2. Benedict Says Pressure For Euthanasia Mounting Because Of Population Control, Tight Medical Resources – February 25, 2008
By John-Henry Westen in Rome
Vatican City, February 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Today Pope Benedict XVI received the participants in a Pontifical Academy for Life-sponsored conference taking place at the Vatican. The international congress entitled, "Close by the Incurable Sick Person and the Dying: Scientific and Ethical Aspects" has some five hundred participants from all over the world.
In opening the conference Bishop Eli Sgreccia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, informed participants that this is the third time the Academy has addressed the topic of euthanasia. He pointed out that the intense focus on euthanasia underscores the pressing nature of the issue. According to Sgreccia, the results of population control, self imposed and otherwise, are being felt as the elderly are left with little or no family to give them care in their last moments. Moreover, with medical resources tightening, as a burgeoning baby boom generation puts increasing strain on the medical system, and with a lower proportion of working population to sustain the care, the pressure for euthanasia is mounting.
In his remarks to the participants, which overflowed the beautiful Clementine Hall, the Holy Father made similar observations as Sgreccia about the underlying reasons for the increasing pressure for euthanasia, and reiterated the "the firm and constant ethical condemnation of all forms of direct euthanasia, in keeping with the centuries-long teaching of the Church".
"No believer", he said, "should die alone and abandoned".
"Every person in need," he said, should find "the necessary support through appropriate treatments and medical procedures – identified and administered using criteria of therapeutic proportionality – while bearing in mind the moral duty to administer (on the part of doctors) and to accept (on the part of patients) those means for preserving life which, in a particular situation, may be considered as 'ordinary'".
All society "is called to respect the life and dignity of the seriously ill and the dying", he said. "Though aware of the fact that 'it is not science that redeems man', all society, and in particular the sectors associated with medical science, are duty bound to express the solidarity of love, and to safeguard and respect human life in every moment of its earthly development, especially when it is ill or in its terminal stages."
The Pontiff reiterated the Church's distinction between ordinary and extraordinary forms of treatment, saying, "As for forms of treatment 'with significant levels of risk or that may reasonably be judged to be 'extraordinary', recourse thereto may be considered as morally acceptable, but optional. Furthermore, it will always be necessary to ensure that everyone has the treatment they require, and that families tried by the sickness of one of their members receive support, especially if the sickness is serious or prolonged".
The pope emphasized that society has a duty to do everything in its power to ensure that every citizen is taken care of and treated with dignity, especially as they advance in age and draw near to death. "The synergetic efforts of civil society and of the community of believers must ensure not only that everyone is able to live in a dignified and responsible way, but also that they can face moments of trial and of death in the finest condition of fraternity and solidarity, even where death comes in a poor family or a hospital bed".
Society, said the Pontiff, must "ensure due support to families who undertake to care in the home, sometimes for long periods, sick members who are afflicted with degenerative conditions, ...or who need particularly costly assistance. ... It is above all in this field that synergy between the Church and the institutions can prove particularly important in ensuring the necessary help for human life in moments of frailty".

3. Bill Clinton Lashes Out At Pro-Life Advocates – February 18, 2008
Bill Clinton Lashes Out at Pro-Life Advocates During Ohio Stop for Hillary by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor – February 18, 2008

Steubenville, OH (LifeNews.com) – Former president Bill Clinton made a campaign stop for Hillary in Steubenville, Ohio on Sunday and found himself greeted by more than 100 pro-life students from nearby Steubenville University. According to eye witnesses accounts, Clinton lost his temper and lashed out at the pro-life students during the speech.
Clinton's heated response came after being questioned on his support of abortion-on-demand.
"I gave you the answer. We disagree with you," Clinton said about the position he and Hillary Clinton hold on abortion.
Clinton relied on the old argument that pr-life advocates want to put women in prison, even though abortion bans have never targeted women because they are a second victim in the abortion process.
"You want to criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree,” he said of the pro-life advocates.
“If you were really pro-life, if you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother as an accessory to murder in prison. And you won't say you want to do that because you know that because you know that you wouldn't have a lick of political support,” he added.
Clinton claimed his police and those that Hillary Clinton supports are doing more to reduce abortions even though both have steadfastly opposed bills to limit abortions, such as a ban on partial-birth abortions not spending taxpayer money on abortions.
“Now, the issue is you can't name me anybody presently in politics that did more to introduce policies that reduce the number of real abortions instead of the hot air putting out to tear people up and make votes by dividing America,” he said.
Billy Valentine, one of the Franciscan University of Steubenville students who helped organize the protest, told LifeNews.com that he was surprised Clinton would go to Steubenville after hundreds of students told John Kerry he was wrong on supporting abortion.
“Perhaps national Democrats will finally realize that they can't take the heat from Steubenville pro-life students," he said.
"I have been amazed by the stupidity of these pro-abortion Democrats who think they can come campaign anywhere near Steubenville, especially after the utter embarrassment John Kerry went through in 2004 when he came here,” he added.
Later, Clinton said Hillary should become the Democratic nominee because she will stand up to pro-life advocates.
“This is not your rally. I heard you. That's another thing you need is a president, somebody who will stick up for individual rights and not be pushed around, and she won't,” he said.

4. Breaking News, Judge Upholds Life Support – February 13, 2008
Updated at 3:20 PM - February 13, 2008 – By Kevin Rollason
A judge has decided to keep an 84-year-old man on life support, after a contentious legal battle between the man's family and doctors.
Justice Perry Schulman ruled today that Samuel Golubchuk and his family have a right to have a civil trial on the matter.
Schulman also ordered doctors at Grace General Hospital, where Golubchuk currently is being treated, not to withdraw any life support.
Schulman also said that his court order should be added to the patient's chart so that all physicians and medical staff are aware of his decision.
Golubchuk has been on a ventilator, and using feeding tubes, since November 2007.

Canadian Priests for Life Head Fr. Jim Whelan Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
Occurred while conducting pro-life mission at Catholic parish – Monday, February 25, 2008
Fr. Jim Whelan CUMBERLAND, Ontario, February 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Fr. Jim Whalen, The National Director of Priests for Life, Canada suffered a massive heart attack Sunday morning while conducting a Pro-Life Mission at Most Holy Rosary Parish in Thorold, Ontario (Near Niagara Falls). Fr. Whelan had just finished preaching at an early morning mass and collapsed in the Church sacristy. The 68-year old gravely ill priest was taken to St. Catherine's General Hospital where he died at 9:45 a.m.
Priests for Life Operations Manager Michael Vande Wiel told LifeSiteNews that Fr. Whelan had been feeling very tired for the past few weeks but there was no awareness of a heart condition and Fr. Whelan was not under any medications. The Priests for Life leader was too tired to celebrate the 7:15 a.m. mass and restricted himself to giving the homily, after which he sat down in the sacristy and then collapsed and was taken to hospital.
Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life in the United States commented on the loss of Fr. Whelan. "All who are building the Culture of Life have lost a great leader and friend in Fr. Jim Whalen," said Fr. Pavone. "Fr. Jim understood that contraception, abortion, and euthanasia are enemies of the human family, and he fought these evils with truth and compassion. Fr. Whalen played a key role in starting the international growth of Priests for Life. We look forward to continuing to work with our Canadian brothers and sisters."
Fr. Jim, a priest of the Archdiocese of Ottawa since 1972, in addition to being pastor of St. Margaret-Mary Parish in Cumberland ON (near Ottawa), has been the founding National Director of Priests for Life Canada since the fall of 1996. Priests for Life Canada is an organization of Catholic lay people and clergy dedicated to supporting Canadian Catholic clergy and laity in the Sanctity of Life cause.
Fr. Jim Whelan Prior to becoming a priest, Father Jim taught at all levels in the Ottawa Separate School system. In addition to being bilingual, he was serving as the spiritual director of The Senatus, the Governing Body of the Legion of Mary, Northern Ontario. He also spent thirty years as Chaplain for Native Peoples of Ottawa and was one of the founders of Odawa Native Friendship Center. Further involvement included his work assisting the Ottawa area Catholic Home Schooler's Association as Spiritual Advisor and he taught Religious Science for two years at Ottawa University.
In the summer of 1996, Fr. Jim was asked by a group of people in the Diocese of Pembroke to take on the role of National Director for a newly created organization called Priests for Life Canada. Without hesitation, Fr. Jim accepted. When asked why he was so open to taking on this challenge, Fr. Jim answered, "As a priest, we cannot 'not be involved'. We must use all the forces available to us to attack the problems of contraception, abortion, and euthanasia".
Surviving immediate family are his three sisters: Isabelle Patry, Montreal QC, Joanne Taylor, North Bay ON, and Patricia Whalen, North Bay ON.
Further details re: funeral services, etc. (to be held in Orleans, ON) will be provided as soon as they are available and can be obtained by calling1-888-300-2007 (Canada and the United States).

6. Doctors Advised Abortion But Baby Born Healthy – February 27, 2008

Doctors Advised Abortion; Baby Born Healthy – by Devon Williams, Associate Editor
http://capwiz.com/fof/utr/1/COJDIDIQCV/LURIIDIQLQ/1763781491
‘How many other babies are killed who would have turned out to be completely healthy?’
A Wales couple are enjoying their healthy 5-month-old son after they defied doctors' recommendation to abort him.
Before Brandon Kramer was born, doctors diagnosed him, via an MRI scan, with a rare brain disorder that reportedly would cause deafness and blindness. Becky and Kriss were told their son probably would survive only a few hours. Just weeks before Brandon's birth, doctors recommended abortion.
The couple ignored the doctors’ advice and welcomed a healthy boy on Oct. 1, 2007. He is now teething and attempting to talk.
"I feel incredibly guilty thinking that I could have killed him — and then I find myself wondering how many other babies are killed who would have turned out to be completely healthy,” Becky told London’s Daily Mail.

7. Governments Must Reform Human Rights Commissions, Says Canadian Magazine Editor – February 17, 2008
The HRC's role as censors of what may or may not be printed or said in Canada must be stopped
Editorial – By Fr. Alphonse de Valk, editor, Catholic Insight Magazine (Originally published in February 2008 issue of Catholic Insight)
Toronto, February 13, 2008 (catholicinsight.com) – Over the last two months some media have exposed the nefarious role of Human Rights Commissions (HRC's) in suppressing freedom of speech in Canada and threatening freedom of religion. Originally established to sort out practical problems of racial or gender discrimination in daily labour conflicts, they have now grown into Canada’s new thought police, all too willing to step in where angels fear to tread. For a quick overview, see the article “Catholic Insight in the News” (http://catholicinsight.com/online/features/article_779.shtml). It covers the complaints against Catholic Insight, Maclean’s and publisher Ezra Levant in Calgary.
If readers have not seen anything in the news about this issue, perhaps they should change national newspapers. While there has not been a peep about this in the Globe & Mail, the National Post and the Ottawa Citizen have not shied away from the topic, helped by writers who are deeply concerned about the role of HRC’s and its impact. So are some columnists of the Sun newspapers. Western Standard’s last edition (Sept 16) exposed the HRC’s while the quarterly magazine Reality published by REAL Women has opposed them for years, as C.I. has done.
What Canadians need now are citizens who will demand from our governments – provincial and national – that HRC’s, as presently constituted, be reformed. They must stop their role as censors of what may or may not be printed or said in Canada, as they are doing today without regard to the normal role of the press in society, or to the rights to freedom of speech and religion, and without the legal safeguards of the courts. HRC’s are extra-judiciary instruments whose officials rule and levy fines on the skimpiest of evidence, or sometimes in its complete absence, as in the recent case of Baptist Pastor Stephen Boissoin in Calgary.
Their personnel seem driven by an agnostic mentality opposed to traditional standards of behaviour. One example is the badgering and bullying of at least a dozen mayors of Canadian cities over the last 15 years or so, to allow Gay Pride days. They fined those who refused, until they complied.
Toronto’s Gay Pride displays vulgarity and public nudity. The mayor gives his blessing, the police look the other way or actively take part, and the newspapers treat it as a great cultural event, which brings in “tourists” and supposedly millions of dollars, while taxpayers must subsidize the lewd carnival to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars via a city, which is deeply in debt.
Alas, many Canadians, including Catholics, have been indifferent to the progress of the “gay” agenda. They use standard replies: “You don’t have to attend Gay Pride days if you don’t want to.” “Their agenda does not concern us.” “Legalizing same-sex ‘marriage’ does not affect me.” “You’ll get used to it.” These, and other expressions like it, are based on the false notion that agnostic secularism is neutral. Well, it is not.
Today its adherents demand that all school children must be taught the equality of same-sex "marriage" to marriage between a man and a woman; that all public opposition must stop and be designated as “hatred” and prosecuted under the “Hate Crimes” section of the Criminal Code; that all adverse comments about the homosexual lifestyle and its social, family and medical consequences be stricken off the record and publicly denied as untrue.
Quite a few individuals, including us, will not do this. So we must face the HRC’s. “It is right for us to give glory in every way to Jesus Christ,” wrote St. Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr (died AD 107). “Since love will not allow me to be silent about you, I am taking the opportunity to be united in conformity with the mind of God. For Jesus Christ, our life, without whom we cannot live, is the mind of the Father, just as the bishops appointed over the whole earth, are in conformity with the mind of Jesus Christ.”
The Catholic Church, for one, cannot and will not change her teaching, not even in the face of false legislation in Canada, or Holland, or Spain, or anywhere else. We suggest we all do the same.
Please write your MP’s, MPPs or MLA’s demanding reform of the HRC’s. http://catholicinsight.com/online/

8. Hay-Bale And Cross Monument To The Unborn Erected In Southern Alberta – February 18, 2008
Lethbridge, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Directly in front of the Canadian Reformed Church in Coaldale is a huge memorial in honour of the lives of the more than 100,000 unborn babies killed by surgical abortion each year in Canada. On January 28, the twentieth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Morgentaler ruling, which struck down Canada's abortion laws, the display was erected.
Located at the Western edge of the town of Coaldale, the display consists of 100 white crosses – each representing 100,000 unborn children whose lives are ended by abortion every year in this country. The crosses are propped up on hay bale, making an impressive and eye-catching display.
The display was put up by Southern Alberta ARPA, a group formed by various Reformed churches in Southern Alberta who promote awareness and action on social and political issues.
9. In Defence Of Phill Kline – February 25, 2008
25 February 2008 Vol. 10 / No. 8 http://www.pop.org/
Dear Colleague,
Phill Kline has taken on Planned Parenthood. We must let him know that he is not alone. – Steven W. Mosher
In Defence Of Phill Kline – by Colin Mason
In 2005, Planned Parenthood listed this man as one of "Seven Politicians You Don't Want In Your Bedroom." He has been called an "anti-abortion zealot," and a "crusader." He has been accused of putting his own religious convictions ahead of the rule of law. He has been damned in hundreds of op-eds. He even has a website dedicated solely to denouncing him.
His name is Phill Kline, and the Population Research Institute would like to officially rise to his defence.
In 2003, Phill Kline, then Attorney General of Kansas, began an investigation of the Johnson County Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. Using subpoenaed medical records, Kline uncovered evidence that seemed to prove that Planned Parenthood had wilfully neglected to report instances of child rape, had forged their viability reports, and had performed illegal late-term abortions. (The records had the names and other personal information carefully redacted to protect the women's privacy.)
Planned Parenthood decided to ignore the charges. As court hearings began, PP's army of lawyers relied on procedural ploys to delay and squelch the case. In the public arena, no attempt was made to counter the charges or even to acknowledge their existence. Planned Parenthood, it turned out, wasn't interested in defending itself against the charges. Instead, it had decided to destroy Attorney General Kline's reputation.
Phill Kline, District Attorney of Johnson County, KS
The abortion giant put out a press release, which suggested that his charges, which they repeatedly referred to as "baseless," were pure political posturing. They accused him of "further[ing] his political ambition of making abortion illegal by using unethical tactics." "No health care provider should be threatened with felony convictions," said PPKM CEO Peter Brownlie, "simply because elected officials oppose legal abortion."
Following the lead of Planned Parenthood's formidable PR machine, dozens of newspapers, blogs, and public figures all went for the jugular. "Kline just personifies the abortion debate," ABC News contended in October of 2007. "This is a guy who has never tried any cases and has a very marginal record as an attorney, and so it is very much seen, I think, even by the pro-life people, that Kline's personal beliefs are his No. 1 priority." This preposterous claim comes straight out of Planned Parenthood's talking points. Apparently ABC's zeal for abortion is more important than its commitment to truth.
Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL, predictably called Kline "one of the most extreme anti-choice politicians." But then she went on to make the totally false claim that he was "invading people's most private medical information." The records, as I mentioned above, had been carefully purged of any identifying information.
The /New York Times/ also parroted Planned Parenthood's official line, calling him "an anti-abortion zealot who gained national notoriety by misusing his office to further his ideology," while gliding over the charges themselves, which they wrongly characterized as a "gross assault on privacy and legal rights."
Planned Parenthood was engaging in what might be called the PR of personal destruction, and it appears to be winning, at least up to now, especially in the media. Their all-out smear campaign against Phill Kline convinced the people of Kansas to vote him out of office last year, although he is continuing to prosecute the case as the newly appointed district attorney of Johnson County. And it has meant that the media have rarely reported the details of Kline's charges. They apparently find the Planned Parenthood cover story, that Kline is an out-of-control zealot, much more interesting.
So the liberal media machine continues to grind Kline down, while completely ignoring his charges. In the film, /Thank You for Smoking/, spin doctor Nick Naylor tells a defeated adversary, "I proved that you're wrong, and if you're wrong, I'm right." That is Planned Parenthood's strategy in a nutshell.
What should pro-lifers do? They should steadfastly support Phill Kline as he continues his prosecution of Planned Parenthood's crimes. His evidence seems to be solid and his witnesses reliable. What is more, despite the media assault, Kline still enjoys widespread support in Kansas.
A district attorney's job is to uphold the law. If Planned Parenthood violated the law, as Kline alleges, then it should be prosecuted for its crimes, however wealthy, powerful, and media savvy it is. Moreover, the courts need to move this case forward. It would be a shame if Kline did not get his day in court, simply because Planned Parenthood managed to delay the trial until Kline leaves office.
As Brian Burch of /Human Events/ has noted, although the abortion provider claims to respect the rule of law, it more often flouts it. "Planned Parenthood, through their actions," Burch wrote, "has no respect whatsoever for the rule of law or the constitutional rights of pro-lifers, and . . . will boldly make any argument, no matter how absurd or lawless, to win at any cost when their business of aborting unborn children and compliance with the law is under justifiable scrutiny."
If anyone ever doubted the essential lawlessness of the abortion movement, the ongoing saga of Phill Kline's efforts to bring Planned Parenthood to justice should more than dispel those doubts.
PRI encourages pro-lifers everywhere to combat the smear campaign being brought to bear against Mr. Kline by contacting the newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations who have run these falsehoods, and encouraging them to report on the facts, not the propaganda.

The last hour of debate now scheduled March 3rd, vote on March 5th... MPs are in their ridings this week. Here's your chance to contact them in person.
Dear Family and Friends,
Bill C-484 is before Parliament, proposing to make it a crime to attack, injure or kill an unborn child *while attacking the mother*. In the Nova Scotia case, fall of 2007, the woman had been repeatedly threatened and fearing she would be attacked, took her 6 yr old girl to the child's father's place and returned to her apartment, where her live-in boyfriend stabbed her 32 times with a sword, leaving her for dead. A neighbour found her and called 911. The woman survived, with multiple disabilities, disfigurements and pain, now living with her mother in Dartmouth.
The police charged the boyfriend with assault, obtaining a conviction this week on that charge. However, because *police could not charge the boyfriend for killing the child,* the sentence was lighter than it would have been, had murder of the baby been included. With criminals serving only about one-third of their sentences, boyfriend will be out in less than five years.
As most of you know, *there is no law in Canada against causing harm to an unborn child* since anti-life judges struck down that law by reading into Canada's Constitution a 'privacy right', while presuming as well, that privacy includes killing unborn children. Through this judicial loophole, Canada's governments over the last 40 years set up a state-funded abortion network responsible for over 2,000,000 deaths. No law has been passed by Canada's Parliament to permit abortion. There only exists an absence of law.
*Bill C-484* is specifically to protect an unborn child that the mother wants to protect. This law, although far from universal protection, takes a small step toward sanity by saying, "If someone harms or kills an unborn child during an attack on the mother, that person may be charged with a crime against the child. If the child dies and the mother lives, as in the Dartmouth case, police could lay a charge of one count of murder for the child and one count of assault on the mother.
*Bill C-484* will come to a vote this month in Ottawa, where the NDP will likely vote as a against it. Who knows how the Bloc and the Liberals will vote? If Canadian voters, however, bombard their MP's with letters, emails, telephone calls and visits to the constituency offices, explaining patiently how it is both reasonable and just to protect the child in circumstances of attack on the mother, there may be enough hearts changed to pass it.
If they don't pass it, there will eventually be an election where more reasonable MPs may be chosen.

Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #360 – February 10, 2008
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
Beware: The Maputo Plan is deceptive. A document called The Maputo Plan of Action was approved in a special session of African Union health ministers one year ago. It directly calls for legal abortion. Pro-aborts are pushing it as a consensus document, which is not true. The UN's Friday Fax details that the African Union's heads of states have never approved the document, and that trickery and deception were used by the UN Population Fund and others to push for the "ratification" of this document under false pretences. This treaty has been ratified by 21 African countries, but it is a Trojan horse. Its promoters claim it increases women's rights and fights female genitalia mutilation. Actually, it is a blueprint for legalizing abortion and penalizing the traditional family in all of Africa.
Mouse Stem Cells Pluripotent: Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have announced that they have reprogrammed mature mouse skin cells into cells that are indistinguishable from embryonic stem cells. These were pluripotent and exhibited all of the same criteria that define embryonic stem cells, including the ability to give rise to live mice. Published in the June 2007 issue of Nature, this research has been independently confirmed by scientists from the University of California in Los Angeles.
And the German government has announced that it will allocate 5 million euros for non-embryonic adult stem cell research. Since 2002, the production of embryonic stem cells has been banned in Germany.
(Note: I will be admitted to Kochi Hospital on Feb 12th for a knee replacement surgery. The webmaster for LifeIssues.net will continue sending out the weekly newsletters in my absence. I ask for your prayers that the operation will be successful. Thank you.)

Thought: "The evaluation of probabilities, founded on waning hopes for recovery when the vegetative state is prolonged beyond a year, cannot ethically justify the cessation of interruption of minimal care for the patient, including nutrition and hydration. Death by starvation or dehydration is, in fact, the only possible outcome as a result of their withdrawal. In this sense it ends up becoming, if done knowingly and willingly, true and proper euthanasia by omission." -Address of John Paul II to the Participants in the International Congress on "Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State: Scientific Advances and Ethical Dilemmas," Saturday, 20 March 2004.

Focus On Asia: "The Great Kidney Bazaar" – The unearthing of an illegal kidney trade in Gurgaon, a Delhi suburb, could have hardly come as a surprise since India has long been notorious for being the 'warehouse for kidneys' – a great kidney bazaar. Even less surprising was the fact that the alleged kingpin of this racket, a doctor with various aliases who had earned crores of rupees through unethical means, managed to escape when police raided his 'clinic'. The police find it easier to catch the small time criminal, not the affluent one.

A mother who found she had a tumour while pregnant was saved by her unborn twins' kicking, doctors have said. Michelle Stepney developed a tumour but was only diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was taken to hospital with a suspected miscarriage. But doctors found her twins' kicking had dislodged the tumour.
Mrs Stepney, from Cheam, southwest London, refused to undergo chemotherapy and a hysterectomy, which would have meant the termination of her twins.

Item #3. Parents Battle Over Life Of Brain-Damaged Daughter
Lauren Richardson, 23, has been in a persistent vegetative state since taking an overdose of heroin in August 2006. In a case with parallels to the 2005 uproar over Terri Schiavo, a Newark father is fighting a court order that could allow the removal of a feeding tube and end the life of his brain-damaged daughter.
"She's committed no crime and doesn't deserve to have this death imposed on her," said Randy Richardson, 52, on Wednesday.

Item #4. Pro-Life MPs Seek Free Embryo Vote
The Observer claims that a group of Labour MPs, including three members of the cabinet, have asked to be allowed to vote according to their consciences on the British Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) bill. Item #5. Flawed Embryos Seen As Source For Stem Cells
Embryos that are rejected for implantation in IVF treatments could be used as sources for stem cells. In a paper in Nature, Scientists at Children's Hospital, Boston, claim to have derived normal stem cells from embryos at the blastocyst stage (about five days old). The Boston Globe cites George Q Daley: "These embryos are destined to be waste, they are defective..." Daley, the president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research and a co-author of the Nature study, said that normal stem cells could be derived from embryos that had chromosomal anomalies.

Item #9. Misoprostol And The Hidden Pro-Life Crisis
The pro-abortion movement is moving stealthily to open another front in the abortion wars. Its name is misoprostol. Misoprostol is most well-known as the active ingredient in Cytotec, a prescription drug whose FDA-approved usage is to relieve gastric ulcers. Misoprostol has proven very effective in this regard, and it has also been used to treat women who are haemorrhaging from a spontaneous miscarriage, or following childbirth. This is the good news. The bad news is that it is just as "effective" at causing an abortion.

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
New Study Implicates Abortion Breast Cancer Link: In the October issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, there is an article on this link. It shows that among seven risk factors for breast cancer, abortion is "the best predictor." Also useful were the issues of fertility and previous pregnancies. This study predicts that countries such as England, with high abortion rates, can expect a substantial increase in breast cancer incidence in a few years. Where abortion rates are very low, i.e. Ireland, it predicts a much smaller increase in breast cancer. In countries where a decline in abortion is taking place, it predicts a middle ground.
Anencephaly Baby Ten Months Old: Anencephaly is a congenital abnormality. Babies born with this condition have no cerebral hemispheres, i.e. the large portion of a normal brain. They are born with only the basal portions, the brain stem. These children are commonly either born dead or die almost immediately after birth, but some have survived longer. It looks like the record now is a little girl from Rio de Janeiro, who is now ten months old, and weighs 25 pounds. She is active, recognizes her mother, and cries when she is not carried. She is beginning to swallow liquids.

Item #6. Support Marriage To Protect Children, Irish Editor Argues
In an editorial published by the Irish Catholic, Garry O'Sullivan notes that all the best available research shows that children thrive best when they live with married parents. "A pro-child society must therefore be a pro-marriage one," he concludes. If government plans to accommodate homosexual couples lead to a policy that gives equal legal treatment to same-sex unions, O'Sullivan says, the measures will undermine marriage and harm children.
Observing that marital breakdown is already a severe and growing problem in Ireland, with roughly 25% of children now being raised outside the context of a family based on marriage, the Irish Catholic editor says that the government needs to devote energy and resources to strengthening marriage and family life.

13. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #362 – February 24, 2008
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
WHO Abortion Study Fraudulent: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new study, which claims that abortions are just as frequent in nations where they are illegal as in those where it is legal. Examinations of the data however show this to be completely erroneous. Most of their figures, except in a few developed nations, are based on meagre data with a lot of assumption-laden extrapolations. Almost no underdeveloped countries maintain detailed birth or mortality records, and almost none have any abortion statistics. This makes even the roughest of estimates nothing but guess work. WHO often relies on "public source data" which may be a single journal article, or an unpublished document from a pro-abortion organization, e.g. in Uruguay it quoted studies done in the 1970s and the 1980s with sample sizes of 5, 14 and 23 individuals. From these few cases they extrapolated the number of deaths from illegal abortions for the entire country. This is ridiculous. Accordingly, the entire WHO study must be thrown into a wastebasket, as it is completely inaccurate and totally biased.
WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, Have All Lied: These three major UN organizations consistently claim that over 500 thousand women die worldwide from complications of pregnancy, with 99% of them from undeveloped countries. These claims have now been shown to be pure guesswork with no substantiation. The former head of UN statistics office, Dr. Joseph Chamie, gives us information. The WHO has stated that only 31 of 193 states internationally have reliable cause of death statistics, and close to two-thirds of all deaths in developing countries are unreported. Two years ago, the UN Population Division issued a report stating that more than one-third of the 204 countries or areas examined did not report deaths by cause, sex, and age even once. There has been no improvement noted in reporting since 1975. The above countries reporting "maternal mortality 2005" states that 99% of these half million deaths occur in developing countries. But given that these agencies themselves admit that this kind of data is all but impossible to get, it is evident that their claim of deaths is based on virtually no data whatsoever, and accordingly, should be almost completely ignored.
God Bless: Fr. Jerry, OMI

Frustrated by the long investigation into whether an intentional morphine overdose killed a Woodstock nursing home patient in 2006, the woman's relatives are seeking the release of medical records to try to get answers, their lawyer said Wednesday.
Comment: While it is true some patients death are hastened in hospice, nursing home, hospitals... what is also troubling is the great fear some physicians have with administering adequate morphine to manage pain – that they will be accused of trying or succeeding to kill a patient, thus they withhold such medications – of course the patient suffers needlessly. It is so important to inform loved ones that properly given, pain meds are given in increments, allowing the patient to eventually receive very high mgs of morphine to help bring comfort without killing them. – Cheryl, CHN

Human beings, given the right support, tend to rise to meet high expectations. Chastity is difficult, but so is most of what is truly worthwhile in life. It is time for all of us, schools and parents, to raise the bar.

Item #5. The Holy Grail Of Reprogramming: A New Era For Stem Cells?
Two papers, one by a Japanese group, and another by an American group, have announced a genetic technique that produces stem cells without destroying (or using) any human embryos. In other words, the kind of stem cell usually obtained by destroying embryos appears to be available another way. All that is required is to transfer four genes into the skin cells, triggering them to convert into pluripotent stem cells. It has been called "biological alchemy," something like turning lead into gold. Many are hailing "cellular reprogramming" as a breakthrough of epic proportions, the stuff that Nobel prizes are made of, a kind of Holy Grail in biomedical research.

Item #6. Anti-Catholicism At March For Life?
After my last post about whether young people increasingly are pro-life, several readers responded to my statement that the March for Life resembled a "gigantic Catholic pep rally." There was no real disagreement about this assertion. So why write about this? Because a story in the San Francisco Chronicle, about the West Coast March for Life, should remind reporters of the latent hostility of some Americans toward Catholics. (And in a related matter, ESPN anchors are not immune to the disease, either.)

Item #7. Marriage's Little Secret: It Works
When I saw the results of the British Social Attitudes report last week, it occurred to me how difficult it is to keep a long-term relationship going in these turbulent times. The report, which has been running since 1983, is significant because it has proved to be a good barometer of social changes and informs social policy. This year it tells us that married couples are no longer seen as the "norm" and that two-thirds of people see marriage and cohabitation as indistinguishable. Most people now see a wedding as an excuse for a party rather than as a declaration of lifelong commitment.

Item #8. Men No Longer Needed?: Scientists Use Female Adult Stem Cells To Create "Female Sperm"
"'Female sperm', 'male eggs' and 'same-sex reproduction' - whether these terms fill you with hope or disgust, a reproductive revolution is already in progress," begins a recent New Scientist report on some of the most bizarre and disturbing scientific research being conducted by stem cell scientists. "In a handful of labs across the world, biologists are trying to make genetically male cells develop into eggs, and female cells into sperm. If successful, their efforts might one day allow lesbian and gay couples to have children that are genetically their own," the report continues.
Scientists at Newcastle upon Tyne University in the U.K. claim to have already used adult stem cells to create primitive sperm, reports New Scientist. Karim Nayernia, a stem-cell biologist at Newcastle, made adult stem cells derived from male bone marrow develop into spermatogonia, and then coaxed the spermatogonia to undergo meisois, thereby becoming mature sperm with sufficient genetic information to impregnate a human egg.

Item #10. British Report Shows Dozens Of Babies Left To Die After Live Birth Abortions
A report from Britain shows that 66 babies were born alive in one year alone after abortions done with public money under the nation's health care system. The babies were routinely left to die after their premature birth and some survived for as long as 10 hours afterwards.
According to the report, the babies were in the latter stages of pregnancy and were not aborted with a standard surgical abortion procedure.
Instead, the British National Health Service says women were given drugs to soften their cervix and had labour induced to birth the child so prematurely that there is no way to provide enough care for the child to live.
After birth, the babies received no medical care or attention, the report indicated.

14. Luxembourg May Become Third EU Country To Legalize Euthanasia – February 20, 2008
Comment from Alex Schadenberg, Chairperson of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition - International
Everyone needs to contact Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's office and state that: "the legalization of euthanasia in Luxembourg is a direct threat to the lives of Luxembourg's most vulnerable citizens, people with disabilities, the frail elderly, the chronically ill, and people who experience depression; need their lives protected and not threatened by legalized euthanasia."
"Vulnerable people become highly dependent on others for their basic care. Therefore no safeguard can effectively protect the lives of vulnerable people against abuses of the law. Vulnerable people in Luxembourg need excellent pain management and end-of-life care and not death.
The euthanasia bill has passed first reading by a vote of 30 to 26 and euthanasia will be legalized once it has passed second reading. Every member of the ruling Christian Social Party needs to vote against the euthanasia bill to ensure that it still be defeated on second reading. Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker is the leader of the ruling Christian social party.
Contact Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's office at: E-mail: ministere.etat@me.etat.lu or Fax: 011-352-46-17-20
Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Prime-Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.
February 20, 2008
Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition - International is composed of groups and individuals from across the world who oppose the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide.
It is a grave error for Luxembourg to legalize euthanasia because it will result in a direct threat to your most vulnerable citizens and it will put a black mark on your worldwide image as a caring nation.
Many people promote euthanasia as a freedom of the individual, but it is in fact a direct threat to the most vulnerable people in your country. People with disabilities, the frail elderly, the chronically ill and people who experience depression will feel undue pressure by others, to "volunteer" by a law that allows the direct termination of their lives.
Vulnerable people are those who become highly dependent upon others for their basic care. These people need laws that protect their lives. No safeguards can effectively protect the lives of vulnerable people based on the very nature of their dependency.
This bill allows people who have "grave and incurable" conditions to be euthanized. Grave is a subjective term and there are many incurable conditions that would not normally be associated with dying, that would qualify for euthanasia. This leads us to question whether the supposed safeguards are actually intended to be effective provisions.
The national commission that will be established to check each case to ensure that the law is being properly followed is not a safeguard either. After-the-death reporting does not protect the lives of vulnerable Luxembourg citizens.
Vulnerable people in Luxembourg need excellent pain, symptom management and end-of-life care and not death by euthanasia.
Please urge that every member of your party votes against the legalization of euthanasia in Luxembourg at second reading.
Yours Sincerely, Alex Schadenberg; Chairperson - Euthanasia Prevention Coalition International.
15. Paul Ranalli, Why I Am Not An Abortion Doctor – February 7, 2008
Posted: February 07, 2008, 1:00 PM by Dan Goldbloom Paul Ranalli
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/tags/Paul+Ranalli/default.aspx
On Monday, the National Post printed the transcript of a speech delivered recently by Garson Romalis, a Canadian abortion doctor who has shown remarkable personal courage in pursuing the practice of his choice — abortion — despite two violent physical attacks against him in 1994 and 2000. Dr. Henry Morgentaler, similarly, has endured many public protests and several jail terms in his successful quest to change the face of medicine and Canadian society. I am not certain I would be so steadfast in my belief in the face of such trauma.
I happen to disagree with what they are doing. I also condemn the personal threats and attacks on them by a radical few whose actions are the antithesis of promoting life and have left a blot on the mainstream pro-life movement. This is a blot that abortion advocates — and their supporters in much of the media — have exploited repeatedly to try to silence the reasonable moral arguments against abortion and its unrestrained practise in Canada today. The “violence” has stopped. Indeed, recent uncivil actions all seem to be on the pro-choice side: the trashing of a peaceful pro-life display at a B.C. university, and the recent defacing of pro-life bus shelter posters in Hamilton, Ont., which had the audacity to show a pregnant woman.
Following the 1988 Supreme Court Morgentaler decision that struck down Canada’s old abortion law, abortion advocates imagined a new medical nirvana in which fired-up young doctors, including the many women who now form a majority of many medical school classes, would flood to the clinics and hospitals to fill the abortion doctor vacancies. After all, the Romalis and Morgentaler generation is now greying and could use an infusion of troops.
But that never happened.
To explain this fact, abortion proponents often cite the threat of violence. But this tactic is becoming increasingly threadbare. Moreover, doctors’ reluctance to become abortion specialists can no longer be traced to any legal threat, as there is no law against the practice. In fact, most Canadian abortions are covered by Medicare.
No, the pro-choice movement refuses to confront the main reason doctors do not gravitate to performing abortions: They don’t like to kill. Even putting aside “pro-life” doctors, many of those physicians who would nominally sign off, as “pro-choice” would prefer that someone else perform abortions.
Abortion advocates bemoan a “lack of access” to abortion. Some of it is a less than honourable attempt to politicize the well-known limitations of our public health system. (For example, they point to a lack of access to abortion in P.E.I., a largely rural province that lacks many different types of specialized services.) No, the real concern behind the lack of access talk is that they know there are not enough young doctors with the unique zeal of the old lions like Romalis and Morgentaler.
Even if many young doctors do not possess strong moral qualms about killing the unborn, they likely see abortion as outside the medical mainstream in a number of other ways. Doctors who exclusively practise abortion are still not popular within the profession. And the procedure is used as a weapon of genocide against female foetuses in a number of ethnic communities in Canada, an especially bitter truth for feminists to swallow.
While I realize the practise of abortion is not going to go away anytime soon, the real question now is why there are no limits on the practise in this country. To put it in the language of “rights,” so favoured by those who oppose any limits on abortion, why is there no right to foetal protection at any stage in pregnancy? Dr. Romalis hearkens back to the 1960 complications of septic abortion. I would go back a little further, to 1490, when our current legal understanding of foetal personhood (the “born-alive” rule) was encoded.
Dr. Romalis closes by recounting the story of a female medical student who came up to him to thank him for performing an abortion on her some years earlier. She said, “If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t be here now.” For balance, I would ask about the many future women doctors who were aborted in the womb. To quote Robert Kennedy: “I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.”

Please Sign And Circulate Unborn Victims Of Crime Petition: Send In By Feb. 29
Dear Pro-Life Supporter,
As you may know a very, very important vote is coming up in Parliament on the protection of unborn children. I refer to Bill C-484, which would protect unborn children who are killed or injured when their mothers are violently attacked. If passed this would be Canada's first legal recognition of the unborn as children. It could set the stage for future protection of children from abortion.
This bill will be voted on by March 5. Attached is a Petition, which I urge you to sign and circulate among friends, church groups, etc. Then send it in to Parliament no later than Feb. 29 when debate on the bill will begin. Politicians are very sensitive to the voice of the people; we need to let our voices be heard!
You can send the signed petition to your own MP at the address on the bottom of the Petition, OR you can send it to the bill's sponsor, Ken Epp - same address. No postage required.
Thank you very much!
I have provided lots of information below on the bill. For much more see Ken Epp's website: www.kenepp.com/

Victim's sister presses for change; Slain teacher's family backs federal Unborn Victims of Crime Bill
SURREY I The sister of slain teacher Manjit Panghali is seeking support for proposed federal legislation that would make it an offence to harm or kill unborn babies during attacks on their mothers.
Jasmin Bhambra wants people to sign a petition to Edmonton MP Ken Epp, who is advocating for the Unborn Victims of Crime Bill, which she said is scheduled for debate on Feb. 29.
The petition at www.manjitpanghali.org, calls for unborn babies who are injured or killed in attacks on their moms to be recognized as separate from their mothers and for two charges to be laid against an offender, rather than one.
The petition states that the death an unborn baby "violates the woman's right to protect and give life to her child."
At the moment, Canada has no such law in place. Panghali was four months pregnant with her second child when she was murdered in October 2006 and her body set alight. She was found days later on Deltaport Way.
Her husband, Mukhtiar Singh Panghali, has been charged with her murder.
Bhambra said her family and other victims' families want to see "justice served for the unborn victim as well."
She has since gained full custody of Panghali's daughter and said "I see my sister in her." She noted she would have had another niece or nephew to remember her sister by.
"That's a life that's been taken away," she said. "There's no punishment for that?"
The push for federal legislation was launched by Aydin Cocelli, the brother-in-law of Aysun Sesen, a pregnant Toronto woman murdered in October.
Bhambra said the more families who speak out in favour of such legislation; the greater the chance there is to move this bill forward.
The proposed bill is similar to the American Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
Unborn Victims Of Crime Act – http://crcvc.ca/enewsletter/jan_08/story04.html
When Mary Talbot's 27-year-old daughter, Olivia, was murdered, Mary not only lost her youngest daughter, but a grandson as well. Olivia was 27-weeks pregnant at the time of her murder. A similar tragedy occurred in October in Toronto when Aysun Sesen, 7 months pregnant, was stabbed to death. Aysun's baby, Gul, also died in the attack. The families of these victims are actively campaigning to change Canadian law in order to recognize unborn children as secondary victims of crime when their mothers are murdered.
"My grandson was murdered. The Canadian Government does not recognize this as a crime," stated Mary Talbot in an article written about her daughter and grandson's murder. Olivia and her unborn son were shot and killed in the foyer of her Edmonton apartment in November 2005. "Olivia and her fiancé had been together for 2 years and were excited about the future. My daughter's joy was infectious and the whole family joined in to help with preparations and establishing a home for the three of them.... I lost a part of myself when this man gunned down my child and grandchild."
The man was found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Olivia, but no recognition was paid to the death of her unborn son. "Why shouldn't my grandson be treated with the same dignity and respect as a baby who would have lived for 2 seconds after being delivered? Why is he any less worthy?" The fact that Canadian law doesn't recognize the death of her grandson is "a slap in the face to me, his grandmother, to all his surviving relatives who loved him and anxiously awaited his birth, and more importantly an insult to Olivia's memory."
Conservative MP, Ken Epp, in response to the pleas of the victims' families and concerned Canadian citizens, introduced a Private Member's Bill on November 21, 2007, that would allow charges to be laid in the death of an unborn child if the mother is a victim of a crime. The bill is known as the Unborn Victims of Crime Act (C-484) and received its first hour of debate in the House of Commons on December 13, 2007, with the second hour of debate scheduled for February 29, with the vote at Second Reading scheduled for March 5. Further information about this bill can be found on Mr. Epp's website, www.kenepp.com .
A new law such as this would make a difference to families whose "pregnant daughter, or wife, or sister is brutally attacked," says Mary Talbot. "It would make a difference because those family members who survive such a heinous crime would know that they are not alone; that the rest of society recognizes just how much that baby meant to them. It would have made the world of difference to me, our family and to Olivia, if she had survived."
The CRCVC supports the Unborn Victims of Crime Act and recognizes the importance in holding accountable those who are guilty of harming or killing an unborn child during the commission of an offence against the mother.

Unborn Victims of Crime legislation – Q & A
(February 6, 2008)
Questions/concerns regarding Unborn Victims of Crime legislation:
http://www.kenepp.com/issues/insidepage.asp?ID=86
1. Why do we need this legislation?
Many Canadians are shocked to learn that when an attacker kills a pregnant woman's unborn child, no charge can be laid in that child's death, even when the attacker purposely intended to kill the child. This is because our criminal law does not recognize children as victims of crime until they are born alive. This gap in federal law gives rise to grave injustices.
In November 2005, Olivia Talbot of Edmonton who was 27 weeks pregnant with her son, Lane Jr., was shot three times in the abdomen and twice in the head by a long-time friend. No charge could be laid in the death of Baby Lane. Another pregnant Edmonton woman, Liana White, was slain by her husband in the summer of 2005—again no charges could be laid in her baby's death. In March of this year, a man from Surrey, BC, Mukhtiar Panghali was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife Manjit Panghali who was 4 months pregnant at the time. Roxanne Fernando from Winnipeg was beaten to death in February 2007 by a youth for refusing to have an abortion. Last month, Aysun Sesen from Toronto was seven months pregnant when she was repeatedly stabbed in the abdomen. Her husband has been charged with murder in her death. In all of these cases, there has been no recognition of a crime against these women's unborn children.
Clearly there are two victims in these types of crimes, and the public recognizes this. An Environics poll commissioned by LifeCanada released last month showed that 72% of Canadians—and 75% of women—support a law that would make it a separate crime to kill a foetus during an attack on a pregnant woman. [1]
The grieving families of the victims have made impassioned pleas to their Members of Parliament and the Government to enact legislation to recognize unborn children as separate crime victims when they are harmed or killed during criminal attacks against their mothers.
2. Isn't this just a backdoor attempt to re-criminalize abortion?
The Unborn Victims of Crime Act has nothing to do with elective abortion. This Bill is totally focused on protecting the choice of a pregnant woman to carry her baby to term and to give her child life. Elective abortion is explicitly excluded. The Bill uses terminology that describes the injury or death of the unborn child during the commission of a crime against the mother. Elective abortion is not a crime in Canada. The Bill goes on with explicit language: "For greater certainty, this section does not apply in respect of … conduct relating to the lawful termination of the pregnancy of the mother of the child to which the mother has consented." The Unborn Victims of Crime Act addresses the situation where a third party harms or kills a woman's unborn child while committing an offence against her – action to which she has clearly not consented. This legislation explicitly excludes consensual abortion. This legislation honours a woman's 'right to choose' to give birth to her baby.
3. If the Criminal Code is changed to recognize the unborn child as a human being, then wouldn't abortion become illegal?
The Unborn Victims of Crime Act does not change the definition of "human being" in the Criminal Code. "Human being" is defined in the Criminal Code as follows:
223. (1) A child becomes a human being within the meaning of this Act when it has completely proceeded, in a living state, from the body of its mother…."
The Criminal Code defines homicide as follows:
222. (1) A person commits homicide when, directly or indirectly, by any means, he causes the death of a human being.
So in today's criminal law, legal protection is afforded the child only once it becomes a "human being," that is, once it has been born alive. The Unborn Victims of Crime Act amends the Criminal Code so that legal protection will not only be given to "human beings" as defined by the Criminal Code, but also to unborn children who are harmed or killed during the commission of an offence against their mothers. The amendment does not change the definition of "human being." What it does is it offers protection to the unborn child in a very particular circumstance, despite the definition of "human being."
If an amendment were made to the Criminal Code which changed the definition of "human being" to include unborn children, then that would affect the abortion issue because then an abortion would be considered "homicide" under section 222 (1). But that is not what the Unborn Victims of Crime Act does. It does not redefine "human being" and so it does not affect abortion whatsoever. In fact, the Unborn Victims of Crime Act explicitly excludes abortion so that there can be no misunderstanding as to the intent of this amendment.
4. The Supreme Court of Canada has already said that the foetus is not a person, so wouldn't this law be unconstitutional?
One often hears the argument that the Supreme Court would not allow a foetus to have rights because it has said that a foetus is not a "person." It is true that the Courts have said that the foetus is not a person. But this is only because our existing law does not recognize the foetus as a person and the Courts were only interpreting existing law when they made their rulings. But the law can be changed. And that is the responsibility of Parliament, not the Courts, as the Supreme Court itself has said in a number of cases.
In the case of Sullivan and Lemay v. the Queen, 1991, two midwives were charged with criminal negligence causing death to the child of Jewel Voth. The baby was born dead. At issue in this case was whether a living child partially born was a "person" within the meaning of Section 203 of the Criminal Code, which states:
203 . Every one who by criminal negligence causes death to another person is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for life . (Emphasis added)
The Supreme Court ruled that the midwives could not be charged under this section, because the child was not considered a "person" for the purposes of the Criminal Code. Why did the Court say this? Because the word "person" is not defined in the Criminal Code, but "human being" is, (as discussed in response to the previous question) and the Court said that there was no reason to assume that "person" should mean anything different than "human being" and since "human being" is defined as a child who is born alive, then the child before birth, if not a "human being," is also not a "person." The Court was in no way saying that the law could not be changed to grant some rights to the foetus.
In the case of Winnipeg Child and Family Services v DFG, 1997, involving a glue-sniffing pregnant woman, the issue at hand was whether child protective services could force a pregnant woman into custody in order to protect the unborn child. As in the previous case cited, the Supreme Court said that according to the existing law, the unborn child has no rights and therefore the woman could not be forced into custody. The Court stated: "The law of Canada does not recognize the unborn child as a legal person possessing rights." The Court went on to ask, "At what stage would a foetus acquire rights?" The Court said that such "thorny moral and social issues…are better dealt with by elected legislators than the courts." (Emphasis added)
In Chantale Daigle v. Jean-Guy Tremblay, the Supreme Court again said it was up to Parliament to determine what level of protection to give the unborn child. The Court stated:
"The Court is not required to enter the philosophical and theological debates about whether or not a foetus is a person, but, rather, to answer the legal question of whether the Quebec legislature has accorded the foetus personhood… Decisions based upon broad social, political, moral and economic choices are more appropriately left to the legislature."(Emphasis added)
As the above cases illustrate, the Supreme Court has clearly stated that the existing law does not offer legal protection for the foetus, and that it is not up to the courts to change the law in order to offer this protection—it is the job of those elected to Parliament. The Unborn Victims of Crime Bill addresses this issue in one very specific way—by extending protection to the unborn child who is injured or killed when the mother is the victim of a crime.
5. If the foetus is not a human being or person, then how can you create an offence for killing it?
The criminal law can be used to protect 'non-persons' and to prescribe sanctions against those who violate the law. For example, animals are protected by Cruelty to Animals legislation. An entity does not have to be defined as a 'person' or a 'human being' in order to receive protection in criminal law. The Assisted Human Reproduction Act offers some protection to human embryos even though embryos are not considered 'persons' in our criminal law. As the Law Reform Commission of Canada stated in its working paper, Crimes Against the Foetus: "… to decide whether to give the foetus criminal law protection we don't need to decide if it is a person… There is nothing which limits criminal law protection to persons." (p. 34)
6. Why do we need to recognize the unborn child as a separate victim? Our criminal justice system already takes into account aggravating factors, so why can't the pregnancy be treated as an aggravating factor?
First of all, aggravating factors are taken into account only for sentencing purposes, not when determining what offence was committed in the first place. The issue here is not just about how severe the sentence should be; it is about creating an offence specifically for the harm done to the unborn child in recognition of the fact that the child is also a victim of a crime when it is harmed or killed during an attack on the mother.
Even though treating pregnancy as an aggravating factor would serve to acknowledge that pregnancy makes a woman more vulnerable, it would send the message that it is only the physical condition of pregnancy that is relevant and that the prenatal human life itself has no intrinsic value. Any pregnant woman who survives a violent attack but loses her preborn child—a child she wants and loves—will grieve for that child, and no one can say she grieves for that child any less, simply because that child had not yet been born. Failure to recognize these children as crime victims amounts to telling these women that they lost nothing of value when their children were killed.
7. We have concurrent sentencing in Canada, so a person who kills a pregnant woman and her unborn child will not serve any more time in prison than if he had just killed the woman, so what's the point of charging the woman's attacker with an additional offence?
In existing criminal law, if the pregnant woman survives the attack but the child dies, there is no murder charge—the offender is charged only with assault on the woman. But under the Unborn Victims of Crime Act, the offender would be charged not only with assault on the woman, but also with the new offence in the death of the child.
Secondly, if a mother and her already born child were attacked and intentionally killed, or if a person opened fire in a public place and killed multiple people, the offender would be charged with multiple counts of murder, not just one, regardless of our concurrent sentencing system. The point is that our criminal law recognizes each of these victims, and recognition is not dependent on whether or not more jail time would be served. In this respect, Unborn Victims of Crime legislation is no different from how our existing criminal law handles multiple victims.
And finally, the reason for creating such a law is not primarily to increase the amount of time the offender will remain in prison. Rather, the purpose is to recognize that there are two victims in such crimes, the mother and the child. Such a law sends a strong message that prenatal human life matters. Our current law which affords no protection whatsoever to the unborn child amounts to telling these abusers that since society places no value on that human life growing inside the woman, why should he? If the state has no interest in protecting the unborn child, why should he? If the state will turn a blind eye to a pre-meditated attack on a woman's unborn child—even when the attacker has the full intention of causing the death of that child—then we are effectively telling the pregnant woman, when she is at her most vulnerable, that it is her responsibility alone to help her child survive, that she will receive no help from the state. By our failure to legally protect these children from acts of violence committed against their mothers, by our failure as a society to recognize any worth whatsoever in the preborn child, we are only encouraging abusive behaviour towards pregnant women. And we must all share in the blame for the consequences—children maimed or killed in their mother's womb. As for the family who is left behind to try to cope, their grief goes unvalidated – they try desperately to mourn a death that society refuses to recognize, because a living, human child, they are told, did not exist in the eyes of the law.
Remember – all of this has to do with a woman who is exercising her freedom of choice to bring her child to term in safety. In anticipating the birth of her baby, she has become emotionally attached to it, and has experienced the greatest violation of her right and freedom possible – the criminal assault and death or injury to her child that she loves and wants to protect.
8. Some people have claimed that this type of law would be used to target pregnant women, citing US examples of women with drug abuse problems being prosecuted under "unborn victims of violence" laws in the US as evidence to support this claim. Is this true?
Firstly, Bill C-484 could never be used to prosecute pregnant women because it applies only during the commission of an offence against the woman, and, "for greater certainty" the bill states that it "does not apply in respect of… any act or omission by the mother of the child."
Secondly, anyone who claims that similar laws in the US have been used to target pregnant women has been seriously misinformed.
For example, the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) claims that" Pregnant women have been arrested under U.S. foetal homicide laws… The worst offender is South Carolina, where between 50 and 100 pregnant women with drug abuse problems have been arrested under its foetal homicide law."[2]
In making this claim, ARCC references articles on the website of the National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW):
http://www.advocatesforpregnantwomen.org/issues/unborn_victims_of_violence_act/
But there is misleading information in those articles because, although they refer to unborn victims of violence / foetal homicide laws, the cases they cite have nothing to do with these types of statutes, but rather with laws having to do with child abuse and endangerment (for example, prenatal drug use).
In the Whitner case cited by NAPW, for example, a pregnant woman was convicted under the child abuse and endangerment statute in the South Carolina Children's Code because her baby was born with crack cocaine in her system due to the mother's ingestion of this substance during the third trimester of her pregnancy. In the State v. McKnight case cited by NAPW, the pregnant woman was convicted of homicide by child abuse following a stillbirth caused by cocaine use.
Whitner and McKnight were prosecuted and convicted because in each case the court found that the child abuse/endangerment laws applied not just to born children but to viable foetuses as well. This is because South Carolina's case law recognized a viable foetus as a "person" in some contexts (for example, the 1984 State v. Horne case referred to in one of the articles you referenced on NAPW's website). But the case law of other US States has not recognized the foetus as a "person" and so a pregnant mother's conduct would not result in criminal charges in those cases. For example, "Massachusetts law permits homicide prosecutions of third parties who kill viable foetuses," however "a Massachusetts trial court has held that a mother pregnant with a viable foetus is not criminally liable for transmission of cocaine to the foetus. See Commonwealth v. Pellegrini." [3]
When comparing the types of laws used in the above cited cases to bill C-484, ARCC is comparing apples and oranges. C-484 applies only in the commission of an offence against the mother and the bill states "for greater certainty" that it does not apply to acts or omissions by the mother. These stipulations do not exist in South Carolina's child abuse and endangerment / homicide by child abuse statutes. The intent of C-484 is to protect the unborn child from third-parties, during the commission of an offence against the woman.
The statute that would be the proper subject matter for comparison—South Carolina's Unborn Victims of Violence Law (in which a third party is held criminally responsible for harming or killing a woman's unborn child during the commission of an offence against her )—did not come into effect until 2006, years after the McKnight and Whitner cases!
The Whitner case occurred in 1997; the McKnight case, in 2003. This is proof that these other cases cited by NAPW and relied on by ARCC had nothing to do with South Carolina's Unborn Victims of Violence Law. They had to do with laws that serve a completely different purpose than does bill C-484.
Our research (done in conjunction with the Library of Parliament [4]) has not turned up anything to substantiate ARCC's claims, nor has research conducted by Americans United for Life. [5]

Murder renews debate on life of foetus; Pregnant Victim; Both died, but no law allows for additional charge
The recent murder of a pregnant Toronto woman resulting in the death of her unborn child has rekindled debate on whether a foetus should be recognized as a person.
Turan Cocelli, 29, was charged on Tuesday with killing his 25-year-old wife, Aysun Sesen, but no charges were laid in the death of the seven-month-old foetus.
Ms. Sesen had an emergency caesarean section when she was rushed to hospital, but the child was stillborn.
Under the Criminal Code, a child is only considered a human being when it has emerged from the mother's body alive.
Alberta Conservative MP Leon Benoit introduced a private member's bill last year that would make it a separate criminal offence to harm a foetus when the mother is assaulted or murdered, but the bill was defeated in the House of Commons.
In August, a Nova Scotia man was charged with attempting to murder his pregnant ex-girlfriend but no charges were laid in the attempted murder of the foetus.
In California, the high-profile 2002 murder of Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant, drew international attention when 32-year-old husband Scott Peterson was convicted of two counts of murder -- one for his wife and another for the unborn child.
Thirty-five U.S. states currently recognize the foetus as a crime victim in homicide or feticide instances. In Canada, however, the issue from the perspective of both sides is whether a foetus can be given personhood status in homicides without touching on abortion issues.
While those in favour of abortion rights worry about how that right might be hampered by any acknowledgment that a foetus is human, antiabortion advocates see controversial cases such as these as part of the continuum of not recognizing unborn children legally.
The issue of whether lines should be drawn when the foetus reaches viability --is able to survive outside the uterus – is also hotly debated.
"If we take the position that the foetus is a separate person at viability then we open up all sorts of issues. All of a sudden, the woman is two separate persons," said Martha Shaffer, an associate law professor at the University of Toronto who specializes in family and criminal law. "Her liberty and autonomy can be greatly curtailed in the interests of the foetus within her. If she's doing something that somebody decides to be contrary to the foetus’s interests, which could be eating too much sugar, exercising too hard, smoking or drinking, it's very dangerous to go down that route to say a woman is no longer a separate, independent person at a certain stage of pregnancy.
"I can understand why not being able to charge the husband with two murders as somehow not reflecting the severity of what he did," said Prof. Shaffer.
"On the other hand, viewing this pregnant woman as two separate persons is potentially more dangerous than saying he can be prosecuted with the murder of the woman here, and that will be a sufficient punishment for what he has done."
The issue has taken on greater significance in recent years with advances in medical technology that have enabled foetuses to survive out of the womb long before 40 weeks' gestation.
Canadian ethicist Margaret Somerville, who is also the founding director of the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill University, said that if she could change current laws, Mr. Tocelli would also be facing charges in the murder of the unborn child. "I'd change the law, not so much that I think these cases are frequent, I'd change it because we're being ostriches with our head in the sand, pretending that the baby doesn't exist," said Prof. Somerville.
"It's a separate question in terms of what we'll do in protecting it, where we'll draw the lines in terms of protection as opposed to a woman's right to what she wants to do. Not to draw any lines, which is the case at the moment, or to draw the lines pretending we're not dealing with a human life, warps our moral intuitions."
Anti-abortion advocates agree. "Obviously what we're skirting around is that it would affect the abortion issue in this country," said Jakki Jeffs, executive director of the group Alliance For Life Ontario. "This isn't the first case of a pregnant woman and the child being killed at the same time in Canada, so until the law is changed, until the discrimination against the unborn is changed, their deaths, even in this way, murder, will never be recognized."
Advocates of the right to abortion, however, believe that by recognizing the foetus as a person, even only in cases where the mother had no control over her child, could result in anti-abortion legislation.
"The thing that we're concerned about is that issues like this can sometimes be used for political reasons and potentially be used to, in the end, restrict a woman's right to abortion," said Carolyn Egan of the Ontario Coalition of Abortion Clinics.
"I think we would support the law as it stands, and in this case, feel confident that the courts will deal appropriately with the crime that took place."

17. Top "Gay" Organization Comes Clean, "HIV Is A Gay Disease" – February 14, 2008
Washington, February 14, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a public statement last Friday, Matt Foreman, outgoing Executive Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, rattled the homosexual activist community by joining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pro-family organizations and a growing number of homosexual activists willing to admit that homosexual behaviour is both extremely high-risk and primarily responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS in the U.S.
Addressing the topic of AIDS, Foreman drastically deviated from the "gay" lobby's party line by admitting, "Internally, when these numbers come out, the 'established' gay community seems to have a collective shrug as if this isn't our problem. Folks, with 70 percent of the people in this country living with HIV being gay or bi, we cannot deny that HIV is a gay disease. We have to own that and face up to that."
A little over a year ago, Lorri Jean, CEO of the Los Angeles-based Gay and Lesbian Center, similarly shocked the "gay" community by stating that, "HIV is a Gay Disease. Own it. End it."
Foreman's admission comes on the heels of a letter from Matt Barber, Concerned Women for America's (CWA) Policy Director for Cultural Issues, inviting Foreman and other homosexual activists to work together in discouraging homosexuals from engaging in the high-risk behaviours researchers recently determined are responsible for the epidemic spread of a potentially deadly strain of staph infection among certain segments of the "gay" community. The CDC has acknowledged that many of those same high-risk behaviours, such as male-male anal sex, are chiefly responsible for spreading HIV/AIDS.
Matt Barber addressed Foreman's admission: "It's extremely encouraging to see Matt Foreman, a homosexual activist who has for so long been in denial about the dangers of the lifestyle he has promoted, publicly coming to terms with the undeniable perils of that lifestyle.
"I only hope he will now stop promoting homosexual conduct and push for other liberal elites, especially those running our public schools, to do the same. Educators must truthfully address the 'gay' lifestyle's potentially deadly consequences.
"It's criminally reckless for the National Education Association and liberal educators to put political correctness and a deceptive political agenda above the lives, health and well-being of America's children. The evidence is there for all to see. 'Gayness' is not about 'who you are,' it's about 'what you do.' The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has now, in effect, acknowledged that reality. Their honesty is refreshing and unexpected," concluded Barber.

Commentary - Why are only leftist Christians inclusive?
One of the most unhelpful myths floating around in political circles these days is that conservative Christians are only interested in a political agenda that serves their own interests - while liberal "Christians" have an inclusive agenda that embraces others. I want to explore the possible source of this myth, but first, here’s a quote from one of the most explicit expressions of this notion that I have seen in polite society. It comes from "Making Faith Public: How Faith-Based Social Justice Groups in Regina use Religious Resources,"
http://www.christiangovernment.ca/12all/lt/t_go.php?i=111&e=MjYxNg==&l=-http--www.uregina.ca/sipp/publications.html - By Peter Bisson. Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy Public Policy Paper 53, January 2008. This publication is produced under the auspices of the University of Regina.
"In the context of the apparent public resurgence of religion over the past few decades, at least as covered in the North American and European press, the involvement of religion in politics can be a frightening proposition. For people of European background and culture, it can raise the spectre of the religious wars fought in Europe in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and cause them to wonder if the solution to these and related conflicts is under threat today. This solution was the privatization of religion, that is, the removal of religion from an explicit guiding role in public life, allowing it to remain active primarily or only in the private realm of family life and personal conscience.
"Currently, it seems that at least some religions are resisting privatization. But, as the example of the newsletter Witness to Justice suggests, many, if not most, instances of religions seeking to affect the social and political aspects of life and public policy are not violent or fundamentalist. Many of them are not politically conservative. Not all religious activists are bent on changing, at all costs, the world according to their religion. There are many religious activists located at various points along the political spectrum who seek change not only for their co-religionists, but in a disinterested manner for the welfare of all, and who seek change not necessarily in their own image, but in partnership with groups of varied religious and ideological commitments, provided they share some form of commitment to the common good or to general human welfare, loosely defined.
"This paper will examine this form of public expression or religious action. Such socially engaged, politically left-wing, religiously inclusive activism has grown since the 1960s, but has received little attention in the media, and is only beginning to in scholarship. This paper will address this lack."
So, according to these people, it is liberal "Christianity" that contributes to the common good or to the general human welfare.
Meanwhile, conservative Christians are consistently subject to the accusations that they are advancing a narrow, self-serving agenda.
No doubt, a primary reason for this myth is the fact that those who don't agree with conservatives want to marginalise their views and positions. But why has this rhetoric gained such a foothold in the cultural consciousness such that a significant percentage of the general population seems to think that the correct definition of marriage, protection of unborn human life and chastity are narrow, parochial interests rather than values and principles that are beneficial to all people?
Christian conservatives probably have to take a good deal of the blame for not being prepared to effectively counter these claims. Sometimes, we've attempted to respond to emotion-laden rhetoric with dry, analytical counter-claims. Which style of communication, over time, is going to end up settling into people's consciences and thought patterns?
Worldview Christianity
We may have also contributed to this perspective by the way we have focused on abortion and family and marriage issues rather than presenting a face to the world that was more holistic. We know that these "social conservative" issues are extremely important. And most of us don't have the energy to tackle everything. But theologically conservative Christians should also remember that we own the legacy
http://www.christiangovernment.ca/12all/lt/t_go.php?i=111&e=MjYxNg==&l=-http--www.christianworldviewnetwork.com/article.php/3096/Ingrid_Schlueterthroughout history of Christian leadership in works of charity, addressing poverty, homelessness, the need for medical care, orphans and widows, etc. As pastor and radio commentator Paul Edwards recently wrote
http://www.christiangovernment.ca/12all/lt/t_go.php?i=111&e=MjYxNg==&l=-http--www.townhall.com/Columnists/PaulEdwards/2008/02/12/defining_evangelicalism_down--Q-page--E-full--A-comments--E-true, "The Association of Evangelical Relief and Development Organizations claim 64 such organizations as members, including World Vision, Compassion International, Samaritan’s Purse, and Mercy Ships."
Christianity is also a worldview, so while some issues are of more import than others at any given time, they fit within a bigger picture, and the big picture is also important - if only (but not only) to demonstrate that Christianity is a rational, intellectually coherent religion and not just a bunch of hot-button views hurriedly strung-together by a bunch of disgruntled old fools. There are ways of communicating this accurate picture of who conservative Christians are without watering down our commitment to key issues. It's too bad we haven't spent much time figuring out how to do that.
The Christian left often attacks conservative Christians for not adding issues like poverty and HIV/AIDS to our political agendas. The fact is that we have a solid track record of dealing with those issues on the ground, solving those problems one real human being at a time, rather than politicizing them in the hopes of attracting large amounts of taxpayer dollars to "sexy" projects that end up producing poor results on the ground. Real ministry can also keep the Gospel central, as many of these ministries do. But when you politicize charity, you do so often because you have already switched your religious allegiance from Messiah-Jesus to Messiah-Civil-Government.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this commentary…

State vs. Church: What Christians Can Do to Save Canada from Liberal Tyranny
"State vs. Church"
http://www.christiangovernment.ca/12all/lt/t_go.php?i=111&e=MjYxNg==&l=-http--www.christiangovernment.ca/book_press.php is the only book in print today making the case for Christian government in Canada. "State vs. Church" uses many real examples to warn about the danger and tyranny of Secular Humanist "theocracy." It demonstrates that the best alternative - the only liberty-oriented alternative – to Secular Humanism is Christian government. Visit the website

19. Woman Diagnosed As "Brain Dead" Walks And Talks After Awakening – February 15, 2008
By Hilary White
Lake Elmo, Minnesota, February 15, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – 65-year-old Raleane "Rae" Kupferschmidt's relatives were told by doctors that she was "brain dead" after she had suffered a massive cerebral haemorrhage in mid-January. Her family had taken her home to die and were in the process of grieving and planning her funeral when she awoke and was rushed back to hospital.
In accordance with her own wishes, doctors had removed Rae's breathing tube and were waiting for her to die. She was taken home from the hospital, and while friends and family gathered to say a last good bye, Kupferschmidt's daughter Lisa Sturm used an ice cube to wet her mother's dry lips. When her mother sucked on the ice cube, she thought it was only an instinctive reaction. She said, "I knew suckling is a very basic brain stem function, so I didn't get real excited. But when I did it again she just about sucked the ice cube out of my hand, and I looked at my aunt and said, 'Did you see that?'"
"So I leaned down and asked, 'Mom... Mom, are you in there?'" Sturm said. "And when she shook her head and mouthed, 'Yes,' we all just about fell over."
Rae was rushed back to the hospital and underwent surgery to drain the blood clot from her skull. After surgery, she recovered her strength and is now undergoing physical therapy and can walk with the aid of a walker. Doctors expect her to be walking on her own within weeks. Rae says she does not remember anything during her coma.
"I still don't know what my task is here on this Earth, but I know God's not done with me yet. How else could you explain everything that has happened to me?" Rae said.
She told family that she had seen angels in her room. "I said these angels are not here to take me home to my father. They're here to help me, to help me get over this."
"Brain death" or "death by neurological criteria," is a common diagnosis of patients who are said to be in an irreversible coma, sometimes referred to as a "persistent vegetative state" (PVS). Physicians and bioethicists who support the brain death criteria claim that such a diagnosis is reliable and means that a patient is beyond any hope of recovery.
Under new bioethics criteria, "brain death" can be used as a condition under which organs are removed from a patient while his heart is kept beating. Organ transplant requires that tissue be recovered from donors as close to physical death as possible and physicians are under heavy pressure to procure more organs.
The fact that in many cases patients who have been unconscious, semi-conscious or severely neurologically disabled, such as Terri Schiavo, have been declared "brain dead" or "PVS" only to recover, has undermined public confidence in the medical system.
In the US in 2006, Terry Wallis, who experienced a car wreck in 1984, woke unexpectedly and began to recover after 19 years in a minimally conscious state. In 2005 in Italy, Salvatore Crisafulli woke from a coma he had suffered for two years. He had been declared "nearly dead" by doctors after a serious auto accident that left him unresponsive. In Poland in 2007, a railway worker astonished his family and doctors when he awoke spontaneously after 19 years.
Doctors at United Hospital said they are amazed by Rae Kupferschmidt's recovery. One told Good Morning America, "I've been here for ten years and I've never seen anything quite like this."
Rae told Good Morning America, "God's got something for me to do. When I learn it, I'll unfold it and follow it."
