1. A Proxy Caste – July 16, 2008
Barbara Kay, National Post Published: Wednesday, July 16, 2008
The awarding of the Order of Canada to abortionist Henry Morgentaler has stirred controversy in recent weeks. The negative attention paid to this decorous institution has led some to ask: Is this the end of the Order of Canada as we know it? This week, the National Post has asked its regular contributors to offer their opinion about the future of Canada's highest civilian honour.
After reading Karen Selick's denunciation and John Moore's approbation of the Order of Canada in Tuesday's Post, my conclusion is that Moore's chances of eventually getting one just improved significantly, and Selick's disappeared entirely.
For any rational observer of OC history knows that only people who hold the "correct" views are eligible for the OC, and Ms. Selick's views are manifestly "incorrect."
Which isn't to say that most of the OCs aren't worthy. But then there are all those equally worthy individuals who will never get one because they hold the wrong views.
Case in point: bio-ethicist Margaret Somerville whose nominator was told by a committee member her candidate was "too controversial." Ms. Somerville has made a great contribution to the intellectual life of Canada and has received a cornucopia of other honours. But she does not believe in gay marriage. For the committee, offending gays is controversial, while sickening Catholics is not.
The only public honours truly objectively bestowed are military ones – which, unlike the OC, cannot be nullified or recalled. You either flung your body on that dud grenade you thought was live to save your buddies, or you didn't.
But with civic awards, there's always that whiff of scepticism. Sometimes it's an outright farce. One friend with an OC indignantly informed me that she gets near-weekly letters begging her for references. These letters come from brazenly social-climbing OC-wannabbees whom she doesn't even know personally. (My friend, by the way, got her OC the honest way: her nomination was a surprise to her, and richly deserved.)
There is no point in advocating an end to the Order of Canada. Human nature is such that people will have their caste system one way or another. Once you have replaced the social class system and its lords and ladies and knights with democratic classlessness, you must invent a proxy caste that cultural elites can shoot for. Somewhere in every polity there must be a virtual club to which Groucho Marx would not belong if they would have him as a member.
Let the Order stand. But take away the secrecy of the process. Rotate the committee membership and make it reflective of Canada, not a university Women's Studies department. Like juries. You know, democratic.
Make professional politicians ineligible. Make no controversial appointments, or admit both sides of the controversies. That would be a beginning. Most of the non-ideologically appointed members would still be there.
But Sue Johanson who in 2001 received her Order of Canada for dispatching sexual tips to adolescents and fondling "pleasure toys" on her Women's Television Sunday Night Sex Show? I daresay she wouldn't. And come to think, maybe neither would writer Jane Vance who was appointed for "populating her novels with homosexual as well as heterosexual characters." She'd not be missed.
Nor would Henry Morgentaler. On the other hand, we have Morgentaler to thank for exposing the hypocrisy at the Order's heart, and that's an accomplishment worth rewarding.

You may not think of yourself as the next Kristi Yamaguchi, but long before you could walk, you could dance. Not on the floor, mind you, but in the womb.
If you want proof of an unborn baby's dancing ability, check out http://www.yourdevelopingbaby.com/sampleChapters/7.htm
There, under the headline "Baby aerobics," you'll see a baby 15 weeks after conception, doing a unique form of hip hop.
The incredible video comes courtesy of two Harvard radiology professors, Peter Doubilet and Carol Benson, a married couple who have written an eye-catching book called "Your Developing Baby." The work includes some 250 images which underscore the humanity of the unborn child.
I think it can be argued that where there is dancing, there is life. Therefore, an abortion disrupts the dance of life, destroying the dancer's body and rendering him or her lifeless.
When the debate over abortion is reduced to a woman's quest for control of her body, the invisible dancer is forgotten. If abortion is considered tantamount to a tooth extraction, the "pro-choice" argument can seem convincing to the uninformed.
But the rhetoric does not jive with the reality, especially when you can see clips of a child jive-dancing in her mother's belly. The rule of self-determination should apply to the human who makes her home in the womb, as well as the human who supplies the womb. If a pregnant woman has a right to bodily integrity, which she does, so does the little woman inside of her.
An ultrasound image can leave us speechless, so breathtaking is it in its intensity. How, then, can we possibly justify leaving the subject of the image gasping for life?
Paging through "Your Developing Baby" can yield an "Aha!" moment, just as when Juno comes to the understanding that the child within her has fingernails. When the "it" becomes a "he" or a "she," the pro-life argument wins.
There may be no mirror ball trophies for the best unborn dancer of them all, but these little athletes deserve celebrity status. They should be treated with the utmost kindness and respect, as should their mothers. And no doctor should be permitted to bring their dances to an end.
4. Death Rather Than Disability – July 11, 2008
The eugenics ideology is alive and well in our culture. This poll represents a reality that negative attitudes towards living with a disability or people with disabilities is part of the deeply held beliefs within our culture.
I can understand that a person would not want to live with a disability, but this shows how important it is to protect people with disabilities because they are a targeted group who face social and cultural isolation. People fear disability and so react by believing that they would be better off dead.
If euthanasia and assisted suicide were to become culturally approved by society, it would result in a direct threat to the lives of people with disabilities.

Americans would rather be dead than disabled: poll
NEW YORK (Reuters) – More than half of Americans would rather die than live with a severe disability, according to a survey.
In the online poll commissioned by Disaboom, a Web site and social network for people affected by disabilities, 52 percent of the 1,000 "nationally represented" adults chose death over losing the ability to live an independent life.
Disaboom, which launched the survey to better understand people's perceptions of disabilities, said more than 54 million Americans – 1 in 6 people – live with some form of debilitating condition.
"We want to show everyone that it's not the end, it's a new beginning," Glen House, co-founder of Disaboom and a quadriplegic for 18 years, said in an interview.
The poll, conducted by Kelton Research, found significant differences in attitudes based on age, income, location and level of education.
Middle-aged Americans were less willing to live with a severe disability than older Americans, it found.
In the 35 to 44 age group, 63 percent chose death over severe disability, compared with half of the 55 to 64 group and 56 percent of those 65 and older.
House, who was 20 when he broke his neck in a skiing accident, is also a director of rehabilitation at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs and the first person to climb Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains in a wheelchair.
Asked if he was shocked by the findings, House said: "If you asked me when I was 20, I probably would have been in that group as well, because I didn't know anybody who lived with severe disability."
After his accident, he said, he had "amazing support."
"Right from the beginning I thought 'Let's move on,"' House said.
The survey found people with higher household incomes were more likely to choose death over severe disability – 59 percent of those earning $75,000 or more compared with 45 percent of those making $25,000 or less.
Only 45 percent of people living in the South picked death, compared with 61 percent in the West. College graduates were more likely to choose death (57 percent) than respondents who have did not finish high school (30 percent).

6. Lifeissues.Net Newsletter #380 – July 20, 2008
Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
"In Mexico Women Are Dying." Mr. Jorge Serrano Limon, who heads Mexico's pro-life group, says that officials have only acknowledged one of eight known maternal deaths due to abortions, and that over 6,000 babies have been killed since abortion was legalized in Mexico City one year ago.
"Abstinence Education Equals Fewer Teen Births." During the past eight years, as funding for authentic abstinence education in the U.S. has increased, the young unmarried teen birth rate has been cut in half. The most dramatic decrease has been among young (10 to 14) black unmarried teens, their birth rates now are the lowest in recorded history. Birth rates for all teens, age 10 to 14, are also the lowest in 40 years. Birth rates for teens, age 15 to 19, are the lowest in 20 years. It is noted that in 1995 and 1998, when abstinence education funding was significantly increased, the teen birth rate began its sharpest decline.
"Humane Vitae Is Forty Years Old." This encyclical on human life, which was intensely controversial when published, has survived the test of time. Now on its fortieth birthday, we find reports from around the world in support of its message, noting that its predictions have come true.
God Bless, Jerry Novotny, OMI

Item #4. Church Duty To Draw Attention To Issues
A Catholic bishop has suggested a link between Britain's high abortion rate and its severe social deprivation. Rt. Rev. Joseph Devine, Bishop of Motherwell, Scotland, writes: "[A] nation that condemns to abortion our beautiful and blameless unborn babies betrays itself as morally, ethically and politically untrustworthy[,] and disinclined to give due care and attention to the poorest and weakest members of our society."

Item #5. Planned Parenthood Blasts Bush Rule To Help Pro-Life Doctors On Abortion
Wright talked about the opposition from Planned Parenthood and said their opposition makes them look hypocritical. "Clearly, abortion advocates do not believe in the 'right to choose' if the choice is not to participate in abortion or provide drugs that can take the life of a human being," she concluded.

Item #6. Filipino Bishops' Leader Backs Withholding Communion
Filipino Catholic bishops are banning pro-abortion politicians from communion. Archbishop Angelo Lagdameo of Jaro, president of the Episcopal conference, has backed Archbishop Jesus Dosado of Ozamis whose pastoral letter enunciated the policy. Archbishop Lagdameo plans to do the same in his diocese and says the ban covers anyone publicly supporting abortion. Our source suggests the American bishops did not similarly rally around Most Rev Raymond Burke, now head of the church's highest court in Rome, when, as Archbishop of St Louis, he took a similar line.

Humanae Vitae
A Harvard-affiliated obstetrician has been indicted on a manslaughter charge after an abortion he performed last year on Cape Cod ended in the death of a 22-year-old woman, prosecutors said yesterday. Dr. Rapin Osathanondh, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health, allegedly failed to monitor Laura Hope Smith of Sandwich while she was under anaesthesia during the procedure in September at Women's Health Center in Hyannis. Prosecutors allege he delayed trying to resuscitate Smith after she stopped breathing and then lied about his actions and the equipment he had available after the state began investigating.

Item #9. Mexican Pro-Lifers To UN: Stop Murdering Our Children
Members of Mexico's National Pro-life Committee held a protest recently outside the offices of the United Nations in response to the organization's continuing support for abortion in Mexico and worldwide. The protest took something of a dramatic turn, as three of the protesters dressed in costumes depicting an abortionist businessmen with profit as their puppeteer, who in turn pretended to kill another participant dressed as a chick in its nest. In an accompanying letter to the United Nations Organization, the Committee's president and director writes that the organization "has confused its mission and has been converted into the greatest enemy of peace by proposing birth control and abortion as solutions to the demographic challenges that the world confronts."

Item #10. Record Rise In Sexual Diseases Among Promiscuous Young Adults
Sexually transmitted disease in Britain is more widespread than ever, the total increasing by 72% over 10 years. Half of sufferers last year were aged 16 to 24. [Independent, 16 July] The Health Protection Agency urged young people to have fewer partners. [Guardian, 16 July] Family and Youth Concern said: "The answer does not lie in yet more sex education and contraceptive schemes, but in honestly telling young people the only sure way to avoid being infected with [a sexually-transmitted disease] is to keep sexual intimacy within the context of a lifelong, mutually faithful relationship with an uninfected partner." She was less a traditional activist than an acute social conscience. Item #12. Half Human, Half Animal?
Using cloning technology, these embryos are made out of human and animal parts. By injecting a human nucleus (the "human genetic package") into a cow egg that has had its own genetic package taken out, a defective human embryo can be created.
People sometimes imagine this would make a half-human, half-animal creature and, hence, the name "hybrid embryo." However, because the nuclear genetic package is entirely human, the new embryo would actually be human with various cow molecules present as "contaminants" within the embryo's biochemical machinery. The reason for trying to produce these maimed human embryos is to be able to destroy them before they grow too large, prior to reaching two weeks of age, in order to obtain their stem cells.

New Book Exposes Eugenics Mandate In Reproductive Rights Agenda – July 21, 2008
Part I: Power, Money, and Science Unite to Exterminate the World's Poor
By Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D.
(NEW YORK – C-FAM) A book recently published by Harvard University Press explains how eugenics united some of the richest and most powerful elites of the twentieth century into a movement "to remake humanity by controlling the population of the world," answering to no one and bringing untold misery upon the world's poor. The book, "Fatal Misconception: The Struggle to Control World Population," was written by Columbia University historian Matthew Connelly and shows why today's reproductive rights advocates are "faithfully reciting a eugenic catechism without the faintest idea where it comes from or where it can lead."
In 1952, at a secret, invitation-only gathering in Colonial Williamsburg, John D. Rockefeller III brought together what would become the modern population control establishment. Setting the agenda for the following decades were the heads of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, National Academy of Sciences, and top scientists "from embryology to economics," including past and present Nobel Prize winners.
From verbatim transcripts of the "Conference on Population Problems," just one of the countless number of such meetings the book exposes, Connelly found that what drove them were the questions of how many people the world could hold along with "whether 'industrial development should be withheld' from poor, agrarian countries like India." By decreasing mortality and encouraging "breeding," development would increase inferior populations and further degrade "the genetic quality of the human race." They decided radical measures to reduce birthrates were justified in order to save "Western Civilization" from being dragged down by the growing humanitarian demands of Third World countries.
Thus was born the Population Council, which would in turn become the nexus of the entire population control movement, going on to coordinate the work of the United Nations, the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) – founded three weeks later – as well as major pharmaceutical firms.
The founder of IPPF, Margaret Sanger, selected for its first director general the psychologist C. P. Blacker, who called for a strategy of "crypto-eugenics," saying "you seek to fulfill the aims of eugenics without disclosing what you are really aiming at and without mentioning the word."
When Nehru presented India's first population-limitation policy in December 1952, the population establishment found a willing government that would allow them to start experimenting on its people to find a cheap contraceptive "to be used in poverty stricken slums, jungles and among the most ignorant people," as Margaret Sanger put it. Years later, Planned Parenthood would import the experiments back into poor neighbourhoods in the United States. Sanger said, "I believe that now, immediately there should be national sterilization for certain dysgenic types of our population who are being encouraged to breed and would die out were the government not feeding them."
According to Connelly, it wasn't until President Lyndon Johnson, prodded by a few highly influential advisors, that American funding soared, turning Sanger's vision of forcing birth control on the world's poor into reality in India and beyond. As the initiatives gained unstoppable momentum, the brutal consequences shocked even the most enthusiastic population controllers.
8. Pro-Abort Panic; Feds To Recognize Birth Control Pill As Abortion – July 18, 2008
Washington, D.C. (18 July 2008) – One month after American Life League's Protest the Pill Day, pro-abortion activists are in a panic as the Department of Health and Human Services considers a plan that would not only protect pro-life medical workers from discrimination, but also recognize abortion to include the birth control pill.
In the wake of yesterday's historic news, pro-life leaders and pro-abortion politicians are both considering the ramifications of such a federal plan.
"This move could redefine the abortion war," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. "For years, many in the pro-life movement have been afraid to tackle the birth control pill, but we can't ignore it any longer – the birth control pill often means the death of a preborn child."
Besides protecting pro-life medical workers and recognizing abortion to include abortifacient birth control, the regulation could have far-reaching effects for Title X funding, which allows Planned Parenthood to buy contraceptives at discounted prices using your tax dollars.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America set up a special page on their site, imploring supporters to oppose the new regulation. According to the PPFA Web site, "The rule would also require… Planned Parenthood, to certify that we will not refuse to hire nurses and other providers who object to abortion and even certain types of birth control."
"We're seeing the pro-abortionists squirm because they know," said Brown, "that if the American people recognize the personhood of the preborn child from creation on, their big money business of selling death at discount prices will be over."

9. Pro-Life Movement Owes Thanks To Governor General – July 21, 2008
Rarely if ever has the awarding of the Order of Canada stirred up so much controversy as when it was announced on July 1, 2008 that Henry Morgentaler would be a recipient. The intent was to canonize a hero of abortion rights. But awarding the nation’s highest civil honour to the man who perhaps worked harder than any other to abort babies has refuelled the abortion debate and given new energy to the pro-life cause.
There has been an outpouring of indignation that a man so signally used to bring destruction on the most innocent should have received such an honour. On July 8, 2008 the leaders of Madonna House in Combermere, Ontario formally returned the Order of Canada that had been presented to their foundress, Catherine Doherty. Suzanne Stubbs, Director of Women, commented, “we don't want the medal because it has been dishonoured by being given to someone who has not built up Canada.” Thus far three Order of Canada medals have been returned and other returns are in the offing. According to Lifesitenews.net some 1000 people rallied at Rideau Hall on July 9 to demand that Morgentaler’s honour be revoked.
The honouring of Canada’s chief abortionist is not just about giving him a personal pat on the back. The elites, including Supreme Court Justice Beverly Mclachlin, who reportedly pushed this decision (against the wishes of 92% of respondents in a poll taken by the Globe and Mail in February) clearly wanted to send the message that abortion is just fine, that there is nothing inherently wrong with taking innocent life. Now I know they didn’t actually say that. But it is the underlying subtext, for in honouring the activist they implicitly honour his cause and facilitate the redefining of what is tolerable and supportable.
I lament for our nation. For it has now gone beyond tolerating to actually celebrating the shedding of innocent blood. The motto of the Order of Canada is “DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM” which means, “they desire a better country”. But apparently Morgentaler did not desire a better country for all those preborn Canadians who were not allowed to see the light of day.
Governor General Michaëlle Jean and those who advise her on these decisions have stuck their collective finger in the eyes of countless Canadians who hold to traditional moral values. This breath-taking impudence explains the white-hot outrage expressed by so many columnists who write from a moral perspective.
One activist, at a loss to know what to do in the face of such contempt uniquely thumbed his nose at the current resident of Rideau Hall. He photocopied a picture of the medal of honour, performed some unmentionable “bathroom work” on the copy, then carefully wrapped it all up and sent it to the office of the Governor General. Childish? Extreme? Overly provocative? Perhaps so. Do I support such an act? No. But, on the other hand perhaps those who spurn historic morality by honouring the vile activity of taking innocent life should not be surprised to find that they have tarnished their own office. True, the Bible calls us to render honour to whom it is due. But to bestow honour on the unworthy is itself dishonourable. And the most honourable thing for the Governor General and her counsellors to do would be to rethink and repent of their actions.
To the delight of pro-lifers (and presumably the chagrin of pro-abortion supporters) the Governor Generals award to Morgentaler has revived what many people had thought to be a dead issue. According to one pro-life leader, “every movement needs a villain”. He went on to say that former activists are flocking back, donations are coming in, and the media is paying attention once again to the pro-life cause. It seems that the movement to protect innocent life owes a debt of thanks to the office of our Governor General.
Jean Chrétien once made the palpably false statement that Canada now has “social peace” on abortion. This latest outrage ignited by giving the Order of Canada to the nation’s chief abortionist proves that he couldn’t have been more wrong. Millions of Canadians like myself will never, ever surrender to the notion that it is acceptable to kill the most defenceless. Much less will we ever agree that it is right to honour those who do so. We’re here. Our views may seem queer. Get used to it!
