existence of moral absolutes, i.e. norms admitting of no exceptions, such as that forbidding the intentional killing of innocent human persons such as the unborn etc. Since the mid 80s the students I have had--and I have many fine young women and men-- are not like that. The Catholics are much more open to the teaching of the Church - thanks, I think, to the work of John Paul II - and non-Catholic Christians are coming to have a deeper respect for Ramsey than, say, Joseph Fletcher.
Lahl: Do you have a sense of the broader global context of the bioethics agenda: who are the allies?
May: I think people like Leon Kass, Gilbert Meilaender, and Robert George. And others are doing a good job showing that the "bioethics establishment" in the US has as it were sold its soul to the highest bidder and that some tough questions must be honestly faced.
Lahl: How did you become involved in teaching bioethics?
May: Academia is a late vocation for me. For years, from 1954-68 I was editor of Catholic books for several publishers, principally the Bruce Publishing CO of Milwaukee for whom I worked 1955-68. After I married in 1957 and Marquette reinstalled a doctoral program in philosophy the Bruce's were so good to me that they paid my tuition and allowed me to take time off for courses over a period of years. I finished my doctoral dissertation in 1968 when they went out of business. I then worked for Corpus Instrumentorum, a Catholic arm of World Publishing in Washington/NY until the end of 1970. As editor I worked on many philosophical and theological works, including fascinating books by Germain Grisez on contraception, abortion etc. When my job ended with Corpus I was about to go to work for the government when an opening in Christian ethics came up at the Catholic University, and I was fortunate enough to get the job. I quickly learned a lot, with my major mentors being Grisez, St. Thomas, and Paul Ramsey. I introduced a course on bioethics in 1973 and wrote a book on it in 1977, Human Existence, Medicine, and Ethics: Reflections on Human Life.

7. How One Wicked Nation Can Kill Billions Around the World - February 18, 2007
Well, I wasn't out looking for this kind of info, but happened upon this ad with a link to a page where Dr. Lorraine Day, who refused the 'cut, burn and poison' methods of dealing with the huge cancer tumour that she had on her breast, and opted instead to go the natural therapy route. Obviously, she made the right choice! She's here today to warn the rest of us of the sinister plans of the 'establishment' to decrease world population using, among other 'weapons', those pharmaceutical drugs our government subsidizes (but not natural health supplements).
The link at the top of this ad takes you to a page where Dr. Day's January 2006 exposé can be read. Thanks to reports like hers, we do not need to be ignorant of these malicious devices and can better protect ourselves from our so-called 'medical health system'.
Here is one excerpt from the text at the site. It'll cause you to pause before saying 'Yes.' to another 'flu shot' or 'vaccine' for your children.
All Vaccines Are Poison
"Vaccines contain decomposed protein such as that which is taken from
pustules on sick animals or putrefied eggs mixed with deadly drugs such as carbolic
acid (phenol), mercury, formaldehyde (formalin), etc. Decomposed proteins can
cause botulism, salmonella or other types of body poisoning. It's no wonder
people drop dead after the shots.
All doctors who know the subject know and admit that all vaccines are highly
toxic, and the after-effects are unpredictable. No doctor, laboratory technician
or scientist can possibly determine the reaction the vaccine will have on each
individual. It is impossible to know, in advance, the toleration point for poison,
which each person has. Therefore it is a deadly gamble-like Russian roulette-as
to whether the vaccine will cause instant death (and that sometimes happens),
or paralysis a few hours later, or cancer, heart trouble or TB a few years later,
or kidney disease, liver damage, insanity (post vaccinal encephalitis-inflammation
of the brain caused by vaccines) or some other chronic disease somewhere along
the way.
Vaccine is even worse than Russian roulette because that kills only a few
and they are usually other crooks, while vaccination kills thousands of innocent
and trusting people."
For your own sakes, please read. It's a long text document, so you may want
to bookmark it to return to read the full exposé.

8. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter 313 - March 8, 2007
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
Do men also hurt after abortion? Many people in today's world comprehend the pain suffered by women after they abort their babies. But what about men? There has been little research done to document post-abortion stress in the fathers of aborted babies. As the number of aborted children exceeds 45 million, more and more fathers are suffering in the wake of abortion. As Bradley Mattes asks on his radio program, "Can you hear their pain?" The grim fact is that fathers of aborted babies are all around us. Many suffer in silence as they struggle to get through each day. You and I must reach out to them in a spirit of love and let them know that through Christ there is hope and healing.
The pro-abortion rhetoric of "my body, my choice" does not only directly terminate the child's life, but also causes trauma and suffering to the parents. Is it no wonder that most relationships fail after an abortion? The baby - the bond - holding the husband and wife together is destroyed. Trust dies, and in turn so does the marriage.
Is it not time to become aware and take a more active stand against abortion and the damage it causes to our traditional notion of family? Is it not also time to take a bold stand in loving support of millions of hurting men - men who struggle each day with the reality and false guilt that abortion imposes on them?

Focus On Asia: Asia hit by fake drug epidemic.
AN "EPIDEMIC of counterfeits" of life-saving drugs is sweeping Asia, experts say, and the problem is spreading. Malaria medicines have been particularly hard hit. In a recent sampling in South-East Asia, 53 per cent of the anti-malarials bought were fakes. Bogus antibiotics, tuberculosis drugs, AIDS drugs and even meningitis vaccines have also been found. Estimates of the deaths caused by fakes run from tens of thousands a year to 200,000 or more. The World Health Organization has estimated that a fifth of the 1 million annual deaths from malaria would be prevented if all medicines for it were genuine and taken properly. "The impact on people's lives behind these figures is devastating," said Dr Howard Zucker, the organization's chief of health technology and pharmaceuticals.

Item #1. Japan Promoting Adoption Over Abortion
Japan has also set up "public cradles against abortion". Following
India, which last week launched a "cradles scheme" against abortions
and foeticide of girls, the Japanese Health Minister approved a decision taken
by a hospital in Kumamoto to have a "baby box" for the public.
Hospital officials said the box was intended to ensure absolute privacy for those parents who wanted to abandon their newly born babies. The "box" is an incubator, which is always working and monitored by a nurse of the hospital. Babies can be put there through an opening in the hospital wall.

Item #2. Catholic Nursing Homes to Be Forced to
Permit Assisted Suicide
"Choice" my foot: If the new bill to legalize assisted suicide in
California (A.B. 374) becomes law, Catholic nursing homes will be legally required
to permit assisted suicide to be committed within their premises, even though
doing so would be a profound violation of Catholic moral teaching. In-patient
hospice facilities would be similarly coerced, despite assisted suicide being
a direct affront to the hospice philosophy and the medical standards under which
programs operate. Other California medical facilities and group homes could
also be forced to comply. Only acute-care hospitals escape the proposed tyrannical
duty to cooperate in ending patients' lives.

Okashita had every reason to feel blessed. On Dec. 25 of last year, four of his fellow death row inmates were hanged, including Yoshie Fujinami, 72, a semi-invalid who could hardly stand, according to activists.

Item #8. Miracle Babies, Priest
A photograph that accompanied the top headline on the Drudge Report at one point
Monday looked very familiar to me. It showed two tiny feet peeking through the
fingers of a hand, and I thought at first that it was a typical anti-abortion
photo that marchers carry at pro-life marches.
In fact, it was a photo of Amilia Taylor, born four months ago at 22 weeks gestation, weighing only 10 ounces. She is believed to be the only baby born at less than 23 weeks to have survived. Amilia now weighs 4 pounds, and doctors are preparing to release her from Baptist Children's Hospital in Miami. She is now being called "the miracle baby."
Last Saturday, I held a baby that looked very much like tiny Amilia. She was just as much a miracle - she had escaped being aborted thanks to Father Benedict Groeschel. The world-renowned Catholic priest was the guest speaker at a fund-raiser for Good Counsel Homes, which he co-founded with Chris Bell in 1985 to help single pregnant women choose life for their babies and themselves. The group's five residences have provided shelter for more than 3,500 women and children.

Opposed By Ministers
At a public seminar organized by the House of Commons science and technology
committee, the government's chief science adviser, Sir David King, called on
the government not to ban the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos. He said
that extracting stem cells from these embryos would enable scientists to learn
more about diseases such as Alzheimer's, and that it should be strictly regulated
under license from the Human Fertility and Embryology Authority. Also speaking
at the seminar, the author A N Wilson said that scientists were blurring the
distinction between what is human and what is animal but "even if that
resulted in the end of all the diseases on the planet, it wouldn't necessarily
make it a good thing.

Item #12. 13-Year-Olds To Be Offered Morning-After
Pills
Girls in Portsmouth, England, as young as 13 will be able to obtain the morning-after
pill free of charge and without parental knowledge, provided they can prove
their age. The pregnancy rate among 15 to 17-year-olds in Portsmouth is 26%
higher than the national average. Canon David Hopgood, Dean of St John's RC
Cathedral, has criticized the plan, saying that it would not solve the problem,
and "They need to be looking at family life, the importance of marriage
and good stable homes where children are brought up with stronger values."

9. Lifeissues.net Newsletter #314 - March 11, 2007
Dear Friends for Life,
We are told that the current warming of our climate will bring major hardships and economic dislocations - untold human suffering, especially for our children and grandchildren. The views of scientists on greenhouse gases, climate change, and the likely impacts are even more lopsided when they blame overpopulation for this. The overwhelming consensus opinion is: 1) the earth is warming; 2) human activities are responsible; 3) left unchecked, the impact will be large, potentially catastrophic.
In his weekly Sunday Telegraph column, Cardinal George Pell - archbishop of
Sydney said people have been "subjected to a lot of nonsense about climate
disasters as some zealots have been painting extreme scenarios to frighten us."
"What we were seeing from the doomsdayers was an induced dose of mild hysteria,
semi-religious if you like, but dangerously close to superstition," he
said. "I would be surprised if industrial pollution, and carbon emissions,
had no ill effect at all. But enough is enough."
He cited some scientific evidence to try to make sense of it and noted that
the evidence on warming is, in fact, mixed. He noted that:
o Global warming has been increasing constantly since 1975 at the rate of less than one-fifth of a degree centigrade per decade.
o The concentration of carbon dioxide increased surface temperatures more in winter than in summer and especially in mid and high latitudes over land, while there was a global cooling of the stratosphere.
o The East Anglia University climate research unit found that global temperatures did not increase between 1998 and 2005.
o A recent NASA satellite found that the Southern Hemisphere has not warmed in the past 25 years. (Source: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=8678)
These are indeed cool facts for hot controversies on global warming.

That decision doesn't belong to us." - Mel Gibson, Hollywood actor and director.

In the wake of an international scandal that saw one of the world's top embryonic stem cell researchers come under fire for completely faking his studies, scientists in South Korea are now looking at alternative ways of collecting embryonic stem cells that don't involve the destruction of human life. Prof. Han Yong-mahn of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is heading up several government-funded projects to find new methods. Failed Abortion Of Twins
A Massachusetts woman who went to Planned Parenthood hoping for a successful abortion of her twin babies has filed a lawsuit against the abortion business for botching the procedure. Jennifer Raper, who is 45, wants it to pay for the cost of raising her two children.
In the three-page lawsuit, Raper says she learned she was pregnant in March
2004 and decided to have an abortion because she couldn't afford to have children.
According to a Boston Globe report, Allison Bryant did the abortion on Raper
at a Planned Parenthood facility but the complaint said it "was not done
properly, causing the plaintiff to remain pregnant."

Item #3. Polish Government Would Hike Support For
Large Families
Poland's finance minister, Zyta Gilowska, has announced plans to give 17.5 billion
zloty (nearly $6 billion) in government aid to families by 2014. The government
program envisions a major increase in government support for families, which
is currently set at 120 zloty ($40) per year annually, and a 2-week extension
for government-mandated maternity leaves, which currently are fixed at 18 weeks.
The program is a response to complaints from the League of Polish Families,
a party that has joined the center-right governing coalition, that the current
tax system discriminates against large families. The party has argued that support
for larger families is necessary to reverse the country's demographic decline.

Item #4. Family Policy Group Confirms Spain As

The Institute for Family Policy in Spain unveiled a report today entitled "Assistance

families on the part of the government of President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
The report also confirms that of the 25 countries that make up the European
Union, Spain provides the least amount of assistance to the family.
"Today out of the 25 EU [countries], Spain is the one that provides the
least assistance to families, allotting only 0.5% of its GDP. Moreover, it's
the only European country that does not allot at least 1% of its GDP,"
the report explains.

For Handicapped Spanish Woman
In a controversial case in which the distinction between euthanasia and the

of the Spanish region of Andalusia has authorized a woman suffering from muscular
dystrophy to disconnect the respirator that is keeping her alive.
The Committee on Ethics of the Council of Andalusia announced its support for the request by Inmaculada Echevarria, who argued that hers was not a case of active euthanasia, but a rejection of further treatment.
Yet, despite her claim, Echevarria is not terminally ill and the artificial
respirator she uses is not prolonging her life but rather supporting her so
she does not die of asphyxiation. The decision by the Council will shield the
doctors who disconnect the respirator from legal liability.

Item #6. 100 Million Women Missing Due To Selective
Abortion, Women's Groups Tell United Nations
The IPF (Institute for Family Policy) and 18 other organizations from around
the world - all with UN consultative status presented a report last week at
the 51st session of the Committee on the Situation of Women, which is taking
place in the United Nations Head Quarters in New York from 26 February to 10
March.
The report addresses the situation of female children in various countries, and focuses particularly on the discrimination against them practiced in many countries, including denial of the basic right to be born.
The report reveals that 100 million women are missing from today's world as a result of selective abortion and female infanticide. 80 million of the missing women are due to selective abortions in India and China. And in other Asiatic countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Caucasus (Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia) female infanticide is giving way to selective abortion.

35-year-old from Cheshunt, Herts, was persuaded to think again by her doctor.
Now, eight years later, she has gone on to have two daughters after being reassured

Item #8. End-Of-Life Teaching More Than 'Dilemmas,
Controversies,' Priest Says
Church teaching on end-of-life issues is much more than "dilemmas and controversies,"
a priest-physician told a gathering of Catholic health care ethicists in Chicago
March 1.
"Don't let people hijack our church anymore," said Jesuit Father Myles N. Sheehan, a geriatric oncologist who is senior associate dean for educational programs at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago.
"Let's pay attention to church teaching and not to what someone reads in this liberal magazine or that conservative magazine," he added, noting that the 46-page "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services" is "a three-line document to the rest of the world."

Item #10. Poll: Support For Abortion Dropping,
More Americans Want It Illegal
A new national poll conducted last month by ABC News and the Washington Post
finds that the level of support for legalized abortion is on the decline. Meanwhile,
the number of people who say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases
in on the rise.
The media outlets conducted the poll from February 22-25 with telephone interviews with 1,082 American adults and it has a three percent margin of error.
The poll asked respondents: "Do you think abortion should be legal in
all cases, legal in most cases, illegal in most cases or illegal in all cases?"

Item #11. When Killing Yourself Isn't Suicide
The deconstruction of language, with disregard for facts and accurate definitions,
is infecting medical and health-care ethics and policies. Case in point: In
order to further the legitimization of assisted suicide, the American Public
Health Association (APHA) embraced the political advocacy of assisted-suicide
supporters in November when it decided that "physician-assisted suicide"-an
accurate and descriptive term-should be replaced with the euphemistic advocacy-phrase
"aid in dying." At its annual meeting, the organization approved an
interim policy:
Urges health educators, policy-makers, journalists and health care providers
to recognize that the choice of a mentally competent, terminally ill person
to choose to self-administer medications to bring about a peaceful death is
not "suicide," nor is the prescribing of such medication by a physician
"assisted suicide." Urges terms such as "aid-in-dying" or
"patient-directed dying" be used to describe such a choice.
This policy will become permanent if confirmed by the APHA's governing council
in 2007.

10. Phony Illinois Parental Notice Bill Puts Teens' Health at Risk - March 12, 2007
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Mar. 7 /Christian Newswire/ - The 'Adolescent Health Care Safety Act,' HB 317, (sponsored by Rep. John Fritchey) is a misnamed bill that puts teenagers' health at risk. It enables teenagers to have abortions behind their parents' backs. Instead of notifying their parents, teens can notify a sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, clergyman, social worker, doctor, counselor, etc.
Because of the immaturity of the adolescent anatomy, teenagers who have abortions fall into a high-risk group for breast cancer and subsequent premature births. [3,4,5,6,7,8]
Last year, the Institute of Medicine included "prior first trimester abortion" as a risk factor for premature birth. [1] Premature birth is associated with cerebral palsy for children and breast cancer for mothers.
On its website, Planned Parenthood of Australia lists some health risks of abortion, including accepted risk factors for premature birth (infection and cervical and uterine anomaly), suicide, Asherman's syndrome, impaired fertility (a risk factor for breast cancer), etc. [2]
Cancer groups admit that an early first full term pregnancy reduces risk considerably. Consequently, even Dr. Lynn Rosenberg of Boston Medical School, an expert witness for the Center for Reproductive Rights agreed during testimony in 1999 that the young woman who has an abortion has a higher risk than the one who has a baby. [9]
"Parents are the best health care decision-makers for their children," said Karen Malec, president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer. "They alone have a comprehensive knowledge of the family's health history."
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer is an international women's organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer.

12. Porn Rampant Among 13-Year-Old Boys… - March 7, 2007
A new Canadian study is a wake-up call to parents to start talking to their children about the dangers of viewing pornography.
As Canadian Press reported, a survey of urban and rural 13-year-olds revealed that boys in particular are being exposed to startling amounts of sexually explicit materials, most of it via the Internet.
University of Alberta researcher Sonya Thompson reported in a news release that more than one in three boys had viewed porn on the Internet and almost one in four had watched sexually explicit DVDs or videos "too many times to count." For girls, the figures were eight per cent and four per cent respectively.
Most of the online viewings were deliberate. Three-quarters of the boys and almost half the girls surveyed said they had consciously searched for Internet pornography.
"If you're 13 and you can't put a number on the times [you have viewed pornography], that's a little frightening," Thompson told CP. "I hope parents think about their own values around this stuff and start talking to their kids."
Of the 429 students surveyed in 17 urban and rural schools across Alberta in 2003, nearly 60 per cent said their parents had no rules about what kinds of movies they watched, and more than half said no one bothered to monitor their Internet activity.
Thompson said parents are failing to address the social impact of "this
whole subculture of kids and porn."
"Discussion of pornography and rules in the home . . . make a difference
in kids' overall access [to porn], particularly for boys," she said. "There
[have] got to be rules and boundaries that are clearly articulated."
The study also found that only 13 per cent of students said there were devices on their home computers and TVs that blocked access to offensive materials.
But Cathy Wing, acting director of the Media Awareness Network, a non-profit group that promotes media literacy, contends that technology is no substitute for parental involvement.
"They don't teach kids the critical thinking skills they have to learn" in order to negotiate a highly sexualized media environment, she told CBC News.
"In a few quick years, pornography has come out of the sleazy fringe into the mainstream," an editorial in the Edmonton Journal noted.
"It's time for society to come up with better ways to help parents and their children navigate this new environment. Parents and schools are way behind the kids on this one."
Safe Injection Site Illegal, Says UN
Vancouver's supervised drug injection site should be shut down because it violates international drug control treaties by "encouraging illicit trafficking," the United Nations' drug control agency has claimed.
As the Vancouver Sun reported, the United Nations' International Narcotics Control Board will notify Health Minister Tony Clement of its findings at a conference in Vienna later this month.
At issue is Article 4 of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Signatories to the convention, including Canada, are obligated to pass domestic laws that limit the legal use of illicit drugs to medical and scientific purposes only.
"In a way," said Zhu Li-Qin, chief of the board's Convention Evaluation Section, by helping addicts to inject drugs, Canada "is encouraging illicit trafficking."
"Traffickers are searching for markets," he said, "and a [supervised site] serves as a small market where people go and legally inject drugs."
"Although we understand the compulsion behind these sites, the convention says drugs are supposed to be used for medical or scientific purposes - not for getting public nuisances off the streets," said Melvyn Levitsky, a retired U.S. ambassador on the board.
The clinic operates as a pilot project under a research exemption granted under Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
As a result, said Dr. Julio Montaner, head of the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, which evaluates the research done at the site, "We totally refute the notion this is in non-compliance with Article 4. This is, in fact, in full compliance."
According to radio station CKNW, Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan also insisted that "the site is a base for valuable research."
Last September, Clement deferred a decision on whether to keep the site open. Instead, he extended its exemption until December 31, 2007. To date, Clement has not said if he plans to renew it.
Ranks Of 'Mompreneurs' Growing
Growing numbers of Canadian women are opting to create their own home-based businesses as a way to stay home and care for their children while earning income at the same time, the Globe and Mail reported.
Between 1996 and 2006, according to Statistics Canada, the number of self-employed women rose from 744,800 to 876,600 - an 18 per cent increase. Most are between 25 and 54 years old, almost 80 per cent are married and more than half have children.
Most of these so-called "mompreneurs" have quit their jobs and careers so they can give more attention to their young families while still being involved in the marketplace. For many, there is simply the need to make ends meet.
"Women are saying they want to have more control over how much time they spend with their families," Kathryn Bechthold, founder of the Calgary-based Mompreneur Networking Group Inc., told the Globe and Mail.
The group offers training and resources to women who have started or want to start a home-based business, and also publishes a free magazine called The Mompreneur.
Career counsellor Colleen Clarke encourages mompreneurs, especially those with young children, to keep their business and parenting roles as separate as possible.
"The thing you need to watch is that you are not on the phone and your kid is yelling 'Mommy, Mommy' in the background," she said. "That just can't happen."
Clarke adds that if these women decide to rejoin the corporate world when their children are older, their experience in running a home-based business should make it easier for them to find a job. "You are valued because you now have management and leadership skills," she said.
13. Rights Groups To Tell Parliament To Keep Consent At 14 - February 1, 2007
In recent conversations and virtual meetings with national organizers, the thought is that the public has had enough of the "marriage issue" and is tired of hearing it. It sort of says the other side has won by wearing down the public on the issue. Some call it the shelf life of the issue has worn out. The current government has done little to appease social conservatives and this issue deserves our support to protect young lives. Not sure what can be done since apathy has generally set in and the media is totally mum on the issue from where I sit.
Here is the push from the homosexual lobby to retain the age of consent for anal sex at 14.
Our MP's need and must here from the silent majority on this issue.

Taking it to the Hill - YOUTH RIGHTS / Rights groups to tell Parliament to keep
consent at 14 - Gareth Kirkby
Canada's leading gay groups are gearing up to fight the proposed Conservative bill to raise the age of sexual consent. The Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO), the Sex Laws Committee, the Age of Consent Committee and the Committee to Abolish the 19th Century are all planning briefs or presentations to the Parliamentary Justice Committee as it considers Bill C-22. Egale is also expected to make a presentation. Youth activist Andrew Brett is expected to lead the charge of queer opposition to the bill raising the age of consent to 16 from 14 (while keeping the age of anal consent at 18). Brett is a leader of the Age of Consent Committee, a group of queer youth and other activists who believe young people have the right to make their own choices about when they have sex and with whom.
Bill C-22 will criminalize youth sexuality and also make it difficult to reach young people with important information about safe sex and contraception, says Brett. But he sees it as part of a larger law-and-order agenda pursued by Stephen Harper's Conservatives. Raising the age of consent plays well with the hardcore social- conservative rightwing while still sounding reasonable to many middle-of-the-road Canadians who are not getting exposure in mainstream media about why it's a bad idea, suggests Brett. The Justice Committee might not even get to the matter before the Conservative government is toppled and an election called, says Brett, noting former Justice Minister Vic Toews has over-filled the committee's agenda with a deluge of law-and-order bills. But Harper might like not getting to Bill C-22, says Brett. Then he can claim the other parties are stalling on legislation that would "protect" youth from sexual predators.
Tom Warner, longtime activist and CLGRO member, says the group has already written a brief opposing raising the age and distributed it to all members of Parliament last fall. They also intend to make a presentation to the Justice Committee as it debates the issue this spring - if an election doesn't intervene. And CLGRO will try to keep the issue alive in the gay community through the next federal election. And if it's not adopted, but re-introduced after an election, CLGRO will be there to speak out in opposition, says Warner.
Leading gay activists are determined to stay on the issue, despite general public support for raising the age, he adds. And they're not accepting mealy-mouthed platitudes from most Liberal, NDP and Bloc politicians afraid of voting against the bill. "I don't think you can compromise on this issue. If you support the notion of sexual self-determination for youth, you have to vote against this," says Warner. Richard Hudler says the Sex Laws Committee is working on a submission and is planning to make a presentation to the Justice Committee "if it comes to that."
He's hoping for the long-shot options: the Conservatives withdrawing the legislation because of an over-full committee agenda, then an election being called and the Conservatives losing and the Liberals choosing not to bring in similar legislation. After all, the Liberals long opposed raising the age of consent, though they've lost the courage of their convictions when pushed on Bill C-22. Hudler is frustrated by NDP suggestions of minor amendments, such as one that would allow health professionals to keep confidential information about sex practices of sexually active youth.
The important point, says Hudler, is that studies show that "by age 13, young people are able to make decisions about their sexuality. "If they're physically astute enough, we should be making sure they're socially astute enough to make the decision. If not, we need to educate them."
Peter Bochove says the Committee to Abolish the 19th Century will also speak
to the Justice Committee in opposition to raising the consent age. "It's
so wrong. It's a civil liberties issue. They're criminalizing an activity that
for the last 100 years hasn't been criminal." Gays and lesbians need to
see through the coded language and word play in the consent debate, says Bochove.
"When they're talking about pedophiles, they're really talking
about us. If they were really concerned about child rape, they'd take people
out of the home [where studies show most sexual exploitation of children occurs]."
The law already outlaws child exploitation, notes Bochove. He's disappointed
that the political parties that claim to be progressive are so far largely backing
the bill. "Fourteen-year-olds are being stripped of their civil liberties
and are in no position to defend themselves because they can't vote, and mommy
and daddy can vote. Mommy and daddy have been scared into supporting it, petrified
into it. [And the political parties are] looking at public opinion polls that
are coming out of sensationalist news stories."
If the Harper Conservatives survive the next election, "you're going to see more" socially conservative legislation, Bochove predicts. Religious values are creeping back into Canadian politics, he says. And even the NDP now has a faith caucus, and their Justice critic, Joe Comartin - the politician who should be leading that party's charge against Bill C-22, but instead supports it - is a committed Roman Catholic. "Church and State are separate entities and should remain that way," says Bochove. "I think people are entitled to believe any fairy-tale that they wish and if it gives them comfort, that's great. But they should keep it in their church, not my Parliament. "You can be progressive and Christian and it's not mutually exclusive. But these people tell the rest of us that we have to live what they believe. And that's why they don't belong in government."
Egale is "ramping up" for the issue, says acting executive-director Kaj Hasselriis. "It's not like there's a whole campaign ready to roll." But the organization last year took a stand against raising the age of consent and the legal issues committee is continuing to discuss it. They'll make a presentation before the Justice Committee, says Hasselriis.

14. Right of Government to Censor the Terms 'Natural Family,' 'Marriage' and 'Family Values' - March 8, 2007
Ninth Circuit Declares Right of Government to Censor the Terms 'Natural Family,' 'Marriage' and 'Family Values'
TEMECULA, Calif., Mar. 7 /Christian Newswire/ - Earlier this week, San Francisco's
United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in the matter of /Good News
Employees Association v. Hicks
http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.jz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oaklandcityattorney.org%2FPDFS%2FOpinions%2FGoodNewsruling2-2005.pdf/
that the municipal employers can completely censor the terms "natural family,"
"marriage" and "family values" as hate speech. The unpublished
"memorandum" by the Court can be found at http://www.profamilylawcenter.com/_docs/35.pdf
The court

concluded that municipalities have a right to literally dictate what form an
employee's speech may take, even if it is in regard to controversial public
issues. Shockingly, the court concluded http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.mz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ca9.uscourts.gov%2Fcoa%2Fmemdispo.nsf%2Fpdfview%2F030507%2F%24File%2F05-15467.PDF
that the interest of Christian employees in speaking out on the issue of marriage
is "vanishingly small http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.jz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oaklandcityattorney.org%2FPDFS%2FOpinions%2FGoodNewsruling2-2005.pdf"
and that the "administrative

interests of a city are more important than speech rights. The court completely
failed to address the concerns of the appellants with respect to the fact that
the City of Oakland's Gay-Straight Employees Alliance was openly allowed to
attack the Bible in widespread city e-mails, to deride Christian values as antiquated,
and to refer to Bible-believing Christians as hateful. When the plaintiffs attempted
to refute this blatant attack on people of faith, they were threatened with
immediate termination by the City of Oakland. The Ninth Circuit http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.mz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ca9.uscourts.gov%2Fcoa%2Fmemdispo.nsf%2Fpdfview%2F030507%2F%24File%2F05-15467.PDF
did not feel that the threat of immediate termination had any effect on free
speech.
The Pro-Family Law Center vows to immediately take this ruling up to the United States Supreme Court on a petition for review.
Last month, attorneys Scott Lively and Richard D. Ackerman argued the case on behalf of an African-American Christian woman who was threatened with termination at her job with the City of Oakland. The City of Oakland claimed that references to the "natural family, marriage and family values" constituted hate speech which is scary to city workers. Mr. Lively argued that the terms "marriage," "family values" and "natural family" could just have easily been used by gay activists in expressing their opinions on the issue of same-sex marriage. Mr. Ackerman argued that the Pro-Family Law Center's clients were entitled to the exact same free speech rights http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.nz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.profamilylawcenter.com%2F_docs%2F36.pdf as those who had openly attacked the Bible through the city's lines of communication with full approval of high ranking officials.
The Ninth Circuit panel of judges included Judges Fletcher, Clifton, and Ikuta. Without citing a specific author for the memorandum of decision, the Court wrote, "the district court http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.jz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oaklandcityattorney.org%2FPDFS%2FOpinions%2FGoodNewsruling2-2005.pdf correctly held that [the City of Oakland] had a more substantial interest in maintaining the efficient operation of their office than appellants had in their speech, appellants cannot establish a viable free speech claim."
Back in February of 2005, United States District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled
http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.jz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oaklandcityattorney.org%2FPDFS%2FOpinions%2FGoodNewsruling2-2005.pdf
the city of Oakland had a right to bar two employees from posting a Good News
Employee Association flier promoting traditional family values on an office
bulletin board. According to the lawsuit, gay and lesbian city workers had already
been using the city's e-mail, bulletin board, and written communications systems
for promoting their views to other workers, including the plaintiffs.
In fact, the e-mail system was even used by a high- ranking official of the City of Oakland to declare that the Bible "needs updating" and other insulting comments were lobbed at the plaintiffs by city employees and officials. No action was taken against those responsible for the public attack on the Bible and Christians working for the city.
Plaintiffs, Regina Rederford and Robin Christy posted the flier in response to an e-mail to city employees announcing formation of a gay and lesbian employee association and other communications. The two Christians responded with a promotion of their own - the start of an informal group that respects "the natural family, marriage and family values."
But supervisors Robert Bobb (now in charge http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.oz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.robertbobb.org%2Fpress.html of the Washington DC school district http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.pz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.k12.dc.us%2FDcps%2Fboe%2Fboebios.html%23robert) and Joyce Hicks, (deputy director of the Oakland Community and Economic Development Agency) ordered removal of the flier, stating it contained "statements of a homophobic nature" and promoted "sexual-orientation-based harassment," even though the flyer made absolutely no mention of homosexuality.
The July 2003 lawsuit by Rederford and Christy claimed the city's anti-discrimination policy "promotes homosexuality" and "openly denounces Christian values."
U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker dismissed the case in February 2005, ruling the two women did not have their First Amendment rights violated and that federal anti-discrimination protections afforded to gender, race, and religion did not apply to the women plaintiffs.
The flier in question was posted Jan. 3, 2003, on an employee bulletin board where a variety of political and sexually oriented causes are promoted. Titled, "Preserve Our Workplace With Integrity," the entire text said:
Good News Employee Associations is a forum for people of Faith to express their views on the contemporary issues of the day. With respect for the Natural Family, Marriage and Family values.
If you would like to be a part of preserving integrity in the Workplace call Regina Rederford @xxx- xxxx or Robin Christy @xxx-xxxx
The flyer was removed the same day, however, by order of Hicks and by immediate enactment of a censorship policy by Robert Bobb http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=reyuk6bab.0.pz9cl6bab.tuqepibab.948&ts=S0233&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.k12.dc.us%2FDcps%2Fboe%2Fboebios.html%23robert.
In a memo announcing a newly revised workplace anti-discrimination policy, Hicks noted recent incidents of employees "inappropriately posting materials" in violation of that policy. At the time she noted, "Specifically, flyers were placed in public view which contained statements of a homophobic nature and were determined to promote sexual orientation-based harassment."
Attorney Richard Ackerman says, "We are going to take this case right up the steps of the United States Supreme Court. We are simply unwilling to accept that Christians can be completely silenced on the issues of the day - especially on issues such as same-sex marriage, parental rights, and free speech rights. If we fail to get U.S. Supreme Court review, however, it will be up to each individual Christian in the United States to stand up for their rights to be heard on the issues of the day. If we choose to be silent, silenced we shall be."

16. Story Of Premature Baby Prompts Calls To Lower Britain Abortion Limits - February 25, 2007
By Steven Ertelt - LifeNews.com Editor - February 25, 2007
London, England (LifeNews.com) - The story of the birth of a baby in the United States who some doctors consider the world's most premature baby to have survived is prompting more calls for Britain to restrict late-term abortions. A previous push for legislation to disallow abortions into viability failed to secure enough votes.
England currently allows abortions through the 24th week of pregnancy, which medical experts and pro-life groups say pushes abortion into the period when unborn children can survive outside their mother's womb.
As many as 2,000 abortions occur in Britain annually during the 22-24 week period generally though to be the point of viability.
Professor Stuart Campbell, a consultant at the Create Health Clinic and formerly head of obstetrics and gynecology at King's College School of Medicine, told the London telegraph newspaper that Britain should change its laws.
"To me it seems utterly illogical that, in adjacent wards, one doctor is struggling to save a baby delivered at 23 weeks while another is aborting a healthy baby of the same age," he said.
Campbell is reacting to news about Amillia Taylor state2108.html, who was born at just 21 weeks into the pregnancy four months ago at Miami's Baptist Children's Hospital. With no baby born before 23 weeks surviving at length, her story has become a worldwide sensation.
Taylor was just 284 grams (10 ounces) and 24 centimeters (9.25 inches) long when she was born and doctors typically say that babies weighing less than 400 grams have very little change of surviving.
Babies born at full-term typically spent 37 to 40 weeks inside their mothers before delivery.
Her mother, 37 year-old Sonja Taylor, faced fertility issues and used in-vitro fertilization to conceive Amillia. But she battled problems throughout the pregnancy.
Mother delivered baby at 21 weeks on October 24 and Amillia was barely breathing. Her parents named her for a Latin word meaning "resilient, fighter, hardworking."
Tory MP Nadine Dorries sponsored a bill in the British parliament last year that would push the abortion limit up to 21 weeks.
Though the parliament failed to approve the bill, she said in December she would come back with a revises proposal calling for a halt to abortions at 20 weeks and a one-week reflection period between the request for the abortion and when it's done, shorter than the 10 day period in her previous bill.
"Clearly this is a barbaric practice and I will not stop campaigning until it is outlawed," she told the BBC.
Her first bill, which failed on a 187-108 vote, divided the pro-life community with some supporting the limits and others saying they didn't go far enough and contained too many exceptions to adequately protect unborn children.
Last month, England marked the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Abortion Act, which allowed unlimited abortions through 24 week of pregnancy.
There are about 180,000 abortions done annually in England and Wales each year.
17. TV Ads For NS To Begin March 20th - February 27, 2007
TV ads supporting and promoting Adoption ready to go. All parameters have been met, and you can be sure there were many. Here's how it all happened. We talked about TV promotion for life for many years and realized that a budget of 20,000 to 30,000 dollars are necessary for a minimum campaign, based on knowledge from other areas and our TV promotions several years ago with election ads encouraging people to vote pro-life.
Fruition began 22 1/2 years ago with a Gala Dinner held at the WTC with the
Soda Shoppe Gang for entertainment, dinner and silent auction. The dinner was
held under the banner of Positive Options for Women as the name Campaign Life
conjures up political overtones. The proceeds from this dinner were donated
to the JPII (John Paul II Media Institute) on the proviso they would produce
the ads. It has always been an idea
promoted by a board member that the ads would involve local people with local
stories.
The JPII institute along with people from CLC, POW and the community came forward
with their story of adoption and powerful it is. You'll love the ads: abortion
is not mentioned. The ads are to begin March 20th on the Oprah Winfrey Show
and followed on the Dr. Phil Show on ATV. The ads will cover mainline Nova Scotia.

A tremendous thank-you and prayers answered to all of our supporters for this magnificent project. It has been said and it is true, that one picketer outside a facility that is doing abortion can change the direction of a young mother towards life. So too it will be with this advertising. One child can make a difference. One only has to look at Gianna Jennsen who survived a saline abortion, and for myself, my grandfather who intervened with his 17-year-old daughter, my mother.
Thanks and God Bless for He is great.

MATTERS OF LIFE AND DEATH - StandUpGirls: 'You're not alone'. Counselors have message for the young and pregnant. - February 27, 2007 - By Bob Unruh - © 2007 WorldNetDaily.com
Becky's story starts out like many: she was young and in school when she found out she was pregnant, and she assumed she was alone. But she wasn't, and that made such a difference she's now reaching out through the StandUpGirl.com website http://www.wnd.com/redir/r.asp?http://www.standupgirl.com to tell other young, pregnant girls about hope.
"You're not alone. There are many who are facing the same situation you are facing," she told WND she tells the girls who contact her through the site, which features blogs, chat, advice, information and an assurance that every single one of the thousands and thousands of contacts gets an answer.
Becky's unplanned pregnancy was "devastatingly frightening," she told WND in a telephone interview from her home, where she now lives happily with her child and husband. "I didn't have anywhere to turn."
Her friends were partying, involved in their studies, and she felt "stuck in a whole different world." She was "mortified" to go into the local crisis pregnancy center in her small town because the desk clerk "was a girl I'd been going to school with."
But she was fortunate in that her boyfriend, now her husband, remained with her, and she was able to assemble a support network that provided her reassurances when she needed them. That's what now she offers through the StandUpGirl.com website, http://www.wnd.com/redir/r.asp?http://www.standupgirl.com a non-profit that is run on donations.
"By coming to this website, they can gain new friends, new knowledge, and learn a lot more about their options," she said. "We network together. Whether you're dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, you find your daughter is pregnant, or you're deciding whether to adopt, other people are going through it too, and we can put you in touch, help you process what you're going through."
Gayle Atteberry, director for the seven-year-old web operation, said Becky was the original StandUpGirl, and continues to have her story featured on the website intended for those who may not feel inclined to pursue help at a website run by an overtly Christian organization.
But this site, answering questions such as, "When does a baby's heart begin beating?" reaches into those audiences. It also has testimonials, photographs of newborns, 3D and 4D ultrasounds, information about fetal development, columns on being a teen mom, "Biology 101," forums divided into "Girl Zone" and "Guy Zone," and 24-hour crisis pregnancy and adoption telephone contacts.
There also are a few cautions, such as one regarding the morning-after abortifacient: "How would you feel if your doctor gave you a drug and said, 'Here. This can cause hemorrhaging, infection, and possibly toxic shock. It's not 100 percent safe, but don't worry. Only ten women have died in the past few years. I'm sure you won't be one of them.' Would you feel safe? Would it be worth it? I might take this risk for a life-threatening illness, but pregnancy is not a life-threatening illness."
Now there are five StandUpGirls, each one of them busy answering questions from the casual to the urgent, such as from any girl who states plans to have an abortion.
"We came together with a goal to reach girls who do not consider themselves pro-life. They may or may not be, they've never thought about it," Atteberry told WND. "They never in a million years would think about going to a pro-life site.
"We wanted to reach them and appeal to them with the human feeling side of abortion. What does it really do to me? That's exactly what they're concerned about," she said.
She said the range of emotions for the girls is inclusive: frightened, perplexed, scared, wondering what to do, resentful, angry.
The website's goal is provide hope and courage: "They need courage to do what their hearts want to do, hope for the fact that it could be possible," Atteberry said.
She said most, even young girls who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant, do want to have their babies, but societal's messages for the last 20 years have emphasized heavily the abortion route.
"They feel cornered, pressured," she said.
But when girls visit the StandUpGirl.com website http://www.wnd.com/redir/r.asp?http://www.standupgirl.com - as about 250,000 people do each month, for time periods of up to 25 minutes - there are amazing results, she said.
"We have kids writing in, saying, 'I never realized this about abortion. I didn't know it affects a girl. I'm changing my mind on the abortion issue. I know things I never knew before…'" she said.
One surprising side effect has been that many girls also are writing in that after their Internet education, they are choosing abstinence.
"My favorite responses are the ones who actually change their minds from abortion to life after going to the site," Atteberry said. "In January, six girls wrote us, and we know that's an absolute tip of the iceberg. So we think hundreds of babies have been saved."
The StandUpGirls are there to respond to initial inquires from girls, come alongside of them, quell their fears and give good, practical tips on how to handle various parts of the situation - how to tell a boyfriend, how to tell parents.
The girls, Atteberry said, often come in thinking they are abandoned. "They just don't think they can have this baby," she said.
The site has been so successful - it's always in the Top 5 of web sites to do with abortion in the world - that the organization routinely lives from donation to donation.
"It's expensive. We are spending a lot of money on keyword advertising [in search of those who need help,]" she said. "We're always raising money here. http://standupgirl.com/web/index.php" (Note: Scroll to bottom of left column for "Donation." The group is set up for online donations through PayPal made out to StandUpGirl.com.)
"The biggest help in the entire world [for the young and pregnant] is to talk to the StandUpGirls and realize they are not alone," Atteberry said.
