Atlantic Provinces Special Education AuthorityAuxiliary

The APSEA auxiliary was founded as the School for the Blind Auxiliary in 1974 and includes representation from church groups, community organizations and interested individuals. In 1996 the name changed to APSEA Auxiliary to comply with the reorganization within ASPEA. The Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired and the Resource Centre for the Hearing Impaired were amalgamated in Halifax. APSEA is the board which governs the centres and has representation from the Atlantic Provinces including the four Deputy Ministers of Education.

The Auxiliary meets the first Thursday of each month, at 9:30 AM at the APSEA Centre 5940 South Street.

New members are always welcome.

The purpose of the Auxiliary is to raise funds for children and youth who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, or Visually Impaired. Our mandate includes students who live in residence, short term placements, day students, and approximately 1700 students throughout the Atlantic Provinces through the off campus program.

The main objectives of the Auxiliary are:

  1. To provide the students with special toys and equipment to enhance development of their sensory, motor and communication skills.
  2. To provide the Centre with technical equipment which will assist the students in their learning process.
  3. To continue the operation of the Toy Library for students in residence and throughout the Atlantic Provinces.

Fund raising events include the Fall Fair in November, and the Bridge Marathon and Social, in the spring as well as grocery tape refunds and other projects.

The Auxiliary is further supported by donations from individuals, church groups, community organizations and businesses.

Your donations are always appreciated, these can be monetary or items for use in the classrooms or sale items for the Fall Fair tables. Cheques may be made payable to the APSEA Auxiliary. Receipts will be issued upon request.

If you are interested in the Auxiliary or as a volunteer at the school, please call Anne Gavel, the Volunteer Co-ordinator at the Centre at (902) 424-8512 or you may contact the President of the Auxiliary, Mrs. Verna Munroe at (902) 453-4188.

For close to a century, Sobeys has been a leading corporate citizen in the communities we serve. Today, we are a vital participant in the social and economic well being in close to 900 local communities in all parts of Canada.

We believe in giving back to the communities where we do business – as do our franchise affiliates and thousands of employees who generously donate financially as well as volunteering their time to support community causes.

Our corporate philanthropy is focused on major programs that promote the well being and health of families and children, as well as supporting store based initiatives in local communities.

In fiscal 2004, we supported hundreds of charities across Canada, ranging from Kids Help Phone and Children’s Wish Foundation to United Way/Centraide and Easter Seals as well as hospitals, sports and recreational programs and community food banks. In addition, the Sobeys scholarship program supports eligible employees, their children and spouses with continuing university education.

The APSEA Ladies Auxiliary has been collecting Sobey’s receipts for many years.  These receipts are totaled by them and turned in to Sobey’s.  Sobey’s, in turn, makes a donation to the APSEA Ladies Auxiliary amounting to ˝ of 1% of the total value of the receipts.

The money is used for the children's needs which are not met by Government funding.

We at Kent are proud to support our communities through education, awareness and fundraising events like the IWK Telethon for Children, Janeway, Rally of Hope, Kid's Sports Groups, Skate to Care - Mind Care, Habitat for Humanity and much more.

The Rally of Hope is a fundraiser for the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, the proceeds of which are used to purchase equipment which provides better health care facilities for people who come from all over the Maritimes.

Kent is proud to be a sponsor for Canada 24, helping our Canadian Olympic Team!

At Kent, we believe that community involvement is not about public relations. We live and work in the same communities as our customers. Our business is devoted to building and improving the homes of our neighbours, and with it, their quality of life.
