1. 9-Month Pregnant Women Slain & Murder of Unborn Child Will Go Unpunished – June 10, 2008

By Tim Waggoner

ST. JOHN'S, NL, June 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A 29-year-old Newfoundland mother was days away from delivering her third child when she was brutally murdered by her boyfriend and the father of the baby, Warren White.  Four neighbourhood kids recently made the gruesome discover of her dismembered body in a forest near an apartment the couple had moved into six months previous.

Amanda Power, who was already a mother of two, was nine months pregnant according to her father, reported the Canadian Press.

"She was almost due," said Peter Power. "I don't think there's a worse hurt in the world that can compare with this."

Holding off tears, the devastated father continued, "She was always a happy-go-lucky child, smiling, friends with everybody."

Power then commented on his daughter's other two children, aged 10 and 12, who live with Power and have not seen their mother for 18 months.  "It was really tough and they're finding it hard, but a lot of family and friends are keeping them busy, keeping their minds off it," he said.

Current Canadian law has no legislation regarding the unborn. Hence, White will escape unpunished for the murder of his child. So far White has been charged only with second-degree murder for the murder of his girlfriend and performing an indignity to a dead body.

If bill C-484 – which is currently making its way through Canadian parliament – were to be passed, however, White could be facing a life sentence for the murder of the baby in addition to a sentence for the murder of his girlfriend.  The Unborn Victims of Violent Crime Bill recently passed second reading in the House of Commons, but is facing stiff opposition from pro-aborts who fear the bill is a step towards the re-criminalization of abortion.

Conservative MP Ken Epp, who is sponsoring Bill C-484, has said that his bill is an attempt to curb violent crimes against pregnant mothers. Statistics show that pregnant women are victims of violent crimes at a much higher rate than non-pregnant women.

"What message are we sending to would-be abusers when our justice system turns a blind eye to the intentional killing of a woman's unborn child against her will?" Epp has asked in the past. "We are only encouraging violence against pregnant women."

A representative for Women for Women's Health, which has represented the families of pregnant women who have been victims of violent crime, also condemned those opposing bill C-484, saying, "It appears to me that people opposing this legislation are bluntly twisting the truth and ignoring the fact that the proposed bill makes a point of stating that this does not apply to a woman's right to chose. It is either intellectual laziness or pure lies to propagate the notion that this will criminalize abortion."

White is undergoing psychological evaluation and will reappear in court on June 16.

2. Canadian Roots and Praise, A Brief History – June 6, 2008

LifeSiteNews.com – Friday June 6, 2008
Canadian Roots and Praise – A Brief History
By Steve Jalsevac

June 6, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On September 10, 1997, John-Henry Westen and I bumbled along as we launched a new pro-life news and information website. We had very little idea of what we were doing and it was rather stressful trying to comprehend all the technical mumbo-jumbo and learning the daily routines.

I was working in the Toronto offices of Canada's national pro-life organization, Campaign Life Coalition, at the time. CLC President Jim Hughes directed me to start this new website especially for the purpose of displaying on the Internet the results of the organization's evaluation candidates for the upcoming federal election.

We were heavily dependent on the willingness of Hugh Ranalli, a computer specialist, to work during his free evenings and weekends to design and implement that first version of what was then called LifeSite.

Every day, for over a year prior to this, John-Henry had been emailing a compilation of news items to a small, informal list of friends and pro-life leaders. We decided to incorporate this service into LifeSite, expand it and post and archive the reports on the website. A look back in the archives reveals the slim fare we published then compared to today's professional reports by an international team of journalists and researchers.

Well, we soon learned that hardly anyone was coming to the website to read what we were putting enormous effort into. That occurred despite repeated promotion of Lifesite to CLC's large national mailing list and regular ads in Canada's pro-life newspaper, The Interim. As it turned out, very few of the people who might be interested in our material had Internet service, if they even had a computer. That seems like decades ago.

Gradually, over the next several years things dramatically changed. More people acquired computers, more began to access the Internet and the Internet became vastly more user friendly and efficient. LifeSite received a major redesign thanks to expert web designer Tony Casta. A great deal of content was added, especially a much beefed up daily news service.

The news eventually became the most accessed feature of the site. LifeSite also began to cover a wider range of issues and branched out into extensive international reporting for which we received much recognition. LifeSiteNews now has writers located in the US, Mexico, England and of course, Canada.

This all happened naturally, as though we were being led without even having to think about what we were supposed to do next. We had key people at the UN, so we started to do the international reporting – and so on. There was no agenda, no real plan. We just responded to what we saw needed to be addressed at that time.

The name was changed to LifeSiteNews.com and last year LifeSiteNews.com was incorporated in the United States as a 501(c)(3) corporation based in Pittsburgh.

The most recent re-design has been the result of well over a year's teamwork by Webmaster Harvey Armoogan, graphic designer Rob Huston, coordinator and Marketing Manager Troy Scotchburn and John-Henry Westen and myself. Many, many hours were spent on brainstorming, development and tweaking. (Which never ends).

That is the long story of LifeSiteNews.com's history in short form. A book could be written about it if we had the time.

Although LifesiteNews is an international service, read in many countries, our Canadian subscribers' list has continued to grow and, as you may have noticed, Canadian stories are still often reported. We send most of them to our international email subscribers simply because we have learned over the years that these developments in Canada have a strong tendency to be exported to or copied in other nations. Canada has an influence in the world well beyond that justified by its relatively small population.

Gwen Llandolt, one of the founders of the national women's organization, REAL Women, has often been quoted by LifeSiteNews. That is because she has a wealth of experience on the life and family issues both in Canada and internationally. But Gwen also depends on LifeSiteNews. She recently wrote:

"In order to obtain a comprehensive picture world wide of the pro-life/family issues, it is essential to read LifeSiteNews each day. This is because LifeSiteNews provides articles that are not available anywhere else and is the best researched website available on pro-life/pro-family issues."

Gwen Landolt
National Vice President
REAL Women of Canada

Brian Rushfeldt of the Canada Family Action Coalition is also a LifeSiteNews fan. He states:

"LifeSite News is Canada's leading source of news that matters. It can be trusted and is a great assistance to keep Canadians informed. CFAC uses this daily to keep aware of issues we all must act upon. Thanks LSN."

LifeSiteNews has friends in the churches who rely on LifeSiteNews and are not shy to say so. One is St. Catherine's bishop James Wingle.

"Accurate and timely information are essential to all committed to the work of promoting a culture of life. But where can we find reliable sources of such information? Much of the mainstream media simply ignores issues of life, or when they do run stories on life issues, they are frequently coloured by the pervasive influence of the culture of death and violence that has so tragically penetrated our society. LifeSiteNews.com strives to provide its readers with timely and truthful reporting of what is going on in the dramatic struggle to proclaim and promote the inalienable dignity and worth of human life. This initiative is noble and deserves support. May God bless you.

Faithfully in Christ,
+ James Wingle, Bishop of St. Catharines, Ontario

Canadian Member of Parliament Pierre Lemieux is one of many Canadian politicians who regularly read and rely on LifeSiteNews:

3. Fascism Has Come To Canada – June 6, 2008

"The state dismisses the spiritual authority and usurps its role. In history this is called 'statism,' better known as fascism," writes editor of Catholic magazine – By John Jalsevac

TORONTO, June 6, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a scathing editorial in the most recent issue of The Catholic Insight (CI), Fr. Alphonse de Valk, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, argues that the ideology of the "divinization" of the state that has historically been called "fascism", is fast encroaching on the rights and freedoms of religious believers in Canada.

De Valk bases his argument on the increasing number of instances where Canadian citizens are being forced to choose between their religious beliefs and the dogmas of the state.

It is a situation with which De Valk is himself intimately familiar. Currently his magazine is the defendant in an expensive and drawn-out human rights complaint. De Valk and Catholic Insight are being accused of having done nothing more than stated traditional Christian teaching on homosexuality - the very same "crime" that other religious citizens in Canada have been found guilty of and punished for by the state's human rights commissions.

De Valk begins his editorial by quoting a recent piece from REAL Women's magazine, which said that in Canada in the very near future "adoptions, social services such as nursing homes, religious-based schools, marriages, employment conduct, etc., carried out by religious organizations will be held to secular standards, not religious ones."

"One reason for this development," says the editor of CI, "is the demand of homosexual activists that everyone conform to their vision of equality rights. So much for the argument that legalizing same-sex 'marriage' would be of no concern except to homosexual activists."

Already in Quebec, observes Fr. De Valk, the Department of Education is replacing Christian ethics in schools with a course that teaches that Christianity is but one religion amongst many others. In so doing, he says, "the state dismisses parental rights and the formative role of Christian culture, and replaces it with secular sociology… In history this is called 'statism,' better known as fascism."

In another recent case, the Ontario Human Rights Commission ruled that Christian Horizons, a Christian charity that ministered to the seriously handicapped, must stop requiring its employees to sign a Lifestyle Agreement that would have held employees to traditional standards of Christian morality. Commentators on the decision, lamented Fr. De Valk, including Lorne Gunter of the Edmonton Journal and Nigel Hannaford of the Calgary Herald failed to recognize "that the citizen should honour both state and God."

"By presenting state and God as equal opposites between whom we must choose, Gunter and Hannaford appear to accept the fascist order whereby the state tells the citizen what he may and may not do, think, and write."

This view, says Fr. De Valk, is in direct contradiction to Judeo-Christian teaching, which has always said that the state is a tool made to serve man in order to bring man to God. "Man is made by God and for God. The state is the servant of man, a mere instrument, to help him in this world." To divinize the state, to make of it the supreme arbiter of what its citizens may do or say or think, goes against the entire Judeo-Christian tradition.

Fr. De Valk then goes on to quote from one of the most powerful sections of Pope Benedict's address to the United Nations at length.

"Human rights, of course," said the Holy Father at that time, "must include the right to religious freedom, understood as the expression of a dimension that is at once individual and communitarian – a vision that brings out the unity of the person while clearly distinguishing between the dimension of the citizen and that of the believer… It is inconceivable, then, that believers should have to suppress a part of themselves – their faith – in order to be active citizens. It should never be necessary to deny God in order to enjoy one's rights. The rights associated with religion are all the more in need of protection if they are considered to clash with a prevailing secular ideology or with majority religious positions of an exclusive nature. The full guarantee of religious liberty cannot be limited to the free exercise of worship, but has to give due consideration to the public dimension of religion, and hence to the possibility of believers playing their part in building the social order."

Fr. De Valk concludes his editorial by observing that, as the Holy Father intimated, believers do indeed play their part – an extremely significant part – in building the social order. "For example, through their influential and generous involvement in a vast network of initiatives which extend from Universities, scientific institutions and schools to health care agencies and charitable organizations in the service of the poorest and most marginalized."

He concludes, "Refusal to recognize the contribution to society that is rooted in the religious dimension and in the quest for the Absolute-by its nature, expressing communion between persons – would effectively privilege an individualistic approach, and would fragment the unity of the person."

4. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #374 – June 8, 2008

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Ecuador's President and ruling party have announced that they are opposed to mentioning God in the nation's new Constitution and have called into question the "inviability of life" as it is phrased in the existing Constitution. There is great worry that the new Constitution yet to be adopted in Ecuador will include legal abortions. In recent weeks, two members of the pro-abortion ruling party, Congresswomen, Rossana Queirolo and Diana Acosta, have broken ranks with their party and forcefully argued for protection of unborn life. Since that time, they have been attacked by fellow party members, who have asked them to resign for not following the party line.

Congresswoman Queirolo responded saying that she was elected by the people's mandate and that she would not abandon her personal convictions. "I am keeping to my position regarding respect for life from conception to death." In addition, a group of Evangelical Protestant churches have delivered a petition of over 100,000 signatures to the Parliament. Catholics have also organized pro-life events including a March for Life under the banner of The Life and Future of Ecuador in the diocese of Guayaquil, its largest city.

U.S. Teen Abortion Drops: Data from Alan Guttmacher Institute (of Planned Parenthood) reports that today's U.S. teenagers are about 40% less likely to have an abortion than were their predecessors fifteen years ago. Reasons include: A higher percentage of teenagers are practicing abstinence before marriage. Parental involvement laws are now functional in 32 of the 50 states, as well as other pro-life legislation limiting accessibility to abortions.

God Bless; Jerry Novotny, OMI

The Holy Father said that every human being has a right to life, and that right implies the accompanying right to the things necessary to sustain life. Thus the "primary right to food is intrinsically linked to the safeguarding and defence of human life," he concluded. http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=58829

Item #1. Miracle Of Mother Who Gave Birth To Baby Girl After A Nine-Month Ectopic Pregnancy
A child in Australia has been born at 38 weeks after implanting in her mother's ovary. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said the case of Durga Thangaraja was one in a million since survival is so rare. The ectopic nature of the pregnancy was not detected until late on. The doctor who delivered the child said that, had he known, he would have advised abortion.

Item #2. Liberals In Belgium Propose Euthanasia For Children And Persons With Dementia
Comment: The duty to die looms again over those who are at the greatest risk of being abused – those who can not speak for themselves. Just whom do they think they are fooling by claiming euthanasia will only apply to those who request it in writing. Infants? – Belgium already kills infants! Children? Children hardly understand the meaning of life, never mind suffering, pain and death. And then those who suffer dementia ... let's consider one definition of dementia "Deterioration of intellectual faculties, such as memory, concentration, and judgment, resulting from an organic disease or a disorder of the brain. It is sometimes accompanied by emotional disturbance and personality changes. " Don't miss the part stating doctors who oppose this will be forced to refer victims to doctors willing to kill. Who will speak against this atrocious bill? Who will rise up and fight this insanity? Cheryl CHN

Item #3. Help! Organs Taken From Living People!
We are continually bombarded with ads to be an organ donor. We are told that we are giving the "gift of life" in organ donation. We are led to believe that organs are taken for transplantation after true death – i.e., after the heart and circulation stops and there is no known way to restore them. We are seldom, if ever, made aware that after true death, the heart, liver, and other vital organs are not suitable for transplantation.

Item #5.  Shock As Baby Scan Reveals Quads
A British couple who are expecting naturally-conceived quads have refused so-called selective abortion. Mr Michael Wing, the father, is quoted as saying that such intervention could lead to the deaths of all the children. Mrs Emma Wing, of Devon, says she wants nature to take its course.

Item #6. Promoting Death: Analyzing The Language Of Euthanasia, Suicide Advocates
Even the most despicable ideas can be made palatable when euphemisms are used to spin them. That's why abortion advocates call themselves "pro-choice" rather than "pro abortion." It's also why they talk about "terminating a pregnancy" rather than "killing a baby."

Item #7. Five Myths About No-Fault Divorce
Almost four decades after the "no-fault" divorce revolution began in California, misconceptions abound. Even the many books about divorce, including myriad self-help manuals, are full of inaccurate and misleading information. No public debate preceded the introduction of no-fault divorce laws in the 1970s, and no debate has taken place since.

Yet divorce-on-demand is exacting a devastating toll on our children, our social order, our economy, and even our constitutional rights. A recent study estimates the financial cost of divorce to taxpayers at $112 billion annually. Recent demands to legitimize same-sex marriage almost certainly follow from the divorce revolution, since gay activists readily acknowledge that they only desire to marry under the loosened terms that have resulted from the new divorce laws. Divorce also contributes to a dangerous increase in the power of the state over private life.

Item #8. Good News: Adult Stem Cells Treat Fatal Skin Disease
Researchers and doctors have used adult stem cells to successfully treat 2-year-old Nate Liao, who had a rare, fatal skin disease called recessive dystrophic epidermolysis.

In October, Nate received a cord-blood and bone marrow stem-cell transplant from his brother, Julian. Their mom said Nate's skin is already stronger. Nate, who was never able to eat normal food, is now eating pork chops and chips. Another brother, Jake, underwent a similar transplant last week.

Item #10. Ethical And Scientific Concerns About Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Research Yamanaka And Thomson
In a valiant effort to resolve at last the obvious and highly divisive ethical concerns surrounding the use of human embryonic and foetal "stem cells", tissues and body parts in experimental and therapeutic research and in patient "therapies", several researchers have recently released their studies involving the production of "induced pluripotent stem cells" (iPS cells). However, on closer observation, because of the use of erroneous and vague scientific terms, the lack of match between the studies' claims and the details of the studies, admitted problems in the experiments, and other possible sources of artifacts and foreign antigens, these iPS studies do not appear to be a viable solution.

Item #11. Embryo Adoption: A Form Of In Vivo Organ Donation?
Is embryo adoption intrinsically evil, or is it a legitimate moral act? In order to determine whether it is moral, we should consider the situation in its best case: when the intentions of the actors are assumed to be oriented toward the good. I will therefore consider the case of embryo adoption in which a married couple who opposes in vitro fertilization allows the implantation of an embryonic child who has been abandoned during the IVF process. The couple does this to give that child the opportunity to grow to adulthood within their family. The morality of this act is a complex issue, because it is not simply a case of adopting a child. It is, instead, a more complex case that intertwines elements from several moral issues, including organ donation.

Item #12. Problems With Colorado's "Personhood" Amendment: The Phrase, "From The Moment Of Fertilization"
According to a recent LifeSiteNews article (copied in full below), Americans finally have an "historic chance to defeat Roe v. Wade on the ballot in Colorado". The article continues with a fairly detailed account of the publicity surrounding Colorado's "personhood" Amendment 48, about to be voted on. The Amendment states that, "the terms 'person' or 'persons' shall include any human being from the moment of fertilization". As the article also notes, the "Catholic Church in Colorado declares neutrality" (at least). This writer would suggest that for once the bishops got it right, because Amendment 48 would only legalize "personhood" for some categories of unborn human beings, but hardly for all. The legal and moral consequences of that would indeed set precedents, moral and legal precedents that would instead extend ever further the evils and injustices of Roe in this technological age.

5. Little But Serious Humour From South Of The Border – June 6, 2008

Bathroom Wars – Potty Politics By Chuck Colson – http://www.breakpoint.org

Three months ago, I told you about a new law in Montgomery County, Maryland, that demands co-ed locker rooms and restrooms in all public accommodations. The law was intended to accommodate "transgendered people" – that is, men who say they perceive themselves to be women, and women who claim they consider themselves men. I said, at the time, that we would see extremists in other jurisdictions attempting to pass similar laws. And that is exactly what is happening.

Last week, Colorado's legislature passed – and Gov. Bill Ritter signed – a law that will open all public accommodations, including public restrooms, to anyone who wants to use them. That means men may use a women's restroom, and women may enter men's rooms. The rationale for Senate Bill 200 is that transgenders should be able to use the restroom they feel most comfortable using. Apparently, it is not important if others feel uncomfortable having their privacy violated every time they use public facilities.

The lack of privacy is not the only problem. Nobody is going to ask a man if he is trangendered before allowing him into the ladies' room. This means any man – including a child molester – could simply follow a little girl into the privacy of a public restroom. And, if a man decided to expose himself to a young girl there, whom is she going to complain to? After all, restrooms, by definition, are places where one exposes the private parts of one's body.

Men will have even less privacy, because they often do not use stalls.

Appalling as this law is, it gets worse. Tom Minnery of Focus on the Family points out, in the Denver Post, that the law also threatens religious liberty: Colorado's "public accommodations" law includes not only hotels and restaurants, but also any small or home-based business that offers "goods or services" to the public.

And, as we have seen before, radicals go out of their way to target Christian businesses. As Minnery notes, in Albuquerque, a Christian couple who operate a photography studio politely declined, on religious grounds, to photograph a lesbian "commitment ceremony." For this exercise of their First Amendment rights, the couple were forced to appear before New Mexico's human rights commission and fined more than $6,600. Now, if you dare to deny a transgendered "man" access to the women's room, you can be prosecuted under criminal laws and spend up to a year in jail. It is an outrage.

The American people are not asking for new bathroom laws. The truth is, this is an effort – by a small but radical minority – to use the force of law to punish anyone backward enough to believe there are only two sexes: male and female. The true goal behind the law is the radical remaking of our society – one in which faithful Christians, Muslims, and Jews will be punished for their beliefs.

Are you disgusted enough? Good. If you live in Colorado, get to work putting an initiative on the November ballot. That is what citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland, did. And the rest of us better stay on our guard, keeping an eye on our own lawmakers.

In a free country, nobody has the right to tell us what to believe – or to punish us for putting our First Amendment rights into practice. And, yes, there are men and women who deserve privacy, no matter who tells us there are no differences between the sexes.

Ambrose defends Tory foetal rights bill

TheStar.com – Canada – Ambrose defends Tory foetal rights bill Minister accuses Dion of `fear-mongering women' by trying to turn C-484 into a new abortion debate

June 06, 2008
Susan Delacourt
Ottawa Bureau

OTTAWA – Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Rona Ambrose, one of the most socially progressive members of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government, is throwing her support behind a controversial private member's bid to legally recognize the rights of the unborn.

Ambrose made a rare step into public debate yesterday to tell reporters she backs the so-called Unborn Victims of Crime Act, or C-484, a proposed bill put forward by Conservative MP Ken Epp (Edmonton-Sherwood Park), which critics are calling a back-door method to give the foetus rights and make abortions more difficult to obtain in Canada.

Epp says his bill specifically states that it doesn't apply to abortion, and Ambrose, who worked with women's shelters in her pre-political life, said yesterday the bill is about crime, not abortion.

"Our government has no interest, no intention of reopening the abortion debate. That debate is over. It was over a long time ago, but there is an issue of protecting pregnant women who choose to have a baby," Ambrose said in an interview.

Before she became a politician, Ambrose worked in women's shelters and with female victims of violence and she said it is in this capacity that she supports Epp's bill.

Ambrose said she decided to weigh into the debate after hearing Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion vow at a news conference that his party would do all it could to block C-484.

7. More On Human Rights Commission Canada (Satirical?) – June 6, 2008

Those Human Rights Commissions-Even the Australians are laughing at us. From the Australian Newspaper

James Allan | June 06, 2008

THE AUSTRALIAN

HERE is a little known fact about Canada. It is today a country where you can say or write things that are true and yet still be brought before a tribunal.

That tribunal can fine you; it can order you to pay money to the people who complained about your words; it can force you to issue an apology; it can do all three.

That's not all, though. The people who complained will not need to hire a lawyer.

Their costs will be picked up by the state, by the taxpayers.

You, on the other hand, will have to hire a lawyer to defend yourself. And there will be no award of costs at the end, so that even if you win, you will still be out of pocket to your lawyers tens of thousands of dollars.

Of course, you will not win.

Why? Because in the entire history of these Canadian tribunals, hearing these cases, those people like you who have been hauled before these tribunals have never won – not one single time.

The complainants always win.

This amazing inroad into free speech will surely come as a surprise to most Australians, not least because in so many ways Canada is the country closest to ours in terms of constitutional and democratic history.

And yet it's all true. These things are happening right now – in Britain's oldest self-governing Dominion, the place where so many of the lawyerly class here in Australia regularly look for inspiration when it comes to bills of rights and how best to protect human rights (which is incredibly ironic, I know).

I don't say any of this lightly. In fact it embarrasses me no end because I am a native-born Canadian, educated there right through law school. I don't much like having to state the obvious, which is that Canada has become a joke as far as the issue of protecting free speech is concerned.

8. PRI Weekly Briefing - Minority Targeting; Planned Parenthood Goes After Native Americans – June 9, 2008

Minority Targeting: Planned Parenthood Goes After Native Americans – by Colin Mason

The American abortion lobby claims to be an equal-opportunity abortion provider, looking out for the needs and wants of all women. Not so. Big Abortion devotes an inordinate amount of attention to Blacks, Hispanics, and Alaska Natives who, in proportion to their population, have the highest abortion rates in America. Now, eager to add another scalp to its collection, it is turning its sights on Native Americans.

The story begins with the Hyde amendment, which restricts abortion coverage in federal health programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Indian Health Services, although leaving open the typical exceptions: rape, incest, and life of the mother. In other words, the amendment recognizes that a huge portion of American taxpayers oppose abortion, and it respects that opposition by insisting that abortions not be covered by tax-funded health care programs. The Hyde amendment was attached to the Department of Health and Human Services appropriations bill, and passed in 1976.

Although the abortion lobby has attempted to use legal loopholes to avoid these restrictions, the amendment has been able to keep federal funds from actively paying for abortions throughout the years. However, since it needs to be renewed each year with the annual appropriations bill, there is always the chance that the amendment could be weakened or even thrown out entirely. This is what the pro-abortion lobby intends to do with the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. This is what the Vitter amendment, proposed by Senator David Vitter (R-LA), aims to prevent.

The Vitter amendment, approved by the Senate on February 26th, is an amendment to the Indian Health Care Improvement Act that prohibits the "improvements" to Indian health from including funding for abortion. This measure, bitterly opposed by House Democrats, would effectively codify the Hyde amendment into Federal law, making it removable only by an act of Congress.

The abortion lobby, with typical upside-down logic, insists that it is inherently "racist" to deny Native American women the right to abortion.  As usual, they have recruited Native American front woman to back them up.  "It's a very racist amendment," insists Charon Asetoyer, executive director of the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center, in a statement to the Washington Independent. "it puts another layer of restrictions on the only race of people whose health care is governed primarily by the federal government. All women are subject to the Hyde amendment, so why would they put another set of conditions on us?"

David Vitter (R., LA)

Planned Parenthood is predictably indignant, basing its opposition to the Vitter amendment in the fact that "under current policy, the Hyde Amendment forbids federal funding for abortion in almost all cases. IHS already delivers basic health care services in a manner consistent with the Hyde Amendment. In fact, 25 U.S.C. 1676 subjects IHS funds to restrictions by the Hyde Amendment. Sen. Vitter's amendment is simply a redundancy of current law and would not change current policy."

If this is the case, then what is the big deal?  If all that Vitter's amendment does is codify existing law, (and in this case, only in terms of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act), then why is it such a hot point of contention?  Why doesn't the abortion lobby oppose all legislation restricting federal abortion funding, not singling out legislation that deals with a minority group like the Native Americans?

In other words, this looks suspiciously like racial profiling.  The abortion lobby is quick to label Vitter's amendment "racist," but they are not so quick to notice that they are essentially promoting federally funded abortion for one tiny ethnic group, and nobody else.

But not all Native Americans are fooled by the abortion lobby's rhetoric, contrary to what Planned Parenthood would have us believe.  Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver, CO, a long-time opponent of abortion, continues to urge voters in his archdiocese to vote against pro-choice legislation and candidates.  As he said in a 2007 statement, "it's hard to have a future 'for our children and our children's children' without children, and Planned Parenthood specializes in the business of preventing them."

Other Native Americans would do well to follow Archbishop Chaput's example; rejecting the inflated rhetoric of the pro-abortion left and accepting these efforts for what they really are—an attempt to target an already vanishing minority.  Native Americans take pride in their people; we hope that they learn to oppose these measures that strike at the very heart of their future: their children.

9. WHO Official Admits No Pandemic Of AIDS Amongst Heterosexuals – June 9, 2008

WHO Official Admits No Pandemic of AIDS amongst Heterosexuals "men who have sex with men... is something that is going to have to be discussed much more rigorously." – By Peter J. Smith

LONDON, June 9, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An official with the World Health Organisation (WHO) is finally admitting what many AIDS experts have been saying for years – there is no threat of a world AIDS pandemic among heterosexuals.

According to a report by The Independent, a UK-based newspaper, Epidemiologist Kevin de Cock, the head of the WHO's department of HIV/AIDS, admitted to The Independent that AIDS is seen no longer as a risk to heterosexual populations outside sub-Saharan Africa, but rather is restricted to high-risk groups such as homosexual men, injecting drug users, prostitutes and their solicitors.

"It is very unlikely there will be a heterosexual epidemic in other countries," said de Cock. "Ten years ago a lot of people were saying there would be a generalised epidemic in Asia – China was the big worry with its huge population. That doesn't look likely. But we have to be careful. As an epidemiologist it is better to describe what we can measure. There could be small outbreaks in some areas."

The HIV/AIDS director confirmed that male homosexuals are most at risk for AIDS, and that in many places rates of infection amongst male homosexuals are increasing, not declining.

"We face a bit of a crisis [in this area]. In the industrialised world transmission of HIV among men who have sex with men is not declining and in some places has increased," stated de Cock.

"In the developing world, it has been neglected. We have only recently started looking for it and when we look, we find it. And when we examine HIV rates we find they are high.

"It is astonishing how badly we have done with men who have sex with men. It is something that is going to have to be discussed much more rigorously."

The Independent described de Cock's statements as "the first official admission that the universal prevention strategy promoted by the major AIDS organisations may have been misdirected."

However, promoting the strategy of universal prevention is also recognized as having been one of the most successful ways that homosexual activists capitalised on the impending AIDS pandemic to make the general public sympathetic to their cause and to launch them from political obscurity to their current elevated status. Although the AIDS "pandemic" among heterosexuals may now have disappeared, its political usefulness has also since disappeared, with homosexual activists now aggressively changing marriage laws worldwide.

The WHO admission follows the UN's own admission in November 2007 that its statistics for calculating the worldwide extent of the AIDS "pandemic" were also overblown. The change was motivated in large part due to the evidence made public by Dr. James Chin, former head of a WHO Global Programme on AIDS unit from 1987-1992, and others, that indicated numbers were being inflated by AIDS policymakers to perpetuate the myth of a looming pandemic in the general population.
