2. Cardinal Ouellet Praises Humanae Vitae; Abortion the Consequence of the 'Culture of Contraception' – June 19, 2008

Says controversial encyclical "was not taught enough" and because "we have not followed it, we have seen the consequences." – By John-Henry Westen

QUEBEC CITY, June 19, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Quebec City Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Primate of Canada, is in the midst of hosting a massive international gathering of Catholics that was five years in the making – the International Eucharistic Congress. The Cardinal nevertheless took time to sit down with LifeSiteNews.com for an interview.

In keeping with the theme of the Congress, Ouellet spoke of the link he sees between the Eucharist and respect for human life, noting the fact that the Eucharistic Congress occurs just a month before the 40 th anniversary of Pope Paul VI's encyclical "Humane Vitae" ("On Human Life").

The controversial 1968 document was a restatement of the Church's official opposition to contraception, and a call for married couples to remain open to life. The document is now regarded as prophetic, having predicted with uncanny accuracy the progress of the Culture of Death and the devaluation of women that would follow the widespread acceptance of contraception.

Cardinal Ouellet said, "Humanae Vitae was a great document…People should reread it carefully and see how beautiful the description of human love is in this document."

"Openness to life," he said, "is the key of the document, that the act of mutual gift of the spouses must remain open to life."

The Primate of Canada told LifeSiteNews.com, "This message was not properly received by the population," adding, "it was also not taught enough."

"The consequences of the culture of contraception," he said, "are visible in the culture with abortion and with the question of marriage."

"I think we have to revisit it (Humanae Vitae) and reopen our hearts to the wisdom of this document."

Ouellet noted that Pope John Paul II, with the development and preaching of his theology of the body, "further developed the inner logic" of Humanae Vitae.

Tying the issue back to the Eucharist, the highest ranking Canadian prelate said, "Obviously the welcoming of the Risen Lord and the Gift of His Body calls for the respect of human life, and I think it will foster in the future more commitment for the respect of human life."

He concluded: "The anniversary of Humanae Vitae is an opportunity to discover that the Church was wise to reaffirm the value of human love and its openness to life. We have not followed it, we have seen the consequences, but there is still time to recapture the fruit."

With this interview Cardinal Ouellet is the second major Canadian prelate to speak out forcefully in support of Humanae Vitae, on this 40th anniversary year. The first was Ottawa Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, who said, "The encyclical (Humanae Vitae) gives the Church a deeper understanding into the beauty of married love and responsible parenthood. It offers a clearer understanding of the harm of contraception and the great value of Natural Family Planning (NFP). Further, it challenges married couples, healthcare professionals and clergy to live and teach these profound truths about human sexuality and dignity."

3. C-Fam Friday Fax – June 12, 2008

Friday Fax
 June 12, 2008 | Volume 11, Number 26

Dear Colleague,

We just discovered that the Friday Fax last Thursday only went out to less than a third of our subscribers. We are hereby resending it to everyone.

We report on the just-concluded United Nations HIV/AIDS conference – a confab where the loudest voices were those calling for legitimization of those very same risky practices that lead to the spread of the virus.

We also report on the Holy See’s honouring of the President of El Salvador, a nation where respect for human life in all stages is enshrined in the constitution.

Spread the word.

Yours sincerely,

Austin Ruse, President

Role of Family and Faith-Based Organizations Largely Ignored at UN AIDS Meeting

By Samantha Singson

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) The United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS took place at UN headquarters in New York this week to review progress made in fighting the global AIDS pandemic. The two-day meeting, which brought together members of government and civil society, was punctuated throughout by calls to end stigmatization and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS by expanding rights for “sexual minorities” and “commercial sex workers,” including decriminalization of laws prohibiting sodomy and prostitution.

At the opening panel discussion, a representative from UNAIDS, a joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, asserted that the international community “must move beyond the classical understanding” to include sexual minorities to reduce the transmission of HIV. Representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) representing "sex workers" and the "gay, lesbian, transgendered and transsexual community" pushed for legal recognition, with one stating that “denying aspects relating to gender identity adds to the spread of the infection.” Another NGO representative proclaimed “HIV is a virus, not a moral issue,” and that the UN should “abolish the laws that criminalize HIV transmission.”

While many of the registered civil society participants cheered these demands, several government delegations expressed concerns. The Egyptian delegation cautioned against using new terms that have no international legal basis, such as “sexual minorities,” and stated “that the international community should avoid the imposition of social concepts prevalent in certain countries on others regardless of the fact that each society has its own characteristics and specificities.”

Egypt also stressed “the importance of the faith-based approach in tackling the spread of infection.” Egypt credited its low level of HIV prevalence “mainly to the deeply-rooted cultural and social values that contribute to the control of extramarital relations between men and women according to divine religions.” At another meeting, the Zambian delegation warned against using a “one size fits all approach,” particularly in regards to "sex workers and sexual minorities." Zambia reminded participants of the important role and success that religion and faith-based organizations have had in the fight against AIDS.  Zambia’s representative stated that religion and faith-based prevention should take the concerns of sexual minorities into account, but urged that religious and moral teachings should not be stigmatized or overshadowed.

Qatar encouraged consideration of the frontline role of the family in caring for those suffering from HIV infection, noting that such a perspective was largely absent from the conference.  At the only event, which focused on the positive role of the family, Sharon Slater of Family Watch International met with anger and resistance when she drew a distinction between stigmatizing individuals with HIV, which she condemned, and stigmatizing high-risk behaviour, such as intravenous drug use and homosexual activity, which significantly contributes to the spread of HIV. In a separate meeting with pro-family representatives, the Ugandan ambassador touted the effectiveness of AIDS reduction programs that emphasized behavioural change, notably abstinence and fidelity, rather than simply relying on condom distribution.

An official chairman’s summary of all the discussions from the 2008 High Level Meeting on AIDS will be released in the coming weeks.

Leader of “Pro-Life Nation” Honoured
by Holy See at UN

By Piero A. Tozzi and Susan Yoshihara

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) At United Nations headquarters this week, President Elias Antonio Saca of El Salvador received the “Path to Peace” award in recognition of his commitment to the “development of peace in national and international arenas.”  Archbishop Celestino Migliore, apostolic nuncio and permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, bestowed the honour in his capacity as president of the Path to Peace Foundation.  The Path to Peace Foundation promotes initiatives of the Pope and the Holy See aimed at building “justice, charity and peace.”

President Saca was a media personality who gained the attention of El Salvador’s ARENA party and won the presidency in 2004.  According to the Path to Peace Foundation, he was recognized for implementing judicial and fiscal reform, as well as programs designed to eradicate poverty in order to help El Salvador rebuild society in a manner consistent with Catholic social principles.  After a bloody civil war, the country signed a peace agreement in 1992.

In his acceptance remarks, President Saca credited the “enormous contribution” of the Catholic Church to restoring peace and cited the 1983 visit of Pope John Paul II to the war-torn country as a pivotal event.  He also touted his administration’s policy of promoting a “solidarity network” in impoverished rural and urban areas, providing incentives so that poor families would send their children to school and obtain medical examinations.

The award however caused an “outcry,” according to Raul Gutierrez of the IPS news service.  Gutierrez reported that “Several Salvadoran Catholic organizations said they ‘regretted’ the foundation’s decision, in a letter to the Apostolic Nunciature in El Salvador.”  Gutierrez did not cite the names of the organizations but said they disagreed with the foundation’s assessment of the president’s achievements.  IPS news focuses on “civil society” and the “impact of globalization on the [global] South.”  Among its supporters are the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, organizations whose population control policies run counter to the strong pro-life laws of El Salvador, whose constitution protects life from conception.

El Salvador has come under heavy fire from abortion rights advocates and in the media in the last few years, fallout from which led to a major scandal at the New York Times.  In a story reported by LifeSite News, the Times published Jack Hitt’s April 2006 article, “Pro-Life Nation,” erroneously saying that a woman was serving a 30-year jail term for having undergone an illegal abortion.  The Times relied on a translator from a UN-accredited non-governmental organization called Ipas that promotes abortion and sells portable abortion devices over the telephone.

(C-FAM Friday Fax: UN NGO at the Center of New York Times Reporting Scandal) Due to the controversy the LifeSite News story caused, the New York Times was forced to admit it was wrong in an “editor’s note” but stopped short of calling it a “correction” or “retraction.”

Despite such pressure, El Salvador continues to maintain its protection for life in its various stages.  This week, all 84 Salvadoran legislators signed the “Yes to Life” statement – part of a campaign to promote respect for human life in Central America – condemning abortion as an “abominable crime” and affirming the duty of legislators to “unconditionally” defend life from conception to natural death.

4. Is The Human Embryo A Person? – June 20, 2008

Is The Human Embryo A Person? - Jim Hnatiuk Is The NS President And Deputy Leader Of The Christian Heritage Party Of Canada (CHP)

Weekly Press, Enfield N.S June 2008

Behind Politics – By Jim Hnatiuk

Is the human embryo a person? I believe it is. If the embryo is ruled to be a person then all other abortion arguments become groundless because a person is protected under the law.

Let me give you a hypothetical case: A husband and wife are planning to have a baby. Shortly after they make this decision tragically the woman is raped. A month later it is discovered that she is pregnant but they cannot be certain as to who the father is. They decide to have the baby. Eight months later a wonderful healthy baby boy is born. They are saddened by the news that the baby is the result of the rape. So I ask: “Would it make sense now to kill the baby?” Of course not, the baby is a ‘person’ and protected under the law.

In Canada alone, there are over 105,000 innocent "unborn persons" being put to death each year. Canadians are outraged that this non-person status of the unborn baby allows mothers the "choice" to destroy a little person, right up until full term. In Canada the doctor is allowed to kill the baby in the womb, right up to the moment of his or her birth. The doctor must insure the baby is dead before delivery otherwise they would be charged with manslaughter or worse should the baby survive even for a few seconds after being born.

Why is this horrible procedure allowed? Answer: At each federal election most people unknowingly vote in favour of this practice because they are unaware of their candidate’s position on the issue. For politicians the issue is too politically threatening to want to debate it or even mention it. How tragic.

Prior to the early 1900's in Canada women did not have the right to vote. Under the law a woman was not legally a "person". Today we know this was ridiculous. Today the “non-person” status of the unborn child is equally ridiculous. Only you can change that.

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

England, Hybrids Now Permitted: The U.K. fertility regulator has approved two scientific protocols, which will attempt to create human/animal hybrid embryos for research. They are King's College London and Newcastle University.

Abortion – Breast Cancer Link Confirmed: A recent study in the Journal of the American Physicians and Surgeons has found that abortion is the "best predictor" of breast cancer in reviewing statistics in eight European nations. It is very interesting that this has been totally ignored by the secular media. In response to this, the insurance magazine, The Actuary, has advised insurance companies to adjust their premiums and reserves accordingly in order to plan for a 50% increase in breast cancer that is projected over the next twenty years.

God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Item #2. Indian PM Calls 500,000 Aborted Female Foetuses A Year A 'National Shame'
The American abortion lobby claims to be an equal-opportunity abortion provider, looking out for the needs and wants of all women. Not so. Big Abortion devotes an inordinate amount of attention to Blacks, Hispanics, and Alaska Natives who, in proportion to their population, have the highest abortion rates in America. Now, eager to add another scalp to its collection, it is turning its sights on Native Americans.

Item #3. Planned Parenthood Targets Native Americans With Abortion
We are continually bombarded with ads to be an organ donor. We are told that we are giving the "gift of life" in organ donation. We are led to believe that organs are taken for transplantation after true death – i.e., after the heart and circulation stops and there is no known way to restore them. We are seldom, if ever, made aware that after true death, the heart, liver, and other vital organs are not suitable for transplantation.

Item #4. Aussies Joining New Stem Cell Research
Australian scientists have joined growing international efforts to develop ethically acceptable stem cell technologies to revolutionise the treatment of many diseases.

Researchers at the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC) in Melbourne have begun to cultivate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), a more ethical alternative to controversial embryonic stem cell research.

Unlike embryonic stem cells which are created from human embryos that are later destroyed, iPS cells are created from skin cells or adult cells and can be reprogrammed by using viruses to insert four genes into the cell to make it pluripotent, or capable of turning into different cell types.

Item #5. Scientists Closer To Cure For Parkinson's Thanks To Adult Stem Cell Research
Adult stem cell research, for the pro-life community, is ethically superior to embryonic stem cell research because it doesn't involve the destruction of human life. Scientists at Griffith University in Australia are advancing the notion that its effectiveness is superior as well.

Item #6. Australia Study: 70 Percent Of Women Seeking Abortions Used Contraception
Abortion advocates say the use of contraception is an excellent way to reduce the number of abortions and have demanded that taxpayers fund more contraception efforts. However, a new Australia study shows two-thirds of the women seeking abortions did so because their contraception failed.

Item #7. IVF Success Rate Is Too Low, Says Lord Winston
Professor Lord Winston, the British fertility expert, has expressed regret at the continuing low IVF success-rate. The rate, he said, was 30% and practitioners tended to treat more promising patients. There needed to be a better way of getting good ova and pre-implantation testing should be improved. Anthony Ozimic of SPUC commented: "IVF is wrong, not only because it entails the destruction of embryos not selected for implantation, but also because it abuses human beings by subjecting them to the control of technicians and technology.

Fertility researchers should promote ways, which respect children as gifts expressing their parents' love for each other, instead of reducing children to lifestyle commodities or research material. Natural fertility techniques are far more successful than IVF in assisting couples to conceive."

Item #8. Egg Shortage Hits Race To Clone Human Stem Cells
American scientists working on human embryos complain of a shortage of eggs and want to be allowed to buy them from women. Harvard, Massachusetts, researchers, reportedly interested in cloning, found that women preferred to sell their eggs to fertility clinics after realising that state law forbade the university from paying for them. A $100,000 campaign yielded just one donor.

Item #9. Miracle Baby Is Born Twice
A baby girl in Texas who was taken out of the womb to have a tumour removed was replaced in her mother and was then born naturally 10 weeks later. The growth was detected by scanning, six months into Ms Keri McCartney's pregnancy. Surgery has been performed in utero at 22 weeks' gestation. Medics in Melbourne, Australia, pierced the mother's abdomen and used laser-light and electricity to cut away amniotic tissue, which was restricting, blood supply to the baby's legs. The child was born at 30 weeks and had more surgery. The procedure may have been done earlier in pregnancy than ever before.

A patient, presumed dead, revived as transplant-surgeons in Paris began the process of removing his organs. The city's university hospital's ethics committee has reportedly been told that doctors massaged his heart for 90 minutes before surgeons arrived. He began breathing and now can talk and walk. France recently changed its law to allow the harvesting of organs without a declaration of brain-death.

7. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #376 – June 22, 2008

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Spaniards Strong Rally for Marriage and Family: Earlier this year, between one and two million people gathered in the center of Madrid to affirm the values of marriage and family, to oppose abortion, and to protest the incumbent Socialist government's attacks on these institutions. The rally was partly aimed at influencing the government and public opinion, as national elections as of this writing were less than one month away. It is also in response to the fact that since the Socialists have decriminalized abortion (1985) the number of abortions has doubled from 50,000 to 100,000 annually.

Serbia Facing "Extinction": Serbia's population is declining by 35,000 each year. The average age of a Serb is 41 years, in Belgrade, over 44. The latest census, 2002, shows its families with an average of 0.9 children. The nation has begun to fund childcare centers and give a bonus of 500 USD for the birth of a first child, so far with no apparent impact on the birth rate. One additional complicating factor is that several hundred thousand educated young people left the country in the 1990s because of the war. In neighbouring Croatia, the situation is almost as bad, as is also true in Bosnia- Herzegovina, which has a slightly younger population.

Abortions in Ho Chi Minh City: The number of abortions in this capitol of Vietnam has declined somewhat, but current numbers show that there still are more abortions than live births. The international ratio of boys to girls is about 105 to 100. In Vietnam now, the ratio ranges from 110-120 to 100. Like China and India, in a few years this will lead to a dangerous male/female sexual imbalance.

God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Item #2. Embryonic Stem-Cell Research Immoral, Unnecessary, Bishops Say
Declaring that stem-cell research does not present a conflict between science and religion, the U.S. bishops overwhelmingly approved a statement June 13 calling the use of human embryos in such research "gravely immoral" and unnecessary.

"It now seems undeniable that once we cross the fundamental moral line that prevents us from treating any fellow human being as a mere object of research, there is no stopping point," the document said. "The only moral stance that affirms the human dignity of all of us is to reject the first step down this path.

Item #3. Catholic Church Is Consistent On Abortion
Destruction of the early human embryo was sometimes classified as a lesser sin than murder, but it was always classified as a grave sin, an offence against God and an injustice to the living human creature that God is forming in the womb. It is highly misleading to talk of "the church's current anti-abortion teaching" as though the Catholic Church previously condoned direct abortion.

Item #5. Adult Stem Cells Improve Fracture Healing
Adult stem cells improve healing of broken bones and could eventually serve as a new treatment for the 10 to 20 percent of fractures that fail to heal, according to a new study. The results were presented at The Endocrine Society's 90th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, by Froilan Granero-Molto, PhD, research associate of the University of North Carolina.

Item #6. Elderly Suicides Surge In Japan
Suicides involving people over the age of 60 rose by almost 9% to 12,107, making up nearly 40% of all cases in Japan, the National Police Agency said. Japan's elderly are increasingly concerned about money and rising health care costs. Nationwide, the number of suicides rose by 2.9% to 33,093, the second-highest figure since records began in 1978.

Item #10. Situation Grave
My impression from the various news reports that I read was that adults were not concerned about the driving force that would create a desire among more than 15 girls to get pregnant. Rather, it provoked discussion about whether or not it was time to start providing birth control pills on the school grounds! Now pardon me for being ignorant, but isn't there something more profoundly problematic in this situation than whether or not the pill is available? Has pregnancy become such a meaningless word that those who are older and should know better are not even concerned about the underlying causes of this crisis? What about the parents of these girls and their responsibilities?

Item #11. Neither, Nor: Bryne's And Willke's Pseudo-Battle Over Human Embryonic Stem Cells
What a painful spectacle it is to witness over the internet two such stalwart prolife physicians, who have done so much in their work to help protect the most vulnerable of human beings, battle it out over the terms "conception" and "fertilization" (as presumably when a human being begins to exist) - and both are dead wrong. Biology 101 wrong. But the greater pain is surely their unwitting participation in the further corruption of the relevant fields of science and medicine, the advocacy of legal loopholes that would allow extensive unethical human research and medical practices, and the preclusion of people in general to correctly form their consciences on these critical issues. Enough pseudo-science is enough, no matter who is dispensing it.

8. PRI Weekly Briefing, Sidelining Fathers – June 17, 2008

17 June 2008     Vol. 10 / No. 24

Dear Colleague

We at PRI celebrate fatherhood, but there are many in our culture today who not only denigrate, but wish to destroy it. Happy Father's Day.

Steven W. Mosher

SIDELINING FATHERS – by Colin Mason and Steven Mosher

Last Wednesday, the British House of Commons decided that a father is completely and totally irrelevant to a child's development.

The legislation, which dealt with in vitro fertilization, or IVF, would have included a clause requiring a fertility doctor to "consider a child's need for a male role model before giving women IVF treatment," according to news site This Is London. Even though IVF already marginalizes fathers by effectively removing them from the procreative process, feminists would not allow even this bland and toothless reference to men to stand. The clause was voted down.

This Is London went on to add that "the Government argued that the law as it stood discriminated against single women and lesbian couples - although both these groups can already get fertility treatment on the Health Service. From now on, doctors will have to consider only a child's need for 'supportive parenting'." Whatever that means.

Those of us who still celebrate Father's Day should reflect on this not simply as an isolated event, but as the latest in a long string of attacks that fatherhood has suffered at the hands of feminists and abortionists.

Modern feminists maintain that their highest goal is equality and liberty, but their agenda runs far deeper than that. It is summed up in the phrase, "bodily autonomy," an idea first developed and promoted by Margaret Sanger in her 1914 book, The Woman Rebel. This old-new catchphrase is still used by her ideological descendants. For the sex-obsessed feminism that Sanger helped create, simple equality is not enough. Women need to free themselves not only from men, but also from families, from religion, and especially from pregnancy. They must be completely free to do what they wish, when they wish, with no responsibility to anyone else but themselves.

Even the terms "father" and "husband" are to be rendered out-of-style and obsolete,

This goal of radical autonomy essentially views men as members of an alien species. It completely ignores the complementary nature of men and women as two halves of the same race, whose bonding in lifelong, monogamous relationships is necessary for the survival, happiness and salvation of both. For this brand of feminism, the feminine defines what it means to be human. It is all there is, and it is infinitely plastic. Folk singer Ani DiFranco gleefully calls it "self-determination, and it's very open-ended: every woman has the right to become herself, and do whatever she needs to do."

In their quest to free themselves from the supposed bonds of male oppression, radical feminists have gone far beyond simply marginalizing and dehumanizing men. They have striven to form a world where every function that has historically been performed by men can be performed by women, with the aid of technology. Their goal is to renders fathers and husbands not only unnecessary, but completely superfluous. Even the terms "father" and "husband" are to be rendered out-of-style and obsolete, odd relics from a bygone age, snatches of a song no longer sung.

This predictably wreaks havoc on the family, whose structure follows an age-old reproductive logic: a man, a woman, and the children that they procreate or adopt. If women are autonomous beings, answerable only to themselves, then the family loses its fundamental meaning. It must be redefined in nonbiological ways, and become infinitely inclusive.

Gender itself becomes fluid, as in California, where what bathroom one chooses to enter depends not upon one's genitalia, but upon what gender one has adopted that day. And, of course, ways must be found not only to exist, but to procreate, without men. The Amazons of legend kept men in cages; the radical feminists, assisted by modern technology, keep only the biologically necessary germ cells in test tubes, with abortion as a backup in case the experiment goes awry.

If men attempted to build a society on such principles, it would rightly be considered insanity. But when radical feminists do it, it is merely "feminism."

The pro-life movement faces multiple tasks. It is not enough simply to overturn back laws and change attitudes about abortion, contraception and sex. The very fabric of the relationship between men and women must be stitched back together. What radical feminists do not realize is that by exploding the family, they are destroying the institution that has protected most women over most of human history from abuse. If men are not to be allowed to grow into their vital role as husbands and fathers, then they will simply use, violate and abandon women. The radical feminists are thus exacerbating the very attitudes and trends among men that they purport to be trying to escape.

One of the keys to ending abortion is to reinvigorate fatherhood. Intact, functioning and loving families protect their youngest and most vulnerable members. Isolated individuals -- of either sex -- do not.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 13, 2008

RU 486 CLAIMS LIFE OF 18-YEAR-OLD TEEN
FACING LIFE HEAD-ON to air special report on the dangers of RU 486

Reports from the United Kingdom confirm the thirteenth death related to a chemical abortion caused by RU 486. Llywela Jones, mother of deceased Manon Jones, said she was a bubbly daughter and an A-level student. Brian Whitehouse, Avon deputy coroner, says this is the saddest case he has dealt with in 40 years.

Manon Jones, an 18-year-old from Caernarfon, Gwenedd, died on June 27, 2005 after severe seizures and cardiac arrest. The post-mortem exam states the result of death was from remaining baby parts left inside. Jones took RU 486 on June 11, 2005. Her mother reports that she was not feeling well in the following days, which Jones shared in emails. On June 15 Jones received an ultrasound, which found nothing abnormal. Eight days later Jones checked herself into Southmead Hospital where she received blood transfusions. Her condition deteriorated and four days later she was taken off of life support and pronounced dead. Dr. Hugh White, a physician associated with the inquest, said Jones died of hypovolemia, which is an abnormal decrease in blood volume, and also by shock induced by the baby parts left behind.

Next week Life Issues Institute's TV show, Facing Life Head-On, will air a report on the physical and political ramifications of RU 486. Join host, Brad Mattes, as he talks with three guests: Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America; Rebecca Frech, who had a personal experience with RU 486; and Dr. Donna Harrison, a medical researcher specializing in RU 486.
